Author and documentary filmmaker Astra Taylor (@astradisastra), joins us to discuss her new book, Democracy May Not Exist, but We'll Miss It When It's Gone. Despite having existed for a long time as a concept, true democracy has rarely been put into practice. Capitalism is inherently undemocratic and other truths popularized by Occupy Wall Street. Why OWS happened when it did. What kinds of lessons and political organizations came out of Occupy? What should have been done differently? Why the left can and should change the rules of the system to benefit the 99%.

For this book, Hari traveled around the world and interviewed experts to identify the sources of our pain, including: Lack of control over one’s work conditions, childhood trauma, and the isolation of modern life. He traces many of these problems back to neoliberal capitalism, as well as forward to antisocial behavior as it manifests in the political sphere. Best of 2019: Identity Crisis: The Battle for the Meaning of America w/ John Sides + David Feldman & H. Jon Benjamin
John Sides (@johnmsides), professor of political science at George Washington University and co-author of Identity Crisis: The 2016 Presidential Campaign and the Battle for the Meaning of America, joins us. John Sides (@johnmsides), professor of political science at George Washington University, joins us to discuss his new book, Identity Crisis: The 2016 Presidential Campaign and the Battle for the Meaning of America. For this book, Sides researched voters' beliefs about how much the Democratic Party's policies helped black Americans, and found they grew substantially after Obama's 2008 election. Sides posits that Obama's election racialized US politics in a way they had not been previously, causing race, immigration and religion to play a major role in the 2016 presidential election. Then, from May: David Feldman then joins the program to discuss his "principles" and why in 2020 it's all about defeating Trump. While providing healthcare, food security, and government oversight are important things, the most important thing "in principle" is that we unit behind the candidate most likely to defeat Trump. Feldman says the threats of a inter-party circular firing squad and democrats staying home on election day are real and must be avoided at all cost. Additionally, Bernie is not reaching out to the middle class white males like Biden and cannot match Middle Class Joe because the former VP is just that, a middle class white male. While half the country doesn't have $500 for an emergency, Feldman understands, as a middle class man, who has experienced tragedy, that we start reaching out to the middle class and and then reach out to others from there. Feldman ends his interview explaining why it's important to take the advice of Rob Reiner in every aspect of your life. Finally, also from May: Sam and H. Jon Benjamin have a very uncomfortable interview about Benjamin's newish book, 'Failure Is An Option: An Attempted Memoir.' We're talking decades' worth of simmering resentment bubbling up to the surface uncomfortable. Seriously, why do we keep doing this?

Today's Best Of: On today’s show, Jamila Michener (@povertyscholar), Professor in the department of Government at Cornell University, joins us to discuss her new book, Fragmented Democracy: Medicaid, Federalism, and Unequal Politics. Medicaid is one of the most fundamental aspects of the US federal safety net, however it is fractured and constantly under attack by state governments, especially in GOP-controlled states. Michener explains that states have very expansive control over what they will and will not cover for its Medicaid recipients. The way that Americans provide care is fragmented and inconsistent. Michener says American social policy towards people living in poverty is one where we give people as little help as possible. States should have an much discretion as possible when dealing with its poor people. This is most illustrative in the difference between Medicare and Medicaid. In the former we have a nationalized program where the funding and policy is set by the federal program; and in the latter a program that is different from state to state, leaving a vulnerable class at the whims of its state’s balance sheet. Michener and Sam also consider lower class involvement in the political process and how their action or absence influences election outcomes. Finally, Michener describes the ground game for Medicare-For-All. On today's show: Lara Trump to federal workers not getting paid: "This is so much bigger than any one person." Tressie McMillan Cottom (@tressiemcphd), assistant professor of sociology at Virginia Commonwealth University, joins us to discuss her book, 'Lower Ed: The Troubling Rise of For-Profit Colleges in the New Economy.' With the rise of neoliberalism came the "education gospel," which claimed workers could, and should, raise their wages by getting four-year college degrees at their own expense. While it did not turn out to be true, this myth fed a boom in for-profit colleges. Through her interviews with students, employees, executives and activists, McMillan Cottom paints a full picture of these predatory institutions, which disproportionately impact working class women of color. Good Thursday morning, Michael Brooks hosts anthropologist Isabel Peñaranda and sociologist Julián Gómez-Delgado to discuss the ongoing general strike in Columbia and their piece in the Jacobin, "Colombia's New Awakening." As Columbia joins the global wave of social unrest, can the popular uprising resist conservative president Ivan Duque's efforts to co-opt the movement and deliver change to a country beleaguered by inequality and militarization? On November 21st, hundreds of thousands of people marched on the streets in Bogota, where Colombians gathered banging pans through the night for a week straight, protesting against neoliberal austerity policy measures like tax and pension reform. As the protests grew, all kinds of activists took their projects to the streets, including feminist groups, LGBT rights groups, and even anti-shark fishing groups--making the protests incredibly wide-ranging and varied. Brooks and Gomez-Delgado examine the current president, Ivan Duque, whose disapproval rating is at 70%. Duque came to power in 2018 after he gained the endorsement of Alvaro Uribe, the country's most popular politician in the 21st century whose extractive policies and close ties military forces made him an enemy of the left. Peñaranda then explains the history of left political suppression in Colombia and how that has helped form the current political unrest before the current conservative government. Brooks and Gomez-Delgado then explore US foreign policy and intelligence involvement in Colombia's domestic politics, specifically its role in pressuring communist communities in rural parts of Colombia. Brooks, Peñaranda, and Gomez-Delgado conclude their conversation considering what the next steps are in the protests and why a South American-focused and localized discourse is essential to producing material benefits for working people. Looking at a variety of case studies, Winter examines why the Democratic Party has abandoned state level politics, including: the priorities of wealthy liberal donors, the news media, the web of patronage w/r/t consulting firms, and the perceived threat posed by grassroots orgs. Happy Tuesday, Sam hosts journalist and academic Anne Nelson to discuss her new book, Shadow Network: Media, Money, and the Secret Hub of the Radical Right. Sam and Nelson begin their interview with a play-by-play of how fundamentalist Evangelical Christians rallied behind Ronald Reagan during his the 1980 election and helped fuel his victory with a strong turnout in southern and southwestern states. Nelson also explains the foundational tenets of Christian Nationalism, and the role of "Biblical Inerrancy," which states the word of God is in the text of the bible, in Christian Nationalists policy projects. Nelson's book explores the history and impact of the Council for National Policy (CNP), the professional umbrella organization for the country's most influential conservative organizations and activist groups. Nelson explains how the CNP brokered a deal with Trump in 2016, which involved adding Mike Pence as his running mate and establishing an Evangelical Advisory Board in Trump's White House. Sam and Nelson conclude their discussion exploring the role of conservative media outlets like Salem Media, and their ability to fill the void where capital investors starved and killed local news organizations. Good Monday morning, the Majority Report is back from the Thanksgiving holiday with a new interview featuring journalist Liz Plank on her new book, For the Love of Men: A New Vision for Mindful Masculinity. Sam and Plank begin their conversation discussing the need to expand the context surrounding gender discourse. Plank explains that we are more comfortable limiting boys in their actions in behavior in ways that evoke emotion or vulnerability. Yet, we have no issue promoting boys to perform violence, whether that be toy guns or certain video games. Considering the hierarchy of social roles, how they are gendered, and the value applied to them, Sam and Plank discuss how the state and American capitalism have shaped our understanding of masculinity in our culture. A foundational element of male identity in America is the role of "Provider." Sam and Liz discuss how, under capitalism, the part of Provider is magnified and brings stress that is not as prevalent in countries whose economies incorporate more elements of socialism. Closing out their conversation, Sam and Plank take on Sam's "zero-sum" discourse, what happens when white guys begin to lose their disproportionately large piece of the cultural and material pie? Plank concedes that there is a self-correction taking place in society and that white men are losing their entitlement, but, in the end, ending that entitlement will ultimately be a good thing as it will help bring more substantial equality. And in the Fun Half: a city-run grocery store in deep-red Florida, Mayor Pete's insincere free college proposal, John from San Antonio plants his Bernie yard sign and shares his latest thoughts on progressives need for delegates in 2020, Louie Gohmert and "the power of positive thinking" legal defense, John Kennedy double backs and reclaims his belief that Ukraine interfered in the 2016 elections, Bloomberg's unique take on dictatorship and democracy, Brandon Straka updates Walk-Away 2020, Mark Zuckerberg's private dinner with Donald Trump, Waleed Shahid from Justice Democrats explains the fight for Medicare for All, plus your calls and IMs!
