It's Hump Day! Sam speaks with Ibrahim Al-Marashi, Associate Professor of History at the California State University San Marcos, to discuss his recent writing on the Wagner Group and Blackwater. Then, he is joined by Harold Meyerson, editor-at-large at The American Prospect, to discuss the recent decisions made at the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB). First, Sam runs through updates on the Department of Labor’s overtime change, the delay of the Proud Boys’ sentencing, the labor market, Hurricane Idalia, and other natural disaster and climate updates, before parsing through Biden’s Medicare and student debt agenda. Ibrahim Al-Marashi then dives right into Blackwater’s blueprint for the Wagner Group, and the role of South Africa’s Executive Outcomes in setting the stage for them both, exploring how these three groups were the outcome of their nations capitalizing on the demobilization of state military by funding independent mercenary groups that largely work outside of any accountability apparatus, be it international of public. Expanding on this, Al-Marashi walks through the immense role Blackwater played in US involvement in Iraq, helping commit atrocities in the US’ name without requiring a greater loss of US soldiers, before expanding on the Wagner Group’s relationship to Russia beyond its role in Ukraine, with its operations largely located in Africa, where they’ve spent time warlording and extracting from local communities, all while Russia denied operations in the region. Wrapping up, Sam and Ibrahim walk through the conflict between state militaries and contracted forces, and explore the role that has, and will continue to play in Russia’s floundering invasion of Ukraine. Harold Meyerson then joins, contextualizing the NLRB’s recent Cemex ruling as one of the most empowering labor developments in a half-century of dwindling organizing, and why Jennifer Abruzzo’s Board has chosen now as their moment to be active. Next, he and Sam parse through the actual details of the Cemex decision, why it’s a great first step back towards the Joy-Silk doctrine of the NLRB, and how it aids in both forcing bargaining and punishing union busting. Wrapping up, Meyerson expands on the necessity of labor unions to capitalize on this moment, as they finally have both leverage and public opinion on their side, as well as touching on the role the Supreme Court and Senate have yet to play.

And in the Fun Half: Sam watches the Right meltdown over Oliver Anthony not being a Republican, Nick from St. Louis calls in with a Prigozhin conspiracy, Okajic in NY relays Vivek’s newest freestyle, and Tim Pool accidentally reveals a pattern about his programming. Graham from Maine expands on the evolution of Blackwater, and Mitch McConnell stares into the void, plus, your calls and IMs!

It's News Day Tuesday! Sam and Emma break down the biggest headlines of the day. First, They run through updates on Donald Trump’s federal trial date, the New Hampshire GOP’s civil war over the 2024 Primary ballot, Trump’s rampant support in Georgia, increasing COVID hospitalization rates, and Biden and Lula’s plan to call for improved labor conditions, before watching Jesse Watters do some wildly racist pandering to Black people over Trump’s mugshot. Sam and Emma then parse through the upcoming Medicare drug price negotiations, looking at how Biden’s IRA got us here, what his plan for the negotiations is, and how this particular element allows the US government to save en masse and will likely push down drug prices for the rest of us. After tackling the likely lawsuits that will follow Biden’s attempt to impose these negotiations, they shift the conversation to the NLRB’s massive ruling on union busting in the leadup to elections, first contextualizing the NLRB’s doctrine for much of the 20th Century (and why that doctrine got changed) that helped keep union elections legitimate, before walking through the specifics of the recent Cemex Construction ruling, and how it forces employers to bargain and threatens union busting with full unionization. Wrapping up, Sam and Emma discuss Trader Joe’s United filing the first Cemex Bargaining Order, and the unionization attempt in Disney’s VFX department.

And in the Fun Half: Sam and Emma discuss Kevin McCarthy finally coming around on the futile impeachment claims against Joe Biden, John from Eugene explores the feasibility of various gun control arguments, Willow from Minnesota parses through trans migration in the US and dealing with general despair over the lasting assault on trans rights from the GOP. Zach from Colorado calls in to cover discrimination in the medical education system, and Glenn Beck calls for restoring an era of social security that never existed, plus, your calls and IMs!

Happy Monday! Sam is BACK from vacation. He and Emma speak with Richard Kahlenberg, education & housing policy consultant and non-resident fellow at Georgetown University, to discuss his recent book Excluded: How Snob Zoning, NIMBYism and Class Bias Build the Walls We Don't See. First, Sam and Emma run through updates on Trump’s various legal woes, this weekend’s white supremacist mass shooting in Florida, the UAW’s tentative agreement with auto companies, the NLRB’s massive new ruling to empower unions, and various conservative political operations, like CPAC and No Labels, before looking at the local response in Jacksonville to the racist shooting of four Black people. Richard Kahlenberg then dives right into why the incredibly dry topic of housing zoning inspires rabid reactions and fundamentally shapes so much of our social stratification. Kahlenberg then parses through the relationship between class and race in US public policy, and how they frequently act as proxies for each other, becoming tightly bound in how they must be addressed, as seen in the shift from extreme racial segregation to extreme class segregation coming out of the Civil Rights era, and how this economic stratification so neatly feeds into educational segregation. After walking through his primary case study of Scarsdale and Port Chester, in upstate New York, Sam, Emma, and Richard discuss Reihan Salam’s recent response to Kahlenberg’s work, as they tackle how deeply tied up in elitist and hyper-individualist culture the vast majority of exclusionary housing policy is. Wrapping up, they tackle Kahlenberg’s major policy projects and suggestions to push back against these exclusionary zoning laws (even when the wealthy communities object), and work through the local models for both sides of the zoning debate.

And in the Fun Half: Sam and Emma watch Vivek Ramaswamy get absolutely bodied by Chuck Todd and Dana Bash over his comments about anti-racists being more racist than racists, parse through the DeSantis Campaign entering its clearance sale era, and do a deeep dive on Jesse Singal’s recent freak out over MR’s coverage of his misinformation campaign last week. Wrapping up, the MR Team unpacks Tim Pool’s recent endorsement of shaming all women, plus, your calls and IMs!

It's Casual Friday! Emma speaks with Jamelle Bouie, opinion columnist at the New York Times and co-host of the Unclear and Present Danger podcast, to round up the week in news. Then, she's joined by David Doel, host of The Rational National! First, Emma runs through updates on the booking of Donald Trump, the various attacks on the prosecutor Fani Willis, the UAW, Putin’s totally earnest response to the slaying of Prigozhin, Ukraine’s counter-offensive in Crimea, the Ohio GOP’s anti-democratic move against abortion, Maui’s lawsuit against Hawaiian Electric, and a brand new COVID surge, before parsing a little deeper through the various routes the GOP is trying to take to undermine Fani Willis’ prosecution of Donald J. Trump. Jamelle Bouie then walks through his perspective on the showmanship of Donald Trump, as Bouie and Emma tackle the genuine legitimacy of the charges against him, and the greater revelations that have come out of the legal process. After expanding on Georgia Gov. Kemp’s avenue to undermine Fani Willis, and why we can trust elements of the jury process, Bouie and Emma dive into this week’s GOP Presidential debate, how they read the various candidates, and the GOP’s reversion to entitlements without the presence of Trump. Wrapping up, they assess the dismal vibe of the GOP platform heading into the 2024 elections. David Doel then joins as he reflects on his MR debut, the release of the DT Mugshot, and discusses Trump’s admiration of Vivek Ramaswamy’s admiration of him. Doel concludes the interview with a fervent apology for the existence of Jordan Peterson on behalf of Canada, before he and Emma bask in JP’s ongoing downfall on the professional and personal levels.

And in the Fun Half: Emma tackles the fantastic new NLRB ruling on busting union votes, Asa Hutchinson discusses Donald Trump’s disqualifiers, and the MR Crew discusses a harrowing story coming out of Pittsburgh that has 75 police officers on leave. The New York Times continues its malevolent coverage of trans issues, uplifting an already-debunked whistleblower without any new information, and Donald Trump gets back to the important issues (ratings), plus, your calls and IMs!

It's an EmMajority Report Thursday! She speaks with Richard Wiles, President of The Center for Climate Integrity, to discuss the recent efforts to file lawsuits against Big Oil companies for violating racketeering laws. Then, she's joined by Eleni Schirmer, organizer with Debt Collective, to discuss where things stand at the 1-year anniversary mark of President Biden's student debt relief plan. First, Emma runs through updates on the release of Trump’s co-conspirators' mugshots, the death of Prigozhin, potential action from the executive branch, fascist policy in South Carolina and Florida, right to repair, environmental disaster, and SpaceX’s hiring discrimination, before parsing through their initial responses to last night’s GOP Presidential debate, and watching some highlights from Trump and Tucker’s broadcast on X. Richard Wiles then joins as he dives right into why litigation has proved to be a promising avenue in the fight against climate change, as – while it doesn’t allow for actual solutions – it provides the opportunity to hold to account the companies responsible, and reaffirm in the public eye what we already know about the mass and ongoing coverup of the climate emergency. Wiles then parses through the blueprint set by cases against the Tobacco and Opioid industries, respectively, and the long history of politicians asking the DOJ to pursue similar claims against Exxon, Shell, and co. Next, Wiles walks us through the various legal avenues open to the DOJ, including base-level fraud charges, versus a much larger RICO case, and why the former allows for bigger financial accountability, while the latter forces open and active communication in any future marketing or sales of fossil fuels, before wrapping up by assessing the Biden administration’s shaky record on climate change, and how this case could change that. Eleni Schirmer and Emma then jump right into the Biden administration’s complete failure in the very delayed rollout of their student debt relief plan, tackling the problems with Biden’s avenue for justification, and why his fear of outright cancellation forced him into undermining his own program. Stepping back, Schirmer then walks through her recent work on the massive lasting impact of student debt among older generations, before tackling the Debt Collective’s work on pushing forward a new plan to cancel student debt, why Joe Biden and the DOE have already proven it’s possible, and a new tool that can help make it possible for even more debtors. Wrapping up, Schirmer and Emma explore Biden’s personal relationship to the world of creditors, and how his approach to canceling student debt may evolve.

And in the Fun Half: Emma is joined by Brandon Sutton and Matt Binder as they watch Tucker’s incredibly odd interview questions for Trump, during the Presidential debate, before watching Ron DeSantis’ incredibly awkward dance routine to defend Donald Trump, Vivek’s extreme approach on the debate stage, and Nikki Haley and Vivek Ramaswamy’s apartheid-measuring contest. Newsmax freaks out over a kids’ streaming platform censoring music, Mehmet from Newton dives into the rollout of the Trump indictment, and Terry from Georgia discusses Medicare for All’s messaging, plus, your calls and IMs!

It's Hump Day! First, Emma speaks with attorney Stephen Bright and James Kwak, law professor at the University of Connecticut, to discuss their recent book The Fear of Too Much Justice: Race, Poverty, and the Insistence of Inequality in the Criminal Courts. Then, she's joined by writer Katherine Stewart to discuss her recent piece in The New Republic entitled "The Claremont Institute: The Anti-Democracy Think Tank".  First, Emma runs through updates on tonight's GOP Presidential Debate, Trump’s various legal battles, the UPS-Teamsters agreement, Hollywood’s anti-labor action, child labor in the US, Ed Bloom’s new anti-education lawsuit, a potential Oregon Supreme Court case on homelessness, and various geopolitical discourses, before admiring Climate Defiance’s recent action in front of a Maura Healey fundraiser. Stephen Bright and James Kwak then join, first diving into Bright’s history with capital punishment in the US over the last four decades, making him ever so intimate with the criminal-legal system’s myriad injustices, blatant race discrimination, and severe power imbalance in favor of the prosecution, before stepping back to analyze why the conversation of the role of race and poverty in capital punishment is so centered on the southern US, despite racism, poverty, and death sentences all existing in the north as well. Next, Bright and Kwak parse through the drastic power imbalance that comes from the simultaneous hyper-politicization of the legal system through prosecutors alongside the deprioritization and underfunding of public defense, walking countless examples of prosecutorial injustice and the malpractice of certain supposed public defenders. Bright and Kwak then focus on the Supreme Court case of McCleskey v. Kemp, and the eventual decision that, despite overwhelming evidence of racist bias in the endorsement, sentencing, and execution of the death sentence, said bias cannot be used as an argument in individual cases, in “fear of too much justice, before wrapping up by walking through the compiling and countless injustices of the criminal legal system and its death penalty. Katherine Stewart then walks Emma through the greater history of the Claremont Institute, and its evolution from a standard conservative think tank to the far-right, anti-democratic, neo-confederate thought leader that it is today – playing host to multiple Trump co-conspirators. Stewart begins by tackling the basis for the institution’s radicalization, including who the major players were, and the bigoted arguments they were able to put forth, from gender and race segregation to citing public Nazis as inspiration, before wrapping up with its culmination in the battle against “woke,” the right’s attacks on education, and their ultimate goal of affirmative action for conservative men.

And in the Fun Half: Emma tackles the renters’ nightmare that is the modern-day United States, Dave from Jamaica critiques recent “male loneliness discourse,” Tim Pool and Moonlord eviscerate the non-existent authoritarian hygiene and total-lockdown policies of the COVID-19 pandemic, and Noel from Queens tackles the Democrats’ need to be aggressive about literally anything. Newsmax goes all-in on homophobia, a Televangelist comes for Barbie’s Dreamhouse, and Bailey from NC expands on the hell of economic life in America, plus, your calls and IMs!

Happy Monday! Emma speaks with Rebecca Ruth Gould, Professor of Islamic World & Comparative Literature at the University of Birmingham, to discuss her recent book Erasing Palestine: Free Speech and Palestinian Freedom. Then, she speaks with Jessie Kelly, a member of UAW Local 160 at the General Motors Technical Center in Warren, Michigan, and Chair of Communications for local 160, to discuss the UAW's potential strike that may be coming in September. First, Emma runs through updates on Guatemala’s rebuke of the conservative establishment, disaster in Southern California, the rebuilding effort in Lahaina and conflicts between community and capital, Biden’s visit to Maui, Trump’s reign over the GOP, a new COVID booster, rampant homophobia in the US, and the massive mounting death toll between Russia and Ukraine, before diving into Fox News’ continuing attempts to push anti-environmental propaganda. Rebecca Ruth Gould then joins, diving right into her history as a Jewish American that briefly lived in the West Bank while working, via multi-hour and multi-checkpoint commutes, in Jerusalem. Gould first reflects on the radicalization she underwent with her first-hand experience of the Israeli apartheid state, from the active separation of worlds to the continuing settler-colonial violence, which resulted in her publishing of an article entitled “Beyond Antisemitism,” on the weaponization of the Holocaust and antisemitism. Jumping ahead in her life, she explores how this article, despite being a single moment in her career as an academic, came back around during her career teaching at University in the UK as a student attempted to cite the work as an example of pure antisemitism – solely on its criticisms of Israel – a claim that was taken seriously by a British establishment that had just seen Theresa May affirm the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance’s definition of antisemitism, which largely focuses on any criticism of Israel in their examples. Expanding on this, Gould parses through the IHRA’s actual definition, what was so problematic about the guidelines that came alongside the definition, how it homogenizes an already marginalized group, and why forcing states to define antisemitism beyond “prejudice against Jewish people” is an issue. Wrapping up, Rebecca Ruth Gould explores the worsening violence around Israeli apartheid in recent years, despite turning public opinion against it, and talks with Emma about parallels between Israeli and US colonialism. Jessie Kelly then walks through the inspiring leadership of Shawn Fain and the UAW team during the recent bargaining session, the importance of militant organizing and rhetoric, and the state of the bargaining process (despite everything the auto manufacturers are doing not to bargain), before wrapping up by discussing the growing strength of labor in the US, and the process of labor radicalization.

And in the Fun Half: Emma watches famed bigot Riley Gaines argue for female inferiority in intellect, Kowalski from Nebraska gives an update on the state of agriculture in the US (and what Jerome Powell is doing to prevent the spread of food), and Liz from PA explores the problems with population control. The MR Team basks in Ron DeSantis’ marvelous collapse, watches Shawn Fain pump up UAW workers, and listens to Matt Damon eviscerate an anti-union libertarian. Bato T from Washington discusses working in a teachers’ union, and Ethan from LA explores the problems of leftist infighting, plus, your calls and IMs!

It's a Very Casual Friday! Since Sam and Emma are out of town, the MR Crew are off. But in the meantime, check out this interview Sam and Emma did with Andrew Seidel, attorney with Americans United for Separation of Church and State, on his recent book American Crusade: How the Supreme Court Is Weaponizing Religious Freedom. Andrew Seidel begins by providing background on the recent rise of a billion-dollar shadow network of Christian Nationalist organizations and judicial allies, with these modern “crusaders” attempting to redefine and pervert the meaning of the US constitutional right to religious freedom, using various realms of the private/public sphere – from bakers to coaches to schools and websites – to litigate the supreme privilege of Christian identity in the US via the courts. Seidel then quickly runs through the major breakthroughs in the Christian Right’s barrage on the US legal system, from the Mojave Memorial Cross case in 2010, and the acknowledgment of the Supreme Court that they would be willing to – at a minimum – participate in this discourse (and opening up the floodgates to countless filing), through the cementing of a conservative majority under Donald J. Trump, alongside the increasing publication of clear collusion and corruption among US Justices. Stepping back, Seidel then works to define the line between belief and action that defines the US conception of religious freedom, the right to act on one’s religious beliefs insofar as they do not infringe on the rights of others, and the pre-21st Century understanding that this, indeed, was the perspective set out by the framers, before tackling the slow perversion of this concept to solely protect the rights of Christians, while other religions – as seen in the Muslim Ban and the evangelizing of Coach Kennedy – are pushed to the side and gaslit. After exploring the state behind SCOTUS’ turn towards Christian supremacy and parsing through the details of RFRA – and whether its 1993 passage foresaw the conservatives’ abuses of it – they wrap up with where the battle against theocratic fascism goes from here.

It's another EmMajority Report Thursday! She speaks with Ben Terris, writer in the Washington Post's Style section, to discuss his recent book The Big Break: The Gamblers, Party Animals, and True Believers Trying to Win in Washington While America Loses Its Mind. Then, she's joined by Kaniela Ing, National Director of the Green New Deal Network and former member of the Hawaii House of Representatives, to discuss the ongoing recovery efforts from the Maui wildfires, and how the aftereffects of colonialism are still affecting Hawaii to this day. First, Emma runs through updates on the Maui wildfires’ climbing death toll, another wildfire in Canada, Trump’s legal cases, Rudy’s legal bills, the upcoming UAW strike vote, abortion rights in the US, action from far-right legislatures in the US, and a potential Lula-Biden meeting, before diving into recent revelations on Roger Stone’s most unsurprising role in Trump’s conspiracy. Ben Terris then joins, diving right into his project studying the impact of Trump’s “shock” to the DC system, and how his victory inflamed all of the worst elements of the Capitol, making it somehow even more grifty, shifty, and power-hungry. Terris dives into his work profiling Matt Schlapp, Robert Stryk, and Sean McElwee, to explore how they capitalized on a shifting power structure in DC by clinging firmly to Trump, knowing the right people, and betting their way to the top, respectively. Kaniela Ing then joins as he first provides background on the devastating impact of the recent wildfires in Maui, burning through the capital of the Hawaiian Kingdom, Lahaina, with thousands missing alongside the over 100 declared dead. After walking through the response from the Hawaiian community, as well as the best way to help from the outside, Ing and Emma tackle the ongoing invasion of disaster capitalists in the wake, attempting to extort devastated Hawaiians for their land, and coming in under the guise of aid solely to exploit. Wrapping up, Kaniela walks through Hawaii’s history with colonial capitalism (particularly in the wake of disasters), and what the major challenges of the rebuilding process will be.

And in the Fun Half: Emma is joined by Brandon Sutton and Matt Binder as they discuss the outrageous second attempt at canceling Richard Hanania for doing race science again, watch Bill Maher expertly interrupt Marianne Williamson to explain that poor people don’t matter because he can’t see them, and a caller from Baltimore poorly starts a conversation on law and marginalized rights. Nick from Houston Food Not Bombs calls in to explore Houston’s criminalization of feeding the homeless as a part of the US’ greater fascistic attack on the unhoused, and Kristi Noem makes Hillary Clinton look good. Rudy Giuliani continues his pathetic little downfall, and Guy from Charlotte calls in about the Right's love for ahistory, plus, your calls and IMs!

It's Hump Day! Emma speaks with Vinnie Perrone, President of Teamsters Local 804, to discuss the recent tentative agreement reached between the Teamsters and UPS. Then, Emma speaks with Rebecca Lewis, senior state politics reporter at City & State New York, to discuss her recent reporting on the introduction on safe injection sites in the state. First, Emma runs through updates on the slow uncovering of the Maui wildfires death count, Biden’s environmental regulations, FBI shenanigans, the continuing abuse of Dianne Feinstein, DNC’s new chair, fascist politics in North Carolina, and RFK teaming up with a sitting GOP Rep, before diving into the spectacular fall of Rudy Giuliani and his myriad ongoing legal battles – from the Trump indictments to his own interpersonal and financial abuses. Vinnie Perrone then joins as he helps to contextualize the historic agreement made between the Teamsters and UPS, walking through the massive concessions from UPS’ side (aka decent labor practices), from Holidays to anti-labor technology, before tackling the major victory on the Teamsters’ front: the elimination of UPS two-tiered wage system. Expanding on this, Perrone walks Emma through the myriad elements of UPS’ system that needed restructuring, and how the deal helped bring about 7,500 full-time promotions, before parsing a little further through new policies on certain anti-labor tech and workplace environments. They wrap up the interview by discussing the Teamsters’ labor action within the context of the COVID-19 pandemic and the recent influx in labor action in the US. Rebecca Lewis and Emma then dive into what Safe Injection Sites are, and how they made their way to the forefront of the harm reduction debate around drug abuse in the US, tackling their immense success for decades outside of the US, and the proven lack of any negative impact on local drug use. Next, Lewis walks Emma through recent statements made by the US Attorney for the Southern District of New York awkwardly targeting the recent small-scale Safe-Injection Sites, despite the Districts’s long-standing role within the US judicial system, and the genuine support across NYC Mayors for this initiative. Wrapping up, Lewis parses through the slow introduction of this policy over decades of shifting public opinion toward drug addiction, and how the battle will be waged moving forwards.

And in the Fun Half: Emma and the MR Team reflect on the fascist inclinations that come over the wealthy when it comes to the homeless and impoverished, Amber from Northern Virginia dives into Gov. Youngkin’s anti-trans agenda, and Tim Pool posits the idea of Chinese Space Lasers starting the Maui wildfires. Armando from Portland on how to protect places (like Maui) from disaster capitalism, and Michael Flynn wonders why the Jews didn’t push back against Nazi discrimination. UAW president Shawn Fain absolutely eviscerates the anti-labor narratives against both autoworkers and Hollywood workers, and Jason Whitlock perfectly demonstrates the astroturfed absurdity of the right’s new Anthem, plus, your calls and IMs!

It's News Day Tuesday! But first, Sam and Emma speak with Murtaza Hussain, reporter at The Intercept, to discuss recent reporting from him and Ryan Grim involving the U.S.'s previously unreported pressure campaign to remove Pakistani Prime Minister Imran Khan from power. First, Sam and Emma run through updates on a ruling in Montana on the role of climate change in governmental considerations, labor action in Hollywood, as well as with the SEIU, the climbing death toll in Hawaii, DeSantis cucking to even Disney, and Russian attacks in western Ukraine, before diving into the massive indictment of Donald Trump (and 18 allies) coming out of Georgia. Murtaza Hussain then dives right into a summary of the diplomatic cable between the US State Department and the Pakistani ambassador to the US that was recently unearthed, first walking through the background on tensions between the US and Pakistan’s former Prime Minister Imran Khan over Khan’s “aggressive neutrality” towards the Russian invasion of Ukraine, and unpacking the theorized contents of the cable surrounding the US pressuring Pakistan to move forward with a vote of no confidence against Khan. After parsing through the exact details of the exchange (which was very much what had been theorized), Hussain steps back to walk Sam and Emma through Khan’s relationship to Pakistani politics as a whole, his entrance into the political realm as an objector to US intervention in the region, his turn against the military (and theirs against him), and his overwhelming public support despite a recent three-year sentencing to political imprisonment. Wrapping up, they reflect deeper on what we can learn about the US involvement in throwing their weight behind an anti-democratic movement in Pakistan – one suspected of myriad crimes against journalists, politicians, and citizens – from the recently revealed messages.

And in the Fun Half: Sebastian Gorka goes on Newsmax to absolutely rail against the SUPPOSED crime of conspiracy?! as the MR crew reflects on Donald Trump’s myriad ongoing legal issues, and watch 2014 Ben Shapiro totally school 2023 Ben Shapiro on bootlicking (kind of). RFK continues his strong left-wing campaign against public health, abortion rights, and financial regulation, and a harrowing story of a pre-teen’s forced birth comes out of Mississippi. The team also watches some killer labor action coming out of Detroit, before analyzing a clip of Matt Walsh, theocratic fascist, being a theocratic fascist, plus, your calls and IMs!

It's a special edition of the Majority Report: The MR Crew are celebrating the life of Michael Brooks, as his 40TH BIRTHDAY was yesterday. They're joined by a number of friends and former guests of The Michael Brooks Show to commemorate.

Guests on the show today: Lisha Brooks, Michael's sister; Luke Mayville of Reclaim Idaho, TV, film, and video producer Artesia Balthrop, Drew Mikhael, scholar in the Centre for the Study of Ethnic Conflict at Queen’s University Belfast, Ben Burgis, columnist at Jacobin and host of Give Them An Argument With Ben Burgis, and Bhaskar Sunkara, president of The Nation. Plus, some birthday wishes from other friends!

First, Sam and Emma run through updates on Trump’s tampering in Georgia, the civil war amongst his Co-Conspirators, the failures behind the Hawaii wildfires, the Wisconsin GOP’s attack on the state Supreme Court, a potential Assange plea deal, and fascist attacks on education, before diving into the recent raiding of a Kansas Newspaper by local police. Then, Sam, Emma, and the MR Crew are joined by countless guests as they share stories of the beauty, joy, strength, and righteousness that Michael brought into their lives, and the lives of countless others – touching on how he constantly welcomed people into his life, delivered masterful impersonations and impressions, influenced and connected with the politics of strangers and friends alike, grew his vision of cosmopolitan socialism, and so much more.

It's Casual Friday! Emma hosts Alex Pareene, Contributing Editor at the New Republic and co-host of the Politics of Everything podcast, to round up the week in news. Then, she's joined by Francesca Fiorentini, host of The Bitchuation Room podcast! Emma starts off with some more harrowing updates from the wildfires in Maui, where residents were advised by police to jump into the ocean to escape the blaze. Then, MR bestie Alex Pareene joins Emma and the crew to break down the big headlines, starting off with the big win for abortion rights and democracy in Ohio after Issue 1 was rejected by voters. Emma and Alex discuss, given the consistent success that left-leaning issues have had with ballot measures in purple-to-red states, sometimes even more success than actual Democratic politicians, what liberals and the national Democratic party can learn from this. They also wonder if, given the success on the ground in referenda like Issue 1, as well as voters, liberal and independent, now having seen the Republicans assault on democracy with their own eyes on January 6th, 2021, whether the "abortion & January 6th" political strategy is the most salient one going into 2024. They then touch upon the January 6th indictment brought down by Special Counsel Jack Smith on Trump, and how Emma was "libbing out" over the impressive and effective nature of how streamlined Smith made the indictment, seemingly intentionally so. Emma brings up Sam's contention about how Trump is running in the 2024 primary, and how it differs slightly from 2020 and 2016: that Trump, due to all of the legal arenas that he is exposed in going into 2024, is essentially fighting for his life, existentially and politically. News breaks as this discussion is going on, with the announcement from Attorney General Merrick Garland now announcing that he has, upon request, appointed David Weiss, the U.S. attorney in Delaware, regarding the investigation into Hunter Biden. This is SEPARATE from the Robert Hur special counsel into Biden's possession of classified documents, a trend that, Alex points out, has never worked to make Republicans trust that Democrats are being properly overseen and investigated. This leads to a very well-earned discussion on the unique uselessness of Garland as a Cabinet official, compared to someone like FTC chair Lina Khan. The topic turns to Ron DeSantis, whose presidential campaign has continued to crater, and how, in retrospect, it seems as if this implosion has been all but inevitable. Alex marvels at how, even after 7 years of Donald Trump, no one in the Republican Party seems to have any idea on how to actually "deal" with Trump, especially now that, as Matt points out, DeSantis's candidacy is essentially contingent upon an act-of-god taking Trump out of the primary. The MR Crew take a stroll down memory lane, exemplifying Trump's debate prowess in pantsing his fellow primary opponents when Ted Cruz tried to explain "New York values" to a debate audience, remarks that Trump proceeded to destroy him on. This is proof, for Alex, that it almost seems silly that Trump wouldn't want to participate in the first debate in a few weeks, because nothing endears him to voters more, because the talk radio and pro wrestling instincts are actually Trump's strongest (and not DeSantis's). Emma and Alex end their chat discussing yet another bombshell ProPublica report on Justice Clarence Thomas's seemingly endless benefits, trips, and gifts he received from a number of extremely rich benefactors, and what, if anything, congressional Democrats might do to try to rein in corruption on the Supreme Court. The lack of oversight on these unimpeachable justices, and the lack of coherence of any political message coming from the Democrats on what they plan to do to combat the undemocratic nature of the court, will inevitably lead to disillusionment in rank-and-file voters. One last appeal against blanket reverence for institutionalism is made, and then Emma lets bestie Alex go.

Then, Francesca joins the MR Crew right before she was going to head out to walk the picket line in solidarity with the WGA and SAG-AFTRA. They react to CNBC's Jim Cramer's bone-deep fear of UAW President Shawn Fain, and how, per Cramer, the man is seemingly as charismatic as Malcolm X and as frightening as Freddy Krueger. They then take a look into the romance of Ron and Casey DeSantis and how, during an NBCNews interview, Casey outlines how, when she was undergoing treatment for cancer, Ron...picked up their kids from school. They get a few more laughs in at DeSantis's expense, revisiting some of his extremely unnatural retail politicking, before Francesca jumps off.

And in the Fun Half, Emma takes a look at Al Gore's recent TED Talk where he eviscerates the idea of pushing more chips into the middle of the table and investing in carbon capture (something the Biden Administration is literally doing right now), as well as the pick-me girl musings of Rep. Marie Gluesenkamp Perez on Barbenheimer. Plus, your IM's!

It's an EmMajority Report Thursday! She speaks with Sara Marcus, assistant professor of English at the University of Notre Dame, about her recent book Political Disappointment: A Cultural History from Reconstruction to the AIDS Crisis. Then, Emma is joined by Zoya Teirstein, climate change and health reporter at Grist, to discuss her recent reporting on climate change-related illnesses. Emma starts off by highlight reporting in Bloomberg that showed how the city of Minneapolis had beaten back inflation in no small part due to a concerted effort to build more affordable housing in the city. Emma also touches upon Texas Rep. Joaquin Castro's visit to Eagle Pass, Texas, as he surveyed the absolutely evil conditions Texas Gov. Greg Abbott had set up at the Southern border to control and deter migration. Then Emma is joined by Sara, and they begin their conversation by specifying what the moments of "political disappointment" in American history are per her scholarship, and what are the specific characteristics that makes these moments correlate with one another. As Sarah explains, these moments (starting with Reconstruction and ending with the response to the AIDS crisis in the 1980's) bear similarities in the cultural responses to them. Emma notes that the moments that Sara highlights, that of "political disappointment" aren't monocultural historical moments from the 1960's, but ones that center on marginalized communities. Sara observes how the narratives of "progress" perpetuated in American history are ones that are clearly rebutted and contradicted by the experiences of marginalized communities, as writers like WEB Dubois observed in their writings. They then touch on another moment outlined in Sara's research, the Civil Rights Movement, and how her thesis manifested in ideological and strategic conflict between Martin Luther King Jr. & Stokely Carmichael, and how that conflict was ultimately exacerbated by the people reporting on and historicizing it. They jump back in time to Sara's research on the 1930's, specifically the quarrels that characterized the politics surrounding the New Deal, specifically within the American Communist movement in the fight against fascism, and how the factionalism at the time complicated and blurred the lines of racial coalitions at the time. Emma reflects on how some of these notions that Sara outlines, and how they show some strong parallels with some of the disaffection of young voters on the Left who, galvanized by Bernie Sanders' 2016 and 2020 presidential campaigns, are unsure of what may come in the future that may replicate that, if anything. They touch on the feminist movement in the 1960's and 1970's, before ending the conversation on Sara's section on the AIDS crisis.

Then, Emma speaks with Zoya, and asks her to react to some of the footage coming out of the island of Maui in Hawaii, that's been besieged by raging wildfires. Zoya observes that this summer has been a summer of weather extremes across the country, and that the situation in Maui is no different. Emma asks Zoya if she thinks there's been a larger media reckoning in how climate change has been covered, seeing now that, in the context of the air quality issues in New York City earlier in the summer, that extreme weather issues have come home to everyone nationwide as opposed to the protection from them some may expect on the East Coast in urban centers. Emma and Zoya then dive into her reporting in Grist, and how Samoa and its residents, as well as its physicians, have been on the forefront of climate-related illness, both experiencing it and treating it, and, in Zoya's estimation, it'd be a mistake for medical practitioners to not try and emulate early treatment methods that Samoan doctors are developing. Emma asks Zoya what she thinks are some heat and climate-related illnesses may become more and more prominent as extreme weather events begin to become more and more common. Emma asks how some of these climate-related illnesses, like fungal-based illnesses or illnesses like dengue fever, are able to migrate when they may have been previously unable to, and how lower-income areas with less supported water and sanitation infrastructure can be even more adversely affected by this disease migration. They end the conversation by touching on Zoya's most recent piece, about the heat-related illnesses found in people in Phoenix, Arizona, after 31 straight days of over 110 degree heat. Zoya, trying to stem the tide of doomerism, ultimately does qualify that there have been serious and encouraging medical breakthroughs to help mitigate these issues (whew!).

And in the Fun Half,  Emma is joined by Brandon and Binder as they break down Michael Knowles hawking an abortion reversal pill, Fox News highlighting a Mom on TikTok...bemoaning American capitalism??, Matt Walsh complains that people care more about the fate of hummingbirds than the fate of white people, and Twitter flack Linda Yaccarino tries to claim that X (??) is even safer than it was a year ago (Binder, you'd be surprised, doesn't agree with this!). Plus, your calls & IM's!

It's Hump Day! Sam and Emma speak with Moe Tkacik, investigations editor at The American Prospect, to discuss her recent suite of pieces in this month's issue on the U.S. healthcare system. Then, they're joined by Nicole Cyrille, member of the SAG-AFTRA negotiating committee, to discuss the recent developments in the strike and what to expect going forward. Sam and Emma start off the show by reacting to the big victory in Ohio surrounding Issue 1, the ballot measure that Ohio Republicans were attempting to utilize to make it harder for Ohioans to codify abortion rights into the state Constitution in the fall. Ohio Secretary of State Frank LaRose spoke with Steve Doocy on Fox & Friends this morning, to make clear that actually, it's totally fine that his side lost by millions of votes! Then, they're joined by Moe to discuss her astounding amount of reporting in this month's issue of The American Prospect about the U.S. healthcare system, and its frankly near-criminal origins. Moe traces back how the healthcare industry as we know it, dating back to the 1960's, was essentially created by crooks, leading to the essential codification of healthcare law that is rarely ever enforced, and which essentially benefits a sprawling network of middlemen at the expense of actual patients. The structure of this policy Moe claims, ultimately leads to adverse outcomes: making patients sicker then healthier, while a smaller group of individuals become richer and richer. Moe also traces some of the history of the American Medical Association (AMA), the standard for healthcare administration prior to the 1960's, as well as an organization characterized in opposition to socialized medicine. Moe then tells the story of United Healthcare, one of the premier organizations that characterized and revolutionized the inequitable structure of U.S. healthcare through the advert of HMO's, or health maintenance organizations, and how, through their financing structure, HMO's make it extremely difficult for medical professionals to maintain a successful practice via lowballing them, while also making pains to only offer coverage for necessary care. Sam, Emma, and Moe, discuss how United Healthcare and the HMO model is essentially a vertical integration model, and how that model spread from United Healthcare to other aspects of the industry, like drug pricing. Moe enlightens Sam and Emma on the weird tale of Pharma Bro Martin Shkreli actually *taking on* price gougers of a certain drug before he got into his own troubles doing some price gouging of his own. Moe also breaks down pharmacy benefit managers (PBM's), the distributors of pharmaceuticals and their presence within the supplying of drugs to pharmacies and customers, and the inherently corrupt bargain that legitimizes them in the healthcare supply chain. Moe finally breaks down some potential solutions to the inherent corruption, grift, and mismanagement within the U.S. healthcare system, including a more robust enforcement of Medicare fraud laws.

Then, they're joined by Nicole to discuss some updates on day 26 of the SAG-AFTRA strike and Day 100 of the WGA strike. Nicole gives a brief rundown on the main issues for SAG-AFTRA in their labor action(being treated with dignity and respect by streamers, corporate executives, and producers, raising minimum wages in a new agreement so actors can qualify for healthcare.) Nicole breaks down the discrepancies between linear network TV and the streaming model that has taken over, with syndication benefits no longer applying to shows on streaming, an enormous sea change in the industry that is ultimately penalizing creators while the people behind streaming platforms get more rich of the backs of those same creators. Nicole elucidates how there has still been no clarity on the metrics behind the success and failures of shows on streaming, which gives them leverage to not have to give in to any demands to the creators because there's no mutual frame of reference. This, as Nicole explains, the companies hire analytics companies like Parrot, so that they have this information while the creators themselves aren't permitted access to that data. Sam asks Nicole if he thinks there's a potential to any cleaving between the wants and needs of a subscription model for a business like Netflix compared to a business like Amazon, something Nicole says, while she can't confirm this, is hard to fathom because 1. They're beholden to their shareholders and 2. They don't have to adhere specifically to a fall schedule like producers did under the linear model. Nicole offers her perspective as a member of the disabled community in show business, an audio description narrator, and how both of those groups are even further marginalized by the inequities inherent within why SAG-AFTRA is striking for better conditions. They then touch on "interim agreements" and what they entail, as well as the AMPTP trying to strike a wedge between the WGA and SAG-AFTRA (unsuccessfully) before Nicole jumps off.

And in the Fun Half: Sam and Emma dive into the absolute messaging flop carried out by Ohio Republicans on Issue 1, and how seemingly no one has learned their lessons as to what is salient for voters when it comes to trans issues and abortion rights. They then discuss a great story of workers with the Houston-based organization Food Not Bombs being let off on charges of...feeding the homeless in public..., before getting into the ever-deepening hole that Steven Crowder keeps digging for himself because he can't stop defending exposing himself to his employees (allegedly!) They then finally check in on Donald Trump, sweaty and nasty as ever, reveling in his groupies in New Hampshire. Plus, your calls & IM's!

It's News Day Tuesday! But first, Sam and Emma speak with writer and conflict analyst Hannah Rae Armstrong to discuss the developments in the conflict in Niger. First, Sam and Emma check in on Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, doing some retail politics in Kentucky and getting mercilessly booed and heckled for his troubles. Then, they're joined by Hannah, in a dispatch from where she's located in Dakar, Senegal, to give some context to the burbling conflict in Niger, and the history of the Sahel region where the country is located, one that has been defined by coups recently. Hannah mentions that, given the turbulence in the Sahel countries of Niger, Burkina Faso, & Mali, it's been known as the "Coup Corridor" in Africa. Emma probes on why, in Niger, per Hannah, the leadership under Nigerien President Bazoum was mostly democratically elected in name only. Hannah then breaks down some of the electoral history in Niger prior to Bazoum, and the military action that was taken to depose Bazoum and who seized from him. Sam asks Hannah about the colonial and resource-based interests within the country and if that factors in at all to the regional turbulence, an influence (in this case, from the French) that Hannah concedes is slightly overblown at this point. They then touch upon the regional influence that the Russian mercenary Wagner Group have in the area, with Wagner leader Prigozhin going so far as to congratulate military leaders on the coup of President Bazoum, and if that had any influences on the conflict, and if there's any chance of a proxy war in the region given some of these outside foreign influences. They then discuss the inevitable American influence on this conflict, and how, as with many global destabilization efforts, military leaders and members had been trained and matriculated in the U.S., and whether the U.S. support for President Bazoum is sincere. Hannah tells Sam and Emma what might be next for Niger the country and the Sahel region going forward before she jumps off. Afterwards, Sam touches on Lee Harris's reporting in The American Prospect about Biden's Labor Department being set to issue a ruling on the Davis-Bacon Act, a ruling that could raise the salaries of some of the lowest-paid workers on infrastructure projects.

And in the Fun Half, Sam and Emma check in on Ron DeSantis bravely monologuing to NBC for 2 minutes before conceding that Donald Trump lost the 2020 election, as well as former Trump Press Secretary Kayleigh McEnany potentially...admitting she watched private testimony from Hunter Biden's business associate Devon Archer last week. They then touch on an inscrutable point Greg Gutfeld tried to make about "mobs", then zero in on RFK's...seemingly thin healthcare policy that he outlined on milquetoast podcaster Jimmy Dore's show yesterday. Plus, your calls & IM's!

Happy Monday! Sam and Emma speak with Micha Frazer-Carroll, columnist at The Independent, to discuss her recent book Mad World: The Politics of Mental Health. First, Sam and Emma touch on Trump attorney John Lauro, who made the rounds on the Sunday shows yesterday, and specifically the strategy that he and Trump are attempting to cast doubt on holding the January 6th trial in D.C., and moving it to the..."diverse" location of...West Virginia. Then, they're joined by Micha and get started by discussing Micha's journey and struggle with her own mental health, and how those experiences shaped her reporting and scholarship that went into "Mad World." She then discusses some of the history behind how mental health issues and other characteristics of people's gender & sexuality, their marital status, among other things were traced as pathologies for people's mental state in a way to categorize and stigmatize them, as opposed to identifiers and signifiers of someone's emotional and mental state that were simply lived experiences within the context of their personal lives. Micha, Sam and Emma also discuss how the idea of "stress" and the struggle with mental health within society, especially under global capitalism, is extremely individualized, as opposed to an idea of approaching stress as something systematized and baked into the trappings of labor, incarceration, homophobia, and other issues within and without the workplace. They discuss the history of asylums within the UK and how that, and how "mad" people or people suffering from "madness", paralleled that of how mentally ill people were treated in the U.S. as well. Emma brings up this idea of mental health "awareness" and how awareness of the vitality of mental healthcare has been completely saturated without any tangible approach to actual policy that would mitigate the structures and circumstances that exacerbate people's mental health struggles, the ones that require that so-called "awareness".

And in the Fun Half, Sam and Emma discuss Israel's National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir's recent comments about military action against Palestinians, something Sam referred to as "Praise-To-Slay", before diving into Steven Crowder's advertisement (featuring the Majority Report!) promoting a great" Re-Platforming" that's coming up tomorrow. They then discuss striking LA hotel workers outside the Fairmont Miramont getting forcibly dispersed by LAPD officers and hotel security basically masquerading as Pinkertons deputized by police. They also touch on some of Universal Studios' hardball against WGA and SAG-AFTRA picketers by, as Adam Conover, outlines, literally uprooting the sidewalk the picketers are attempting to walk on. They then turn to Ron DeSantis desperately trying to get Iowans to care about him seeing a guy in San Francisco shitting on the street, then touch on a huge appeals court decision in Mississippi turning over a Jim Crow-era voting law. Plus, your IM's!

It's Hump Day! Sam speaks with attorney Matthew Butterick about a lawsuit he's involved with representing artists against OpenAI, the company behind ChatGPT. Then, he's joined by political reporter Cameron Joseph to discuss the upcoming referendum in Ohio, entitled Issue 1, regarding ballot measures in the state. First, Sam runs through updates on Donald Trump’s various legal woes, WGA-Studio talks, Flint’s new natal care plan, the Fed’s continuing war on labor, SCOTUS record low public approval, and Russian bombing of Ukrainian grain stores, before parsing through the recent, massive indictment of Donald Trump of multiple charges of conspiracy and obstruction. Matthew Butterick then joins, diving right into his work with various acclaimed authors taking on the unauthorized use of their work across various AI engines, which, in fact, entirely rely on pre-existing and often-copyrighted works for their primary inputs, not to mention producing infringing derivative works with its outputs. After diving a little deeper into how this case centers on copyright infringement, and how it applies to other forms of AI (e.g. art and music), they wrap up by tackling the shape of the case as a class-action suit, and what the next steps are in this battle. Cameron Joseph then walks Sam through Ohio’s various upcoming referendums, first looking to the referendum to enshrine abortion rights in the State Constitutions that is scheduled for November, and tackling the long organizing process that took it to get there, before touching on the legislature-expedited response by Gov DeWine’s Secretary of State to launch an earlier referendum (scheduled for August) that makes it vastly more difficult to pass a constitutional referendum. After tackling the state of Ohio politics that led to these respective referenda, and why, the anti-referendum referendum seems poised to fail, they wrap up by looking to the ongoing political debacles in Wisconsin as liberals begin to take power and abuse the tools set up by the previous conservatives in their place.

And in the Fun Half: Sam is joined by Sean Fitzgerald AKA Actual Justice Warrior as they debate all things crime, walking through the impact of the George Floyd protests and the COVID-19 Pandemic on retirement rates, police funding, and overall crime rates. Plus, your calls and IMs!

It's News Day Tuesday! Sam and Emma break down the biggest headlines of the day. First, Sam and Emma run through updates on 2024 Presidential polling, Hunter Biden’s newest nothing allegations, Donald Trump’s various legal woes, LA’s hotel strike, Oklahoma public education policy, Phoenix’s destructive heatwave, and the Biden administration’s Student Debt plan 2.0. Next, they watch Bryan Cranston and Ilana Glazer tackle the ridiculous inhumanity of the studio executives amidst both the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes, before diving a little deeper into public opinion on Joe Biden heading into the final 12 months of the election cycle, and why Biden’s failure to pass much of his agenda with Build Back Better might come back to haunt him. They also dive deeper into the details of Biden’s brand-new Student Loan relief program, the non-revelations around Hunter Biden, and correct the record on the Lab Leak discussion with Ryan Grim.

And in the Fun Half: Sam and Emma tackle the conservative obsession with identity politics, as Vivek Ramaswamy dances around the existence of institutional racism and Malika from Raleigh tackles the genuine violence in pushing progress for marginalized people aside. Sam and Emma also discuss RFK ramping up his zionist rhetoric, and Soren from Minneapolis parses through another anti-trans grift attempt in the world of sports, plus, your calls and IMs!
