Sam hosts Drs. Noa Nessim & Libby Wetterer, 3rd year family medicine resident physicians and members of the Committee of Interns and Residents (CIR) who, in affiliation with the Service Employees International Union (SEIU), are a part of organizing efforts at the Montefiore Medical Center in the Bronx. First, Sam runs through updates on NYC’s crackdown on not abusing homeless people, Hakeem Jeffries coming out on top for Democratic minority leader, and more, before diving into Rep. Mary Peltola’s pitch-perfect response to her party’s (Democrats) undermining of Rail labor, centering the needs of workers over the minimal profit of an already booming industry. Then, Drs. Nessim and Wetterer join as they dive right into Montefiore Medical Center’s sudden divestment from the Bronx communities that they have served for ages, shutting down clinics left and right while shifting funding towards regions served by private insurance agencies, before moving to the relationship between Montefiore Medical Center and its employees, walking through the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic and social unrest on spurring organizing among residents and interns, and how Montefiore took advantage of the COVID squeeze on the healthcare industry by keeping their demands of doing more with less even as the pandemic eased. Next, they dive into the driving desire of a new moral compass behind the healthcare industry, exploring the networks of Doctors’ and Nurses’ unions across the US, and the impact that successfully unionizing Montefiore Medical Center would have, before wrapping up the interview by tackling McKinsey consultants’ role in spurring this disinvestment from their communities and exploring the best actions for the general public to take moving forwards. Sam also dives deeper into the horrendous mainstream coverage of the labor bargaining between freight rail workers and their employers, with all of the emphasis going to the impact these workers would have on our economy, and none of it on why companies with record-breaking profits are actively sacrificing it. And in the Fun Half: Sam watches Charlie Kirk grapple with Kari Lake’s defeat as he once again fails to do the one thing he was hired to do (turn the youths conservative), David from Washington speculates on the recent missiles that fell in Poland, and Adam from LA explores how deep the GOP has poisoned the well of discourse around LGBTQ+ people. John from Cleveland discusses Jon Stewart’s interviews and why liberals lend credence to credentials, and Sam dives deep into Stephen Crowder’s incredibly cold open as he tiptoes through addressing the Kanye discourse while still pleasing his white supremacist followers. Sam also talks with Hannah about coverage of the Tigray War and the difficulty of speaking without expertise, plus, your calls and IMs! Sam and Emma host Kate Aronoff, climate reporter for the New Republic, to discuss the developments coming out of the COP27 conference in Egypt. Then, they are joined by Jonah Furman of Labor Notes and author of the Who Gets The Bird? newsletter on SubStack to discuss the recent labor updates across the country, including the impending U.S. federal rail strike. First, Sam and Emma run through updates on the UC teachers’ strike, the tally of over 400k early voting ballots in GA, Arizona suing an Arizona county over refusing to certify the election because of another Arizona county’s minor shenanigans, the upcoming marriage equality vote, and various Supreme Court ongoings, before parsing through Kevin McCarthy’s analysis of the GOP’s shortcomings during these past midterms. Kate Aranoff then joins as she explores what COP27 actually is, what environmental policy is being discussed, and who the major actors at the conference are – from the actual national delegates to the private companies’ observers. After tackling the particular role of petrol states at the conference, Kate, Emma, and Sam walk through the history of the UN’s climate change conference and the policy it has sponsored, with the US consistently throwing its weight against any compensatory funds for poorer nations or any policy that attempts to hold developed countries responsible for the environmental impact of their climate policy, as seen specifically with the Kyoto Protocols, before diving deeper into how COP27 has seen that begin to change, writing in a loss and damages fund. They wrap up the interview by tackling the actual material impact of these conferences and the US’s obstructionist actions. Next, Jonah Furman walks Sam and Emma through the particular labor obstacles presented for organizing Railway labor action, exploring the early passing of the RLA well before unionization took hold in the US, and how it creates countless federal obstacles to labor action in the industry. They wrap up by tackling the recent action taken by Joe Biden, in lockstep with Schumer and Pelosi, to push forward his rejected contract, and discuss where the workers’ fight can go from here. And in the Fun Half: Sam and Emma parse through Tim Pool’s recent fiasco of an interview with Kanye, Milo Yiannopoulos, and Nick Fuentes, as they get to the heart of Kanye’s anti-semitism claims, ponder the Jewish vote, and more. Troy from Washington talks about the moderate performance by moderates, Lord McAllister calls into school Sam on the legacy of the Lords of the Scotts, and Joe from Orange County expands on the Established Titles grift. Sam and Emma host Dale Kretz, visiting assistant professor of history at the University of California, Santa Barbara, to discuss his recent book Administering Freedom: The State of Emancipation after the Freedmen's Bureau. First, Sam and Emma dive into updates on the US’ sanctions on Venezuela, Elon Musk’s targeting of left voices on Twitter, the collapse of Manchin’s permitting side deal, and Georgia’s early voting boom, before diving a little deeper into the blooming GOP Presidential race, with Asa Hutchinson addressing some of Trump’s recent associates. Dale Kretz then joins as he dives right into contextualizing the role of federal government in the leadup to the US Civil War, with no income tax or major presence before beginning to change as the South split from the country, pushing the North to set up its “Yankee Leviathan” of state-sponsored expansion Westward alongside mass investments into the mobilization of resources, the aggrandizement of its federal authority, and the set up of a veteran-focused welfare state. Professor Kretz then shifts focus to the visions of emancipation that were present in the US leading up to Lincoln’s proclamation, beginning with the more conservative theories grounded in colonization and imperialism, and the radical visions of abolitionists that focused on the bolstering of civil rights and redistribution of millions of acres of land to those that actually worked it, before diving into the actual program that attempted to bring about reconstruction: the Freedmen’s Bureau. This bureau, as Kretz explores, was essentially set up (as much American bureaucracy is) to undermine its own aims, with focuses on individual cases, means testing, and incredibly minimal funding ensuring the processes would move slowly and help reconstruct the lives of only a handful of the 4 million folks it was created for. Wrapping up, Kretz, Emma, and Sam explore how the populist movements that followed this era fell to the exact enemy that reconstruction failed to address (institutionalized and cultural racism), a problem that still presents itself to working-class solidarity today, and why a progressive left critique of bureaucracy must both emphasize the empowerment of its people as citizens, including serving them en masse and recognizing the stratification of civil rights. And in the Fun Half: Sam and Emma discuss the ultimate grift of buying a silly little gift for a friend, before parsing a little further through Republican primary possibilities, diving into Donald’s untouchable nature, the fallout of his dinner with Kanye and Nick Fuentes, and Ben Shapiro’s lackluster response to such severe antisemitism. They also tackle Sam Harris’ departure from Twitter, Brett Weinstein’s acknowledgment of how well-practiced he is at apologizing for his blatantly false talking points, and Elon Musk’s continued petty reign over the Bird App, plus, your calls and IMs!

2975 - Facebook's Addiction To Misinformation; A Call To Drawdown U.S. Military Bases Abroad w/ Karen Hao & David Vine
We hope everyone had a great Thanksgiving! The MR Crew are off today, so Sam and Emma are bringing you two pre-recorded conversations from last year that hold some relevance in this current moment: Sam sat down with Karen Hao, China tech and society reporter at the Wall Street Journal, to discuss her piece "How Facebook got addicted to spreading misinformation" that appeared in the MIT Technology Review. Then, Emma speaks with David Vine, professor of political anthropology at American University, to discuss his brief titled "Drawdown: Improving U.S. and Global Security Through Military Base Closures Abroad", published at the Quincy Institute for Responsible Statecraft. Check out Karen's piece here: https://www.technologyreview.com/2021/03/11/1020600/facebook-responsible-ai-misinformation/ Check out David's brief here: https://quincyinst.org/report/drawdown-improving-u-s-and-global-security-through-military-base-closures-abroad/ Become a member at JoinTheMajorityReport.com: https://fans.fm/majority/join Subscribe to the ESVN YouTube channel here: https://www.youtube.com/esvnshow Subscribe to the AMQuickie newsletter here: https://am-quickie.ghost.io/ Join the Majority Report Discord! http://majoritydiscord.com/ Get all your MR merch at our store: https://shop.majorityreportradio.com/ Get the free Majority Report App!: http://majority.fm/app Check out today’s sponsors: Sunset Lake CBD: This Black Friday Sunset Lake CBD & the Majority Report are teaming up to turn America’s most consumerist holiday into a fundraising opportunity for a great organization. Sam and Emma host Astra Taylor, co-founder of the Debt Collective and author of the recent book Remake the World: Essays, Reflections, Rebellions, to discuss the recent updates on President Biden's student debt forgiveness plan. Then they are joined by Sarah Moran, the U.S. Country Director for GiveDirectly to discuss their work on guaranteed income initiatives. It's our last live show before Thanksgiving, so tune in! First, Sam and Emma run through updates on US mass shootings, GOP leaders’ attempt to stop the SEC investigation into FTX, and Matt Walsh going victim-blaming mode on the mass shooting victims at Club Q. Astra Taylor then joins as she dives right into Biden revitalizing the student loan moratorium now that his debt relief has been put on hold, outlining how the moratorium could come to an end (via Supreme Court action, debt cancelation, or reaching June 30th), and where the Court battle current stands. Expanding on this, Astra, Sam, and Emma walk through why the Supreme Court’s conservatives (like Amy Coney Barrett) and their ideological obsessions might actually save student loan action, and why, despite that, an ideologically inconsistent result isn’t unexpected either. Wrapping up, they tackle the role of the Biden Administration in the future of this battle, walking through where the Debt Collective has been applying pressure, where Joe Biden’s mindset is currently at, and why the President so absolutely does have the authority to cancel this debt. Sarah Moran then jumps right into the work that GiveDirectly has been engaging in over the last decade, exploring the nature of the program as an argument-in-action on why direct cash assistance works, walking through where the over 500mln in cash assistance has gone, and how, no matter the community, the money consistently goes to the primary needs of family and community. Next, she dives into the role of the “multiplier” effect on local economies, as the assistance is returned to the economy 2.6x fold, before they wrap up the interview by tackling GiveDirectly’s work alongside local governments and why it must be a supplement, rather than an alternative, to social welfare systems. And in the Fun Half: Sam and Emma watch Condoleeza Rice and Hillary Clinton revise that Libyan intervention was good, actually (as, of course, all other US intervention) with Jon Stewart, Hershel Walker takes it from above him in the GA GOP, and talks erections between Lindsay Graham and Ted Cruz. Tucker keeps on going with his stochastic terrorism in the wake of the Club Q shooting, and Matt Walsh stops on the side of the road to yell about the age of consent, plus, your calls and IMs! Sam and Emma break down the biggest headlines of the day. First, Sam and Emma dive into local responses to the Arizona voting issues, with two counties not named Maricopa refusing to certify results because of what happened in Maricopa, and the massive statement issued by Ehsan Hajsafi, captain of the Iranian soccer team, in the wake of his country’s ongoing political repression. Next, they parse through more updates on the horrors that occurred at Club Q in Colorado Springs this weekend, including the Right’s refusal to acknowledge their rhetoric’s stochastic impact, as they double down on their concerted effort to stoke transphobia and violence, criticizing the victims of the mass shooting and as well as any amount of empathy passed their way, also diving into a recent interview between Chris Rufo and Tucker Carlson that perfectly encapsulates how the GOP has gone about marking transgender and homosexual people as threats to our children while capitalizing on various elements of liberal institutions to legitimize them. And in the Fun Half: Sam and Emma watch Bret Weinstein grapple with having to debate with someone who thinks he is wrong, dive a little deeper into Kari Lake and Co’s election shenanigans, and discuss the really incredible UAW and education organizing going on across the US. Jack from Brooklyn discusses grappling with news-inflicted depression, CJ from Illinois explores the GOP’s failed midterms bigotry, and Kowalski gives updates on whether vegans get the pass and his general well-being. Sam dives into a new song lyric he heard on the radio and Allison in Rhode Island asks how the poverty caps for social welfare are determined, plus, your calls and IMs! Sam and Emma host writer Raina Lipsitz to discuss her recent book The Rise of a New Left: How Young Radicals Are Shaping the Future of American Politics. First, Emma and Sam run through updates on the tragic terrorist attack in Colorado Springs, ongoing rail union bargaining, Kari Lake’s voter disenfranchisement claims, Russian-forced blackouts across Ukraine, and Mike Pence asking if it’s criminal to follow illegal advice. Raina Lipsitz then joins as she dives right into tracking the emergence of a new left in the US beginning with the Occupy movement in the early 2010s and the dawning of a new era of American class consciousness, before walking back through the previous few years of radicalization and disillusionment under the Obama Administration, as economic struggles continued and policy on the environment, immigration, and reproductive rights fell to the wayside. Next, they parse through the shift from disillusion to action, as people saw the relationship between power as a marginalized person and power as a worker, and got a political place to funnel this passion with Bernie’s campaign in 2016. Raina, Emma, and Sam, then walk through the major divide between the progressive and corporate wings of the Democratic party, both in terms of how mainstream Democratic leadership undermines progressive candidates (Bernie, India Walton, etc), and in where their actual ideology departs on a policy and electoral level. Wrapping up, they tackle the massive resurgence of organized labor over the last few years, with the politically motivating force of labor power pushing the Democrats forward in 2022, giving more depth to their message than “not a fascist,” and explore the future of the progressive wing of US politics. And in the Fun Half: Sam and Emma parse through this weekend’s tragedy in Colorado Springs, discussing the violation of a necessary space for a queer community facing more and more marginalization, and the greater stochastic terror behind this attack, stemming from the likes of Chaya Raichik and Matt Walsh, before diving into the New York Time’s recent story on the knowledge of Conservative SCOTUS justices’ previous involvement in Court leaks. John from Ohio breaks down the disappointment of Tim Ryan, Chris from Boston discusses COVID coverage today, and Jack from Boston asks for help responding to anti-progressive talking points, plus, your calls and IMs! It's Casual Friday! Sam and Emma host Heather Digby Parton, contributing writer at Salon.com and proprietor of the blog Hullabaloo, to round up the week in news. Then, they are joined by the legendary RM Brown! First, Sam and Emma run through updates on the quite-loud quitting occurring at Twitter, Biden looking to protect Saudi Prince MBS from legal jeopardy, the GOP’s growing House Majority, and the mass Starbucks strikes nationwide, plus, Sam shows neck. Digby then joins as she, Sam, and Emma dive deep into the recent announcements of Democratic leadership – including Pelosi, Hoyer, and Clyburn – stepping down from their positions, while seemingly anointing their moderate successors, exploring how a Hakeem Jeffries leadership in the house presents an even more antagonistic relationship with the progressive wing of the party than even Nancy Pelosi had previously had. This brings them to tackling where progressives go next, having prepared no real challengers to leadership positions, even if the Senate and Presidency remain more progressive than they have in decades. Wrapping up, they explore the Republican nominees for leadership, why a Kevin McCarthy leadership will still be undermined by shadow speaker Marjorie Taylor Greene working behind him, and why all of the GOP plans for the next two years (center Hunter Biden, January 6th, and COVID) will likely help the Democrats more than it will help them. RM Brown then joins as he explores the concept of “big timing,” ponders how the hell Tim Pool can even get away with being so outrageously incorrect and hypocritical, and asks Joe Rogan to explore more of Texas’ local talent. And in the Fun Half: Sam and Emma parse through the incredible updates on Elon Musk’s Twitter debacle, the spite coming back at him from the company and its (now largely former) employees, and how long the site might survive. They also tackle the corruption behind Qatar’s upcoming World Cup, the EU’s discussion around Amazon’s surveillance practices, and the important updates from the one and only Patriot Awards. Emma hosts Leslie Kern, professor of geography, environment, women's and gender studies at Mount Allison University, to discuss her recent book Gentrification Is Inevitable And Other Lies. Then, she is joined by writer Jacob Silverman to discuss the recent developments surrounding the crypto exchange FTX and its founder, Sam Bankman-Fried. First, Emma runs through updates on the GOP making their House Majority official, Mitch McConnell beating out Rick Scott for Senate Minority leader, same-sex marriage legislation making it past the filibuster, violence in Iran, and a mass Starbucks worker strike in the US, also parsing through the ProPublica leak of a discussion between various anti-choice lobbyists. She’s then joined by Professor Leslie Kern, as she dives right into the nature of the monster of gentrification, first looking at the unnatural forces of modern neoliberalism that make it seem so inevitable today, with local and federal governments removing regulations and smoothing the path for capital and multinational organizations to turn housing into an asset class and use it as such. After diving deeper into this financialization of something necessary for life, taking spaces fundamental to the existence of urban communities and turning them into spaces of speculation and tourism built for outsiders, Professor Kern and Emma explore why the combination of a capitalist land market and mass disinvestment from certain communities will almost always point towards gentrification. Wrapping up, Professor Kern walks through the coining of the term in 1960s London to recognize a process that had been ongoing for a while, looking to explore the cultural drive that pushed certain middle-class homeowners away from suburban sprawl (not to mention the obvious economic elements), before the rise of neoliberalism in the ‘80s began to make urban centers a generally desirable investment for the rest of the middle-class, setting the stage for the third, finance-backed wave of gentrification that we see today. Jacob Silverman and Emma then dive into the rapid rise and fall of Sam Bankman-Fried, founder of a massive crypto empire in the FTX exchange and Alameda Research firm, diving into how his Ponzi scheme turned him into a billionaire on paper, while myriad liberal institutions offered him legitimacy, allowing him to effectively run wild, investing billions in others’ money completely unregulated. Wrapping up that story, Jacob and Emma discuss the echo of the 2008 financial crash that can be seen in the recent Crypto crashes, and the greater implications of SBF effectively disappearing billions of dollars from investors. Sam hosts Ari Berman, writer at Mother Jones, to discuss his the midterm elections and his recent piece "How Wisconsin Became the GOP’s Laboratory for Dismantling Democracy". Then, Sam is joined by Aaron Kleinman, director of research for the States Project at Future Now, to discuss how Democrats did in the midterms at the state level across the country. First, Sam runs through updates on the missiles fired into Poland yesterday, Donald Trump officially launching his 2024 candidacy, federal and state judiciary ongoings, and more, before walking through Mitch McConnell’s response to Rick Scott challenging his Senate leadership position. Ari Berman then joins, diving right into the severe shift in Wisconsin politics that followed the election of Scott Walker in 2010, as a Koch-backed Republican trifecta launched their case study for attacking democracy on the state level, going after the core of the swing state’s progressive base by undermining unions and voting rights, reforming campaign finance laws, and instituting intense gerrymandering. This brings Ari to parsing through the dichotomy that ensued over the next decade, as Wisconsin’s demos continued to vote narrowly between the two parties while the GOP majorities in the state houses continued to grow, best seen in the 2018 midterms where Democrats won 54% of votes statewide, yet Republicans still held 64% of seats. Next, they tackle the future of gerrymandering as the Supreme Court tiptoes closer and closer to undermining the involvement of either independent commissions or state courts in the matter, before wrapping up the interview by walking through the role of governors in fighting back against gerrymandered legislatures (it’s getting increasingly difficult) and why this will continue to be a major issue until we get a new Supreme Court. Aaron Kleinman and Sam then parse through the various victories by the Democrats at the state level, including flipping both chambers and achieving a trifecta in Michigan, flipping the Senate and retaining the House in Minnesota, and performing incredibly well (with votes still coming in) in Pennsylvania and New Hampshire, also touching on results from Arizona, Colorado, and Maine. After addressing the upcoming Moore v. Harper case and its likely impact on the power of state legislatures, they wrap up the interview by tackling the importance of the 2024 elections and where the States Project’s work is likely going next. And in the Fun Half: Sam and the crew dive into Trump officially announcing his 2024 candidacy, Mitch McConnell coming out victorious in the Senate leadership battle, and Ben Shapiro’s response to discussions of codifying same-sex marriage. Chris from Brooklyn dives into the Majority Report’s role as a vocal piece for activists, Thomas from Raleigh discusses the recent NC elections, and Brennan from Kentucky explores Moore v. Harper. El Conipción talks about Texas police brutality, Nick from LA gives updates from his city’s election, and A Square debates whether this really is DeSantis’ moment. Plus, your calls and IMs! Sam hosts Mark Joseph Stern, senior writer at Slate, to discuss the recent opening arguments that have come in front of the Supreme Court. First, Sam runs through updates on the Democratic victory in Arizona bringing Kari Lake down, the GOP creeping even closer to a House majority, Biden’s attempt to renew the student debt repayments, and Iran detaining minors for protest, before watching the right cope with their disappointing showing last week. Mark Joseph Stern then joins as he dives right into the joint affirmative action case being taken against Harvard and UNC, walking through why – despite it supposedly hinging on the 14th Amendment – the majority of the arguments and discussion has been conservative racial aggrievement about policy, with the legal theory coming from the more liberal judges while still appreciating policy impact. Next, Mark parses through Haaland v. Brackeen, the upcoming Supreme Court case that ostensibly deals with states’ rights to lay claim to native children living on reservations, and the larger impact of weakening the rights of reservations and their laws in the eyes of the US courts, opening it up to exploitation by both the state and corporation, also drawing a parallel to Georgia’s treatment of indigenous peoples in the lead up to the Indian Removal Act. Mark Joseph Stern and Sam also tackle the optimism for the Talevski v. Health and Hospital Corporation case and the future of people’s right to have federal protections enforced, before wrapping up with the continued investigation into the Roe leaks. And in the Fun Half: Sam dives into the potential overhaul of GOP leadership as Rep. Andy Biggs’ announcement that he will be challenging for Speaker of the House and Rick Scott attempts to hide his disdain for McConnell. Em from Baltimore dives into the success of Michigan’s attempt to address gerrymandering and Zack from Michigan dives into Proposal 3 officially codifying abortion into the state constitution. Sam updates us on Russia allegedly launching missiles into Poland, and Rodney from Omaha critiques Sam’s sense of humor. Sam and Emma host Walt Bogdanich and Michael Forsythe, investigative reporters with the New York Times, to discuss their recent book When McKinsey Comes to Town: The Hidden Influence of the World's Most Powerful Consulting Firm. First, Sam and Emma run through updates on the Democrats retaining the Senate (and potentially expanding on it with Georgia), the GOP winning what could be the slimmest House majority ever, and the University of California graduate workers strike, before diving into why Sen. Bill Cassidy’s “We’re not a Cult” shirt raises a lot of questions already answered by the shirt. Then, Walt Bogdanich and Michael Forsythe join as they dive right into their investigative reporting on the massive global management and consulting firm McKinsey & Company, advisors to Fortune 500s, Governments, Dictators, and those all the way down the global power structure with little to no public knowledge of their work. Then, they unpack the “values” of McKinsey, ranging from their primary concern of putting their client’s interests above those of the firm, to the more obscure values of “act with integrity” and “an obligation to dissent,” and how their reporting seemingly undermined these elements. Next, Walt and Michael walk through the greater history of consulting work, with McKinsey’s work with GM beginning in the 1950s and instigating the shift of capitalism towards ephemeral and hyper-financialized practices, bolstering the income of the C-Suite while workers became forced to rely on safety nets, all while the firm acted as a cover for any bad decisions or accountability coming back to hurt the upper echelon of the company. Wrapping up, they unpack the myriad conflicts of interest in McKinsey’s work, including advising Big Pharma, every element of the insurance and medical industry, tobacco companies, and then also the FDA that supposedly regulates them, and explores how anti-trust and other regulation can begin to reign in these monopolists of power. And in the Fun Half: Sam and Emma cover the mass layoffs coming from two of the richest men on earth (Musk and Bezos), and the greater failures of the existence of Billionaires, Mike from Santa Barbara dives into the future of DACA and immigration, and Joe Rogan says that “everybody knows” that being trans is just a weird fetish – all while the conservative push for abusive transphobic policies likely led to their collapse last Tuesday. Matthew from Philly dives into contract law and the rights of ride-share drivers, and John from San Antonio reflects on the 2022 midterms, and how the remaining votes might get counted, plus, your calls and IMs! It's Casual Friday! Sam and Emma host Alex Pareene, Contributing Editor at the New Republic and proprietor of the AP newsletter on Substack, to sum up what's happened since Tuesday night's midterm elections. First, Emma and Sam run through updates on Elon’s Twitter, inflation beginning to ease, AOC’s call for Jay Jacobs to resign, and the lingering midterm races, before diving deeper into the recent right-wing media crusade to keep Donald Trump from announcing his candidacy. Then, Alex Pareene joins as he gets right into parsing through the state of the midterms three days out, with the Dems having essentially secured 50 Senate seats, and the loss of the House largely able to be attributed to races in CA and NY. Next, they discuss the state of Roe coming of the elections, as even with the House minority Dems likely have the strength to push for codification, and walk through the recent judicial obstruction to Biden’s student debt relief plan. Alex also gives his perspective on the DeSantis-Trump beef, whether either of them will think twice about running (doubtful), and why – no matter how bright the spotlight – running against Trump is a mistake for GOP politicians. Wrapping up, they tackle the very valid criticisms of New York State Dem leadership by AOC and walk through the likelihood of Twitter declaring bankruptcy and the general destructive force of billionaires. And in the Fun Half: Sam and Emma discuss the difference between sinking money in an industry-plant campaign (Amy McGrath, Charlie Crist) and doing so on a more grassroots campaign (Beto, Stacey Abrams), Tim Pool has a bunch of people on his show to prove to them he doesn’t understand politics, and more retiring republicans come out against Donald Trump. They also dive into Sean Patrick Maloney’s recent response to AOC’s criticism, and Brian from Dallas explores how the Democratic party consistently fails younger generations, plus, your calls and IMs! Emma hosts Ryan Grim, DC Bureau Chief at The Intercept, to discuss some of his recent coverage of Tuesday's midterm results. First, Emma runs through updates on the Georgia runoff, continuing vote counts in Nevada and Arizona, the massive surge of independent votes to the Dems, and the razor-thin edge of the Boebert race, also diving deeper into Jesse Watters blaming the blame game as he singles out single women and children as the faults of our society. Ryan Grim then joins as he dives right into the mandate to fight for reproductive rights that was delivered by voters this week, walking through how the Roe decision impacted this election (and maybe saved the Senate for the Democrats), and why – even if Republicans win the house – a campaign to codify Roe into law could take advantage of the vulnerable standing of countless House Republicans, not to mention helping bolster the push for centrist Dems like Manchin and Sinema to finally come out against the filibuster. Next, Grim and Emma parse through the impact of the New York Democratic machine on the massive losses felt by the left across the state on Tuesday, highlighted by DCCC chair Sean Patrick Maloney bigfooting progressive Mondaire Jones out of the race only to lose to the GOP, first walking through the impact of Cuomo’s governorship in shaping the NY legislature around a center-left and right-wing alliance, and how Jay Jacobs (Chair of NYS Democratic Committee) has carried the torch. Wrapping up, they discuss the incredible success of the progressive branch of the Democratic party during this election cycle, and discuss where the future of progressive electoral leverage and power lies. Sam, Emma, and the MR Crew reflect on a surprising midterm election and break down some of the biggest results from last night. Then, they're joined by Adam Green, co-founder of the Progressive Change Campaign Committee (PCCC), to discuss the midterm results from the progressives perspective. First, Emma and Sam run through updates on the role of inflation and abortion in yesterday’s election, Democrats gaining full control in all the “M” states (MA, MI, MN, MD), the success of left-wing referendums across the US, and touching on both Meta’s mass layoffs and updates from Ukraine, before diving into New York state as the big Democratic losing ground, and why that was largely set up by its previous Democratic Governor (Cuomo) and Mayor (Adams). Adam Green then joins as he begins by parsing through the mainstream Democrats’ “win or lose, stab progressives in the back” strategy leading up to the midterms, and how that completely fell through with last night’s incredible success for the left, with voting blocks nationwide proving their embrace of left-of-center policy (particularly via referendum) and democracy writ large, with no major progressive loses really occurring. After tackling the upstream fight that faced the Democrats this election cycle (particularly following the centrist stifling of Biden’s entire economic agenda), Adam, Emma, and Sam discuss the likelihood of a runoff in the Georgia Senate race, and wrap up the interview with an extended conversation on where Biden and the Dems should go next. 2963 - News Day Tuesday MIDTERMS EDITION! & The Israeli Election That Solidified Israel's Hard-Right Turn w/ Amjad Iraqi
Sam and Emma break down the biggest headlines as the midterm elections approach this evening. Plus, they're joined by Amjad Iraqi, editor at 972 Magazine, to give us the state of play of what happened with the Israeli elections. First, Emma and Sam run through updates on Donald Trump’s buildup to another presidential run, midterm early voter suppression attempts and the efforts to fight back, and early talk of potential Zelensky-Russia negotiations, before diving deeper into Tucker’s recent expert coverage on why John Fetterman must die. Amjad Iraqi then joins as he gets right into assessing the recent election of perhaps both the furthest right and most stable government in Israeli history, before he steps back a few years to discuss the developments in Israeli politics that led us here, walking through the last decade of affiliation being defined around one’s support of Netanyahu, despite rampant conservative beliefs even among the anti-Bibi coalition. After tackling the fermentation and growth of far-right Israeli politics – across the spectrum of Zionists –during the Bibi years, they parse through the fracturing of the Joint List alliance of the four Arab-majority parties and the role liberal Zionists played in the issue, as well as assessing the state of the labor and left parties in Israel. Jumping further back, they tackle the lasting reactionary impulses in the wake of the Second Intifada and the bolstered Islamophobia of the aughts and how it set the stage for Bibi’s right to rise, and wrap up by exploring the central role of the Israeli judiciary in the current political moment. And in the Fun Half: Sam and Emma discuss the Democratic funding of Don Bolduc, Matt Walsh appears on Joe Rogan to show off his expertise (it is neither in queer psychology nor counting), and JR Majewski challenges Tim Ryan and Nancy Pelosi. James from Fort Worth discusses the employment of teachers ON election day, Sam from Youngstown grapples with his pessimism regarding tonight, Hunter from Atlanta discusses felon disenfranchisement, and Mike and Daniel from NY and Austin expand on midterm discussions, plus, your calls and IMs!

Sam and Emma host Nicole Hemmer, professor of History at Vanderbilt University, to discuss her recent book Partisans: The Conservative Revolutionaries Who Remade American Politics in the 1990's. First, Sam and Emma run through updates on Twitter’s Terms of Service strict Elon Musk-enforced parody laws, Biden’s talks with Russia, the drying Colorado River, and early voting backlash heading into the midterms. Professor Hemmer then joins as she dives right into a quick overview of the arc of her book, beginning with the Reagan Era’s birth of neoliberalism and working through the extreme neoconservative polarization in the ’90s and 2000s, before she jumps back to the divide between Reagan’s regime and the George H.W. Bush administration, both in terms of geopolitics – with the end of the Cold War – and on the domestic side – with the emergence of conservative political activists. Diving deeper into this reactionary revolution, Sam, Emma, and Nicole look to the shift from Reagan’s oddly optimistic spin on conservatism to the party of Gingrich in the 1990s that behaved with the frenetic urgency of minoritarian rule, obstructing government in any way they could while their radicalism was bolstered by the rise of talk radio paranoia and a Democratic party that was chasing them to the right. After briefly tackling the rise of conservative talk radio and its ability to zero in on a particular brand of anger and agreement, Hemmer parses through this ‘90s reactionarianism as a response to a growing mainstream progressive movement that supported people of color and women in leadership roles and (occasionally) took sexual assault and bigotry seriously. The professor then looks to the George W. Bush regime as the end of the true Reagan republicanism, seeing it as a clear bipartisan failure by his departure from office, and leaving the party open for the new right groups (be they Tea Party or Alt-Right) to take hold. Wrapping up, they explore the future of the far-right attempts to normalize their own extremism, looking to right-wing legislatures already attempting to codify their right to the electoral votes. And in the Fun Half: Sam and Emma discuss how Donald Trump is winning big big big for the Republican nomination for President in 2024, also touching on his DeSantis nickname soft launch before talking with Will from VA about the historical prevalence of Russian imperialism. They also parse through the absolute hilarity of Elon’s first week behind the desk at Twit HQ, and Dave Rubin hosting proof-of-COVID Tina Forte ahead of her election against AOC. Tulsi Gabbard continues to be a hollow nationalist, and Chuck from Kentucky asks some questions about US support in Ukraine, plus, your calls and IMs! Sam and Emma host Heather Digby Parton, contributing writer at Salon.com and proprietor of the blog Hullabaloo, to round up the week in news. First, Emma and Sam run through updates on Elon Musk’s assault on now-former Twitter staff, surging US employment numbers, Democratic polling in Georgia and Pennsylvania, and the San Francisco Police’s “Quiet Quitting” trend ahead of the recall of Chesa Boudin, before diving into Trump’s recent announcement of his “very very very [probable]” 2024 presidential run. Digby then joins as she dives right into the state of polling heading into the midterms, walking through the contrast between how much better polling is now than one year ago and the stagnancy that they show in comparison to expectations around the Dobbs decision, also touching on the continuing trend of US political polling becoming more and more out of touch with actual voting. Next, she, Sam, and Emma reflect on the progressively pessimistic and dubious media coverage of the Democratic party, beginning with the coining of the “liberal media” term in the Nixon era, and continuing through to the constant bashing of Democratic chances and tactics that we see today (as in the coverage of Hillary’s emails). Wrapping up, they tackle Biden's late but useful pivot towards pinning inflation on corporate greed, look at Tim Ryan’s recent statement on January 6th in front of a Fox audience, and what action to take heading into the midterms. And in the Fun Half: Sam and Emma discuss Elon Musk’s swift destruction of Twitter’s moderating abilities, and the potential impact of a payment-based verification service heading into an election. Mike Lee publicly announces his fight against social security, Chris from Fairfax discusses his town’s campaign for rent control, and Gabe in the Berkshires discusses ballot questions in Mass. Kowalski explores upcoming ballot measures in Nebraska, Kayla in CA discusses the drama in LA city council races, and Joe Rogan says it actually wasn’t his fault for spreading transphobic misinformation, plus, your calls and IMs! Emma hosts Victoria Bassetti, Senior Advisor of States United Action and author of Electoral Dysfunction: A Survival Manual for American Voters, to discuss the upcoming state elections all across the country coming up next Tuesday. First, Emma runs through updates on ANOTHER Fed interest rate hike, polling in PA, WI, and NC ahead of the midterms, Bolsonaro’s private concession, and Netanyahu’s return to Israeli politics with a far-right coalition behind him, before diving into Biden’s address of the presence of democracy on the ballot in 2022. Victoria Bassetti then joins as she gets right into the work being done at States United Action to track the presence of anti-democratic candidates, beginning in 2021 with reports from both the grassroots and institutional sides of a rising tide of election deniers running for office, and inspiring SUA to keep tabs on state races for the big three seats (Governor, Attorney General, Secretary of State). After painting a picture of the serious prevalence of election deniers on ballots across the US, Bassetti and Emma walk through the ballots in various swings states, exploring why Arkansas and Georgia have no election deniers on the ballot while Arizona and Michigan might have multiple seats go that direction, and touching on the prevalence of these politicians even in solid blue places like New York. Wrapping up, Victoria and Emma very briefly touch on the upcoming Moore v. Harper case in the Supreme Court, walk through the various right-wing attempts to stifle voting (both mail-in and in-person), and discuss how individuals can fight back against these tactics heading into the midterms. And in the Fun Half: Emma is joined by Matt and Brandon as they assess the recent discourse on anti-semitism and Black Hebrew Israelites, before watching an old Bo Burnham clip on capitalism’s evolution from colonization of land to its attack on attention, and Keister from Florida discusses the anti-semitism at the recent Georgia-Florida game. Fox host Pete Hegseth explores how the libs made up social studies, bells, and sitting in rows, Sam from Wisconsin talks anti-Matt Walsh protests, and Matt Binder parses through his deep-dive exposé on Jimmy Dore’s sockpuppet account, plus, your calls and IMs! 2959 - Constitutional Amendment To Ensure Workers Rights In Illinois; Leveraging Industrial Policy For Unions w/ Tim Drea & Lee Harris
Sam hosts Tim Drea, President of the Illinois AFL-CIO, to discuss the Workers Rights Amendment that is on the state ballot next Tuesday. Then he is joined by Lee Harris, reporter at The American Prospect, to discuss her recent piece "Industrial Policy Without Industrial Unions". Sam begins by running through updates on charges against CVS and Wallgreens in an opioid lawsuit, the GOP continuing to lead polling for the House, the NLRB’s response to Starbucks union busting in Ithaca, and Bibi returning to the top of Israeli politics, before diving deeper into Joe Biden’s recent highlighting of the GOP’s stances on Social Security and Medicare in his campaigning. Then Tim Drea joins as he and Sam dive right into what the Workers Rights Amendment in Illinois entails, working through the right to a safe workplace and worker safety alongside securing the right to bargain, before diving into why the WRA is necessary with the rising trend of state-level attacks on workers rights already having come to Illinois, with the labor-supporting legislature successfully fighting off Bruce Rauner’s union-busting policy. After a greater discussion on Illinois as an epicenter for labor organizing in the US, Tim and Sam walk through the various fights the Illinois AFL-CIO is engaged in, and why you can’t favor creating jobs over making sure that the workers come home from them. Lee Harris then joins as she and Sam tackle the recent Inflation Reduction Act’s role in bolstering US industrial policy, exploring why industrial policy is important in a shift away from the neoliberal reliance on the free market, and why, despite that, a focus on ensuring these are unionized and well-paying industrial jobs is a necessary step. They parse through the recent job creation via the CHIPS act and the IRA, discussing how the varying support for labor across US states creates a race to the bottom to secure funding, and how private companies are already looking to get around any vague requirements for decent worker treatment. Wrapping up the interview, they explore the Biden Administration’s failure to properly address certain labor scandals, and discuss what can actually be done to help bolster the state of labor in this country. And in the Fun Half: Sam discusses Samuel Alito’s recent attempt to use the ol’ Elizabeth Warren tactic as an excuse to undermine affirmative action, Paul from Illinois discusses bail reform, and Ben Shapiro discusses why it was wrong, not bad for Candace Owens to defend the bad AND wrong things that Kanye West was saying. Connor for Kentucky calls in about his campaign for KY’s 5th Congressional District, Glenn Greenwald appears on Tucker just in time to not address the myriad lies Tucker has been spreading that directly involve Glenn’s own reporting, and Ed from Oregon discusses the success of push-pull tactics on the right. Dennis Prager explores the complexity of lesbians and the simplicity of gay men, and Ross from Florida discusses discourse around Ukraine, plus, your calls and IMs! With one week until the midterm elections, Sam and Emma break down the biggest headlines of the day. First, they run through updates on the Supreme Court – as Chief Justice Roberts blocks Congress access to Trump’s tax returns – AIPAC’s attacks on Summer Lee, and Bolsonaro maintaining his silence in the wake of his defeat, also touching on the continued grain shipments coming out of Ukraine and updates on midterm polling. Next, Sam and Emma parse through Charlie Kirk’s assessment of the attack on Paul Pelosi as he plays defense against any conservative accountability ever, and explore the greater impact of conservative conspiracy and whether having sitting congresspeople declaring Nancy Pelosi treasonous and deserving of death would actually make people think she was treasonous and deserving of death. They also dive deep into the recent Supreme Court deliberations on affirmative action, first walking through the obvious legacies of racial discrimination that set up society writ large as the violator of the Fourteenth Amendment, before walking through the 50-year process of the conservative attack on affirmative action, beginning in 1978 and continuing through the recent cases against Harvard and UNC. Wrapping up that conversation, they explore the various reactions to these cases across the count, including Ketanji Brown Jackson painting a thought-provoking parallel between a legacy student and an ancestor of slaves and Justice Clarence Thomas asking if diversity even actually means anything anymore. And in the Fun Half: Sam and Emma talk with Sandy from Ontario about the recent Canadian elections and her recent interview with one Sem Sadar. Mina from Florida explores the Right Wing’s long game, Cole James Cash calls in to preview his upcoming interview with Anna Delvey, and Dave from PA explores the Philly DSA’s recent abortion counter-protests. Dave Rubin celebrates Elon’s twitter takeover by just walking through a prolonged Glenn Greenwald thread, and VG from Seattle gives updates on the state of USPS letter carriers, plus, your calls and IMs!
