Author and documentary filmmaker Astra Taylor (@astradisastra), joins us to discuss her new book, Democracy May Not Exist, but We'll Miss It When It's Gone. Despite having existed for a long time as a concept, true democracy has rarely been put into practice. Capitalism is inherently undemocratic and other truths popularized by Occupy Wall Street. Why OWS happened when it did. What kinds of lessons and political organizations came out of Occupy? What should have been done differently? Why the left can and should change the rules of the system to benefit the 99%.

For this book, Hari traveled around the world and interviewed experts to identify the sources of our pain, including: Lack of control over one’s work conditions, childhood trauma, and the isolation of modern life. He traces many of these problems back to neoliberal capitalism, as well as forward to antisocial behavior as it manifests in the political sphere. Best of 2019: Identity Crisis: The Battle for the Meaning of America w/ John Sides + David Feldman & H. Jon Benjamin
John Sides (@johnmsides), professor of political science at George Washington University and co-author of Identity Crisis: The 2016 Presidential Campaign and the Battle for the Meaning of America, joins us. John Sides (@johnmsides), professor of political science at George Washington University, joins us to discuss his new book, Identity Crisis: The 2016 Presidential Campaign and the Battle for the Meaning of America. For this book, Sides researched voters' beliefs about how much the Democratic Party's policies helped black Americans, and found they grew substantially after Obama's 2008 election. Sides posits that Obama's election racialized US politics in a way they had not been previously, causing race, immigration and religion to play a major role in the 2016 presidential election. Then, from May: David Feldman then joins the program to discuss his "principles" and why in 2020 it's all about defeating Trump. While providing healthcare, food security, and government oversight are important things, the most important thing "in principle" is that we unit behind the candidate most likely to defeat Trump. Feldman says the threats of a inter-party circular firing squad and democrats staying home on election day are real and must be avoided at all cost. Additionally, Bernie is not reaching out to the middle class white males like Biden and cannot match Middle Class Joe because the former VP is just that, a middle class white male. While half the country doesn't have $500 for an emergency, Feldman understands, as a middle class man, who has experienced tragedy, that we start reaching out to the middle class and and then reach out to others from there. Feldman ends his interview explaining why it's important to take the advice of Rob Reiner in every aspect of your life. Finally, also from May: Sam and H. Jon Benjamin have a very uncomfortable interview about Benjamin's newish book, 'Failure Is An Option: An Attempted Memoir.' We're talking decades' worth of simmering resentment bubbling up to the surface uncomfortable. Seriously, why do we keep doing this?

Today's Best Of: On today’s show, Jamila Michener (@povertyscholar), Professor in the department of Government at Cornell University, joins us to discuss her new book, Fragmented Democracy: Medicaid, Federalism, and Unequal Politics. Medicaid is one of the most fundamental aspects of the US federal safety net, however it is fractured and constantly under attack by state governments, especially in GOP-controlled states. Michener explains that states have very expansive control over what they will and will not cover for its Medicaid recipients. The way that Americans provide care is fragmented and inconsistent. Michener says American social policy towards people living in poverty is one where we give people as little help as possible. States should have an much discretion as possible when dealing with its poor people. This is most illustrative in the difference between Medicare and Medicaid. In the former we have a nationalized program where the funding and policy is set by the federal program; and in the latter a program that is different from state to state, leaving a vulnerable class at the whims of its state’s balance sheet. Michener and Sam also consider lower class involvement in the political process and how their action or absence influences election outcomes. Finally, Michener describes the ground game for Medicare-For-All. On today's show: Lara Trump to federal workers not getting paid: "This is so much bigger than any one person." Tressie McMillan Cottom (@tressiemcphd), assistant professor of sociology at Virginia Commonwealth University, joins us to discuss her book, 'Lower Ed: The Troubling Rise of For-Profit Colleges in the New Economy.' With the rise of neoliberalism came the "education gospel," which claimed workers could, and should, raise their wages by getting four-year college degrees at their own expense. While it did not turn out to be true, this myth fed a boom in for-profit colleges. Through her interviews with students, employees, executives and activists, McMillan Cottom paints a full picture of these predatory institutions, which disproportionately impact working class women of color. Good Thursday morning, Michael Brooks hosts anthropologist Isabel Peñaranda and sociologist Julián Gómez-Delgado to discuss the ongoing general strike in Columbia and their piece in the Jacobin, "Colombia's New Awakening." As Columbia joins the global wave of social unrest, can the popular uprising resist conservative president Ivan Duque's efforts to co-opt the movement and deliver change to a country beleaguered by inequality and militarization? On November 21st, hundreds of thousands of people marched on the streets in Bogota, where Colombians gathered banging pans through the night for a week straight, protesting against neoliberal austerity policy measures like tax and pension reform. As the protests grew, all kinds of activists took their projects to the streets, including feminist groups, LGBT rights groups, and even anti-shark fishing groups--making the protests incredibly wide-ranging and varied. Brooks and Gomez-Delgado examine the current president, Ivan Duque, whose disapproval rating is at 70%. Duque came to power in 2018 after he gained the endorsement of Alvaro Uribe, the country's most popular politician in the 21st century whose extractive policies and close ties military forces made him an enemy of the left. Peñaranda then explains the history of left political suppression in Colombia and how that has helped form the current political unrest before the current conservative government. Brooks and Gomez-Delgado then explore US foreign policy and intelligence involvement in Colombia's domestic politics, specifically its role in pressuring communist communities in rural parts of Colombia. Brooks, Peñaranda, and Gomez-Delgado conclude their conversation considering what the next steps are in the protests and why a South American-focused and localized discourse is essential to producing material benefits for working people. Looking at a variety of case studies, Winter examines why the Democratic Party has abandoned state level politics, including: the priorities of wealthy liberal donors, the news media, the web of patronage w/r/t consulting firms, and the perceived threat posed by grassroots orgs. Happy Tuesday, Sam hosts journalist and academic Anne Nelson to discuss her new book, Shadow Network: Media, Money, and the Secret Hub of the Radical Right. Sam and Nelson begin their interview with a play-by-play of how fundamentalist Evangelical Christians rallied behind Ronald Reagan during his the 1980 election and helped fuel his victory with a strong turnout in southern and southwestern states. Nelson also explains the foundational tenets of Christian Nationalism, and the role of "Biblical Inerrancy," which states the word of God is in the text of the bible, in Christian Nationalists policy projects. Nelson's book explores the history and impact of the Council for National Policy (CNP), the professional umbrella organization for the country's most influential conservative organizations and activist groups. Nelson explains how the CNP brokered a deal with Trump in 2016, which involved adding Mike Pence as his running mate and establishing an Evangelical Advisory Board in Trump's White House. Sam and Nelson conclude their discussion exploring the role of conservative media outlets like Salem Media, and their ability to fill the void where capital investors starved and killed local news organizations. Good Monday morning, the Majority Report is back from the Thanksgiving holiday with a new interview featuring journalist Liz Plank on her new book, For the Love of Men: A New Vision for Mindful Masculinity. Sam and Plank begin their conversation discussing the need to expand the context surrounding gender discourse. Plank explains that we are more comfortable limiting boys in their actions in behavior in ways that evoke emotion or vulnerability. Yet, we have no issue promoting boys to perform violence, whether that be toy guns or certain video games. Considering the hierarchy of social roles, how they are gendered, and the value applied to them, Sam and Plank discuss how the state and American capitalism have shaped our understanding of masculinity in our culture. A foundational element of male identity in America is the role of "Provider." Sam and Liz discuss how, under capitalism, the part of Provider is magnified and brings stress that is not as prevalent in countries whose economies incorporate more elements of socialism. Closing out their conversation, Sam and Plank take on Sam's "zero-sum" discourse, what happens when white guys begin to lose their disproportionately large piece of the cultural and material pie? Plank concedes that there is a self-correction taking place in society and that white men are losing their entitlement, but, in the end, ending that entitlement will ultimately be a good thing as it will help bring more substantial equality. And in the Fun Half: a city-run grocery store in deep-red Florida, Mayor Pete's insincere free college proposal, John from San Antonio plants his Bernie yard sign and shares his latest thoughts on progressives need for delegates in 2020, Louie Gohmert and "the power of positive thinking" legal defense, John Kennedy double backs and reclaims his belief that Ukraine interfered in the 2016 elections, Bloomberg's unique take on dictatorship and democracy, Brandon Straka updates Walk-Away 2020, Mark Zuckerberg's private dinner with Donald Trump, Waleed Shahid from Justice Democrats explains the fight for Medicare for All, plus your calls and IMs! Today, legal historian Martha S. Jones joins us to discuss her new book, "Birthright Citizens: A History of Race and Rights in Antebellum America." Birthright Citizens tells how African American activists radically transformed the terms of citizenship for all Americans. Before the Civil War, colonization schemes and black laws threatened to deport former slaves born in the United States. Birthright Citizens recovers the story of how African American activists remade national belonging through battles in legislatures, conventions, and courthouses. On today's show, The New Republic's Alex Pareene joins us to discuss this week's impeachment hearings, the late entries into the 2020 Democratic primary, and his latest writings on both impeachment and the Democratic field in the New Republic. After exploring Chris Matthews' #fartgate scandal, Sam and Pareene dive into why Deval Patrick is entering the Democratic primary so late in the game. No candidate has ever won a primary or caucus after entering the contest so late. Pareene and Sam agree it's likely that Patrick is in the race to knock Warren's support in New England. Between New Hampshire's open primary and Patrick's broad support in Massachusetts, the former governor could hurt Warren's chances to win in her region. They also consider whether or not Patrick is in the race to be Joe Biden's VP pick, who does not seem likely to be a two-term president. And finally, where is Tom Perez? And why are there still ten candidates on the debate stage? Switching gears, Sam and Pareene take a wide-angle look at impeachment, including how it worked during the first impeachment of an American president, Andrew Johnson, and how congress used it as a tool to implement progressive policy during the Reconstruction Era. Sam closes out the show with the essential clips from yesterday's hearings, including Fiona Hill and David Holmes' thorough debunking of the conservative media's most trusted conspiracy theories. Good Thursday morning, today's show features a recent interview Sam recorded with journalist Stephen Kinzer about his new book, Poisoner in Chief: Sidney Gottlieb and the CIA Search for Mind Control. Kinzer and Sam begin their interview with a brief history of Allen Dulles and Sydney Gottlieb's obsession with mind control, which each man thought was essential to counter-intelligence during the Cold War era. Kinzer believes Gottlieb was one of the most powerful and unchecked government officials of the 20th century. Gottlieb was a quirky character who lived an alternative lifestyle at home, milking goats, studying Buddhism, but was carrying out psychological torture experiments under the CIA MK Ultra program; experiments that were reminiscent of Josef Mengel's work for the Nazis. Kinzer and Sam go through specific tests Gottlieb performed on unsuspecting subjects and what happened to the victims. Ultimately, Gottlieb discovered that extreme psychedelic drug overdoses could not produce mind-control, nor did it work as a truth-serum. That in mind, Kinzer posits that Gottlieb's MK Ultra tests are the dark prologue to future US torture programs, like CIA black sights and Abu-Ghraib. And in the Fun Half: the real material implications of impeachment proceedings in the Senate, breakdown of the most important moments from yesterday's testimonies, Ben Shapiro & Joe DeGenova's brilliant defense of Donald Trump, and the CNBC anchors are light-headed over the new Warren anti-billionaire ads. Good morning, joining Michael Brooks on today's Majority Report is Professor Mohamad Junaid to discuss the on-going situation in Kashmir. Brooks and Junaid begin their conversation with an overview of Kashmiri history, including its constitutional autonomy and the recent decisions by Modi's government to revoke the region's relative independence. Junaid explains that the Modi regime wants demographic transformation in Kashmir, moving Hindu Indians into the territory as a means to make way for industrialists to exploit natural resources and development opportunities in the region. Brooks and Junaid describe the Kashmiri history behind self-determination, and why the historiography of "India v. Pakistan" is not only misleading but erases the Kashmiri people and feeds into Indian and Pakistani nationalism. Broadening the conversation, Junaid explains the extent to which China has been a player in the Kashmir conflict over the past half-century. China has not been a stabilizing diplomatic force in the region despite its vast economic and trade interests in South Asia. Considering the nuclear threat and potential for "hot war" in Kashmir, how should the global community respond? Junaid argues that the rise of right-wing populism does not help the situation in Kashmir. He posits that our democratic institutions need to be more representative of our societies as a whole. A holistic approach centered on economic rights and human rights is the best antidote to the rash of right-wing populism taking hold of governments across the globe. And in the Fun Half: Ronald Raygun on Bernie Sanders' immigration plan, Bernie's workers Bill of Rights, Glenn Greenwald is assaulted by a Bolsonaro press apparatchik, Dan Crenshaw values Israeli alliance over the 1st Amendment, Trump tells his supporters "we are the elite," Hillary and Chelsea are yucking it up with Trevor Noah about Jeffrey Epstein, Jesse Watters' mom is ashamed of her son, Laura Ingraham playing her old "demographic changes" white supremacy, Julian Castro roasts Mayo Pete on the Daily Show, plus your calls and IMs! Author Aaron Glantz (@Aaron_Glantz) joins us to discuss his new book, 'Homewreckers: How a Gang of Wall Street Kingpins, Suckered Millions Out of Their Homes and Demolished the American Dream.' The 2008 financial crisis saw countless Americans lose their homes while the banks that caused it suffered zero repercussions. Glantz outlines how crooks like Steve Mnuchin and Wilbur Ross caused the crash by preying upon the average American via poorly regulated financial products, and how the government then let them shift 100% of the blowback onto regular people. The alternate model set forth by FDR in which homes were saved. The story of Sandra Jolley, a consumer advocate who secured an $89 million whistleblower settlement on a reverse-mortgage foreclosure scheme by Mnuchin's bank. Author Corey Robin (@CoreyRobin) joins us to discuss his new book, The Enigma of Clarence Thomas. On today's show: Kevin McCarthy indignant about impeachment, Steny Hoyer says GOP is just getting mad now. Corey Robin (@CoreyRobin), professor of political science at Brooklyn College and the Graduate Center of the City University of New York, joins us to discuss his new book, The Enigma of Clarence Thomas. While Clarence Thomas is currently the longest serving justice on the SCOTUS, he is not widely studied or understood. In this book, Robin explores the experiences that shaped his views and decisions, tying together strands including black nationalism, Afro-pessimism, patriarchy, and a belief in unfettered capitalism and state authority. At base, Robin argues, Thomas' belief in racism as an individualized, transhistorical, and impossible-to-vanquish force is similar to what liberals believe, yet also a primary driver of his conservative ideology. On today's show, Matt Stoller, author of Goliath: The Hundred Year War Between Monopoly Power and Democracy, joins Sam to discuss the history and future of antitrust and monopoly in America. Stoller says the inspiration for his book started with his work as a congressional staff member during the 2008 financial crisis and the Democrats' failure to hold the big banks accountable for their actions. Sam and Matt begin their conversation with the 1912 presidential election and the different regulatory responses from Teddy Roosevelt, Eugene Debs, Howard Taft, and Woodrow Wilson to the Robber Barron capital consolidation of the past decade. Moving forward to the 1930s, Stoller argues that capital powers (Mellon, Rockefeller, and JP Morgan) controlled much of federal policy. The New Deal was the experiment that showed democracy could work--breaking up financial autocrats, utility monopolies, and more. To quote Supreme Court Justice Louis Brandeis, "We may have democracy, or we may have wealth concentrated in the hands of a few, but we can't have both." Sam and Matt then explore the story of Wright Patman, a populist democratic congressman from Texas, whose life work was to hold powerful banks and corporations to account through rigorous regulations from his seat as Chairman of the Banking Committee. Patman was forced out by the younger generation of Democrats in the 1970s, which Stoller refers to as the "Baby Watergate" generation of elected officials who championed racial justice at the expense of holding capital accountable. Stoller argues that the anti-monopoly and regulatory measures pushed by Patman and their material implications are critical to racial justice, and something that is missing from our discourse on race in contemporary America. Sam and Matt conclude their discussion with how conservative intellectuals reframed American history to minimize the victories of workers' rights, antitrust, and regulation efforts of the New Deal. And finally, Stoller explains how people can begin to understand themselves as members of a free and fair democracy and how to fight the manipulative efforts of financier and oligarchic class. And in the Fun Half: Donny Deutsch thinks M4A will sink Democrats in a general election, the new IMF chief applauds Trump's tax cuts, Dr. Drew says housing is not a solution to homelessness, Washington Nationals fans cheer "lock him up!" to Donald Trump, Joe Scarborough's textbook false equivalency on the "lock him up" chant, Chris Coons is sad Trump was booed at the baseball game because he's a traditionalist, Joe Biden actually asked Obama not to endorse him, and how SuperPACs are just a fact of life for Biden, plus your calls and IMs! Sam is back for day two at the Mass Torts Conference in Las Vegas. Chris Tisi first joins Sam to discuss the progress on the Talcum powder lawsuit and when Johnson & Johnson knew its product caused cancer in women. While the litigation moves through the courts, Tisi hopes the FDA will follow the lead of Canadian Drug regulators and label Talcum as a "not fit for human consumption." Attorney Matt Schultz joins Sam next to discuss potential litigation against Juul, the vaping giant owned by Altria. Schultz explains how the rise of vaping products, and particularly Juul, took a virtually nicotine-free generation and turned it into the most nicotine-addicted age since scientists started measuring it. Finally, attorney Wes Bowden joins Sam to discuss PFAS forever chemicals used across US military and naval bases. These forever chemicals do not disintegrate naturally in our bodies or environment and cause cancer even in the most trace amounts. Bowden says that there are approximately 6 million Americans currently receiving bottled water from the government because of high traces of PFAS found in their drinking water. Sam makes his triumphant return to Las Vegas for the Mass Torts Conference! Jeff Gaddy from Levin Papantonio is Sam's first guest of the day to discuss the on-going multi-jurisdiction litigation going on against the opioid producers and distributors across America. Gaddy and Sam explore the extensive lawsuits against drug-makers and distributors and make sense of the various settlements decided in the past several months. Gaddy gives a play-by-play of how Judge Dan Polster separated the enormous case into more manageable cases, which helped bring about the first settlements in the opioid litigation. Gaddy and Sam conclude their conversation considering how drug companies declaring bankruptcy might affect these settlements and what that means for consumers. Carissa Phelps, an author, attorney, and advocate for exploited youth, joins Sam to discuss litigation against hotel corporations and their liability role in child trafficking. Phelps explains the role of police calls, reports, and even Trip Advisor reviews, which all point to recurring instances of child abuse at hotels across the country. Phelps goes on to share her own experience being sexually abused and trafficked as a young girl; and why it motivated her to dedicate her life to abolishing child sex trafficking. Sam and Carissa also get into the thornier issues surrounding sex work decriminalization and FOSTA-SESTA. Good morning, on today's Majority Report Michael Brooks hosts Matt Karp, professor of History at Princeton University, for his latest piece in the Jacobin, "Is This the Future Liberals Want?" Join as Karp and Brooks discuss the prospects of Trump in 2020 and the potential pitfalls of "progressive technocracy" defining the future of the Democratic party. Brooks and Karp begin their conversation exploring the broader course of the Democratic party's New Deal coalition politics transition away from working people. In losing this class configuration, Karp believes voters have put the individual politician above the policy platform, leaving the foundation of any movement unstable at best. Additionally, the restructuring of the global economy and left political parties moving away from class alignment have accelerated the political realignment underway across western democracies. Shifting gears, Brooks and Karp take on the political media discourse surrounding the "professional-managerial class" identity that the Democratic Party now upholds. Karp argues that this breed of Democrats does not have the fight that a material class-based party would in struggling for things like Medicare for All and Card Check. It's impossible to ignore the rate at which inequality is growing, which is why the professional class Democrats see Warren as a crucial candidate. But still, Karp and Brooks believe, given the track record of recent Democratic presidents, only a working class-driven candidate from the grassroots arm of the party can push through progressive legislation that produces material benefits for workers. The two conclude their conversation considering the challenges that a Bernie Sanders administration would face and how his grassroots movement would confront and mobilize against the capitalist class. And in the Fun Half: Bernie's debate performance and the Squad endorsement, recalling Bernie's defense of Ilhan Omar amidst anti-semitism attacks, remembering Elijah Cummings, assessing the Democratic primary field, the Serfs call in and share their charity drive stream, Kamala Harris can't stop talking about Twitter mods, updates on the Chicago Teachers' Strike, Warren's stance on Israel/Palestine, libertarians who like Bernie, Bullprog's story from the Minneapolis Trump rally, Warren supporter tells Fox News the billionaires class bitches too much about taxes, plus your calls and IMs! Meanwhile, here comes another one! A new whistleblower from inside the IRS says the Treasury Department tried to interfere with an audit of Trump’s tax returns. And lastly, progressives warn of a stealth privatization effort by the White House as Trump signs an executive order aimed at undermining the Medicare for All movement. And our QUICKER QUICKIES HEADLINES: CNN reports that President Trump mentioned the political prospects of Joe Biden and Elizabeth Warren in a June 18 phone call with Chinese President Xi Jinping. During the call, Trump reportedly told Xi that he would stay quiet about the violent Hong Kong protests as trade talks between the two countries progressed From the BBC; Hong Kong’s embattled leader Carrie Lam invoked emergency powers to ban face masks at the city’s pro-democracy protests, threatening offenders with one year in jail if they prevent themselves from being identified by police. Good morning, Eric Levitz joins the Majority Report to discuss his essay in New York, "The Bernie vs. Warren Debate We Need," and provide some clarity to the intra-left "Bernie or Warren" discourse. Sam and Levitz begin their conversation exploring the idea that "the American left's bark is louder than its bite." The left has helped shift the country's political discussion in the past several years and has gotten the ear of mainstream political elites and media, but it does not have the institutional power held by centrist Democrats like Schumer, Manchin, and Tester. Levitz argues that there's a gulf between the elite media discourse (which is young and left) and institutional power (which is old and rural) in terms of their desired goals and deliverable actions. Shifting gears, Sam and Levitz discuss the apparent differences between Sanders and Warren. For Levitz, it's not apparent that Sanders would stretch executive power more than Warren. The distinction worth making is that the two progressive frontrunners will push progressive policies through executive action more so than the leading centrist candidate Joe Biden. Sam also explains the political stakes of a Bernie Sanders presidency, and its commitment to a principled policy like Medicare for All. Calling for a vote on real progressive policy will draw more apparent distinctions within the Democratic party. Sam and Levitz conclude their conversation considering what constitutes the Democratic party now and what it would take to build a broader coalition of Democratic voters moving beyond 2020. And in the Fun Half: we have the president of Finland ask him a question, Trump would investigate the Bidens if he were Zelensky, Trump has decided his foreign policy actions in the Ukraine are now perfectly lawful, Corey Lewandowski is drunk on Fox Business News, the Blaze's Dave Rubin defends Jordan Peterson's enforced monogamy, the courtroom scenes from the Amber Guyger sentencing, the Ghost of Retroactively Classified documents calls from San Antonio, Ken Langone thinks Bernie Sanders wants to shoot him, Beto goes after Mayor Pete, but Yang is now the premier skater in the Democratic field, plus your calls and IMs! Three House committee chairmen sent a letter addressed to Deputy Secretary of State John Sullivan on the grounds that the Secretary of State Mike Pompeo “now appears to have an obvious conflict of interest,” the Wall Street Journal reports. Pompeo’s participation in the call between President Trump and the Ukrainian president, the lawmakers wrote, renders him a witness in the congressional impeachment inquiry, and as a result, “he should not be making any decisions regarding witness testimony or document production in order to protect himself or the president. And finally, Rudy Giuliani wants to sue congress. That’s right, Trump’s bumbling lawyer told Fox News’ Laura Ingraham that he wants to bring a lawsuit against House Democrats for investigating the president in the wake of revelations involving Trump's interactions with Ukraine. Ingraham called Giuliani’s proposal “novel” before ending Rudy’s legal fantasy when she reminded the former Associate Attorney General that members of Congress have immunity for anything they say on the floor. |

On today's show, Robert Kuttner (@rkuttnerwrites) founder of The American Prospect joins the Majority Report to discuss his new book, The Stakes: 2020 and the Survival of American Democracy. Kuttner and Sam begin their conversation considering the Trump presidency in terms of his cabinet members. Kuttner says the "establishment" cabinet members that have left were the primary actors keeping Trump from enacting his most anti-democratic policies. Kuttner believes that without a robust economic progress Democratic opponent in 2020, Trump will win a second term and dismantle American democracy beyond repair. While Trump appears to be a unique threat to democracy, Kuttner argues that Democrats have been equally bad in presenting an alternative vision. Democrats got into bed with Wall St under the Clinton and Obama administration which helped lay the groundwork for a Trump presidency that tied racial resentment to economic anxiety borne out of the great recession. Looking ahead to next year's election, Kuttner and Sam discuss the latest Iowa polling showing Warren's momentum growing, and how the Trump/Biden race looks now that the Ukraine whistleblower story is all over the headlines. Considering the prisoner's dilemma of the Sanders and Warren campaigns, Kuttner and Sam speculate on what happens to the progressive left if and when the teams begin to attack one another. The two conclude their interview considering what the best way to manage capitalism under a future left-progressive presidential administration, how Democrats should proceed with impeachment and the possibility of a brokered convention in Milwaukee next summer. And in the Fun Half: Nancy Pelosi's "Dear Colleague" letter, Donald Trump and Rudy Giuliani aren't quite on the same page about using aid to bribe Ukraine's president, Greta Thunberg exposes the hypocrisy of today's world leaders, Keeanga Yamatta Taylor shares her thoughts on black support for Bernie Sanders, Democrats are not suited to advocate for their constituents, dealing with political dissent amongst friends, starting a progressive media platform, plus your calls and IMs! Welcome to Majority.FM's AM QUICKIE! Brought to you by justcoffee.coop TODAY'S HEADLINES: Impeachment is now looking very likely after Trump admits he talked to Ukraine about investigating Biden. Meanwhile, Trump plans to hold a religious freedom event at the UN on the same day world leaders gather there for an important climate summit. And lastly, the GOP has internal data that shows any ban on vaping could destroy their hopes Trump winning reelection in 2020. And our QUICKER QUICKIES HEADLINES: A New York judge has fined a Queen’s landlord $17,000 for threatening to Call ICE on a tenant. Politico reports that Trump’s reelection campaign team is growing increasingly worried about a repeat winning performance in Michigan, considered the “crown jewel” of his 2016 victory. The concern illustrates how Trump’s support in Rust Belt states that propelled him to the presidency is evaporating. An eight-vehicle motorcade for Vice President Mike Pence drove onto Michigan’s Mackinac Island on Saturday, where cars have been generally banned for over a century. The motorcade angered locals, as well as observers on social media, including Michigan Democratic Rep. Rashida Tlaib, who called the the long line of black SUVs “disgusting”. And global women's rights advocates raised alarm Monday after a leaked letter showed the Trump administration is pressuring U.N. member nations to join an international anti-abortion coalition. The letter, first reported by the Guardian and set to be presented Monday during a U.N. General Assembly meeting on universal health coverage, urges nations to oppose the creation of "a new international right to abortion." |

Welcome to Majority.FM's AM QUICKIE! Brought to you by justcoffee.coop TODAY'S HEADLINES: Amid new reports that a high-level whistleblower complaint against Trump centers on Ukraine, Rudy Giuliani tells CNN, ‘Yeah, I asked Ukraine to investigate Joe Biden. So what?!’ Meanwhile, Colt, maker of the AR-15, is suspending its production of the rifles for civilians, calling the move a “market-driven decision.” And lastly, prominent black leaders prepare to condemn attacks by Bernie Sanders supporters amid the fallout of the Working Families Party’s endorsement of Elizabeth Warren. And our QUICKER QUICKIES HEADLINES: The number of birds across North America has dropped by nearly 3 billion since 1970, according to a report Thursday from Science Magazine. And sevens months from his announcement, Bernie has become the first 2020 candidate to reach 1 million donors. It took Sanders nine months to hit a million the last time around, and it took Hillary Clinton almost a year to reach the milestone in 2016. |

Writer and television producer Natalie Shure joins Michael Brooks on today's Majority Report to discuss her latest piece in the Jacobin, "Elizabeth Warren's Health Care Plan Still Leaves a Lot of Unanswered Questions." Michael and Natalie begin their conversation considering the ways politicians have described Medicare for All as anything but a single-payer system that is free at the point of service. Despite previously endorsing Bernie Sanders' Medicare for All bill, Warren's new plan for Medicare for All remains murky. Warren's strategy as it exists now does not mention eliminating cost-sharing. According to Natalie, "while single-payer shifts costs entirely into taxes, plans that maintain cost-sharing redistribute those costs more heavily onto people with greater care needs — disproportionately sicker and poorer people and women." A big sticking point for Natalie in the healthcare discourse is the word choice of politicians who refer to reforms as "access to affordable health insurance." This is not the language of candidates who are interested in creating a robust public institution, like Medicare for All, but rather the message of candidates create a more efficient market that should be reformed but not abolished. Considering all this, do voters think that Warren will fight for a vigorous Medicare for All while she hedges her language on healthcare and has pledged to make government corruption her primary campaign concern. Michael and Natalie end their conversation looking back at the Obama administration's existential fight to get the ACA passed in 2010. Remember, the ACA was initially proposed with a public option only to strip that away and then watered-down by lobbyists and health insurance special interests in DC. It will take a grassroots, continued effort from voters, pressuring their representatives to pass a Medicare for All option because the insurance industry will throw everything it has at stopping Medicare for All. And in the Fun Half: updates from Oklahoma and Kashmir, the pedantry of the MR university, how to protect unions and expand them beyond 2019, how Bernie plans to help workers in the executive office, Michael goes deep on Bernie's housing plan, how to convince Warren supporters of Bernie's positions, the possibility of single-payer healthcare, Andrew Yang calls for the decriminalization of all drugs, Mayor Pete still wants to pay premiums, plus your calls and IMs! And lastly, a day after Trump denigrates the homeless, Bernie Sanders unveils a $2.5 trillion Housing For All Plan. Businessman Daniel McCarthy, who is running for Senate in Arizona against Martha McSally, suggested this week that the US should annex Mexico. McCarthy says doing so could solve the nation’s immigration problem. And a new Fox News poll finds 59% of voters are extremely interested in the 2020 presidential election. That’s 27 points higher than around this same time in the last presidential cycle — and only one point off the record 60% extremely interested the week before Election Day in 2008. |

Welcome to Majority.FM's AM QUICKIE! Brought to you by justcoffee.coop TODAY'S HEADLINES: Republican Dan Bishop, the anti-trans bathroom-bill guy, narrowly wins last night’s special election in North Carolina. Meanwhile, the census finds that the number of Americans without health coverage is growing despite a strong economy. And lastly, United Nations investigators say U.S.-led forces may have committed war crimes in Syria. And our QUICKER QUICKIES HEADLINES: A report from NBC News reveals that Education Secretary Betsy DeVos has been blocking state law enforcement agencies from investigating student loan service companies by refusing to provide states with information relating to allegations of illegal activity in multiple states. The Washington Post reports that the Trump administration’s plan to overhaul the housing finance system will make mortgages more expensive for minority borrowers and aspiring homeowners in the South, the Midwest and rural communities. A new Washington Post-ABC News poll finds Trump is falling badly behind all of the leading Democratic contenders. At the top is Joe Biden who leads Trump by 15 points, Bernie Sanders by nine points, and Elizabeth Warren and Kamala Harris both have a seven-point edge over the president. And a new CNN poll finds 60% of Americans say Donald Trump doesn’t deserve to be re-elected. Trump’s approval rating remains about where it was in mid-August, with 39% approving of the job he’s doing and 55% disapproving. |

Peter Edelman (@peterbedelman), Carmack Waterhouse Professor of Law and Public Policy and the faculty director of the Center on Poverty and Inequality at Georgetown University Law Center, joins us to discuss his book, Not a Crime to Be Poor: The Criminalization of Poverty in America. On today's show: Trump says Bahamas refugees need paperwork for visas because "very bad people" will come. Despite being one of the richest countries on earth, America often treats its poorest citizens like criminals. In this book, Edelman traces the history of programs designed to help the poor and what went wrong in the neoliberal era that policymakers began criminalizing poverty and denying poor people, particularly poor people of color, the chance to get ahead. On the fun half: Trump fear mongers about sanctuary cities, refugees, and voter fraud. John Bolton fired! Brian Kilmeade reads a text where he claims he resigned. The crew debates a libertarian caller. Trump says he will release "extremely complete" financial statements before 2020 election. Laura Ingraham doesn't expect NFL player to defend black college athletes who have been exploited by college athletic system. CAP lays off, replaces entire unionized news room; Neera Tanden tweets supporting unions through the years. Valerie Plame's spy movie 2020 Congressional race ad is crazy. A plug for WYOSayNo!, a progressive activist org in Wyoming.
