The Majority Report with Sam Seder

Sam speaks with Matthew Johnson, interim director of Beloved Community Ministries, to discuss the demonstrations surrounding Atlanta's "Cop City." Then, Sam and Emma break down the biggest headlines of the day. First, Sam and Emma run through updates on the backlash to the officers responsible for the killing of Tyre Nichols, the lies involved in the initial police report, cooling inflation numbers, George Santos taking a step back from his committees, and the US’ response to political upheaval in Peru, before diving into coverage of Atlanta’s “Stop Cop City” protests which, while driven by peace, has inspired Governor Brian Kemp to call in the National Guard. Matthew Johnson then joins as he dives right into the legislation and development of the Atlanta Police Department’s “Cop City” training center, approved by Mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms without knowledge of the City Council in 2021, and aimed at replacing the biggest urban forest in the US with the biggest militarized police training facility in the US. Contextualizing this decision, Johnson then walks through Atlanta’s role as the most surveilled city in the US, the city with the worst racial income disparity, while featuring continuing gentrification and severe environmental racism, with a particular emphasis on the city’s water supply, all of which are factors that would be seriously enflamed by the construction of Cop City over the Atlanta forest. Next, Matthew Johnson and Sam explore the movement defending the forest as a vast coalition that Kemp and the Atlanta PD are attempting to pass off as organized domestic terrorism, slapping serious charges on protesters alongside the typical abuses of police brutality, which culminated with the murder of community member Torta. They wrap up by discussing the importance of supporting places like Defend the Atlanta Forest and the Atlanta Solidarity Fund, and the future of this fight.

And in the Fun Half: Tim Pool blames Defund the Police for fueling police brutality, Hochul continues to try to force herself into Cuomo’s mold of Progressive-hating Democrat, and Dave Rubin dives into his experiences in the hall of the ever-kind and gracious Elon Musk. They also discuss the persistence of anti-vaxxer rhetoric despite the clear signs that the vaccine mitigated COVID-induced myocarditis, and CNBC rails against the Marxism in Joe Biden’s FTC. Will from Nebraska discusses the impacts of the Right’s transphobic fear-mongering, and  Sam and Emma cover updates on Paul Pelosi’s attacker and his conspiracy blogging roots, plus, your calls and IMs!

Sam and Emma host Jefferson Cowie, Professor of History at Vanderbilt University, to discuss his recent book Freedom's Dominion: A Saga of White Resistance to Federal Power. First, Sam and Emma run through updates on the GOP acting as the House majority, Ronna McDaniels winning the election for RNC Chair, and the murder of Tyre Nichols by the Memphis Police “Scorpion Squad,” before parsing through the lackluster response from the right to yet another example of the overwhelming violence of the US police state. Professor Jefferson Cowie then joins as he dives right into how he came to focus so specifically on the evolution of ideas of “freedom” in Barbour County, Alabama, looking to the southern US’ particular anti-statist and anti-federal view of freedom that favors the freedom to dominate over the freedom from domination. Expanding on this lens, Professor Cowie explores various conceptions of freedom, including personal freedoms (as enshrined in the Bill of Rights), civil freedoms, and sovereign freedom – the freedom to control and dominate – and how the settler-colonial nature of the inception of the US aligns strongly with this latter idea. Beginning in this era, Jefferson walks Sam and Emma through “freedom” as a central political idea in the development of Barbour County, originating with the displacement of the people of the Muscogee Creek nations to clear land for slave labor, isolating them into a New Jersey-sized lock of land under supposed “protection,” and continuing through the white invaders’ insistence on overcoming the tyranny of the government protecting this land, igniting a full war with the Creek peoples, and even forcing the government to step in to fully put down the indigenous rebellion. Moving forwards, Professor Cowie then walks through the reconstruction era and the white supremacist reaction to the election of various Black and freed members of society, launching a full coup on election day 1874 with an attempted massacre of enfranchised free folks, and an establishment of a local regime led by J.W. Comer that exemplified this white freedom to dominate, institutionalizing hardcore prison labor within a system that brought the imprisoned population from 8% African American to over 90%, and launching the county into the modern era of white supremacist institutions. Wrapping up the story portion, Jefferson Cowie dives into the emergence of Alabama Governor George Wallace from Barbour County as the final stage in the development of the southern philosophy of freedom, ingraining his white supremacist attitude within arguments against federal tyranny and faux-populist rhetoric for liberty, before they conclude the interview by assessing how to balance differing conceptions of freedom, and the importance of the federal government in ensuring the greatest freedom for the greatest number of people.

Fun Half: Sam and Emma discuss the Right dismissal of the Tyre Nichols footage and the mass influx in anti-LGBTQ bills across the US, the GOP debates how to trim the woke from the budget, and Ben Shapiro blows the whistle on POLITICO’s puppetry of the American public’s opinion of the debt ceiling. Matt from Denver discusses his relationship to the Republican Party and their agenda, Amir from VA dives into his experiences in Brazil in the leadup to January 8th, Donald Trump’s 2024 strategy begins to unfold from the sky, and Dennis Prager explores the nuances of bullying children, plus, your calls and IMs!

It's Casual Friday! Sam and Emma host David Dayen, executive editor at the American Prospect to round up the week in news. Then, they're joined by David Feldman of The David Feldman Show! First, Emma and Sam run through updates on the charging of five Memphis cops over the brutal murder of Tyre Nichols, the right bickering over the next RNC Chair, Adam Schiff entering the race for Feinstein’s seat, and DeSantis bumping 1 million Floridians off of Medicaid, before watching Tyre Nichols’ mother, RowVaugn Wells, reflect on the legacy of her son. Then, David Dayen joins as he dives right into the arrival of Jeffrey Zients as Biden’s new Chief of Staff, parsing through his record as an “efficiency expert” and cost cutter, and his background in consulting as worrying features for the President’s primary day-to-day filter, before reflecting on Democratic establishment media’s defense of Zients as a “nice guy” whose past work you should somewhat ignore. Next, David walks Sam and Emma through Chuck Schumer cutting two massive bills that would have been a step towards breaking up Big Tech, including the American Innovation and Choice online Act – essentially preventing self-preferencing – and the Open Apps Market Act – which would take on the stipend that app monopolies (Google, Apple) take from in-app purchases – as well as exploring why Schumer has acted with such fealty to the Tech regime. Wrapping up, Dayen assesses Biden’s massive 2021 executive order made up of 72 actions pushing government agencies to take on an understanding of economic competition beyond the impact on prices and consumers, discussing which agencies have actually seen the biggest shift in attitude, and the importance of these types of executive action in bolstering the programs of his anti-trust candidates like Lina Khan at the FTC and Jonathan Kanter at the DOJ, before briefly touching on Pete Buttigieg’s floundering at the DOT and whether that will change. David Feldman also joins as he reflects on Sam’s anti-cooperative work ethic, calls out the gated community that is the Majority Report, and check’s in with Sam’s child, Matt Lech.

And in the Fun Half: Sam and Emma discuss the politics behind the Memphis Police’s quick charging of their fellow cops for the murder of Tyre Nichols, Ron DeSantis asks why the hell the RNC is in DC, the nation’s capital, and Matt Gaetz and Geraldo Rivera bring a tepid fight to Hannity over the debt ceiling debate. They also discuss Project Veritas’ honey potting of a no-nothing Pfizer worker, Adam from Virginia talks to this show (of all shows) about day trading, and Garret from Michigan recommends the work of Nick Turse and discusses giving history teachers the freedom to discuss America’s violent past, plus, your calls and IMs!

Emma hosts Hal Weitzman, executive director for intellectual capital at the University of Chicago Business School, to discuss his recent book What's The Matter With Delaware?: How the First State Has Favored the Rich, Powerful, and Criminal-and How It Costs Us All. Then, Emma is joined by Lee Harris, reporter at The American Prospect, to discuss her most recent piece "Wall Street’s Big Bet on Rewiring America". First, Emma runs through updates on Israel’s continuing violence in the West Bank to start 2023, panic setting in around the debt ceiling, the Supreme Court’s first decision of the term, various states’ attempts to ban transition care up to 26 years old, Peru’s potential impeachment, and DT’s return to FB and IG, before Emma parses through Kevin McCarthy’s attempt to remove Ilhan Omar from the Foreign Affairs Committee and the bigotry behind the process. Hal Weitzman then joins as he dives right into the staggering stats around Delaware’s role as host for LLCs and corporations across the world, acting as the base for two-thirds of Fortune 500s, with thousands of new Limited Liability Corporations being created every day, resulting in a state with 1.8 million corporations to a population of around 1 million people. Next, Weitzman walks Emma through the history behind Delaware’s role as a corporate haven, beginning with Woodrow Wilson’s crackdown on New Jersey’s corporate leniency pushing companies to Delaware, the next closest haven to New York, before they shift the conversation to what makes Delaware so the perfect American version of the Cayman Islands, from its small size (both in population and geography) to its location. Expanding on the conversation, Hal and Emma walk through various elements of this industry known as “the Franchise”, from building an entire legal infrastructure for corporate issues to sponsoring the rapid turnover of entire corporations in a Ponzi-scheme-esque manner and allowing for the anonymous creation of LLCs, all serving to bolster the state’s status-quo – as per “the Delaware Way.” Next, Lee Harris walks through Ithaca’s developing Green New Deal, exploring how Venture Capitalists and Goldman Sachs capitalized on the Inflation Reduction Act’s environmental subsidies by investing in this infrastructure overhaul, taking somewhat legitimate environmental programs and putting the control of profits and energy into the hands of the same for-profit model that created these issues. After discussing the role of Bloc Power, the main Start-Up involved, they walk through the various differences between Ithaca’s Green New Deal (and other small-scale versions) and Bernie Sanders’ original bill, before wrapping up the interview by tackling the various routes through which these corporations are ensuring the infrastructure remains under their control.

And in the Fun Half: Emma is joined by Matt Binder and Brandon Sutton as they discuss Glenn Beck’s takedown of Velma’s new spin on Scooby-Doo, Margaret from PA discusses skullduggery fatigue, and Ben Shapiro compares guns to embezzlement, forgetting that the solution to both is greater regulation and administrative oversight. Nate from NH expands on the gas stove/baby formula debate by walking through the other various unregulated toxins we ingest, and Mark from Buffalo explores the future of America’s two major parties. The A&W Bear has no pants, plus, your calls and IMs!

Sam and Emma speak with Ken Klippenstein, investigative reporter at the Intercept, to discuss his coverage of the World Economic Forum summit in Davos, Switzerland for his newsletter on SubStack. Emma and Sam begin by running through updates on yesterday making another mass shooting in a Californian Asian-American community, the Florida Supreme Court cementing the state’s abortion ban, the split within the Blue Dog Caucus, and the DOJ making Google the next anti-trust target, before diving deeper into the EPA struggling to turn it around since the Trump cuts to the agency, and Ruben Gallegos announcing his run against Kyrsten Sinema in Arizona. Ken Klippenstein then joins as he gets right into parsing through the weirdest takes on the Davos conference in Switzerland, from the “everything they say is right” to the “actually, they’re eating babies there,” before walking through how the conference sets up the appropriate networking opportunities to keep the world economies in line with the neoliberal model, espousing the inflation-blaming and anti-worker rhetoric that has dominated the US economic policy over Biden’s reign as a bellwether for the rest of the West ™. After briefly touching on the conference’s meaningless panel on quiet quitting, Ken, Emma, and Sam walk through Chris Coons’ role as a protectionist dove during a conversation about bringing jobs back to the Americas, exploring what “friend-shoring” entails and why it would be good for way more than just the US. Wrapping up the interview Ken takes on the ingratiation of two horrendous political actors (Henry Kissenger and Saudi Arabia) at the conference, and what that says about who Davos is for.

And in the Fun Half: Sam and Emma discuss Bernie’s upcoming return to his hometown of Brooklyn, the Blue Dogs Caucus splitting over their title (despite the existence of countless other “bipartisan” anti-democracy caucuses), and dive into Ron DeSantis dressing his racism in homophobic clothing. They also discuss the Good Liars’ appearance at the March for Life, Jordan Peterson launching the IDW’s newest educational accrediting grift, and Candace Owens asks us to pray for Crowder straying from god. Mark from Buffalo asks about YouTube’s right-wing, Sophia from Atlanta unpacks anti-immigration talking points, and Crowder continues his attack on the Daily Wire, plus, your calls and IMs!

Sam and Emma host Graham Rayman, criminal justice reporter for The New York Daily News, and Reuven Blau, senior reporter for The City to discuss their recent book Rikers: An Oral History. First, Sam and Emma run through updates on this weekend’s mass shooting at Monterey Park, a former New York FBI agent engaging in money laundering with Russian connections, Biden’s new Chief of Staff, and the GOP’s crackdown on food-based benefits, before diving deeper into the debt ceiling discussion and Joe Manchin’s take on how to undermine social security and medicare without being blamed for it. Then, they’re joined by Graham Rayman and Reuven Blau as they dive right into their work compiling quotes from those within Rikers on every element of life in the detainment center, from those working there to the detainees that are imprisoned, before they step back and explore the institution of Rikers itself, looking at this prison complex as super-detached from the rest of the NY justice system, acting as a pre-trial detention center while playing host to many victims of the justice system that suffer from severe mental health issues, all adding up to Rikers producing higher death rates while also receiving more funding and hosting fewer inmates in comparison to the rest of the New York system. After an in-depth exploration of Rikers jail as a violent quagmire where inmates are stuck for years before they even face trial, Rayman and Blau walk through the last 50 years of Rikers’ development, beginning at the end of the 1970s when the crack epidemic saw New York reinvest in short-term city and state jails on the island, quickly ramping up the population of inmates to around 20 thousand and immediately cementing its role in the New York justice system, despite the infrastructure crumbling within a decade, making the island host to the worst conditions in New York jails which would continue to deteriorate over the next few decades. Wrapping up, they explore the “hidden” role of solitary confinement and the other forms of detainee abuse, and discuss the federal government’s highly critical monitoring of the jail and why it has had little to no impact on its existence.

And in the Fun Half: Sam, Emma, and the MR Crew tackle the arrest of former FBI agent Charles McGonigal, and Sam’s greater half-baked theories of the New York crime world, Tucker goes absolutely ballistic over the idea that conservatives would just be aggrieved for the sake of aggrievement, and Donald Trump’s absurd appearance at Diamond’s memorial (of Diamond and Silk). They also tackle two different Jims struggle with coherent thought, before they’re joined by Kowalski from Nebraska in-studio! Kowalski walks through his first impressions of New York, and the economic developments in the practice of farming over the last half-century, plus, your IMs!

It's Casual Friday! Sam and Emma host Alex Pareene, Contributing Editor at the New Republic and proprietor of the AP newsletter on Substack, to round up the week in news. First, Sam and Emma run through updates on the Supreme Court finally finalizing their investigation into the Dobbs leak, Hochul continuing her self-immolation tour, Trump coming out against cuts to social security, Florida outlawing AP African American studies, and more, also parsing through the coverage of the recent debt ceiling debate, as Nancy Mace pretends to acknowledge the bipartisan nature of government spending (because that’s literally what government is), before totally misunderstanding what goes into the deficit, and why the government must have debt. Alex Pareene then joins as he dives right into this week’s updates on the Supreme Court investigation into the identity of the Dobbs leaker, following up the recent announcement that they’re “narrowing down” the list of suspects by concluding that the leaker could not be determined. Alex, Sam, and Emma walk through the list of possible suspects, discussing why it seemingly ignored the possibility that it could’ve come from a Justice (despite proof of multiple leaks coming from Justice Alito), and why a culpable conservative justice could essentially hold the institution of the Supreme Court hostage, forcing them to choose between covering this up (and suffering minor damage to institutional trust) or being transparent (and completely undercutting any remaining trust of the Court), before capping the SCOTUS conversation by tackling the role of non-judicial legal institutions (law schools, organizations, etc.) and liberal justices in opening up the conversation to a changing role of the judicial branch. Next, they shift the conversation to Hochul continuing her strut down her self-made carpet of rakes as she officially retains a lawyer to sue her DEMOCRATIC-led State Senate, exploring why she’s acting like she has an electoral mandate despite narrowly winning the governorship and largely undermining down-ballot Democratic races, and what the logic behind turning on women’s rights and labor activists could possibly be. They also discuss the greater ineptitude of the New York State Democratic Machine, why Hakeem Jeffries is standing behind Hochul, and the future of the progressive agenda in New York. Wrapping up the interview, Alex, Sam, and Emma discuss Donald Trump’s campaign against cutting social security, how it will affect the GOP’s platform over the next year, and where it will leave Trump’s standing in the 2024 primaries.

And in the Fun Half: Sam, Emma, and the MR Crew parse through Candace Owen’s statements on women as a distraction in the workplace, before getting into a deep dive into the myriad reveals that have come out of the Daily Wire-Stephen Crowder beef, from the levels of revenue at these conservative publications, to their tactic of trolling in public and keeping the severe bigotry behind the paywall, also debating where Crowder’s outrageously poor strategy came from, the potential of a tampering case coming out of this, Crowder’s content mill, and the serious backlash from Daily Wire employees like Candace Owens and Matt Walsh as they go to bat for their employer like the good little guard dogs they are, plus, a sit down with Ben Burgis and Jason Myles of “Give them an Argument” and “This is Revolution,” respectively, ahead of their live show with Left Reckoning this weekend!

Emma hosts Adrian Hon, game designer and CEO of Six to Start, to discuss his recent book You've Been Played: How Corporations, Governments, and Schools Use Games to Control Us All. Then, she is joined by Alex Sammon, politics writer at Slate, to discuss the recent controversy surrounding New York Governor Kathy Hochul's nomination of Judge Hector LaSalle to New York's highest court.  Emma begins by running through updates on the debt ceiling’s summer showdown, election deniers overtaking the house oversight committee, and Hochul’s Chief Judgeship nomination failing to make it through the state senate judiciary committee, before diving into Joe Manchin’s recent appearance at the Davos economic forum as he calls out the debt ceiling while completely ignoring the biggest counterweight to government spending (taxes). Adrian Hon then joins as he dives into what “gamification” entails, with the application of game design in non-game circumstances, be it in education, fitness, labor, or whatever, creating a hyper-monitored system of achievements and failure. Parsing through the impact of the “gamification” of the world of labor, Adrian and Emma walk through the major changes we’ve seen alongside it, including an increased level of surveillance and performance feedback coming in the form of intra-workplace competition, and how this allows employers to set up unachievable “goals” for employees to push their labor while avoiding appropriate compensation. After a brief conversation on the relationship between the “gamification” of labor and the gig economy, Hon walks through the evolution of apps in the 2000s and early 2010s that opened up society so fully to gamification, emphasizing arbitrary achievements as proof of value in a perversion of the already corrupt meritocracy we supposedly live it. They wrap up the interview by focusing on a specific realm of “gamified” labor in the trucking industry, as they analyze how gamification and decades of dwindling labor leverage reinforced the increasing insecurity and decreasing solidarity in the workplace, and explore why these arbitrary systems of tracking achievement don’t serve to increase the effectiveness of the institution it’s serving. Alex Sammon and Emma then dive deep into the story behind Gov. Kathy Hochul’s floundering nomination for Chief Judge of the NY Court of Appeals, walking through how he came to be her first choice, why there was immediate pushback to such a selection, and how Hochul could possibly have seen this as an important fight when it undermines not only her constituents but her own party, before wrapping up with an assessment of Hakeem Jeffries hopping on Hochul’s bandwagon despite this court being the very reason his party lost control of the House.

And in the Fun Half: Emma is joined by Brandon Sutton and Matt Binder as they tackle the release of a gritty retake of our favorite perceptive posse in “Velma,” and Binder gives his absurd take on the rankings of animation houses. They also tackle the issues with AI algorithms (and where they could actually help), discuss Tucker’s newest guest of MLK’s extended family, and talk with Alex from NY. Candace Owens shares her feelings on therapy (interesting, no facts involved), for some reason the crew discusses NFTs in 2023, and Kowalski calls in with his fun-half takes. They also run through updates on George Santos’ absurdly villainous origin story, plus, your calls and IMs!

Sam and Emma host Erika Pinheiro, the Executive Director of the immigrants rights group Al Otro Lado, to discuss the Biden Administration's recent policy updates on immigration into the country. Then, they're joined by Brian Mier, correspondent for teleSUR English and Brasil Wire, to discuss the recent civil unrest in Brazil after Bolsonaro supporters stormed the Brazilian capitol buildings, as well as the presidential residence. First, Sam and Emma run through updates on the game of chicken with the debt ceiling officially starting,  George Santos following up the revelations of his four-figure theft with two committee assignments, the NY State Senate’s fight against Hochul’s anti-choice chief justice nomination, Matt Schlapp’s impending sexual battery case, Maine’s endeavor to protect abortion, and North Dakota’s crackdown on books that discuss anything sex, plus, they parse through Kysten Sinema’ appearance at the Davos World Economic Forum to take on those hyper-partisan fools that are obsessed with democracy. Erika Pinheiro then joins as she dives right into Biden’s supercharging of Title 42, Trump’s COVID immigration policy that shuts off the border to asylum seekers, allowing minimal at-risk migrants through the border over his two years in office. After taking on Title 42 as the only remaining recognition of COVID by the Biden Administration, Sam, Emma, and Erika step back to explore the greater immigration laws surrounding asylum, requiring countries to provide due process and adjudication for any asylum-seeker that sets foot in the country, with the US’ asylum process hinging on a first-come-first-serve structure that largely benefits the wealthier migrants with immediate access to internet and housing. Wrapping up the interview, Pinheiro walks through her thoughts on Mayorkas’ new migrant worker initiative (and the activists that fought for it), the Biden administration’s complete capitulation to far-right pressure on immigration, and why the Democrats haven’t paid a price for this (so far). Brian Mier, Emma, and Sam then parse through the long road that led up to the Brazilian Coup attempt on January 8th, beginning with the DOJ’s 2014 collaboration with a Brazilian District AG in the “Lava Jato” operations that led to the corrupt and illegitimate impeachments and imprisonments of Dilma Rousseff and Lula da Silva, opening the door to the election of Jair Bolsonaro in 2019. Next, they cover Bolsonaro’s presidency, his cooperation with far-right US actors, and his implementation of the GOP’s “Big Lie” blueprint towards the latter end of his reign, leading up to his delay in recognizing Lula’s victory in 2022, his escape from Brazil, and the ultimate invasion in Brasilia earlier this month. After comparing Brazil’s January 8th with the US’ own January 6th and looking at Lula’s much more effective response, Mier walks Sam and Emma through the long-term relationship between the DOJ (and other US institutions) and the Brazilian right wing, with Joe Biden standing against Lula as Vice President, only to do a complete 180 as it became clear that Bolsonaro was a much bigger danger. They wrap up the interview by tackling Brazil’s “Harmony of Human Rights” and how it creates a much different system of rights than we see in the US, Lula’s pitch-perfect response on the day of the coup, and Bolsonaro’s future.

And in the Fun Half: Sam and Emma discuss Kyrsten Sinema’s tense relationship with Democracy, Pete’s impotence as Secretary of Transportation, and Jimmy Dore’s hosting a professional Nextdoor statistician. Spencer from Minnesota calls in to discuss Minnesota’s democratic majority and Gov. Walls’ $12 billion education bill, Rick Allen brings the GOP back to its roots (attacking social security), and George Santos continues to bolster his odds for biggest conservative fraudster of 2023. Stephen Crowder calls out the big con of conservatism (but refuses to name names) and the exploitative contracts that folks like HIM have signed, plus, your calls and IMs!

The MR Crew are back from the long weekend! Sam and Emma host David Enrich, business investigations editor at the New York Times, to discuss his recent book Servants of the Damned: Giant Law Firms, Donald Trump, and the Corruption of Justice. First, Sam and Emma run through updates on the GOP and the debt ceiling, the death toll from Russia’s action in Dnipro, the arrest of a losing GOP candidate in New Mexico, and Israeli protests of Netanyahu’s abuse of the judicial branch, before parsing through why complete different actions by Biden and Trump (involving classified documents) have resulted in different responses from US political institutions. Then, David Enrich joins as he begins to walk through the story of the entrance of lawyers and law firms into the world of advertising in 1977, and how it created the world of financialized, amoral, corporate global law firms that we see today. Stepping back, Enrich then looks to the evolution of the Jones Day law firm as a model of the greater industry, first diving into their work in the 1940s representing a natural gas company in the wake of an explosion in Milwaukee and their emphasis on maintaining integrity and bolstering community trust, rather than fighting tooth and nail to against any reparation as a company would today, before contrasting this with their recent work intimidating and threatening local governments with lawsuits over attempts to ban the sale of flavored tobacco products. Next, David, Emma, and Sam walk through the main justifications for such horrific actions on behalf of corporate behemoths, as these firms hide behind the Constitution’s guarantee of representation for people accused of crimes and shirk claims of greed with pro-bono work, exploring the obvious immorality behind these lawyers’ amoral facade, before taking on two more examples of this growing trend of law firms falling in line with corporate greed, the Texas Two-Step, and Abbott Laboratories’ baby formula disaster. Wrapping up the interview, David walks through the reform he would most like to see, with an emphasis on the ABA, mainstream media’s coverage of law firms, and the exploitative cycle of legal education.

And in the Fun Half: Sam and Emma discuss poverty as a policy choice, Tucker suggests more congresspeople smoke crack on the House floor, and Marc Silvestry of Revere City Council absolutely shuts down some bonkers anti-homeless arguments on the floor. They also cover Sarah Huckabee Sanders’ efficient first few works in office, Jeremy from LA discusses the coverage of psychedelics online, and Nathan from Alabama dives into the Warrior Met Coal strike and comparisons with Glacier North West’s teamsters’ action. Casey from Tennessee has an extended discussion on the South’s relationship to labor and culture wars, and walks through his own evolution from Trumper to Sederista, plus, your calls and IMs!

It's Casual Friday! Sam and Emma host Ryan Grim, DC Bureau Chief at The Intercept, to round up the week in news. First, Emma runs through updates on Merrick Garland’s investigation into the President having access to classified documents, the House increasing member compensation, the LAPD’s killing of Keenan Anderson, and the horrific cost of severe weather events in the US, before she and Sam dive into Kevin McCarthy’s debut press conference immediately devolving to back-to-back conflicting statements. Ryan Grim then joins as he gets right into assessing the start of this term of a Republican-led House, walking through the central components of his concessions, beginning with the return to obsessing about the debt ceiling, before touching on the discharge petition, how it opens the door to Democratic legislation, and who’s relevance in Congress it might increase. They also tackle the likelihood of a social security cut, whether Hakeem Jeffries will push a Stock Trading Ban, the Democrats’ role in GOP committees, and the future of anti-trust and anti-inflation policy, before wrapping up the interview by analyzing the upcoming battle for Dianne Feinstein’s seat.

And in the Fun Half: Emma and the MR Crew discuss the bad faith that goes into anti-vaxxers’ arguments on increases to cardiac arrest and myocarditis numbers, Candace Owens’ takes on hunting Fauci and being a black figurehead for white supremacy, and Louis from Palm springs talks movie recs. James from FT Worth discusses arming teachers, Glenn Beck debunks the globalists’ diet, and Hakeem Jeffries goes the Lin-Manuel route of focusing on platitudes over policies. Matt Gaetz fills in for Steve Bannon to talk with George Santos, and it’s just as wild as you’d expect, and Matt from Seattle discusses updates on the Wizards of the Coast’s (Dungeons and Dragons, Magic the Gathering) attempt to crack down on the creative license to their games, plus, your calls and IMs!

Emma is back for her first Thursday show of 2023! She hosts Neil Vallelly, researcher at the University of Otago in New Zealand, to discuss his book Futilitarianism: Neoliberalism and the Production of Uselessness. First, Emma runs through updates on a second set of classified documents being found at Biden’s Wilmington home, House GOP introducing two anti-abortion bills, Kevin McCarthy’s quid pro quo to obtain the speakership, the NYC Nurses’ strike reaching a tentative agreement after three days, and Barbara Lee’s potential run for Senate in Dianne Feinstein’s seat, before Emma parses through updates on Israel’s apartheid expansion as Bibi Netanyahu’s far-right coalition comes into power, and Rashida Tlaib’s statements on the House floor. Neil Vallelly then joins as he dives right into the inspiration for his book coming out of direct exposure to budget slashes at University, and the impacts they have in driving students into specific realms of study more suited to capitalist endeavors, exploring how the humanities and social sciences are painted as indulgent and useless for occasionally challenging capitalism rather than seeking to serve it. This brings Professor Vallelly to the topic of how different things get constructed as “useless” in our world, following how the emphasis on utility in education came alongside a shift towards privatized and debt-driven universities, thus requiring students to shape their own educational path alongside the universities’ economic projects. Next, Neil steps back as he traces the path from Jeremy Bentham’s theories of utilitarianism to contemporary neoliberalism, first exploring how he came to view money as the objective quantifier of utility, justifying the growing capital accumulation in the world and the growing economic theories of the time, with even the anti-utilitarian theories of the 20th Century, namely Keynesian and Hayekian economics, grounding themselves in this concept of maximizing happiness (whether for the masses or individuals). After tackling how the Friedman-Hayek form of anti-utilitarian utilitarianism won out over New Deal economics, Neil and Emma explore neoliberalism’s separation of the market from “democracy, the greater relationship between enfranchisement and utility, and how nihilism can help us analyze it, before wrapping up by walking through more specific examples of utilitarianism’s impact on neoliberal policy.

And in the Fun Half: Emma is joined by Brandon Sutton and Matt Binder as Matt discusses his time at the CES Tech Conference, and they talk with Bro Flamingo on the NFL and punitive measures against political coups. They also cover updates on Matt Schlapp’s alleged sexual assault, Prince Harry on the relationship between his family and his family jewels, and the Daily Wire’s flunking filmmaking endeavor and the celebs they’re taking down with them. Tony from San Jose calls in to parse through the potential Saudi acquisition of the WWE, with Binder filling in many of the gaps of what led up to this, plus, your calls and IMs!

Sam breaks down the biggest headlines of the day. First, Sam runs through updates on the passing of the new rules package, the reveal that current president Biden has classified documents, Lina Khan and the FTC investigation into price discrimination, and environmental updates on California and our planet’s ozone, before diving into Katie Porter’s announcement that she will be running to take over Dianne Feinstein’s empty seat. Sam and the MR Crew then dive into updates on day 2 of the New York City nurses’ strike, as masses gather to support care workers exercising their labor leverage, and discuss perspectives from Representatives Ilhan Omar and Michael Waltz on the GOP’s platform in the wake of finally electing McCarthy speaker, including the ever-important de-wokification of the US military. They wrap up the free half by walking through the upcoming Supreme Court case Glaciers North West v. Teamsters, how the Supreme Court can use it to try and cripple labor action, and why the US loves requiring labor while not requiring the payment for it, before diving into updates to Biden’s student loan relief, and why it would be a lot easier to just wipe it out.

And in the Fun Half: Sam gives his takes on nuclear power, Tucker Carlson takes on the legitimacy of Glenn’s biggest moment as a solo journalist, and Ben Shapiro walks through his exact equation for a ruler’s legitimacy, which totally has nothing to do with his own impotence affecting the dynamics of the Shapiro household. Krista from Pennsylvania discusses the US’ shift towards theocracy, Guy from Portland Oregon explores the relationship between the courts, NLRB, and judicial activism, and Sam touches on the recent news surrounding one-half of Diamond & Silk, plus, your calls and IMs!

Sam hosts author Cory Doctorow to discuss his recent book Chokepoint Capitalism: How Big Tech and Big Content Captured Creative Labor Markets and How We'll Win Them Back, co-written with Rebecca Giblin. First, Sam runs through updates on Kevin McCarthy finally overcoming his Freedom Caucus brethren to attain the speakership, the Brazilian coup attempt this weekend as well as the hardline responses to it, NYC’s nurses’ strike, and the striking down of more gun control measures, before diving into the Mike Rogers v. Matt Gaetz matchup from this weekend. Cory Doctorow then joins as he dives right into his examples of chokepoint capitalism, first looking to the wildly exploitative contracts of the 20th Century music industry, with mass monopolies by studios forcing artists into exploitative and debt-riddled contracts, only for the digital age and rise of Spotify to push the industry towards a monopsony, with Spotify as the primary purchaser of music, allowing them to force similarly exploitative deals on the same debt-riddled artists. They then shift to the monopsonistic scam run by Audible, as Amazon’s audiobook offshoot took Spotify’s blueprint and added internal lies and scams to bluff authors out of hundreds of millions in earnings, and wrap up that portion of the interview with the advertising monopolies of social media tyrants like Meta and Google. Cory then shifts the conversation to weakening the power of these capitalist chokepoints, where corporations can use the lack of competition to force horrendous contracts and conditions on laborers, focusing on the obvious elements of anti-trust and broader crackdown on anti-competitive practices, as well as pushing big tech interoperability to improve access for consumers and laborers, before concluding the interview with a discussion on the other massive project required: completely overhauling the US system of copyright laws.

And in the Fun Half: Sam talks with Jack from New Jersey about the difference between backlash to the “Never Kevvers” of the Freedom Caucus and the theoretical backlash to the Forced-Vote that never was, Marcus the Brazilian dives into the impact of Bolsonaro’s ambiguous concession speech and the following (lack of) coverage of it, as well as the vast differences to Biden’s response to 1/6 and Lula’s response to 1/8. Kowalski from NB gives major weather updates on California and Europe, and Sam dives into Larry Summer’s recent broadcast from paradise to tout his influence in cementing austerity as a tool of capitalism. Rachel from SF reflects on some good ol’ fasc-ioned racist San-Fran housing discrimination, @Indrid.Cold27 discusses the TikTok scene, and Sam and the crew tackle updates on Matt Schlapp’s alleged harassment, plus, your calls and IMs!

It's the first Casual Friday of 2023! Sam hosts Heather Digby Parton, contributing writer at Salon.com and proprietor of the blog Hullabaloo, to round up the week in news. Then, Sam is joined by Andy Kindler, host of the Thought Spiral podcast! First, Sam runs through updates on the US’ 50-year unemployment low, South Carolina’s Supreme Court rejecting a 6-week abortion ban, and Kevin McCarthy racking up an even 12 losses for the Speakership since Tuesday, now looking to make it a baker’s dozen. He also touches on the accessibility of the new abortion pill in red states, Biden’s new authoritarian immigration policies, and dives into the importance of disallowing non-compete agreements in the fight for labor control. Digby then joins as they dive a little deeper into Kevin McCarthy’s performance on the House floor this week, from pretending not to care about his repeated losses to not even being able to sell out correctly, and discuss parallels to his rise as John Boehner’s heir apparent. Next, she and Sam get into the role that conservative media has been playing in the issue, and whether the Freedom Caucusers will get what they want (whatever that is) from this standoff. Andy Kindler joins next, as he and Sam talk liquor, Ryan Seacrest, and what it's like to be young guns in the comedy world, before parsing through Dave Rubin’s reflections on DeSantis’ nomination, the revealed abuse by Matt Schlapp, Chair of CPAC.

And in the Fun Half: Sam covers the drama of talking about Marjorie Taylor Green acknowledging Jesse Jackson, and Glenn Greenwald cites trusted news source, Joe Rogan. Sam and the MR Crew then parse through two recent mishaps by said trusted news source, watching his and Eric Weinstein’s recent misinformation scandal, and the YouTuber fight that duped him, plus, your IMs!

Sam hosts Clara Mattei, Assistant Professor of Economics at the New School for Social Research, to discuss her recent book The Capital Order: How Economists Invented Austerity and Paved the Way to Fascism. First, Sam runs through updates on Kevin McCarthy entering day three of House purgatory, the FTC banning non-compete agreements from labor contracts, mass tech layoffs, foreign support for Ukraine’s defense, and January 6th revelations, also diving deeper into the Fox crackdown against the McCarthy dissenters. Clara Mattei then joins as she and Sam dive right into the political nature of all economics, walking through the ingraining of social values through economic policy, and the enormous political implications behind any economic model. Next, Professor Mattei turns specifically to the policy of austerity, parsing through how it came to be viewed as a necessary party of our inevitable system of capitalism, disciplining the labor market into its position of exploitation while undermining the possibility of alternative social models. They then tackle the trinity of austerity policies, outlining fiscal austerity’s dismantling of social welfare, monetary austerity reinforcing reliance on wage labor by taking away credit and employment, and industrial austerity’s emphasis on privatization and deregulation to dismantle labor power. After expanding the discussion of undermining labor as a tactic to protect capital, Professor Mattei walks through the role of World War I in inspiring the political elites’ shift to favor austerity, as belligerent nations had been forced to nationalize in the face of war, incidentally exposing wage-exploitation to be a political choice while highlighting the thriving (if smaller-scale) alternative economies – from guilds to coops and councils – and a post-war clamor to re-legitimize their system of capitalist exploitation. This brings them to the pivotal post-war financial conferences in Brussels and Genoa where the capitalist states brought in economic experts touting this new tactic of austerity, framing taking from the many and giving to the few as a mass sacrifice for mass benefits, taking off in European states like the UK and Italy, and setting the stage for a rising fascism that was legitimized by the liberal establishment, and a deeper and deeper acceptance of capitalism via fiscal, monetary, and industrial austerity. Wrapping up, they tie the revelations of the Great War to the revelations we saw in capitalist societies in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic, and the parallels to the ongoing attempt to use inflation to discipline labor, before Professor Mattei walks through the role of Capital Order in helping us unpack our current political moment.

And in the Fun Half: Sam is joined by Brandon Sutton as they unpack Kevin McCarthy racking up his 7th and 8th Ls since Tuesday, watch Hannity go ballistic on Boebert for obstructing governance, and explore whether the Freedom Caucus 20 actually has any semblance of a plan. They also tackle the state-level influx of anti-trans legislation, particularly looking at Montana’s recent SB99, and watch what happens when Laura Ingraham accidentally invites someone who isn’t a total nutjob onto her show to talk sports, plus, your IMs!

HAPPY NEW YEAR EVERYONE! Sam and the MR Crew are back to break down the biggest headlines coming out of the holidays, as well as what's to come in 2023. Sam begins by running through updates on Russia’s expanding drone war in Ukraine, the final releases of the 1/6 Committee, Donald Trump’s tax returns, and the partisan polling behind 2022’s pre-election “Red Wave” narrative, also touching on an insulin cap for medicare. Then, he dives into Brazil’s election of Lula da Silva as President, walking through the mass coalition that elected him (and the countless numbers that showed up for his inauguration), as well as contrasting that with Bolsonaro’s arrival in Florida. Next, Sam and the crew discuss the ongoing House Leadership vote as Kevin McCarthy arrives on the floor, parsing through the various responses to the Freedom Caucus 5’s attempt to disrupt his candidacy and the institutional backlash seen on Fox, also taking on the complete absence of a policy-argument in this challenge, and what the Republican agenda actually is. Wrapping up, they zero in on New York politics, first tackling the continuing revelations around Congressman-elect George Santos, before exploring Gov. Hochul’s nomination of conservative Judge LaSalle, and the coming together of the New York left to collectively reject his nomination.

And in the Fun Half: Sam takes on the continued prevalence of anti-trans issues, even in the wake of this topic’s failure to act as a motivating force over the midterms, discussing Chaiya Raichik’s fear-mongering performance on Tucker Carlson, and tracing her roots back to another fundamentalist cult. Jacob from Alabama discusses the West Rock Paper Mill lockout and the lack of coverage around it, Alan from NC discusses the hypocrisy of the “genital mutilation” talking point, and Tim from Kansas calls in to discuss the COVID-deniers’ heartless response to Damar Hamlin’s shocking accident this weekend. They also tackle the attack on Librarians as a result of the transphobic stochastic terrorism on the right, discuss the ever-prominent fundamentalists and theocrats working for the GOP, and discuss Europe’s place in the movement for trans rights. Ayantu from Massachusetts expands on the recent interview about the Tigray War, the crew gives updates on the vote for Speaker of the House plus, your calls and IMs!
