The Majority Report with Sam Seder

Sam and Emma host David Wengrow, Professor of Comparative Archaeology at University College London, to discuss his recent book The Dawn of Everything: A New History of Humanity that he co-authored with David Graeber. They begin by clarifying what the old history was, which Professor Wengrow describes the “broad sweep of human history” that we see starting all the way back in the Enlightenment, with Hobbes and Rousseau theorizing on the “state of nature” which was the origin of all humanity, and how the nature of inequality in civilization developed from there. He discusses how deep these theories, which were simply parables for their own time, have ingrained themselves into historical perspectives, structuring them into a constantly linear mold, and why the discussion of the “origin” of social concepts inherently implies this model. Emma, Sam, and he briefly touch on the massive impact of indigenous philosophies on French Enlightenment thinking, and how European elites worked to undermine this inspiration, making out their views of social and wealth equality to be a “romanticization,” and, in fact, a reflection of being on a lower tier of civilized society. Next, Professor Wengrow is able to dive into the narrative of the book, looking as far back as possible with cohesive archeological and anthropological evidence for social organization, and how we see - rather than a line from basic, equal, and free, to complex, stratified, and structured civilization - examples of societies that are experimental and fluid, changing political, religious, and legal systems as they migrate and the seasons shift their needs. After giving brief overviews of these examples, Sam, Emma, and David wrap up the interview by diving into the question of “how we got stuck” in a cycle of reinforcing and naturalizing the existence of inequality, debt, and other elements of our society. Sam and Emma also cover some updates on the Omicron variant, and the contrast with that and Biden’s consistently noncommittal responses to COVID.

And in the Fun Half: Nomiki joins Sam and Emma as they cover her bout with Dan Bongino, Dana Loesch’s fable of Bongo the gorilla’s righteous segregation hyenas, and discuss Omicron. Lara Logan compares Fauci to Mengele in Fox’s conspiracy zone, the crew covers Chris Cuomo’s conflict of interest, and what the fallout will be, if there is any. Enes Kanter reminds Americans to appreciate their freedom… by not exercising it, plus, your IMs!

Sam and Emma catch up on the big Thanksgiving weekend's worth of news! They begin by looking forwards, running through what we might see in the upcoming Senate session, before Sam reflects on the anniversary of Mike Cernovich’s attempted canceling of him (also known as Sam’s birthday). Next, they move onto the state of the GOP after Lauren Boebert’s increasingly Islamophobic statements about Ilhan Omar saw an absence of blowback from both sides, and cover Tulsi’s sharp shift to the right as she discusses the Ahmaud Arbery case as proof of a lack of racism in the US. They wrap it up by covering the Omicron variant, the necessary steps Biden should take versus the ones he will, and how his press-release presidency has proved increasingly useless in the eyes of the American public, which they emphasize with a discussion of his Build Back Better plan and the obstruction of the Senate Parliamentarian, who was hired by his own party. They also touch on some special and not-so-special guests for the upcoming MR live show.

And in the Fun Half: David from South Africa discusses global sanctions on his nation, and the absurdity of punishing a nation for having the proper infrastructure to discover new variants – which the US does not – and how this works with the Donald Trump “if we don’t test, there won’t be any issues” argument, as highlighted with a Jeanine Pirro guest. Alexis calls in from the non-ceded Spokane nation on recent fascist platforming going on in the area, including at the comedy club where she worked, and the MR team explores the incredible boost from the third shot, and Nick Fletcher whines to British parliament about being a man. Roy from the Country calls in to discuss the problematic connections between judges and landlords, and Eyo calls in to tackle some hard issues in the current civil war between Tigray and Ethiopia, before Sam and Emma explore the spirit of Thanksgiving coming together with the Dave Rubin Jimmy Dore reconnection, plus, your calls and IMs!

Sam sits down with historian Christopher W. Shaw, to discuss his recent book First Class: The U.S. Postal Service, Democracy, and the Corporate Threat, on the rise of one of the most popular public services, and its precarious state in an era of privatization. They begin in the 18th century, with the beginnings of the postal system as a tool for patriot communication and military strategy, before it was picked up by the US government under George Washington, pivoting to the duty of transporting mail and, more importantly, news and newspapers, seen as a key element in linking and informing the population. The service spent the next century continuing to ingrain itself in the daily lives of Americans, regardless of economic success, with an 1851 law officially stating that deficit should not come into play with postal expansion, and following policies to continue to drive down the price of postage, including reduced pricing on paperback literature and the Rural Free Delivery (RFD) service. Working through the early-20th century, the postal service was seen as the role of the American government, until FDR’s social policy expanded on that greatly, and then two world wars saw the US take on an international-military role, greatly expanding the role of its legislative and executive branches. This brings Shaw and Sam to the mid-1900s, and a pivot towards privatization with neoconservatism and neoliberalism taking hold of US politics – they explore how the impact of a shift from railway to highway infrastructure and the 1971 shift to self-funding through postage that created the USPS as we know it, before they look at the influence of Reaganomics and how the postal service was seen as a key arena in the goals of privatization. After touching on the developments in the service over the last couple of decades, Christopher and Sam dive into the current state of the USPS in the wake of the Trump administration and a massive shift in the importance of mail-in voting. They wrap up the interview by looking at the development of postal banking, and discussing what types of expansion the postal service could and should employ moving forwards.

Emma hosts Ursula Hackett, Senior Lecturer in Politics at Royal Holloway University of London, to discuss her recent book America's Voucher Politics: How Elites Learned to Hide The State. Emma starts the show by touching upon the seemingly endless Chris Christie Redemption Tour that ends with Laura Ingraham grilling him as to whether he'll fall in line when Trump inevitably runs in 2024. Then Emma starts out her conversation with Ursula by discussing the early history of school vouchers, and how since 2010 the concerted effort by the far-right, both politically and judicially, sped up the prevalence of them in the United States significantly. They then touch on how this phenomenon is uniquely American, and that historically voucher programs started before the Brown v. Board of Ed decision, but continued as a concerted effort to block de-segregation efforts through privatizing education. Ursula speaks to the idea of "attenuated governance" and the "submerged state", where social spending gets diluted through privatizing, and where a citizenry doesn't attribute policy prescriptions and benefits to the people who actually enacted them because they're so obscured in bureaucracy and red tape, something that Emma sees as a real failure of Congressional Democrats and Dems in general. They then touch on some of former Education Secretary Betsy DeVos's policies like her failed attempt to install educations savings accounts in her home state of Michigan, and then end on the importance of the coordinated effort, that being one of many, of the right to sideline and demonize teacher's unions in favor of "school choice" and privatization.

Emma then discusses Kyle Rittenhouse talking out of two sides of his mouth regarding the politicizing of his fateful (and fatal) night in Kenosha Wisconsin before being joined by Nomiki! They tackled Steven Crowders scorching take that American slavery had nothing to do with race (the 3/5ths Compromise would like a word...), Josh Hawley's cringey podcast about the Bible's take on men where he definitely lets his wife speak (she was silent the entire clip), and the Peng Shuai situation in China and how CNN is being censored on Chinese airwaves from even covering it. Plus, your calls and IM's!

Sam hosts William A. Blair, Professor of Middle American History at Penn State University, to discuss his recent book The Record of Murders and Outrages: Racial Violence and the Fight Over Truth at the Dawn of Reconstruction, on how the true histories of reconstruction, both in the horrible violence and influential policy, has been obscured by a white supremacist “redemption narrative”. They begin by discussing the historical study of the reconstruction era, and the influence of the Dunning School on manipulating the narrative, as Professor Blair walks through the influence of William A. Dunning’s thoughts on a group of historians that did state by state studies of reconstruction, finding it overwhelmingly as a time of little accomplishment, while downplaying and normalizing the presence of racial violence. Next, Professor Blair contextualizes the Dunning School’s development in the 1920s with an overwhelming turn towards professionalized history within a moment dominated by mainstream racist pseudoscience, before he and Sam dive into the professor’s study of contemporary sources of the time, looking first at the Freeman’s Bureau, the first national welfare agency which worked to bolster freed Black American’s transition into society, alongside keeping “the record of murders and outrages,” which tracked the overwhelming racial violence against Black folks in the South. Introducing the data officially in 1867 with the Reconstruction Acts, William and Sam explore how Congressional Republicans used the bureau as an investigative arm to surveil the state of the South’s reconstruction, particularly focusing on the issue of violent voter suppression, which began to boil over after these acts, with the Ku Klux Klan’s influence and violence reaching their first peak in 1868. Next, they move into the violence that took place at the time, parsing through the coverage of both more notorious massacres, like those in Memphis and New Orleans in 1866, and the myriad unknown and hardly-reported massacres throughout the rest of the south, all of which contributed to overwhelming voter suppression, and touch on the harrowing historical impossibility of genuinely tracing and acknowledging the trauma that took place. They also cover the ideological organizing of the southern Democrats, from Charles Blackford’s letter for the 1889 local elections and the emphasis on not deserting the polls, like some deserted the Confederacy, to Birth of a Nation in the early 1900s. Lastly, Professor Blair and Sam explore how narrative spinning begins immediately in the aftermath of massive issues with an ideological split, with Edward Pollard’s “Lost Cause” being published in 1866, and the Dunning School following quickly. Sam also covers the wake of the Rittenhouse decision, contrasting it with the coverage of the Ahmaud Arbery case, in which the defendant cited lynchings, not to refer to the racist murder, but the treatment of the murderers.

And in the Fun Half: Sam and the MR crew cover the Daily Wire’s discussion on the Rittenhouse decision, and Candace Owen’s putting discussing her “vengeance for Kyle,” in a segment that should’ve been produced by Monster Energy, John from San Antonio calls in to discuss the Freedom to Vote act and helps clarify the tally on the swings in Congressional seats, Pat from Nebraska chats the hypocrisy of gun nuts, and Aaron from CA tries to do inflation for houses, forgetting that, just like there’s always open jobs that don’t offer enough, there are always open houses that simply are used for wealth hoarding. They also cover Seb Gorka and Kid Rock both choosing incredibly embarrassing ways to return to the spotlight, Tucker Carlson and Chuck Todd blank on questioning their interview subjects, and Senator Kennedy asks Saule Omarova to renounce her middle school, plus, your calls and IMs!

Sam hosts Jamelle Bouie, opinion columnist at the New York Times and co-host of the Unclear and Present Danger podcast, to wrap up the week in news! And in the second half, Sam is joined by Jamie Peck, in her triumphant return to MR (!) and Jorge Rocha, co-hosts of the Everybody Loves Communism podcast! Jamelle starts off with a dive into his new 90’s political-military thrillers podcast, before he and Sam get into the state of the Build Back Better bill, as it passes a House vote after a late night, in which Kevin McCarthy showed us why talking filibusters, while they force us to hear from some of the worst people, is drastically better than invoking cloture. Next, they get into the content of the bill, walking through the expansion in SALT deductions as an annoyingly large part of the $1.75 trillion package, as well as looking at the state of the Manchin and Sinema votes, and whether Democratic leadership successfully got rid of everything they didn’t want, and included everything they did want. They also discuss the impact the passing of the bill is already having on the approval of the Democrats (other than Biden), and what this means heading into a midterm in which the GOP, simply by nature of re-gerrymandering borders, have picked up at least five very necessary seats. They wrap up the interview by touching on Bouie’s recent piece for the NYT on structural racism, its relationship to capitalism’s reliance on inequality, and what it would mean for remnants of racism in a truly restructured and redistributed society. Then, Jamie and Jorge hop on to discuss a variety of important audio projects they’re working on, before getting into the state of the US’s Democratic Socialist movement, and why, in the wake of the incredible leftist and abolitionist organizing that we saw with the George Floyd uprisings and COVID pandemic, the DSA has an essential task of taking a look outside of explicitly electoral organizing. Sam also covers John Kennedy misunderstanding comrade as a term of endearment in his fear-mongering during Saule Omarova’s confirmation hearing.

And in the Fun Half: After breaking down the announcement of the Rittenhouse decision, and the hypocrisy of the right screaming about being silenced when called racist, but being fully behind the murder of protesters. Next, Sam and the MR crew cover Kevin McCarthy’s campaign to keep his house leadership position, centering the important issues of God and fentanyl in his country, Jordan Pederson reminds us that if you don’t acknowledge structures, then no problem can structural, and Ben Shapiro says propaganda can’t be animated. A Denver journalist takes on the incredibly low standards for Lauren Boebert, plus, your IMs!

Emma hosts journalist Sam Quinones, to discuss his recent book The Least of Us: True Tales of America and Hope in the Time of Fentanyl and Meth, taking on the wave of synthetic drugs moving across North America over the last decade and a half, how they seeped through, and why they are so dangerous. They begin by jumping off of Quinones work “Dreamland” which helped build a lot of the language around the opioid epidemic that we use today, as they reflect on the promulgation of opioids through the pharmaceutical industry pressuring doctors to begin prescribing narcotic painkillers, like Vicodin and Oxycontin, and how it contributed to a wave of opioids seeping into the black market. This brings them to the takeover of synthetics in the drug trafficking world, which offered a variety of new benefits in comparison to the plant-based drugs, like marijuana and poppies, including uniformity, no requirement for land or agricultural workers, and no seasonal-dependent growth. This opened up the role of kingpin to anyone who can get their hands on the chemicals, as Quinones describes through a couple of stories on the earliest independent fentanyl-traffickers coming in from China and Mexico, after its birth in the US, seeing an already misused drug fall into the hands of non-medical-professionals as they act the role of the mixer, combining drugs with drugs to capitalize on addictive capacities. Lastly, they cover the major changes that moving to synthetics has had on the actual effects of the drug usage, with meth, particularly, featuring an entirely new base, P2P, that, much like fentanyl’s massive potency, has produced much more severe drawbacks, including paranoia, before they briefly touch on what solutions are currently being presented by the US, and how that is, problematically, centered around incarceration. Emma also touches on the CBO scores coming back, to Manchin’s chagrin, and the upcoming Julius Jones case and the morbid contradiction of killing in the name of justice.

And in the Fun Half: Emma, Matt, and Brandon take on the GOP’s most batshit violent characters, addressing Gosar’s anime campaign video, and Boebert’s violent defecation on the House floor, alongside AOC’s killer speech on GOP nihilism to avoid accountability. They also touch on Havana Syndrome, ooh na-na, the Lakers new home at the biggest tribute to pyramid schemes since Giza, and the commuting of Julius Jones’ sentence, before also touching on whether Queen Elizabeth II will emerge early to signal six more weeks of monarchical rule, Matt Walsh talks kids, birds, and sex, like the weird guy he is, and Andy from NYC calls in about Joe Rogan’s politics and the value of his show. Phillip from StL also shines a light on Aaron Rodgers’ chiropractic upbringing, and child trafficking issues in the midwest, plus, your calls and IMs!

Sam and Emma host Dave Goulson, professor of biology at the University of Sussex, to discuss his recent book Silent Earth: Averting the Insect Apocalypse, on the rampant decline of insect populations worldwide over the last few decades, and how the trend continuing could completely alter our relationships to crops and practically all plant life. Professor Goulson dives into the essential niches that insects fill, from their role as pollinators to being bio-control agents and recyclers of all sorts of life, as well as the ties between climate change and the insect apocalypse, both in terms of the issues that create them, and in how they reinforce each other. Next, he, Emma, and Sam discuss how this trend towards extinction is hitting the pollinating insects we appreciate (butterflies, bees) while the pest-like ones (mosquitoes, houseflies) have been able to adapt and thrive in human habitation, before they get into the effects we’ve seen, and what the future of this trend could look like, from hand-pollination to massive food scarcity. They also touch on the biggest drivers of insect extinction, with habitat loss at the top of the list, alongside insecticide, changing climates, even light pollution, and Professor Goulson reminds us of the ease with which this could be reversed, both on a structural and individual level. Sam and Emma also dive into the continued fear-mongering around inflation and the deficit when it comes to infrastructure, while we’re about to pass a $780 billion defense budget and remind us of the dangers of nonstick pans as PFOS are revealed to be even more toxic than we thought.

And in the Fun Half: Bro Flamingo calls in to discuss accountability and punishment, especially when it comes to the Rittenhouse case, Sam clarifies his position on being a socialist (he doesn’t have one), and the crew comes up with a perfect solution to Alec from Minneapolis trying to shift his parents away from cable news: the Majority Report. Mehdi Hasan goes after Brad Raffensperger, forcing the issue of supporting Trump to the fore, Chris Christie gets shamed by Nicolle Wallace for criticizing MSNBC and CNN while letting Fox run wild, before he also births the discussion of the Mount Rushmore of Trump-Cucks. Ronald Raygun corrects the record on what’s wrong with Sam, Candace Owens presents a platform of Stolen Valor, and Jeremy from TX talks doomsday prep culture, plus, your calls and IMs!

Sam and Emma break down what's to come in the week in news, from the reconciliation negotiations on the Hill, to updates on labor, the courts, and climate. They begin by covering the religious reaction to Universal Pre-K’s non-discrimination requirement, and the news that September was a record-breaking month in terms of workers quitting jobs that simply did not appreciate their labor. They move forward to take on the upcoming Build Back Better bill, hopefully, to be signed in the coming days, and look through the new and old money piled into the investment in our public infrastructure, parsing through the policies around upgrading our electricity grid, interstate rails, broadband, climate resiliency, and “expanding transportation projects,” as well as getting into the incredible vagueness of those last two elements. Next, they look at the recent NYT report on a 2019 bombing in Syria in which the US massacred upwards of 80 women and children, before frantically working over the past two years to cover it up, as an Air Force lawyer unsuccessfully sought higher and higher backing for the necessary investigation. Sam and Emma look at the type of reporting that is relevant to this story, as well as what kind of reaction could be seen in the House and the Senate, and dive into the recent leak that surprised nobody, confirming that the Trump administration did, indeed, seek to undermine their own CDC as they attempted to manage their image in the run-up to the election.

And in the Fun Half: Nomiki joins Sam and Emma as they discuss lead poisoning in US infrastructure, particularly in NYC, before Matty from Oregon calls in with one of the most interesting calls of the year, exploring his upbringing under a Right-Wing talk show host and how he and his siblings worked out of the shadows after leaving home. Laura Ingraham struggles to remember when her vaccine fear-mongering covered measles, and the MR crew discusses the insane stupidity of the Right’s “coded language” from “Let’s go Brandon” to Dick Morris having the gall to make fun of the genitalia in Pete Buttigieg’s name. Manuel from the Dominican Republic also touches on the severe abuses of Haitian people in the DR’s turn to the Right, plus, your calls and IMs!

Sam and Emma host Michael Brenes, history lecturer at Yale University, to discuss his recent book For Might and Right: Cold War Defense Spending and the Remaking of American Democracy, on how the Cold War helped to ingrain the military-industrial complex within the American political, economic, and labor sectors. Michael takes Emma and Sam back to the forties, in the wake of WWII, as the US shifted its focus to the USSR’s threat to US imperial interests, with the unification of liberals in the government around the idea that the US military must be broadened, even while conservatives were wary of a garrison state. They also dive into how the Cold War saw the defense budget cemented as a new form of welfare state, far from the New Deal, serving to generate unionized, stable jobs, with legislation from the GI bill to full racial integration in the military presenting the sector as the leader of social progress. Next, they look at Eisenhower’s presidency, as, despite being a key figure in identifying the military-industrial complex, he allowed defense funding to flourish in a time of austerity, with the holes in the military-welfare state becoming more and more glaring as the actual welfare state is rolled back under the second red scare. Over the next two decades, the US sees a declining faith in the military-industrial complex as it becomes clear that the fight for jobs in the sector is both a zero-sum game, and becoming increasingly concentrated in specific, higher-educated fields. Then, they dive into the 80s and 90s, as the sudden disappearance of the USSR left a gaping hole for excuses for the Pentagon budget, until a conversation around reassessing the connection between defense and the economy is interrupted with a presidential impeachment trial, putting US politics into a drama-driven state, with 9/11 then putting US defense back into the money seat, even on the domestic scale, with the militarization of police increasing rapidly into the aughts with the wars on drugs and crime. They wrap up the interview by touching on the last couple of decades, and how the war on terror has both seen the biggest uptick in total defense spending, and a return of the discussion around an international, completely autonomous US military and its failures. They also look at how the defense industry exacerbates income inequality, and what we can do to begin to shift jobs during a period of peace to civilian, peacetime purposes. Emma and Sam also discuss Sen. Barrasso extending empathy and understanding to Jan 6 insurrectionists’ “hang Mike Pence” chants.

And in the Fun Half: Emma and Sam cover the general failings of COP26, looking at AOC’s recent comments about the US “[recovering] our moral authority,” before John from SA calls in to debate the importance of negative partisanship, and the MR crew covers the Republicans that voted for BIF almost immediately announcing their retirement. Tulsi visits Fox as Sean Hannity flirts with her imperialist and fiscally conservative tendencies, Dave from Jamaica discusses vaccine hesitancy versus anti-vaccination propaganda, and Cole James Cash shares good news, bad news, and great news. Jared from Portland discusses avoiding painting our children a nihilist picture of the future, plus, your calls and IMs!

It's Casual Friday! Sam and Emma host Heather Digby Parton, contributing writer at Salon and proprietor of the Hullaballoo blog. Digby, Sam, and Emma jump right into recent news surrounding the January 6th committee, as the infrastructure and reconciliation fights fade into the background. They begin with former Chief of Staff Mark Meadows ignoring his subpoena for criminal contempt of congress, before getting into the recent Trump audio leak regarding “common sense” regard for Pence by the insurrectionists, and the hope that Democrats will finally capitalize on something in the public eye with these hearings, as well as the likelihood that they won’t, especially with Pelosi’s desire to maintain a “strong” Republican party. Next, they jump to the corporatist Dems pushing the “inflation is the new deficit” idea, all while they continue to reject any helpful provisions in reconciliation, and cover whether Biden and Co. will actually put any leverage on Manchin or if they’re still shilling for a right-wing that will never respect them. Lastly, they touch on the continued supply line issues, and get into the Rittenhouse judge’s absurdly explicit political performance.

In the second half: Sam and Emma are joined by David Roth, co-owner of Defector and host of The Distraction podcast, to discuss his recent piece "I Will Create A Winning Basketball Program At The University Of Austin", and cover the education institution for a new age, sponsored by every libertarian contrarian that spends too much time on the internet, and how and why Bari Weiss has decided on creating a “university” as her next money-making initiative in her fight against the woke trinity of trans people, Black people, and Palestinians. And in the Fun Half: Emma and Sam dive into Kyle Rittenhouse’s judge taking time in the trial to test out his right-wing tight five with some supply line jokes, before looking deep into Jimmy Dore's mystery producer who either: A). Jimmy lets run wild in editing, or B). Jimmy encourages to manipulate information. Matt Lech has Stephen Jay Gould walk us through the history of Ben Shapiro’s bell curve nonsense, and the weird fact that IQ is somehow never important in homogenous societies. They also cover Youngkin’s 17-year old son trying to vote… twice, plus, your IMs!

Emma hosts Ryan Cooper, national correspondent for The Week, to discuss his recent piece "The Most Underrated Part of the Electric Revolution", on the connections between inflation and a green transition, and how making a shift away from gases and to electricity, especially in transportation, can be a solution to rising prices. Ryan and Emma start off with a lighthearted reflection on the recent CNN piece tracking the impact of inflation on a family of 12 that drinks a lot of milk, alongside the legitimate impact of supply chain bottlenecks. Ryan Cooper looks back to the 1970s at the last era of mass inflation in the US, and the massive difference between almost a decade of at least seven percent inflation, and a month of maybe six percent, before he and Emma shift towards the effect of inflation on debt, and the role creditors play in fear-mongering around rising prices. They look at the current state of household debt and wealth in the US, with both rates on the rise, and how the rising wealth has seen an increase in silly spending on immaterial things, from crypto and NFTs to stocks, while the rising prices with wage increase cut the real effect of the debt, thus we don’t see a massive negative impact of inflation on the wealthy, and we could see a positive impact for the largely in debt. Next, they shift into the meat of Cooper’s piece, looking at the role of gas prices within inflation as a whole as a much more volatile material in contrast with electricity, which can further be produced by homeowners themselves, taking on how big of an effect simply switching to Electric Vehicles could have, before they go into a more comprehensive response to this issue, looking at the effect of investing in public transportation and non-car infrastructure. Emma also covers the wildly lopsided relationship to punishment had by the judge currently presiding over the Rittenhouse double homicide case.

And in the Fun Half: Emma is joined by Matt and Brandon as they take on media literacy in the US and who’s to blame, as well the false bike-car dichotomy, Elaine Chao’s call for us as a country (by which she means you as a laborer) to take on more work. Dylan from StL reports on Matt Walsh’s upcoming attendance at a mandatory vax event, the crew discusses the impossibility of being pro-fascism abroad and then fighting fascism at home – as shown by Tulsi Gabbard – and take a victory lap on the Houston PD’s admission of using drug conspiracies to shirk security’s blame for the Astroworld tragedy. Bee from Queens thanks MR for their coverage on Prager’s absurd AIDS comp, and Matt from Wilmington NC hits on topics ranging from yesterday’s anniversary of the 1898 massacre in NC, to the incredible talent of Matt Lech and the perfect pairing of microdosing and baseball, plus, your calls and IMs!

Sam and Emma host Bart Elmore, Associate Professor of History at The Ohio State University, to discuss his recent book Seed Money: Monsanto's Past and Our Food Future, on the role Monsanto has played in shaping our agricultural production around the sale of chemicals, and chemicals to counteract those chemicals, all while promoting it as a food production revolution. They begin with the onset of both Professor Elmore’s study of Monsanto, and the seeds of the company itself, with John Queeny’s company serving as a chemical business alternative to the German pharmaceutical company Bayer, despite only really producing sweeteners and caffeine for the Coca Cola company, before his son Edgar takes the reins in the late 1920s and begins to broaden the company’s output to chemicals for soaps and plastics, with his eyes already set on agriculture and food production. Monsanto’s production throughout the next few decades centered on creating toxic compounds for dual purposes: the destruction of human life, and the destruction of unneeded plant, insect, and parasitic life. This resulted in the birth of a variety of new chemicals, starting with DDT and working up to 2,4,5-T, the central element of Agent Orange, in the 40s, as Professor Elmore walks through the effects of the production on the factory workers, who fell deathly ill, facing conditions including rampant chloracne, eventually taking a case against Monsanto in the ‘80s, which would lead to the company leveraging their workers’ own housing against them. Next, he brings Emma and Sam up to the neoliberal era, as Monsanto tried to work away from warfare and back towards agriculture, bringing about their Roundup product in the ‘70s, as it took off in the ‘80s after early EPA approval, a bolstering of the company by George H.W. Bush’s competitiveness council, and a cornering of the market when the company discovered an agrobacterium in the dump outside of their factories that was resistant to the Roundup herbicide. They finally jump into the actual shifting of agricultural industry that Monsanto caused, looking at their pushback of both research that countered the belief that their chemicals would not create resistant bacteria, and of farmers that “benefitted” from their product without purchasing it. Lastly, they cover the continuation of this corporate culture of environmental and agricultural destruction for profit as Professor Elmore dives into the recent production of dicamba and the lawsuits that are currently ongoing, even as Bayer, ironically, has undergone a takeover of the chemical company, all while research surfaces proving that Monsanto’s inventions had no significant impact on food yields. Sam and Emma also touch on the upcoming Starbuck unionization attempt and look back at this day in history in 1898, with the Wilmington, NC insurrection by white supremacists.

And in the Fun Half: The MR team take a call from the one and only Kowalski from Nebraska in the wake of the Monsanto interview, Marlon from LA calls in for some clarification on the two bills working through Congress, and Nancy Pelosi fittingly officiates the wedding of an Heiress to an Oil fortune alongside her appearance at COP 26. Terry Crews puts Amazon storage workers to shame as he proves you just have to be famous and insanely muscular to survive there, Shashank from NY discusses the roots of the term pariah, and Charlie Kirk calls today’s kids gay America haters, and, frankly, we’re honored, plus, your calls and IMs!

Sam and Emma host Daniel Nichanian, creator of What's On The Ballot, to break down the trends he saw from last Tuesday's elections, as well as some overlooked races and ballot measures. Moving beyond the top line races last week, such as the governor races in VA and NJ, Daniel walks Emma and Sam through referendums and smaller elections around key narratives, from the lasting effects of the War on Drugs, to America’s changing relationship with policing and criminal justice, and much more. They begin with the former, exploring how prosecutorial elections in Austin, Philly, and VA hinged on stepping back from going after drug possession charges, the legalization of Marijuana across Ohio, and Washington following in Oregon’s footsteps in decriminalizing drug possession. Next, they move to Kyrsten Sinema’s home state as they look at Tuscon voters giving a big ol’ thumbs up to a $15/hr minimum wage as the conversation shifts to how referendum can be used to build institutions and ideas that the legislative arena refuses to address. They also discuss votes around the funding and maintaining of the prison industrial complex, from Police budgets to the conditions of prisons, with Boston electing for participatory budgets, which have previously allowed Seattle to cut police funding, Austin voters wholeheartedly striking down a massive hike on their police budget, and a few Sheriff elections hinging on jail maintenance. They wrap up the interview by touching on election reform, noting specifically the failure of the NYS Democratic Party to boost their referendum, choosing instead to undermine India Walton’s candidacy as the winner of the Democratic primary for Mayor of Buffalo, before they look at the hinge of the Right’s culture war, discussing the lack of a red wave among school board elections countrywide. Emma and Sam also watch Pete Buttigieg’s astonishment at the Right not agreeing with his assessment of racism in infrastructure, and the MR team unpacks the legacy of segregation left behind by Robert Moses.

And in the Fun Half: Nomiki Konst helps Emma and Sam unpack the NYS referendum failures and how the state’s Democratic Party and its relationship (or lack thereof) with progressives were key. They also cover Peter Thiel’s “17-and-racist again” moment as he uses college protests from 25 years ago to explain why racism and misogyny are social constructs just like baseball. Tucker Carlson the charlatan weeds out all of the important historical facts from his segment on infrastructure, and Dennis Prager contrasts the stigmatization of unvaccinated with the lack of it with AIDS, just years after complaining about the DE-stigmatization of AIDS. Lastly, Axios gets hot and heavy with Josh Hawley, fantasizing about their ideal man, and Eric Bolling discusses the real way to get to Sesame Street – by following Marxist theory – plus, your IMs!

Sam and Emma host Will Stronge, co-director of research at the think tank Autonomy, to discuss his recent book Overtime: Why We Need A Shorter Working Week that he co-authored with Kyle Lewis. They start off by reflecting on the late night infrastructure bill passage from last Friday night, as well as Josh Gottheimer's mealy-mouth pledge to support the reconciliation package regardless of what the CBO score is. Then they dive into their conversation with Will, starting with an outline of the history of the 5-day work week in the U.S., specifically tracing the origins back to the administration of FDR. Will then gives some context as to how this movement towards a shorter working week has manifested in other countries, specifically in conjunction with union/labor power. Sam, Emma and Will then discuss why specifically a 4-day, 32-hour schedule is what's been floated mostly, and what problems specifically implementation of this policy can solve. Will, despite touting the policy as a "multi-dividend policy" with multi-dividend solutions, qualifies that the 4-day work week is no silver bullet, before outlining a study from Iceland that showed the policy having an immensely positive impact on the subjects, with more and more Icelandic citizens wanting to switch over to the 4-day plan after the study concluded. In the context of COP26, Sam, Emma, and Will also reflect on the positive environmental impacts the policy can have; despite seeming second-order before, they certainly seem to be a priority now. They end on discussing the gender gap, the idea of the "second shift" of unpaid labor for working mothers, optimal deployment/enforcement mechanisms for such a policy, whether it's completely out of reach for the U.S. to actually implement, and how COVID laid bare the inequities that "good work" and a better working schedule could mitigate if implemented.

And in the Fun Half, the MR crew discuss Greta Thunberg's scathing dressing down of COP26 at a protest outside the summit, and juxtapose that with "private citizen" Barack Obama joking that he has to sit in traffic to come to these now, but also, if it's any consolation, doesn't have to wear a tie anymore. They then take a look at YouTuber Shaun's surgical dissection of Jimmy Dore's anti-vax talking points, how he's been lying by manipulating sources to buttress those points, and that he's still taking cues from cranks like the "mRNA founder" Robert Malone. The crew also takes a look at some data showing that Trump counties are still more adversely affected by COVID, then take a look at a CNN piece on a family's struggle with inflation (the family has like 12 kids and is receiveid $2,700 from the government via the Child Tax Credit, but that's neither here nor there). And lastly, the MR Crew is ECSTATIC to report on the Intellectual Dark Web's newest boondoggle: The University of Austin!! (No, not that one.) Plus, your calls and IM's!

It's Casual Friday! Sam and Emma host Alex Pareene and Film Guy Matthew this casual Friday.

It's Casual Friday! Sam and Emma host Alex Pareene, contributing editor at The New Republic and author of the AP newsletter on Substack, to wrap up the week in news, and Film Guy Matthew joins in the fun half to go over his picks. Alex, Emma, and Sam dive right into the wake of this weeks elections, looking first at the particularities of the VA governorship, and McAuliffe’s failure not as a referendum against wokeness (whatever that means) but simply the party in power being punished for their inaction during hard times. They take on Tim Kaine’s insane in the membrane statement in which he calls out the “purist” demands of progressives alongside excusing McAuliffe’s role as a poor candidate due to “millions of reasons” for any loss. Next, they look back to the run-up to the election, exploring how the Democrats managed to fail both at tying Youngkin to Trump in the eyes of moderates, and at downplaying Trump’s ability to bolster turnout, before looking at the greater Democratic agenda coming into this November, from an inability to capitalize on the delegitimization of their opponents following 1/6, or on the legitimization of their own power in the wake of Biden’s covid relief bill success. Alex also leads a discussion on the Democratic leadership’s fetishization of bipartisanship and senatorial process amidst Republican cultural fear-mongering, before they take on how Democrats should handle culture war talking points, particularly around covid, in the lead-up to the midterms. Emma, Sam, and Alex wrap up the interview by looking at the current wave of labor strikes, the analogies we see with the culture war movement in VA, and how the Democrats can, and won’t, capitalize on this building spirit of labor organizing.

And in the Fun Half: Notorious film guy, Matthew Film Guy, joins Sam and Emma as he walks them through the legacy of Elaine May, and the beauty of her film “Mikey and Nicky” with Peter Falk and John Cassavetes, before giving some updates on his projects and laying out his recommendation for “Distant Voices, Still Lives.” Sam and Emma also cover Marco Rubio saying white supremacy has never accounted for Republican support, completely ignoring their entire blueprint from Nixon onwards, Sam calls for an apology from Tim Pool, plus, your IMs!

Emma hosts Margaret MacMillan, historian and professor at the University of Toronto, to discuss her recent book War: How Conflict Shaped Us.

Emma hosts Margaret MacMillan, historian and professor at the University of Toronto, to discuss her recent book, “War: How Conflict Shaped Us,” on how the ideologies of war have been central to how our societies have progressed. First, Professor MacMillan takes a step back, looking at how warfare works in tandem with organization, perhaps the most influential force in shaping the bureaucracies we see today, just as forces such as geography, climate, and economics do. Next, she and Emma take a historical perspective on warfare, exploring how the goals and values of different societies have seen different views and organizational tactics in warfare, and the massive shifts that have gone on in warfare amidst social change. They dive into the particular influence of three revolutions on how we relate to war, starting with the French and American revolutions establishing the role of citizenship, rather than hierarchy, in bolstering nationalism and the belief in everyone’s duty to fight for their country, before they look at how the Industrial Revolution created a massive shift in the industry ad technology of warfare in the west, bolstering their power as they shifted the world into the colonial era, and how these two revolutions developed alongside each other, with Napoleon as an interesting intersection between the two. This brings the discussion to the role of war as an industry, as Professor MacMillan and Emma explore the growth of the military-industrial complex in the 20th Century, and the consolidation of power into the hands of people seeking to build on this international exploitation, and discuss how an ingrained military system in society can have massive effects on social and cultural values. They wrap up the interview by touching on anti-war movements, how they’re built and inspired, and how we can see cultures make massive shifts from pro- to very anti-warfare (and vice versa) in just decades. Emma also covers VP Kamala Harris’ promotion of the democratic agenda – or lack thereof – in the lead up to McAuliffe’s loss as a perfect representation of the state of the party.

And in the Fun Half: Matt and Brandon join as Jeff Bezos announces his desire to “enhance nature” over making production and consumption sustainable, Emma and Matt reflect on the earlier interview’s non-negative characterization of certain wars, and the crew goes deep into Q and the inability to connect their conspiracies to the systems that promote them. They also cover Tim Pool calling Joe Rogan for some plumbing help with sponsoring his kitchen sink, Rob from NJ holds Emma accountable for stealing Stephen Crowder’s testosterone, and Benny Boy from Iowa starts an incredible conversation on indoctrination, conspiracy, and the effect of our political media. Plus, your calls and IMs!

Sam and Emma break down a big week in news as election results come in from Tuesday's big races in New Jersey and Virginia!

Sam and Emma break down a big week in news as election results come in from Tuesday's big races in New Jersey and Virginia, and across the nation. They begin with the Democratic disappointment in VA, and how party leadership is working to shift this loss onto the progressives, despite McAuliffe’s complete lack of progressive policies, also looking at the demographic shifts between 2020 and 2022, and how the focus on education and economy wound up bolstering the Republican CRT culture war. They also dive into the wins the Democratic establishment did see against progressives, looking at the massive financial movement behind Byron Brown’s win in Buffalo, and the mediocre Minneapolis proposition to amending the police department that appealed to neither abolitionists nor reformists. Next, they jump into referendums nationwide, exploring NY’s right to clean air and water proposition, St. Paul’s rent control success, and Tucson winning a $15 minimum wage, before touching on the failure of voting rights propositions in NY. Lastly, they look into the growing role of the Supreme Court, discussing what makes a landmark case different, why that makes Citizen’s United about much more than advertising, and why it could create massive repercussions for the Supreme Court’s non-delegation case. They also cover updates on Build Back Better’s drug pricing deal, Rahm Emmanuel’s federally-funded vacation finally being sunk, and the first intra-species transmission of covid.

And in the Fun Half: Adrian Martinez of the Costa Rican climate organization La Ruta del Clima joins from COP 26 to discuss the continued exclusion of the global south and its activists from the discussion around climate transformation and reciprocity, despite them largely being the recipients of the global north's climate “externalities” (disasters). Sam and Emma dive deeper into the masochism of today’s fun half by hypothesizing on the manner of transmission of covid from human to deer and looking at Steve Scalise’s statement on the Right’s climate plan, before things get a little lighter as they celebrate Emma's anniversary with MR, cover the overwhelming progressive wins in Worcester and Boston, MA, the likelihood of SCOTUS striking down Texas’ vigilante Abortion ban, and hold the quintessential “Fuck Rahm Emmanuel” segment of the show, plus, your calls and IMs!

Sam and Emma host Tyler Edward Stovall, Professor of History and Dean of the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences at Fordham University, to discuss his recent book White Freedom: The Racial History of an Idea.

Sam and Emma host Tyler Edward Stovall, Professor of History and Dean of the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences at Fordham University, to discuss his recent book, “White Freedom: The Racial History of an Idea,” looking at how the construct of liberty, largely from the French and American perspective, was built around a central element of whiteness. Professor Stovall takes on the mythologies of Peter Pan, looking at how Pirates and Indians were treated in white childhood, as these symbols of freedom from responsibility, something that comes to define white adulthood, and how these represent the specificity of white liberty. They also look at the appropriation project around piracy when it comes to shaping Hollywood heroes like Johnny Depp, and how fetishization combined with a de-racialization worked to reinforce this exclusive liberty, before they dive into the French and American roots of liberty, and how the nations were ingrained in promoting the enslavement of nonwhite people internationally. Next, Professor Stovall dives into the slipperiness of whiteness, specifically around the symbol of the statue of liberty, first exploring how this was read as an anti-immigrant symbol, before looking at how the original model for the statue came as a warrior breaking free from chains of enslavement, and how the changing reading of this worked in tandem with a changing perception of whiteness. Tyler Edward Stovall, Emma, and Sam, then dive into the effects of the first and second world wars on the treatment of liberty, with Woodrow Wilson’s gift to the world following the Great War as freeing Eastern Europe to democracies while colonized nations remained under control, before the WWII tore open the racialized sores of liberty, centering western concepts of white supremacy and colonialism in the most public genocide to that point, forcing the US to actually take on this issue, resulting in free countries engaged with UN over doubling in the decades following it, while France attempted to double down on their empire, involving themselves in two bloody failures of war. They wrap up the interview with the state of liberty today, looking at the battlegrounds in the US as BLM and defund the police begin to question what our perception of freedom is and what it should be.

And in the Fun Half: Nomiki Konst joins Emma and Samas they cover Dave Rubin’s backing out of a debate on Big Tech regulation for totally legitimate reasons this time, Devin from St. John talks overuse of antibiotics, Manchin says compromise isn’t enough, enough is enough, and enough is exclusively what he says, and they discuss how progressives can take back the narrative from centrists. They admire “the Good Liars” taking on CRT protesters in VA, expand a little on the VA elections, Tom Friedman reminds us that capitalism is what’s too big to fail, the earth is fine to fall by the wayside, Donald Trump continues to hit on both antisemitism and anti-antisemitism, and Sarah from NJ talks fascist business boys and the genuine dangers they pose, plus, your calls and IMs!

Sam and Emma host  Laleh Khalili, Professor of International Politics at Queen Mary University of London, to discuss her recent book Sinews of War and Trade: Shipping and Capitalism in the Arabian Peninsula.

Sam and Emma host  Laleh Khalili, Professor of International Politics at Queen Mary University of London, to discuss her recent book, “Sinews of War and Trade: Shipping and Capitalism in the Arabian Peninsula,” on how the maritime trade infrastructure has become a microcosm of global capitalism, and what it can teach us about labor relations, lasting imperialism, and the gig economy. Professor Khalili starts with a distillation of the current role of maritime trade, with over 80% of good transported by sea at some point, from raw materials coming from Africa, Australia, and the global south in general, working through production in China, and finally moving across the world in their final form. She next walks Emma and Sam through how maritime trade has revolutionized the global economy, completely shifting the world away from regional production, and helping bolster the power and imposition of the North Atlantic economies, allowing them to reiterate the imperial economics of old, as they take raw materials from developing economies and sell them back, building the debt of the rest of the world. She also touches on the internal shift in North Atlantic economies as industry shifts abroad and service economies begin to take their place at home, ensuring that the inequalities between laborers in debt, and capitalists with credit are reiterated no matter the regional constraints. Next, they dive into the key material of maritime trade, as they explore the transport of crude oil that has aided the rise of Qatar, Kuwait, and the UAE as central ports, looking at the self-reinforcing relationship between maritime innovation and the increased production of hydrocarbons. Laleh, Emma, and Sam also dive into what makes port location so important, and the variables that come into play, before they wrap up the interview by touching on the labor exploitation central to maritime trade, and how the already precarious gig work of shipping workers, truck drivers, and port workers has been upended by the pandemic. Sam and Emma also touch on this weekend’s updates on the reconciliation and bipartisan infrastructure bills.

And in the Fun Half: Emma, Sam, and the MR Crew discuss the ongoing strikes, and the right’s attempt to make it about vaccinations and masking, OAN reminds us that gender is distracting us from solving the crisis in Afghanistan (?), and John from San Antonio gives some killer updates ahead of tomorrows elections across the US. They also chat Michael Flynn and blackmail, two topics never too far apart, Angel from Jersey discusses NJ’s conservative consciousness, and Anthony from Ohio talks Forbes surprisingly misappropriating Adam Smith to put down unions. There’s also conversation on the fall of empire and the disillusionment with democratic voters, plus, your calls and IMs!
