The Majority Report with Sam Seder

Sam hosts Elie Mystal (@ElieNYC), Justice Correspondent at the Nation magazine, to discuss the Amy Coney Barrett SCOTUS nomination, our conservative judiciary future, and what the left can do to fight it.

On today's show: Brian Kilmeade says Trump missed huge layup when he did not unequivocally renounce white supremacy. Fox and Friends guests can't say why Trump didn't condemn white supremacy. Trump won't condemn white supremacists, Proud Boys stand by, & Biden calls Antifa an idea, not an organization. IMAGE: Proud Boys' new branding "Stand Back, Stand By."

Sam hosts Elie Mystal (@ElieNYC), Justice Correspondent at the Nation magazine, to discuss the Amy Coney Barrett SCOTUS nomination, our conservative judiciary future, and what the left can do to fight it. Trump's admission that he wants ACB on the SCOTUS so he can steal the election. Barrett's history as part of the team that worked to stop the Florida recount in 2000. Barrett's reactionary views and hypocrisy w/r/t recusal. How a right-wing court could use the Chevron doctrine to block progressive legislation. Mystal's read on court packing and term limits.

On the fun half: Sarah Palin's bizarre video calling out Lisa Murkowski about ACB Nomination: "This is my house!" 1964 NYT headline describes voter suppression. Marco Rubio says Republican Senate was never going to confirm Merrick Garland. A libertarian makes Sam's day by calling into the show. Plus, your calls and IMs!

Sam hosts Pulitzer Prize-winning Yale Historian David Blight to discuss his recent biography of Frederick Douglass, Frederick Douglass: Prophet of Freedom, and how the Reconstruction era lives on in our contemporary politics. Sam and Blight take a deep dive into Frederick Douglass the orator and the ways his politics and activism altered between radical and pragmatism. Then Sam and Blight place Douglass in the larger historical context of reconstruction and post-reconstruction and how we are still living in the political reality forged after the Civil War.

And in the Fun Half: A new animation from 1BoredEditor, a preview of tonight's Presidential Debate, the GOP accuses Biden of doing ADD drugs, Tucker Carlson's faux populism excuses Trump's tax avoidance, leveraging the ACA in the Amy Coney Barrett confirmation and a handful close Senate races, plus your calls and IMs!

Sam hosts Aaron Kleinman, director of research at the Future Now Fund and Give Smart, to discuss this year's most important down-ballot Democratic candidates and how they'll impact policy on the state and local level. Sam and Aaron discuss the importance of resource allocation to down-ballot candidates to newly-in-play races in places like Montana, Kansas, and South Carolina as well as what fills in for traditional outreach tactics like doorknocking versus new ones like digital ads and text banking. The two then discuss the possibilities of democrats flipping statehouse majorities in Florida and Pennsylvania and how that could impact the chosen electors in a close presidential elections. Kleinman then explains the possible outcomes for Biden and Trump on election day, including what to expect if voters in democratic trending suburbs break for Biden, or if Biden fails to turn out rural voters. Sam and Aaron conclude their discussion considering what it means if the election comes down to healthcare and the possibility of the Supreme Court rolling back the ACA.

And in the Fun Half: leveraging the ACA in the face of a conservative Supreme Court, Trump's tax returns and Biden's debate strategy, Fox News spews more lies about armed Antifa while Proud Boys are themselves in Portland, and according to one pastor cops are doing god's work.

Sam hosts Alex Pareene (@pareene) of the New Republic and comedian David Feldman (@David_Feldman_) to discuss the biggest stories of the week including Mitch McConnell's relentless pursuit of the American judiciary.

On today's show: Trump booed at RBG remembrance at SCOTUS.

Alex Pareene (@pareene) of the New Republic joins Sam to discuss the week's biggest stories, including: Mitch McConnell and the GOP's relentless — and potentially unstoppable — quest to capture the judicial branch for decades to come. The technically legal methods Trump and the GOP will use to steal the election. The Democratic Party's uneasy relationship with its base.

Comedian David Feldman (@David_Feldman_) joins Sam to discuss what campaign strategy the Democrats should pursue: promise nothing and don't spook the voters. Everyone just needs to chill out, all right?

On the fun half: Trump says political forces want to hold back the vaccine as a "political hit." Trump again tells story when journalist Ali Velshi was hit with tear gas cannister. Rick Scott struggles through speech about how left is destroying American values. Florida AG shares office's plan to investigate Bloomberg's efforts to pay formerly incarcerated residents poll tax fees. On today's show: The Majority Report continues its memorial to Michael Brooks with his 2016 interview of Jacobin's Peter Frase (@pefrase) on his book Four Futures: Life After Capitalism, wherein Brooks and Frase consider the possibility of various post-capitalist futures where full automation has been achieved and the climate crisis either has or has not been solved. Using combinations of abundance/scarcity and equality/hierarchy, Frase lays out four wildly divergent paths, from the eternal peace of communism (abundance and equality), to the horrors of exterminism (scarcity and hierarchy).

Trump refuses to agree to a peaceful transition of power, complains about mail-in ballots. Nancy Pelosi clapback: "He’s trying to have the constitution of the United States swallow Clorox." Lindsey Graham says there will be a peaceful transition after we seat 9th justice.

On the fun half: Fauci is fed up with Rand Paul, who continues to insist NY did an exceptionally bad job and only has a low infection rate now because of herd immunity (neither claim is true). Dave Rubin fails to convince Bob Saget that 18% flat tax is good idea. Charlie Kirk waves poetic about how funny Trump is. Biden 2020 BLM "anarchy" graffiti. Footage of protestors pulling signs from U-Haul in Louisville; Laura Ingraham wants to know who paid for that U-Haul. Rep. Kevin McCarthy says protests against police brutality are organized on Fox and Friends. Plus, your calls and IMs!

On the fun half: Matt Stoller Twitter thread about Congress and the courts. Sam hosts Cornell Professor of American Institutions Suzanne Mettler to discuss her latest book, Four Threats: The Recurring Crises of American Democracy and what we can learn from history to understand American democracy's vulnerabilities. Mettler and Sam explore the moments in American history when the citizenry was worried about "democratic deterioration" and democratic backsliding and what caused those concerns. Mettler explains how her book explores the ostensibly settled elements of democracy, like voting rights. Mettler and Sam also recount the Wilmington, North Carolina insurrection story in 1898 when white citizens massacred black citizens and formed a constitutional convention to institute poll taxes and anti-democratic systems.

And in the Fun Half: Trump downplays covid in Ohio while supporters boo pleads to wear masks, the right prepares for Amy Coney Barrett, why voting in 2020 matters, 1996 Sam Seder calls in to ask about 2020, Kelly Loeffler is Atilla the Hun, Dave Rubin the non-partisan lefty conservative, plus your calls and IMs!

The Majority Report's retrospective of Michael Brooks' career continues with a 2018 interview with Zero Books' Douglas Lain (@DougLain). In the wake of Bari Weiss' breathless NYT profile, Michael and Doug tackle the much discussed and hotly debated “Intellectual Dark Web,” the internet’s latest cast of “renegades” shaking things up in the American sociopolitical discourse. While they claim to promote open debate and discourse, it turns out the IDW is open to any idea besides the idea that they might be racist or sexist.

Vietnam War leaker Daniel Ellsberg warns against extraditing Julian Assange.

On the fun half: Trump-appointed FBI director Christopher Wray testifies that "Antifa" is not a real group, the most dangerous terrorists are white nationalists, and Russia is trying to undermine the election. Military considered using "heat ray" on DC protesters. Charlie Kirk freaks out about what the left will do to the right if Trump loses. A breakdown of the insufficient reforms offered up by the Louisville PD as part of the $12 million Breonna Taylor settlement. US Rep. Jodey Arrington (R-TX) rails against a bill condemning anti-Asian rhetoric around Covid-19: "This is dividing our country!" Plus, your calls and IMs.

Donald Trump's private thoughts on Covid from April 13 are a bit of a contrast from his public statment on April 17.

Then Sam is joined by historian Thomas Frank to discuss his new book, "The People, No: A Brief History of Anti-Populism." What is the American history of populism? Is it an attitude, a policy set, a campaign style?

And on the fun half:

Trump, Roger Stone, and Mark Levin really flexing election-stealing muscles. Steve Doocy valiantly defends press freedom. Trump thinks the forest fires may start cooling. Joe Biden calls Trump a climate arsonist, and Jared Kushner has purged the admin of "confident idiots."

Sam is joined by Martha S. Jones (@marthasjones_), Professor of History at Johns Hopkins University, to discuss her new book, 'Vanguard: How Black Women Broke Barriers, Won the Vote, and Insisted on Equality for All.'

On today's show: Brian Kilmeade and Tom Cotton defend Trump's handling of Covid: "What do you expect the president, who's spent 50 years in business, to know about this pandemic that's the first thing like it we've seen since 1918?”

Sam is joined by Martha S. Jones (@marthasjones_), Professor of History at Johns Hopkins University, to discuss her new book, 'Vanguard: How Black Women Broke Barriers, Won the Vote, and Insisted on Equality for All.' While most people think that all women got the right to vote with the passage of the 19th amendment in 1920, this is not true; most black women were effectively barred from voting until many decades later. In this book, Jones traces the work of activists including Sojourner Truth, Jarena Lee, Fannie Lou Hamer, and more, to show how black women fought both racism and sexism to advocate for their rights at the ballot box and beyond.

On the fun half: Trump with Judge Jeanine on Saturday, on federal forces' killing of a purported antifa sympathizer who allegedly killed someone in Portland: "This guy was a violent criminal...there has to be retribution." Trump further expounds on the killing at rally: "We sent in the US marshals, it was taken care of in 15 minutes." Trump speculates re: Biden’s use of performances-enhancing drugs. Jake Tapper and Peter Navarro, White House Trade Advisor, argue about Trump’s public/private statements about Covid in February. Bernstein scolds Sam for criticizing Woodward at staged reading of "All the President’s Men." Minot, ND Councilwoman Carrie Evans goes off on a homophobe at council meeting over displaying the rainbow flag. Joe Rogan whines about Nomiki saying Dave Rubin’s clip about human cloning is dumb, should be de-platformed. On Fox and Friends, TX Governor Abbott tells Steve Doocy how the state can fight local police defunding efforts. FBI Portland denies rumors that extremists are starting the fires. Jimmy Dore claims people who believe in Russiagate are as gullible and stupid as the Qanon people. Plus, your calls and IMs!

Sam hosts Shahid Buttar (@ShahidForChange), candidate for CA-12 challenging Nancy Pelosi, to discuss his campaign, Pelosi's leadership failures, California's wildfires, and the week's most important headlines.

On today's show: Tucker Carlson says it's Lindsey Graham's fault that Trump talked to Bob Woodward.

Shahid Buttar (@ShahidForChange) joins Sam to discuss his campaign and break down the news. Shahid addresses the allegations against him. APRIL 26: Pelosi tells those critical of lack of state/local funds in CARES ACT "calm down." AUGUST: Nancy Pelosi says she's praying new stimulus negotiations will resume soon. How Pelosi's leadership failures are connected to her corporate donors. How the Democrats' malfeasance fuels right-wing populism. Chris Coons' connection to the nursing home industry.

On the fun half: At rally, Trump says Biden will destroy social security and protections for pre-existing conditions. Ben Shapiro says Trump wasn't downplaying Covid anymore than Cuomo, "everyone was figuring this out at same time." Bret Baier shuts down Trump campaign spokesperson’s lies about Woodward tapes. Tucker says America is not white supremacist country because if it was liberals would not encourage immigration, since that would essentially be premeditated murder. Tucker's ahistorical lessons: says 1908 is like 2020, says Springfield race riot is like 2020. TV broadcast seems to show chiefs fans booing players' sign of unity before game. The Majority Report continues to look back at Michael Brooks's career with a 2019 interview featuring Liz Franczak (@liz_franczak) to discuss her essay in the Baffler, “The Century of Spin,” and the origins of neoliberal sociopolitical culture. Liz Franczak recounts the story of Edward Bernays, who “pioneered the field of modern public relations after serving under Woodrow Wilson during World War I, overseeing propaganda initiatives aimed at selling the war to the public and maximizing recruiting efforts.”

Sheriff of Spokane, WA whines about media's pro-Antifa bias, Spongebob memes in 45 minute press conference.

On the fun half: The right tries to pin CA wildfires on Antifa. An organizer from the University of Michigan grad student strike calls in with updates; learn more and donate to their strike fund at geo3550.org. Richie Torres tells pro-Israel lobbying group that DSA is evil because they support BDS, will rot progressive movement from the inside. Democratic Majority for Israel board member says she wishes they could clone Richie Torres. Asked about withholding truth about Covid realities, Trump calls himself cheerleader of the country. Morning Joe says that Bernie Sanders socialism does not play well with Latinos, especially in Florida. Sam and the MR Crew break down the week's biggest headlines including November's general election, the next stage of COVID, and Trump's personal DOJ.

On today's show: Big boats sink small boats in Texas Trump boat parade. Trump says he will return "patriotic education" to nation's schools, says they'll take away your great heroes. Thom Tillis issues apology statement after a staffer is caught on tape saying what Republicans actually believe on healthcare. Study: increased 2018 Dem turnout due to hatred of Trump, concern over healthcare. March 19: Trump says he's downplaying Covid because he doesn't want to create a "panic" (in the markets). Michael Cohen says he thinks if Trump loses, he will resign and have Pence pardon him.

On the fun half: Fox and Friends concern troll about voting twice in Georgia and the "red mirage" (where one candidate appears to win on Election Day, but another wins after all votes are tallied). Fox and Friends celebrate Norwegian right wing nationalist nominating Trump to be considered for Noble Peace Prize (again). DoJ replaces Trump’s personal legal team to defend against defamation suit from woman who says he raped her at Macy’s. Sean Hannity and Dave Rubin can't get on the same page about their bit about keyboard warriors in their moms' basements. Trump says he's the greatest environmentalist president since TR, and if he does another bill he'll be better than TR. Fauci says it's more realistic to expect a vaccine by end of 2020 but not by November. Mark Zuckerberg explains that Facebook is not dominated by right-wing media, says it's a space where people can "use their voice." Facebook's top 10 performing posts past 24 hours: Trump, Hannity, etc. Kevin Roose tweet about top performing post on FB, a Qanon story about "save the children" child trafficking conspiracy. Andersen and Sam begin their conversation discussing the power of nostalgia and how it took such a hold in American culture after the 60s counterrevolution and civil rights movement. The two continue their conversation discussing the Lewis Powell memo and how corporate leaders wanted to change public sentiment towards corporate capitalism. Sam also explains his appreciation of Andersen's novel Turn of the Century and Andersen shares how his political attitudes changed during that period at the beginning of the 21st century. Andersen and Sam conclude the conversation as to what lies ahead for younger generations of Americans and how does Joe Biden help usher in change, maybe.

And in the Fun Half: Trump is mad at John McCain and the military-industrial complex he empowers, Louis DeJoy is in hot water over campaign finance laws, updates from a teacher at the frontlines of the new Covid frontlines,

Sam hosts former Republican strategist and consultant Stuart Stevens (@stuartpstevens) to discuss his new book It Was All a Lie: How the Republican Party Became Donald Trump on how the GOP was always destined to become the party of Trump. While the Republican Party once stood for principles like "limited government" and "personal responsibility," Stevens believes its worst tendencies have long since taken over and enabled the rise of Trump. Sam takes Stevens to task for some of these assumptions, prompting a lively exchange of ideas.

On the fun half: Greg Gutfeld doesn't see why we need thousands of teachers teaching the same lessons to kids, suggests Peloton for education. Asked to explain thug plane plot, Trump says he'll put reporter in touch with guy who told him the story...turns out it came from the Facebook page of Russ Thor Wade of Patriot Prayer. Asked about the importance of 2020 turnout and winning popular vote, Trump says he won popular vote in 2016. Trump wants a performance enhancing drug test for him and Biden before debate. Kilmeade says there are protestors with earpieces and weapons all over the country, says it's organized. Steve Doocy is just asking the questions if BLM is organized and being funded by dark money. Kilmeade asks why government can't break Antifa like al Qaeda or Hezbollah. Plus, your calls and IMs!

Sam hosts author and historian Rick Perlstein to discuss his latest book, Reaganland: America's Right Turn 1976-1980, the dramatic conclusion of how conservatism took control of American political power. Sam and Rick begin their conversation discussing the role of Pat Caddell and how the Democratic party moved right starting during the Carter administration. Perlstein lays out the role power of the new evangelist political movement that at first helped Jimmy Carter but because the Democratic president did not embrace a fundamentalist policy program, turned to the open embrace of Reagan and the conservative movement. Shifting gears, Perlstein explains how California proposition 13, which decreased property taxes by assessing values at their 1976 value and restricted annual increases of assessed value to an inflation factor, helped destroy state tax bases and funding to public school systems, but helped usher in tax-cutting and "small government" as the primary policy set of Reagan conservatives. Sam and Rick conclude their conversation considering how democratic politicians failed to offer an alternative to small government conservatism leading to the Reagan era.

And in the Fun Half: Trump telegraphs his racist suburban voter appeals with Laura Ingraham, Tucker Carlson hosts Kyle Rittenhouse's lawyer, conservative media continues to throw things against Biden's campaign, why defeating Trump is the best way to bring back libertarian callers, the efficacy of taking on the IDW grifters, the potential teacher strikes, plus your calls and IMs!
