It's an EmMajority Report Thursday! She speaks to Andrew Seaton, junior research fellow at St. Anne's College at the University of Oxford, to discuss his recent book Our NHS: A History of Britain's Best Loved Institution. Then, Emma talks to Camille Rey, a mother of a trans child who left Texas and moved out of state due to Texas's extremely restrictive anti-trans laws. First, Emma runs through the day’s headlines, touching on the severe air quality issues in the US, a terror attack on a gender studies class in Canada, Donald Trump’s alternative tactics to shirk responsibility for his stolen documents, and mass arrests in French protests against police brutality, before parsing through the Supreme Court’s affirmative action decision, their perversion of the 14th Amendment, and the highlights of the dissents. Andrew Seaton then joins as he dives right into the NHS’ 75-year history as a beloved British institution that always seems to be under threat from the right, first looking at the current state of the service – with the NHS deeply hindered during the pandemic alongside increasing cost-of-living and wage-crises among its laborers. Slowly working backward, Seaton then walks Emma through the Labor Party’s slow revitalization of the NHS over the 21st Century, revamping its budget after decades of cuts, and seeing a drastic improvement in its efficacy and efficiency, only for the emergency of a string of conservative governments in the later 2010s to completely reverse their progress. Continuing the journey backward, Emma and Andrew explore how the NHS remained the beast that Thatcher couldn’t slay during the neoliberal turn, before taking on the post-war labor project that was establishing the NHS, and how the project was viewed by the rest of the West (particularly the US). Camille Ray then discusses her experiences as the mother of a trans kid in Texas as anti-LGBTQ legislation gets more and more repressive, painting a picture of the impact of the mere existence of this legislation on trans kids, and the exclusionary and transphobic tactics that they employ. Wrapping up, Ray and Emma look at the reality of being a trans kid in the US, walking through what gender-affirming care ACTUALLY looks like, and what her and her son’s post-Texas life has provided.

Happy Monday! Sam and Emma speak to Kimberly St. Julian-Varnon, History Ph.D candidate at the University of Pennslyvania, to discuss the recent developments in the Russian/Ukraine conflict that have transpired since Friday. Sam and Emma start off the week by checking in on the Faith & Freedom Coalition Conference in Washington D.C., where a Liberty University communications official said, out loud and on camera, that the right needs to act more like Hitler and Stalin did to seize control of education. Then Kimberly joins the show to discuss the absolute chaos that has been the last 48 hours in the Russia/Ukraine conflict. Kimberly explains why, after the last time she was on the Majority Report in March of 2022, she isn't surprised by how protracted the conflict has been, and emphasizes that, per her scholarship and research, that the United States is not the principle actor in the war, and that the U.S., particularly the Biden Administration, most likely would prefer a negotiated settlement so as to forestall conservative attacks on the amount of military aid going to Ukraine. They then dive into the complex web of associations between Yevgeny Prigozhin, the head of the mercenary Wagner Group, Sergei Shoigu, the head of the Russian army, and Valery Gerasimov, the head of the war effort in Ukraine, and why exactly Prigozhin took this moment to turn his forces back from Ukraine and into Russia, in order to briefly occupy the city of Rostov-on-Don, before negotiating with Vladimir Putin and Belarus's Lukashenko to stand down and defect to Belarus. Sam and Emma ask Kimberly what she thinks is next going forward, whether Prigozhin can survive the mutiny attempt after the settlement with Putin, and what the end goals of any supposed rebellion like this would be for Prigozhin. Kimberly also warns against observers who see this as potentially the end of Putin's leadership in Russia, noting that, due to the overwhelming control of state media in the country, it's very hard to determine how much of this is actually getting through to the Russian public.

And in the Fun Half, Emma and Sam break down some of Emma's legendary performance on the "Culture War" podcast live and in-studio with Tim Pool and the "Actual Justice Warrior" Sean Fitzgerald. It's Hump Day! Sam speaks with Lauren Kirchner, investigative reporter at Consumer Reports, to discuss her recent reporting on the chemicals known as PFAS. Then, Sam's joined by Alex Sammon, politics writer at Slate, to discuss his recent piece entitled "Want to Stare Into the Republican Soul in 2023?". Sam kicks off the show and reacts to yet another bombshell piece of reporting from ProPublica on Samuel Alito's previously undisclosed fishing trip to Alaska with hedge fund billionaire Peter Singer. The only difference is, this one came with a prebuttal Op-Ed from Justice Alito himself in the form of a Wall Street Journal Op-Ed. Then, Lauren joins the show to discuss the multi-district lawsuit involving PFAS, the "forever chemicals" that are used for non-stick purposes like Teflon and ScotchGard, and how the lawsuit is geared towards firefighting foam that has PFAS as its main ingredients, and that it's ultimately seeped into soil and drinking water. They then go into the origin of the phrase "forever chemicals", as well as one of the more notable litigation efforts against the usage of PFAS, as was the case in Ohio involving Dupont and the Teflon manufacturer 3M that was ultimately adapted into the film "Dirty Waters." Sam asks about EPA rule-making when it comes to PFAS, what the history of that has been, and what is being done now by Biden's EPA to limit the usage of PFAS. After diving into some more of the particulars of the current multi-district lawsuit, they finally dive into the history of the development of PFAS in the 1970's, and how 3M got involved with mainstreaming it, before 3M ultimately had to reveal to the EPA that a large majority of the population has PFAS within their bloodstream due to air and consumption exposure (even newborn babies are born with PFAS in their bloodstream!). Then, Alex joins the show to discuss his recent visit to a huge car dealer conference in Texas, the insane profit margins that car dealers have experienced especially since COVID started, and how they are underrated in how singular their political influence is in electoral politics, especially in Republican politics. Alex and Sam then discuss the unique campaign finance gambits that Ron DeSantis is engaging in with his presidential campaign and his "Never Back Down" Super PAC, and whether it's really "legal" or not.

It's an EmMajority Report Thursday! First, she and Emma step back to look at how she became contracted with the NSA, where she stumbled upon a document suggesting Russia had engaged in election interference in 2016, before parsing through her delivering of said document to the Intercept, where the information was completely mishandled resulting in the full force of the law coming down on Winner. Edwin Ackerman then walks through the rise of Andrés Manuel López Obrador, current President of Mexico, from a surprise left-wing mayoral victory in Mexico City to a 30-point victory in the 2018 election. After stepping back to explore his political evolution and party affiliation, Emma and Ackerman tackle the success of his recently established MORENA party, and the pro-labor reforms his government has implemented, also touching on the evolution of his base, and addressing the allegations of authoritarianism from certain neolib outlets. Wrapping up, they explore the relationship between corruption, populism, and left-wing politics, and how AMLO’s regime has begun to change that.

Sam and Emma host Peter Shamshiri, or Law Boy on Twitter, co-host of the 5-4 Podcast, to discuss some of the recent big decisions coming out of the Supreme Court, and what's still left on the docket. Sam and Emma start off by taking another look at some of the reactions to the big Trump indictment prior to his arraignment this afternoon in Miami. Then Peter joins the show to discuss whether he'd go to bat for Trump in Florida since he apparently is still looking for lawyers, but then more seriously dives into the shocking Milligan decision, where Justices Kavanaugh and Roberts sided with the liberals to preserve the Voting Rights Act. Sam, Emma and Peter then discuss the Talevski case, Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson's first majority opinion, that, via a narrow ruling, preserved the structure of Medicaid. They then look to the future as to how the court might view the affirmative action and student debt decisions that are still before them, and if there are any other cases that Peter has his eye on (keep track of Brackeen v. Haaland, a case involving the Indian Child Welfare Act.)

Sam and Emma host Alissa Quart, executive director of the Economic Hardship Reporting Project, to discuss her recent book Bootstrapped: Liberating Ourselves from the American Dream. Then, they're joined by Aaron Kleinman, director of research for the States Project at Future Now, to discuss the Virginia legislative primaries, coming up next Tuesday June 20th. Sam and Emma first run through today’s big headlines, parsing through Trump’s most recent indictments, and why even his GOP allies are saying he might be done. Alissa Quart then dives right into the ironic origins of the US’ “bootstraps” myth of the “self-made man” as terms meant to poke fun at those who believed in this oxymoronic dream, before being embraced by various earnest authors like Emerson and Thoreau – as well as perhaps less earnest ones – who began to reframe these ideas in celebration of rugged individualism (despite their own dependence on community). Expanding on the conversation, Quart then walks through the redefining of these ideas on a political level over the course of the Twentieth Century, from the Presidency of Hoover to the Neoliberal turn under Reagan and Clinton, all serving to reify the defining American myth of meritocracy. After touching on the particular corporatization of this myth in the 21st Century, Alissa, Sam, and Emma wrap up by exploring interpersonal and political avenues to begin busting this myth, and ways to materially begin that shift. Aaron Kleinman then takes on Virginia’s impending legislative primaries, and why these elections make or break the politics of a swing state that serves as a lifeline to much of the hard-red South, particularly with the threat of pro-life Democrats.

It's Casual Friday! Sam and Emma host Heather Digby Parton, contributing writer at Salon.com and proprietor of the blog Hullabaloo, to round up the week in news. Sam and Emma start off by discussing the Supreme Court's shocking decision regarding Alabama's congressional districts, and how Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson's constitutional interpretation in oral arguments back in October helped set up a victory for the Voting Rights Act. Then, Digby joins the show to discuss the bombshell Trump indictment, how the case has been assigned to a judge Trump literally appointed to the bench, and the entire Republican party, including presidential candidates trying to depose him from the top of the presidential ticket (looking at you, Meatball Ron) are coalescing behind an extremely coordinated PR campaign: that Trump is the victim of a 2-tiered justice system designed to prosecute Democrats' political enemies, and that America is descending into a banana republic. They also observe that this strategy has taken hold all over the spectrum, whether it's televangelist Robert Jeffress declaring that the Durham report "immunizes" Trump from being indicted, to "reasonable" Rep. Nancy Mace toeing the new party line on Fox with Harris Faulkner. They remark on how no one, save for also-ran presidential candidate Asa Hutchinson, could bring themselves to even acknowledge that what Trump did was illegal and disqualifying for him to run for elected office. They also get down to one of the simpler aspects of this matter: If Trump had just given all the documents back after being subpoenaed, this wouldn't have even been on anyone's radar, let alone the Department of Justice! Digby, Sam, and Emma also speculate on why so many candidates in the Republican primary haven't dropped out: they're hoping for a deus ex machina of sorts-Trump dying or going to jail. And Trump is hoping for a deus ex machina of his own: to stick it out in the race, win the nomination and the presidency, then potentially issue...himself a presidential primary. They touch on the unique odiousness of Ron DeSantis the man and Ron DeSantis the presidential candidate, as well as the current House Freedom Caucus uprising after the debt ceiling bill passed and was signed into law.

And in the Fun Half, Sam and Emma talk about Marjorie Taylor Greene not knowing what the Glass-Steagall Act was because...she was born after it came out, Megyn Kelly taking Dave Rubin to the mat over his DeSantis surrogacy and DeSantis's unwillingness to any unfriendly media (Megyn Kelly?? Next, Ramenda Cyrus walks through the story of Ms. Lilly to demonstrate the prominent and growing issue of predatory lending in the US, parsing through the tactics these predators use, and the infrastructural gaps they exploit. Wrapping up, Cyrus and Emma explore the particular role of Bank-deserts in inflaming this issue, why this exploitation primarily affects low-income people of color, and how this all relates to the defanging of Dodd-Frank.

Sam and Emma host Mark Joseph Stern, senior writer at Slate, to discuss the recent decisions regarding labor and environmental regulation by the Supreme Court. First, Sam and Emma run through updates on Ukraine’s defensive, DeSantis’ human trafficking schtick, Atlanta’s City Council approving the Cop City funding in the face of mass public opposition, Oklahoma’s funding of religious schools, SAG-AFTRA’s strike, PGA’s merger with a Saudi golf league, and the Quebec wildfires, before parsing through some of yesterday’s best speeches in front of the Atlanta City Council. Mark Joseph Stern then dives right into assessing last month’s Sackett v. EPA decision in which the Supreme Court unanimously curtailed the Clean Water Act’s wetland protections, going in and effectively rewriting Congress’ provision protecting wetlands “adjacent” to protected bodies of water in favor of only those with surface connections – less than 50% of those originally protected. Stern, Sam, and Emma go on to tackle this decision’s relationship to the Chevron doctrine, going beyond simply undermining vague delegations of power to governmental agencies and completely editing out explicit Congressional approval of agency power. Next, Mark Joseph Stern parses through the Court’s 8-1 decision on Glacier NW vs. Teamsters, siding against employees’ right to strike, in favor of protecting minimal property damage that the strikers made an active effort to prevent, as Stern walks Sam and Emma through the overriding of clear precedent and the power of the NLRB in this decision. Wrapping up, Mark explores why the Supreme Court’s decisions in June aren’t likely to get better.

And in the Fun Half: Sam and Emma tackle Cornell West’s entrance into the Presidential race with the People’s Party, discuss Twitter’s continuing debacle around their TwitterFiles, and parse through the mystery deal between Marjorie Taylor Greene and Kevin McCarthy to get the debt ceiling deal done. They also dive into Florida’s virulently anti-immigrant SB-1718 and the impact its passing has had, Mario in Georgia dives into DeSantis’ military comments, Kai from New Jersey discusses his state’s elections, and William from LA discusses the importance of diverse news sources. Fox News finds a theocratic temp to fill Tucker’s spot, plus, your calls and IMs!

Happy Monday! Sam and Emma host Steve Vladeck, Chair in Federal Courts at the University of Texas School of Law, to discuss his recent book The Shadow Docket: How the Supreme Court Uses Stealth Rulings to Amass Power and Undermine the Republic. First, Sam and Emma run through updates on Ukraine’s offensive, the WGA writers’ strike, Twitter’s dropping revenue, fascist legislation in Tennessee and Texas, Mike Pence’s entrance to the GOP primary, and rising COVID rates, also previewing the increasingly fascist candidacies of Nikki Haley and other Trump opponents. Steve Vladeck then dives right into the distinction between the newly dubbed “Shadow Docket” and the Merit Docket – which involves years of litigation, oral arguments, full decisions and is typically what we think of when we imagine a Supreme Court case – and the longstanding reliance on both dockets, the former for routine and expedited cases, and the latter for cases with material and lasting impact. Vladeck then walks Sam and Emma through the revolution that the shadow docket has undergone during the Post-Trump conservative majority, with the Court expediting the Trump Administration’s challenges whenever requested, and essentially ignoring the processes that gave their institution legitimacy in the first place. After assessing the rather partisan nature of the Court’s recent use of the shadow docket, Sam, Emma, and Steve look at the evolution of the docket and the public’s faith in the Court and emphasize the importance of public pressure in delegitimizing this institution.

And in the Fun Half: Sam and Emma chat with Giuseppe in Jacksonville on the devastating impact fundamentalists have on their (and neighboring) communities, explore Joe Manchin’s potential presidential run, and AJ from Baltimore assesses the electoral evils of Trump and DeSantis. Steve Deace rings in Pride Month by calling Trump gay, Candace Owens, Jordan Peterson, and Matt Walsh do some unsurprisingly stupid and deranged transphobia, and Robert from Manhattan discusses coverage of trans rights, plus, your calls and IMs!

Then they are joined by comedian and writer Adam Conover to give an update on the WGA writers strike. First, Sam runs through updates on the debt ceiling, labor updates across the US, Biden’s student loan forgiveness, Georgia’s Trump investigation, and Ron DeSantis’ continuing embarrassments, also touching on the Right’s most recent super secret documents that will definitely nail the Biden family this time! Alex Pareene then dives right into assessing how much this debt ceiling could’ve been avoided if Democrats weren’t obsessed with publicity and crisis politics and had just passed it in December, walking through the myriad legislative shortcomings from Biden and Democratic leadership since the first separation of the Bipartisan Infrastructure bill from Build Back Better. Alex and Sam wrap up by tackling the GOP primary, and whether every single Republican hopeful might just be praying for a Trump conviction. Adam Conover then talks Sam through updates on the writers’ strike as it reaches its fifth week, tackling the scope of the issues – from the gigification of the job to the labor threat of AI – and exploring why the Film and TV CEOs are so intent on breaking age-old norms of how to make good products just to save a few bucks. Wrapping up, Adam walks through the Guild’s proposals and the value of both intra-union and inter-union solidarity.

She talks to Matthew Dallek, historian and professor of political management at George Washington University, to discuss his recent book Birchers: How the John Birch Society Radicalized the American Right. Then, she speaks to independent reporter Moira Lavelle to discuss her recent reporting in Jacobin on the Greek elections. First, Emma runs through updates on the House passing the debt ceiling deal, reported statements by Trump on his classified document debacle, DeSantis’ continued kowtowing to Trump, fascism in Tennessee and Turkey, Florida’s business strike, and Project Veritas turning against James O’Keefe, also parsing through Georgia’s fascist crackdown on anti-Cop City activists, and the active lies coming out of Brian Kemp’s office. Matthew Dallek then dives right into the history of the John Birch Society’s shaping of the American Right, diving into their birth as a domestic Cold War anti-communist organization intent on following the blueprint of Senator McCarthy and exposing and expelling all communists from US politics. Next, Professor Dallek walks through their tactics that are deeply reflected in the GOP of today, including spreading conspiracy theories, establishing martyrs, and dabbling in anti-democratic and anti-Semitic messaging, before exploring the quintessential “Birchers” in US politics throughout the last half-century, from Pat Buchanan to Rand Paul, and looking at the importance of the Birch Society’s emphasis on local organizing. Moira Lavelle then parses through the recent non-conclusive Greek elections, with no party establishing a majority via election or coalition, first taking on the myriad factors in Greece’s current political disillusionment and desire for stability, before stepping back to analyze the floundering trust for Syriza, the left-wing party most recently elected in 2015, and why their right-wing opponents, New Democracy, are successfully capitalizing on this moment. Wrapping up, Lavelle discusses the likelihood of a New Democracy victory in the coming round of elections, and what that means for a future of continuing austerity and instability in the country.

And in the Fun Half: Emma is joined by Matt Binder as they discuss the ongoing Daily Wire-Elon Musk beef over Twitter’s decision to cancel their premier of Matt Walsh’s transphobic documentary on the app, and the recent despicable backlash to a recent CUNY Law graduate from the NY political and legal establishment.
