Good Thursday morning, joining Michael today is professor Daniel Bessner, author of Democracy in Exile, to discuss his latest piece in the Nation "Foreign Policy Beyond Good and Evil."  Bessner argues that as the 2020 primaries come into view progressives should be cautious about how Warren and Sanders understand international relations. Bessner and Brooks begin their conversations in the 1930s when the Western allied forces and Northern Atlantic countries confronted Nazi forces. During the Cold War, the United States cemented its foreign policy world view as democratic goodness versus evil which constituted anything standing in the way of Americans international agenda. Comparing adversaries to Nazis gives American foreign policy leaders license to endless militarism abroad. Bessner argues that we need to judge international leaders bad policies beyond "good and evil," comparing the Iranian regime to Nazism is neither accurate depiction nor productive to building a stable Middle East. So then, how can the Left advocate global humanitarian crises in American politics? Bessner believes that developing new domestic humanitarian aid policies would be a good first step, albeit an ambitious one, towards a more just global community. Bessner and Brooks conclude the interview sharing their thoughts on the foreign policy positives and negatives of the leading progressive candidates (Sanders and Warren) seeking the 2020 nomination. Bessner leaves the show asking listeners to consider all the ways in which the military is valorized in American life. If we want to reframe US militarism we must first disentangle all the ways the military pervades our culture and everyday lives.

And in the Fun Half: how leftist foreign policy would play in conservative America, Trump's thoughts on Russian troops in Venezuela, Cory Booker turns his So. Carolina townhall stage into a church pulpit, Tucker Carlson says CNN and MSNBC get their marching orders from Nancy Pelosi, where Mayor Pete lies on the left ideological spectrum, Bernie's new M4A ad, Boris Epshteyn calls in, the Alt-Right's various connections to the Christchurch shooter, Ben Shapiro as conduit to all far right radicalism, the UN's problematic stance on Mozambique's recovery efforts, a long horizon of our politics, the problem with Beto in a national election, how Jimmy Dore poison's the left political well, plus your calls and IMs!

Author and Talk Poverty Editor Pat Garofalo (@Pat_Garofalo) joins us to discuss his new book, The Billionaire Boondoggle: How Our Politicians Let Corporations and Bigwigs Steal Our Money and Jobs.

On today's show: A breakdown of the web of intrigue surrounding Felix Sater.

Author and Talk Poverty Editor Pat Garofalo (@Pat_Garofalo) joins us to discuss his new book, The Billionaire Boondoggle: How Our Politicians Let Corporations and Bigwigs Steal Our Money and Jobs. It's business as usual for cities to compete with each other to see who can offer the most generous tax subsidy to attract any given corporation. But does this actually work out in communities' favor? Using examples like Amazon, a New Jersey mega mall, and the entertainment industry, Garofalo explains why, despite being politically popular, these kinds of tax breaks are never a good deal for the people living in distressed areas.

On the fun half: Nancy Pelosi at AIPAC: The House "came together to condemn the anti-semitic myth of dual loyalty." Chuck Schumer equivocates Omar's statements with Trump calling neo-Nazis "very fine people." Is Jamie scaring people away from the left by talking about anarcho-communism? Bill O'Reilly says Fox is losing lots of money because of MediaMatters and MoveOn. 2014: Steve Moore says Brownback is under complete assault from left, austerity is not actually happening. 2014: Steve Moore says Brownback is creating jobs again...Kevin Price says the numbers look small, but we need perspective. Bernie calls for release of Mueller report. Kamala Harris takes photo with California AIPAC leaders. Pompeo says America has been "infested" by "insidious new form" of bigotry "in the guise of anti-Zionism." Pompeo extremely happy that Trump recognized Israeli control of Golan Heights. Republican Congressman asks "Are you a socialist or a capitalist? Yes or no?"

On today's show, we respond to the Mueller Report.

Nunes says the Mueller report should be burned. Sam breaks down the findings that have been released so far. While not a complete exoneration, the Mueller investigation did not find evidence to support the two charges being investigated: collusion for purposes of tampering with the 2016 election, and obstruction of justice. But there's more that could come out when the full report is released, so stay tuned. Was Matt Taibbi wrong to compare the media's engagement around the Mueller investigation to its reporting around WMDs in Iraq?

Sam on the Jesse Lee Peterson show. Trump says he's fully exonerated, now we need to look at the other side. William Barr testifies that promising a presidential pardon would be a criminal act. Savannah Guthrie asks if Barr's judgment is impartial after writing that the president could not obstruct justice. Beto says he wants to means test Social Security on 2012 House campaign trail (oh hell no). Meghan McCain, speaking at AIPAC, insinuates that Ilhan Omar is not American. CBP detains 9-year-old US citizen, accuses her of lying about her identity. A brief exchange on the 2nd amendment. Fox guest explains why we need electoral college: "Balances & checks & balances." Plus, your calls and IMs!

On today's show: Pete Hegseth can't stand these damn identity politics. An entire Fox News segment dedicated to exploring Pete Hegseth's genealogical identity.

Virgil Texas of Chapo Trap House joins us for some wonkish talk of the 2020 field. Beto's appeal to voters What's the deal with #GravelGang? How about Andrew Yang? How much do the Democratic primary debates matter? What are Bernie's challenges at this point? How much does he need to win by to actually win?

Trump fumes and calls Fox's Maria Bartiromo "fake news" for grilling him on his attacks on John McCain. The MR crew is visited by a spirit that gives us insights into Trump one could only gain from another dimension.

On the fun half: Trump says Democratic candidates not attending AIPAC are anti-Jewish. Hegseth says candidates who skip AIPAC "may be anti-Semitic." One of Melania's platforms for her "be best" campaign is "opioid abuse." Trump explains how administration will cut off funding to colleges that de-platform right wing guests. Trump says he's been witnessing free speech problems for a long time, says he loves loans. Virgil recalls his run-in with the Yang Gang. Plus, your calls and IMs!

Good Thursday morning, joining Michael Brooks on today's Majority Report is Richard Beck to discuss his essay, "The Korean Peace Process" published in n+1. Beck breaks down American foreign policy on the Korean peninsula and it hasn’t done any real thinking in two years. Beck explains how all parties involved in the recent Vietnam Korean Peace Summit were on different pages. Coming out of Vietnam each side is two steps back from where they started, each side at least now has a more realistic understanding of what a peace agreement might look like in the near future. Beck explains how John Bolton has made it his agenda to offer no concessions to North Korea and demanded full denuclearization, a position untenable to Kim and his negotiators. Brooks and Beck broaden the conversation of how our foreign policy leaders treat authoritarian regimes with poor human rights records and how it is used to legitimize US intervention. With all this in mind Beck argues US media coverage of the Korean peace process is an inaccurate caricature of itself. Kim and Trump approach and role within their respective governments are mostly opposite. Beck then explores the role of China and Japan and each country's position on achieving peace on the Korean peninsula. Ultimately, Beck believes that if left to his own devices Trump would likely give up whatever he needed to in order to get a peace deal and the real prize for Trump, a Nobel Peace Prize--someone just needs to convince Trump that John Bolton is a "real bad guy."

And in the Fun Half: will social democrats gain support in Florida, some good political rap artists, the new poll tax in Florida, how Bernie is running against Trump, Stuart Varney doesn't understand why can't the CIA just take on Maduro, Elliot Abrams struggles to explain why Guiado should be recognized at Venezuela's legitimate president, an update on Lula and unrest in Brazil, the problem with Yang Gang, Warren's positions on white supremacy and medicare for all, plus your calls and IMs!

Joining Michael Brooks on today's show is Liz Franczak to discuss her new essay in the Baffler, "The Century of Spin," and the origins of neoliberal sociopolitical culture. Liz Franczak recounts the story of Edward Bernays, who “pioneered the field of modern public relations after serving under Woodrow Wilson during World War I, overseeing propaganda initiatives aimed at selling the war to the public and maximizing recruiting efforts.”  Bernays and his intellectual contemporaries felt that state managed economies and social democratic programs were a slippery slope to fascism. The masses needed to be guided by the intellectual class to stay away from what they thought was creeping fascism. This idea of "guided democracy" was developed by Walter Lippmann, a public intellectual and contemporary of Bernays, who sincerely thought he and his cohorts needed to take care of the unwashed masses. Which led to the summit at Mont Pelerin where Lippmann and leading classical liberal thought leaders (like Friedrich Hayek) convened to shape a new free market-based society committed to unwinding the post-war social democratic state in the West. Franczak argues the neoliberal rationality has created a new understanding of the Self as primarily itemized human capital. And while Europe has a longer historical understanding of the self to disentangle neoliberal culture, America does not have that advantage. Now several decades removed from the Mont Pelerin summit, what does our society look like? Franczak points out the failures of the neoliberal technocratic state and the nationalist populist rage railing against it, but wonders where does the rest of the country go? We run straight to the brands and things that make us comfortable Amazon Prime purchases, Instagram, and the things that provide us structure and security.

And in the Fun Half: the Senate votes to end US involvement in the war in Yemen, Howard Schultz's Make-A-Wish campaign lays out its policy platform, Anand Giridharadas's warning to Beto O'Rourke, thoughts on DNC super delegates, nuclear energy waste and private ownership, another failed Brexit vote, how Andrew Yang's UBI misdiagnoses systemic economic problems, Laura Loomer's latest investigative flop, and how a high schooler got the GOP Lt. Governor of Texas to pose with an "Abolish ICE" painting, plus your calls and IMs!

On today's show: Nancy Pelosi says she's never wanted to impeach a president.

Rutger Bregman (@rcbregman), author of Utopia for Realists: How We Can Build the Ideal World, joins us. In his book, Bregman argues for utopian thinking and posits some big ideas for progress. Universal basic income: its curious history and how it could improve people's lives, if implemented properly. The 15-hour work week: how we could take advantage of automation technology to perform less wage labor without being thrown into poverty. The ideology that keeps both capitalist and centrally planned societies from shooting for a post-work horizon. The value of an open borders policy. Do we need to subjugate capitalism? And some commentary on Bregman's infamous Tucker Carlson appearance.

Breaking news about Paul Manafort.

On today's show, historian Greg Grandin (@GregGrandin), joins us to discuss his new book, The End of the Myth: From the Frontier to the Border Wall in the Mind of America. At the foundation of America is the idea of expansionism. For centuries the United States has expanded its borders, markets, and policy in order to alleviate  domestic issues and would dilute problems of factionalism. Unlike other imperial powers, Grandin believes the United States married the ideas of liberty and imperial domination and created a fundamental national identity where expansion through imperialism could be see as an innate "freedom." But expansion is also hits limits. USA expansionism has hit walls during the Great Depression and then again Vietnam war; responses to these limitations addressed expansion in new ways. During the Great Depression expansion through socialization via the New Deal brought greater liberation and freedom from tyranny. Under Reagan, liberty and expansion existed as freedom from taxation and the government bureaucracy created after WWII. Moving to 2018, Grandin argues that Trump's policy and understanding of expansion exists at the southern border, it's a push back against universal liberalism and the idea that a global economy can lift all ships. Under Trump, the opportunity for growth is gone, there are limits and we need to take care of our own. The Wall is a real representation of hedonistic brutality that inverts the myth of the frontier and expansion, it is an expansion from within.

And in the Fun Half: John Hickenlooper is finally in the race, it's Riff City at CPAC, Clinton spox on MSNBC already have the knives out for Bernie, white Bernie supporters should be less defensive and listen to criticism, a listener recounts playing poker at a table full of Trump supporters, Doug Jones makes the case to expand the voter rolls, Brandon Straka made it to the CPAC stage, breaking down Donald Trump's marathon CPAC diatribe, Seinfeld explains the complexity of comedy in 2019, plus your calls and IMs!

On today's show, TYT reporter Emma Vigeland (@EmmaVigeland ) and comedy legend Andy Kindler (@AndyKindler) join us. On today's show, Sam, Michael and Emma discuss  this week's Cohen hearings as well as what to expect from Felix Sater's upcoming public hearing and Allen Weisselberg's potential testimony before the House Intel committee. Lost in the revelations of Cohen's testimony was the GOP's general incompetence at cross-examination. Mark Meadow's "I'm not racist!" grandstanding has come back to haunt him as reporters unearth his birtherism stump speeches from the 2012 primary in North Carolina. Meanwhile, on the other side of the globe, Trump and his foreign policy team leave Vietnam empty-handed, and the possibility of a peace accord is more distant than it was before the US envoy arrived in Hanoi on Tuesday.  Plus, the bombshell new report from the Times that shows Trump ordered officials to grant Jared's Top Secret security clearance. Sam and Emma also breakdown the latest round of Democratic-passed legislation and how Democratic lawmakers can address GOP "motion to recommit" amendments which aim to divide the majority party.

The MR crew and Sam wonder why Kindler hasn't had any Twitter beef the past several days. Andy says it's a result of a few good therapy sessions--we're happy for him! Then, what is an Andy Kindler appearance without catching up on our old friend Dennis Miller? Kindler and Sam then breakdown CPAC's *HILARIOUS* cocktail menu which really owns the libs. And, if you're in the midwest you can see Andy in Aurora, Illinois at the Comedy Shrine next week.

And in the Fun Half: Alex Jones and Joe Rogan think it's fun how they've liquified their audiences' brains, PsyGroup, anti-BDS measures and anti-semitism, Rep. Scott Perry's Jewsplaining, a libertarian calls in about a monetary system without a state, how to help fascist family members, corruption cases in Canada, where is Cliff, plus your calls and IMs.
