The Majority Report with Sam Seder
Andreas Malm joins Sam to discuss his new book, “How to Blow Up a Pipeline: Leaning to Fight in a World on Fire.” Andreas begins by explaining that while the pandemic has temporarily tamped down the climate movement, it has simultaneously led to a 7% drop in world-wide emissions and demonstrated how government can effectively intervene in the private sector during a crisis. Then, Sam asks Andreas to explain the two strategies of the climate movement, one being putting pressure on the government to pass policy and the other being reducing profits of fossil fuel companies through physically shutting down their operations. Andreas discusses the limitations of peaceful climate activism and argues for the need for a more radical flank in the movement. And finally, as it turns out, renewable energy is actually much cheaper to produce, but companies refuse to switch over because they can get away with a much higher markup on fossil fuels than they would be able to on renewables.

And in the Fun Half: Emma talks a little football, compensation for college athletes goes before the Supreme Court, is Matthew McConaughey running for governor of Texas?, Lil Nas X is selling “blood soaked sneakers,” how to address gun violence, Peter Navarro spews lies about the origins of the coronavirus, plus your calls and IMs!

Emma hosts Edo Konrad, Editor-in-Chief of +972 Magazine, to discuss the rise and success of the Irsraeli right and last week’s election results. Edo begins by explaining the political failure of centrist left candidate Benny Gantz and his decision to join Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s right wing coalition in last year's election. Then, Edo dives into Palestinian politics in Israel, explaining the consolidation of the four Palestinian political parties, the disintegration of the Joint List, and Mansour Abbas decision to join Netanyahu’s coalition. Finally, in order to ensure his own political survival, Edo talks about Netanyahu’s dangerous decision to bring Jewish extremism into the fold of his party and the potential long term implications of that political move.

And in the Fun Half: Nomiki tunes in, exploitation in the video game industry, Chuck Schumer wants you to write letters to Joe Biden to cancel student loan debt instead of doing his job, Emma’s done wasting time on Glenn Greenwald, Marjorie Taylor Greene is outraged that liberals are trying to keep Americans safe, Marco Rubio’s wake up call comes in the form of a mariachi band, plus your calls and IMs!

Sam interviews Jennifer Berkshire & Jack Schneider of the Have You Heard podcast about their book,  A Wolf at the Schoolhouse Door: The Dismantling of Public Education and the Future of School.” Jack begins by giving a brief history on the origins of the anti-public education movement in Bary Goldwater’s 1964 presidential campaign, as a response, in part, to the civil rights movement. Jennifer explains how the right has already begun laying the groundwork for the total privatization of education through advocating for “funding students, not systems,” in which parents are given vouchers to decide how they want to educate their children. Then, they discuss how the Democratic Party has also contributed to the disintegration of public schools through commodifying education by placing more importance on standardized testing and introducing charter schools. Jennifer and Jack make the point that as important as the public education system is, it is not the solution to poverty that billionaires such as Bill Gates claim it is. This leaves the question, what is the goal of our public education system and how can we protect it from those trying to dismantle it?

And in the Fun Half: Mike Lindell promises Trump will be back in August, Bernie joins Amazon workers from the picket line in Alabama, John Joyce’s “Grinch Act,” the LAPD detains reporters during the Echo Park protests, what turned Emma and Matt into a lefties, Matt’s thoughts on the JFK assasination, who would win? Steve Schmidt vs. Rick Wilson and Sarah Huckabee Sanders vs. Meghan McCain, plus your calls and IMs!

Sam and Emma host Alex Pareene, staff writer at The New Republic and co-host of “The Politics of Everything” podcast, to discuss the passage of voter suppression legislation in Georgia, Joe Manchin’s role in the filibuster negotiations, and Kyrsten Sinema’s political strategy in Arizona. Alex assesses the Biden presidency thus far and critiques Biden’s failure to play a leading role in spreading vaccines to the Global South and requiring vaccine companies to share their patents. Then, through the lens of Biden’s first press briefing, Alex discusses the issues with journalism and mainstream media.

Afterwards, Carl Beijer tunes in to go through a series of questions about socialism ideology and in practice. Sam challenges Carl’s ideas on private property vs personal property, government management of the economy, exploitation of labor, manifesting the will of the people in a consolidated government, and more.

And in the Fun Half: Jimmy Dole says “journalist” Dave Rubin should be allowed enable as many white supremacists on his show as he wants, Dan Crenshaw is impressed with Biden’s vaccine roll-out, Congressional candidate Dan ‘Big Dan’ Rodimer needs a better director for his campaign ads, Tucker Carlson says liberals are forcing Republicans to vote for fascists, plus your calls and IMs!

Sam and Emma host ProPublica journalist Alec MacGillis and author of “Fulfillment:Winning and Losing in One-Click America” to discuss how Jeff Bezos has used America’s infrastructure to make Amazon the most dominant monopoly in the US. Alec explains how Amazon has been a driving force of regional inequality and has stunted prosperity and business activity around the country, including in the cities where it resides. Starting with Amazon’s founding in Seattle, Alec talks about the conglomerating effect of tech companies and Amazon’s ability to strategically avoid paying taxes through setting up warehouses in states with a smaller sales tax and moving profits offshore. Through the interview, Alec explores the question as to whether this is an issue specifically with Amazon’s unethical company practices or if this is indicative of a fundamental flaw in our capital structure that awards massive trusts. With the majority of Democrats believing that Amazon is the most trustworthy institution in America, what can be done to reverse the domination of these tech monopolies?

And in the Fun Half: Medhi Hassan calls out the Biden administration for funding COBRA instead of the more cost efficient option, Medicare for All, Mike Lindell uses the word “suckabuck,” the hat caller is back, minimum wage jobs at Friendly’s, Meghan McCain is impressively unimpressive, plus your calls and IMs!

Sam and Emma host Jemima Pierre, professor of African American Studies at UCLA, to unpack the long history of Haiti, the first free black republic established in 1804, and successive years of occupation and exploitation by France and the US. Then, Jemima discusses how this history has led to the current political situation in Haiti where the Organization of American States (OAS) and the UN have essentially propped up dictators, such as current leader Jovenel Moïse, against the will of the Hatain people. After, Brian Concannon, director of Project Blueprint and advisor at IJDH, joins to further explain the U.S.’, along with France and Canada’s, economic and geopolitical interest in thwarting Haitian democracy. Brain describes steps that the Biden administration and the House of Foreign Affairs Committee should take to end their support of Jovenel Moïse’s government and restore Haitain sovereignty.

On today's show: Biden gives bid of support to Alabama workers and their right to unionize.

Sam and Emma host MIT professor Justin Reich (@bjfr) on his latest book Failure to Disrupt: Why Technology Alone Can’t Transform Education on remote learning's failures during the Covid crisis and how we can improve schooling in the event of future pandemics. While Silicon Valley has promised great advancements in education through trendy new technology, it hasn't exactly panned out that way. Examining things like proctoring software (which functions like spyware), auto-grading, and MOOCs (Massive Online Open Courses), Reich shows how tech alone cannot mitigate inequality or revolutionize education.

On the fun half: Jen Psaki says Cuomo accusers deserve to be treated with respect and dignity, supports independent investigation. Asked about Biden administration decision to not sanction MBS personally and general accountability, Jen Psaki says US will hold Saudi Arabia accountable, suggests US doesn't sanction heads of state personally. Trump hints that he might run again, beating Democrats a "third time" (crowd goes wild). Fox and Friends pumped that Trump is back, Kilmeade says Trump looks thinner, he wants to unite the GOP. Right wing figure espouses Qanon beliefs during CPAC panel, talks about being canceled for addressing Q, child trafficking and finding out what's really going on. Reporter asks if WH is pushing harder for Neera Tanden than $15 minimum wage. Asked about horrible death rates in South Dakota, Kristi Noem says press should ask same question to other governors. Singer botches National Anthem at CPAC. Young girl sells lemonade to pay for her brain surgery in "heartwarming" local news story. Plus, your IMs.
