The Majority Report with Sam Seder

It's Casual Friday! Sam and Emma host David Dayen, executive editor of the American Prospect, and David Sirota, founder of the Daily Poster.

 - MR Live 10/29/21

It's Casual Friday! Sam and Emma host David Dayen, executive editor of the American Prospect, as they walk through as much of the two hundred policies in the Bipartisan Infrastructure framework as possible, and David Sirota, founder of the Daily Poster, joins in the fun half, to discuss his new podcast, “Meltdown” The former David (Dayen) first takes on his summary of why the infrastructure battle was a failure for Democrats, starting with complete mismanagement of expectations of what could make it into the bill, how they imagined their success in making it bipartisan, before he dives into the failure to optimize what they could do as the constraints became more clear. Working into the effects of the Manchin-Sinematic wrecking, David explores the waste of the 1.75 trillion top-line through provisions that include 90 billion for “equity,” and other nonexistent policies, effectively weakening the parts of the bill that democrats, and Americans, actually want. He also covers what could’ve been another use of these “ornamental” provisions, which work to build up the total spending, using their necessity to ensure that Republicans will still pass them, while removing them from the spending equation, including hundreds of billions for anti-trust, privacy bureau, and bolstering fisheries. While recognizing the obvious fault of Democratic leadership, Dayen, Emma, and Sam discuss the role of non-profits in tandem with the progressive caucus and Democratic base in pressuring expectations on the party, forcing a packaging of the entire agenda into a single bill, resulting in practically no lasting structural policy, before they dive into what (or who) has stood in the way of specific climate and pharmaceutical policy, from Manchin’s rejection of penalties for unsustainable energy to the countless Pharma-bolstered representatives that fought back against the government’s negotiating capacity. Next, they move onto the policy put forwards for our children, including universal pre-k and an extension of the Child Tax Credit, alongside the bureaucratizing of childcare provisions to hinder their utility, before they wrap up the interview by touching on the restructuring of Medicare funding and corporate and white-collar taxes.

And in the Fun Half: David Sirota joins Emma and Sam to discuss his upcoming 8 part investigative podcast, “Meltdown,” covering the collapse of the Democratic party in the wake of the 2008 financial crisis, with Obama’s promises and their opposition (his policy) working to undermine faith in our government, as a top-down (emphasis on top, not so much on down) bailout left homeowners struggling for agency, and gave room for a rebirth of the Republican party in the shadow of Bush’s failures, and eventually paved the way for Donald Trump’s election. Emma and Sam also touch on Ben Shapiro’s claim that climate change, the threat of which he has constantly been downplaying for years, is now “baked into the cake,” John Eastman talks representing the rural republicans at the Claremont Institute Gala, and Zuck shows us his metaverse, plus, your IMs!

Emma hosts Eric Rauchway, Professor of History at the University of California, Davis, to discuss his recent book Why The New Deal Matters, on the lessons we can take looking back on that period in US legislative history. Professor Rauchway and Emma first reflect on the laughable comparisons Biden go as the “new FDR” towards the start of his administration, before a discussion of how FDR worked to immediately pass specific tailored legislation that has become so incredibly naturalized that we hardly think about it as social policy, ranging from social security, to our highways and parks. Next, they jump into FDR’s motives for the New Deal, looking at the growing unrest regarding the inaction of government in the midst of the great depression, and the resulting turn towards Right-wing anti-government taking off in Europe, then they discuss FDR’s aim (beyond material benefits) of re-establishing the belief that your government works for you. Professor Rauchway also dives into FDR’s relationship to civil rights, as his social policy worked to bolster indigenous land rights and Black employment opportunities, even though he really did not go out of his way to address racism and white supremacy, before he and Emma also look at the important environmental policy that came out of the New Deal as FDR saw the public relationship to public lands, and the energy we got from it, as central to restoring a feeling of power and political agency to the hands of the people. They also discuss FDR’s relationship to activism, particularly organized labor, as he worked to let workers fight for what they wanted, even with antagonism to his state, and encouraged attempts by organizers to push his policy further to the left. Wrapping up the interview, Eric and Emma take on some of FDR’s unique practices in terms of passing his agenda, before touching on the shadow of the New Deal, with its inspiration of LBJ’s administration, and why we’re overdue for a new coming of New Deal-style legislation. Emma also discusses the complete gutting of reconciliation and Israel’s more recent genocidal replacement policy.

And in the Fun Half: Emma, Brandon, and Matt celebrate one year of EmMajority Report with the masochism of admiring Sinema and Romney’s Ted Lasso cosplay alongside Amazon’s upcoming “Mayor Pete” doc, and Brandon gives his side by side comps of Lasso and Young Sheldon against the magnum opus that is United States of Al. Becky calls in to clarify that anti-natalism is, indeed, against childbirth, the MR crew admires the community-driven solution to punitive criminal justice with Dads on Duty, and Chris from Taiwan discusses his work on Sheila Nezhad’s campaign for Mayor of Minneapolis, plus, your calls and IMs!

Sam and Emma take stock of a big last few days in news, from reconciliation negotiations to the courts, immigration to labor, and more! After giving a little foreshadowing to the discussion on the billionaire tax, they dive into Manchin still floundering in front of climate activists, even when they accost him on solid ground, and Bernie continues to center Medicare expansion in negotiating power and for dental, hearing, and vision. Next, Sam really gets into his flow as he and Emma walk through all of the details of the proposed changes to the tax structure, and what changes Manchin and Sinema are standing in front of, particularly discussing the proposal for corporate minimum tax rate, before they move into the absurdity of Washington’s obsession with “pay-fors,” and the incredible value of a billionaires tax. Then, Emma and Sam run down what is and isn’t in reconciliation, and what has been cut in half; they talk the Child Tax Credit and its single-year extension, the disappearance of free community college, Bernie’s medicare expansions still hanging in limbo, a complete cutting of the expansive paid leave proposal, Manchin’s hindrance of climate provisions and Medicaid federalization, and the halving of housing aid and eldercare.

And in the Fun Half: Mike from Jersey talks paternity leave, Joe Rogan talks paternity leave but poorly, and Ronald Raygun and Sam start to mend their pome-based beef, before Oscar from NoLa calls in for a heavy discussion on immigration, reconciliation, and helping out dreamers. Norris from Pittsburgh calls in to promote his “No Child Left…” policy, Jay from Long Island asks about the NYS Senate ballot proposal, and Charlie Kirk really puts on a show as he tampers the violent tendencies of his base just enough to keep them angry and keep himself away from responsibility. Dave Rubin calls out liberals misappropriating his culture as they call people Nazis, and Sam takes on why, at this point, the Build Back Better plan will not ever be seen as a win for Democrats, plus, your calls and IMs!

Sam and Emma host Benjamin T. Smith, professor of Latin American history at the University of Warwick, to discuss his recent book The Dope: The Real History of the Mexican Drug Trade. They begin by addressing the myth of the Mexican drug trade, built by both US and Mexican authorities around this moral binary of cops and federal agents versus evil Mexican cartel members, birthed, in part, from this image of a Mexican marijuana culture that never really existed outside of prisoners and soldiers, and how these elements worked to reinforce US nativist ideology. Professor Smith then discusses how the drug industries in Mexico did come around, looking at the massive boom in marijuana consumption in the US starting in the 1960s, and the resulting increase in Americans looking to Mexico for their product, before he dives into the role of local governments and police in protecting cartels for a small black market tax, even while the federal government in Mexico and the US brought out more and more punitive measures for drug trafficking. This brings them to the DEA, as they dive into their “divide and conquer” policy of turning cartels against each other and taking out kingpins with relative success working to bolster their war on drugs financially, even as addiction, drug use, and overdoses continue to soar, and they take on the similarities between this war, and the amorphous, never-ending war on terror. Professor Smith, Emma, and Sam wrap it up by looking at the continued development of organized crime as it has moved from the drug trade to more violent industries, and how this has been handled in the transition from Nieto’s policy of “hugs not bullets” to Obrador’s work with the Military during his presidency. Emma and Sam also discuss Mitt Romney’s first pro-immigration stance when it comes to billionaires, and Joseph McCarthy’s white scare of a rumor.

And in the Fun Half: Pep from WA calls in to discuss US immigration and discrimination between US-sponsored vaccines and non-CDC accepted vaccines, Dan from the infertile crescent talks objectivism, Ayn Rand, and what boss you would take to a deserted island. Emma and Sam watch Tucker just get blown away by hearing someone else reiterate his own talking points on the feminization of the US, Jimmy Dore proves that lack of reading comprehension is truly a side effect of not moving past the headline, Rep. Cawthorn gets laughed out of a Dartmouth College Republicans meeting, and Thomas from VA calls in to discuss rampant Right-wing success in the suburbs and local Dems favoring incumbents over party strength, plus, your calls and IMs!

Sam sits down with Marcia Chatelain, professor of history and African American studies at Georgetown University, to discuss her recent book Franchise: The Golden Arches in Black America, on McDonald’s, fast food franchises, and their ties to the success and failures of Black capitalism. Professor Chatelain discusses how McDonald’s came to occupy a state-like role in Black communities following the assassination of Martin Luther King Jr., becoming the face of economic stability and occupation, and even acting as a community center. Starting in the 1960s, she and Sam trace McDonald’s rise from an up and budding suburban fast-food chain, to a central element in civil rights organizations’ shifting strategies following a period that centered nonviolent action and socialist vision, looking also at this tactic of jumping into communities in discord as a form of disaster capitalism. Next, they jump into the role of the Nixon administration in really solidifying this revolution, as he centered his small business loans to franchise owners as a revolution for the Black community (despite his other policies regarding these communities) and take on the passing of the torch from MLK to Ralph Abernathy as the head of the SCLC and what it meant for their tactics. Entering the ‘70s, Marcia explores how McDonald’s found rampant success in Black communities, yet questions began to arise about how much that actually affected the community members, as well as the remaining discrepancies in the treatment of Black versus white franchise owners, before she and Sam discuss the ’80s and Reagan’s role in solidifying these elements. They wrap up the interview by moving back to the present, as Professor Chatelain discusses her disappointment in the resurgence of this “Black-owned business” based tactic, reflects on the continued discrimination against McDonald’s franchises owned by Black people or in predominantly Black areas, and explores the three faceted strategy of free college, Medicare for All, and free child care that she sees as the best accessible solution. Emma also dives into the reconciliation bill that is definitely just down the road this time we promise, and Biden’s commitment to his “nothing will fundamentally change” proclamation.

And in the Fun Half: Alex from NY talks MAGA infiltration and gives his fight club matchups, Teak from Salt Lake promotes DSA stamps, and Emma and the MR crew discuss Glenn Youngkin’s recycling of decade-old culture war attack ads for CRT fear-mongering, before looking at the “Free Kyrie” protest outside the Barclays Center this weekend. Little Mack calls in about limited libertarianism and repercussions for Manchin, a Fox interviewee’s “Epstein didn’t kill himself” inspires a discussion on the importance of looking into conspiracy, and a CSPAN white-collar caller asks the bold question “what if workers didn’t deserve fair pay in the first place?” Plus, your calls and IMs!

It's casual Friday! Sam and Emma host Dave Weigel, national political correspondent for the Washington Post, as they walk through how the Democrats are approaching the midterms (and what the voters think). Dave, Emma, and Sam jump into how the infrastructure and reconciliation failures are being read by voters, discussing how candidates are bringing it up on the campaign trail, why the average voter sees legislative hold up as evidence of policy failure, and why, despite their inability to emphasize its importance, Democrats should see Republican critiques failing to stick as a success. They also cover Biden’s falling approval rating, and the perspective of people who’d really hoped he would bring back at least some sense of normalcy coming out of COVID. Next, they jump into the Republican culture war shifting the battlegrounds into the schools and the spotlight onto the children, with their aim taking on critical race theory, trans rights, and school-based vax and mask mandates, and look at the VA McAuliffe v. Youngkin race as a key example of how Dems can, or cannot, handle this fight.  This brings them to discuss how Democrats are utilizing Trump in the run-up to 2022 midterms, the importance of fear in generating midterm turnout, how they’re capitalizing on 1/6, and they wrap up the interview with a summary of the different tactics Republicans and Democrats are taking into next year. Emma and Sam also discuss the state of reconciliation heading into next week and Biden’s performance on the CNN town hall last night with Anderson Cooper.

And in the second half Sam and Emma are joined by Jason Myles, co-host of the This Is Revolution podcast, as they dissect his Medium article, “I Was a Teenage Anarchist," on the growth of the punk movement around the concepts of authenticity and deconstruction, how that hindered its growth and ability to alter the mainstream, instead, setting it up to be absorbed by the machine, and what that can teach us about the state of the online left today. They also touch on the marketing of anti-capitalism, from Parasite to the Joker, and what it means to be a “sellout.” Emma and Sam wrap up the fun half with Rachel Hamm’s claim to her prophetical witch hunt, Jim Jordan’s objection to protocol, plus, your IMs!

Emma hosts Rupa Marya, Associate Professor of Medicine at the University of California, San Francisco, to discuss her recent book Inflamed: Deep Medicine and the Anatomy of Injustice that she co-authored with Raj Patel, on the socioeconomic roots of poor health, and the colonial seeds that brought about this issue. Professor Marya begins by defining inflammation for us, looking at it as a response to damage or threat of damage, from response to impact, virus, student debt, or intergenerational trauma, before they dive into the connections between the ideologies of modern medicine and colonization, particularly in the uses of separation and atomization – including the mind-body dichotomy, people versus nature, and white folks versus indigenous peoples – and in how they were set up in union, with medics, missionaries, and militaries leading the charge. Next, they jump into the capitalist nature of our medical system, looking at how the influence of lobbyists, the drive for efficiency, and the leverage of debt are all central to the modern medicine experience. Professor Marya and Emma then move back to the more physical repercussions of the atomization of colonial capitalism, discussing the impossibility of treating COVID at home while letting it run rampant in the Global South, before moving on to the book’s blueprint of walking through the inherent interplay between all elements of our anatomy, from our cardiovascular system to brain functioning to the microbiome in our gut. They wrap up the discussion by looking at the exploitation of the environment and workforce as a representation of the clear need for societal restructuring as the diseases of capitalism become worse and worse, and the need for new infrastructures of care become direr and direr. Emma also touches on Tim Kaine’s status as majority leader of empathy as he connects with Rahm Emanuel on the pain of governing a police force that murders your constituents, and not doing anything to stop them.

And in the Fun Half: Emma, Brandon, and Matt(s) cover a teacher’s audition for Bari Weiss’s Substack, Chuck from Indiana calls in to ask our celebs about para-social relationships, and Andrew from Greensboro talks about the hypocrisy of elite wellness critique. Kowalski gets his well-deserved celebration as he enters his 28th year of life, Seb Gorka doesn’t understand the concept of paternity, Dave Rubin defends comedians as the martyrs of truth and also the reason why Netflix should fire their trans employees, and Katt Williams talks about the importance of boundaries and the failures of comics who can’t deal with them, plus, your calls and IMs!

Sam and Emma host Carl Lindskoog, assistant professor of history at Raritan Valley Community College, to discuss his recent book Detain and Punish: Haitian Refugees and the World's Largest Immigration Detention System, to discuss his recent book Detain and Punish: Haitian Refugees and the World's Largest Immigration Detention System, on how the US’s treatment of Haitian refugees worked as the blueprint for their immigration detention system today. Professor Lindskoog starts back in the ‘50s, around two decades into a period of intensely discriminatory immigration policy, banning immigration from practically anywhere that isn’t in western Europe, when the US decides to suspect their policy of immigrant detention, building up to the 1965 decision to do away with their national origin quotas in the midsts of the Civil Rights Movement. Next, however, he covers the racist backlash to both the movement as a whole and these immigration policies as, beginning in the ‘70s, the US saw an influx in Haitian migrants that worried representatives (unlike anti-communist Cuban migrants who bolstered the US image of Cuba), spilling over in the summer of 1980, as the US responds by reasserting immigrant detention, building up their private-prison complex as they start incarcerating more and more folks, both foreign and native-born. He, Sam, and Emma dive into the policy of the Reagan administration that worked to bolster this, including quarantining and expelling Haitian refugees with HIV/AIDS, followed by George H.W. Bush’s opening of the Guantanamo detention center, originally just for Haitian refugees, before touching on the neoliberal responses under Clinton, as he reinstalled President Aristide following a military coup under the requirement of subscription to neoliberal policy, and Obama, as he upheld detentions – save for a short period following the 2010 Earthquake. They wrap up the interview with a discussion on the history of organizing and direct action by Haitian refugees in jails and detention centers, before touching on Biden’s failure to make our current immigration system even more slightly humane.

And in the Fun Half: Emma and Sam cover Jeff Fortenberry’s disillusionment with the CIA now that they’re investigating him, Jennifer from Seattle talks radicalization in personal relationships, Dan from CA talks cancel culture in the MR chat, and Peter Doocy doesn’t quite realize that COVID is an issue of public safety. The MR team also covers NYPD anti-mask tendencies, Connor from Worcester gives updates on the nurse’s strike, Hannity and Meghan McCain discuss being bullied by the liberal elite, and Tim from Minneapolis talks focusing on the small scale to remain optimistic, plus, your calls and IMs!

Sam and Emma host Kate Crawford, Research Professor at the University of Southern California Annenberg, to discuss her recent book Atlas of AI: Power, Politics, and the Planetary Costs of Artificial Intelligence, on our relationship with big tech, and the concept of the AI industry as a continuation of the extractive practices and power dynamics in the workplace that we have been building for centuries. They start off with a discussion on how Professor Crawford got into AI, and how her perspective on it has changed, from the view of the industry as one defined by algorithmic capacity and data infrastructure to an industry of extraction and exploitation, jump-started by diving into the stages of production from lithium mines to Amazon fulfillment warehouses to labs. Getting into the abstraction and depoliticization of artificial intelligence, Professor Crawford explores how Big Tech has become perhaps the most concentrated industry since the railroads, hiding behind an ideology of technocratic utopianism that has built a fear of regulation, a consolidation of power, and a growing perspective that it is essential to our way of life. Next, she, Emma, and Sam dive into the relationship between AI and labor practices, looking at the hyper “efficiency” created by workplace algorithms (e.g. at Amazon warehouses) as a revolutionary progression of Frederick Taylor’s factory ideology, and exploring how this disembodied management serves to hamper organizing, particularly with the effect of the bias to believe technology. They then move onto the importance of highlighting the overlap of the surveillance state and corporate surveillance, this creation of a multi-headed hydra, and why the American public only sees the state as a threat, before expanding on the surveillance apparatus are already working to reinforce power structures that have exceeded regulation, looking particularly at the Police state and counter-terrorism measures. They wrap up the interview by discussing the future of regulation in the industry and the impact anti-trust measures could have (and why that won’t be enough). Sam and Emma read some Majority Reporter updates on the mass unionization efforts going on in the US, and discuss Manchin’s posturing with Bernie (physically).

And in the Fun Half: Nomiki Konst joins Sam and Emma as they cover the New York democratic machine getting blindsided by a democratic socialist woman of color taking on an established incumbent, inspiring Chuck Schumer to take a break from politics, Chris Leal for TX House District #114 gives some updates on his campaign, and the MR crew discusses the judgments of Meghan McCain in the workplace for simply acting the part she’s paid for. They also cover the silencing of Bari Weiss with her free airtime on CNN, Dan Bongino’s poor connection in the Glenn Greenwald telephone game, plus, your calls and IMs!

Sam and Emma host Heath Brown, associate professor of public policy at the City University of New York (CUNY), John Jay College, and the CUNY Graduate Center, to discuss his recent book Homeschooling the Right: How Conservative Education Activism Erodes The State, on the rise of homeschooling policy in the US, how it relates to public education, and the impact it has had on national politics. They discuss the institutionalization of homeschooling beginning in the 1970s as a seed of the conservative movement we see today, stemming from 1974 West Virginia protests of new textbook policy incorporating the work of civil rights leaders like Malcolm X which brought out support from established conservative organizations like the John Birch Society and the Ku Klux Klan, and new ones like the Heritage Foundation, all looking to bolster the right to opt-out of the “indoctrination” of public schooling. After discussing the roles of key conservative activists, such as Alice Moore and RJ Rushdoony, and how the movement has bolstered the fundamentalist perspectives that we see in the push against Critical Race Theory we see today, Professor Brown dives into the differences we see between the homeschooling movement, which took off in the ’80s bolstered by conservatives, and the movement for charter schools, which has found continuous bipartisan support since the ‘90s, both in how they found support, and in their organized opposition, which exists against charter schools and their financial implications for normal public school institutions. He, Emma, and Sam also explore the progress that has bolstered the institution of homeschooling, particularly in the growth of technology and the internet, before looking at its influence on conservative activism and organizing, from Homeschoolers for Bush to even Ted Cruz’s 2016 campaign. They wrap up the interview by discussing the demobilizing capacity of undermining public institutions, and Sam and Emma also take on the bloody legacy of Colin Powell and run through recent updates on the IATSE strike, vaccine development, and Joe Manchin.

And in the Fun Half: Adam Kinzinger grapples with loving the game (democracy) but hating the players (voters), Matt from CT calls in to talk alternative COVID treatments and NOT Joe Lieberman, Gregory for Oklahoma's HD-26 calls in with updates on his campaign, and Jesse Watters does some word salad on that mysterious, unidentified ruling class in early America (white folks). Steven Crowder capitalizes on the homophobia from Matt Walsh and Tucker Carlson to help bolster his super legit masculinity, plus, your calls and IMs!

It's Casual Friday with a very special guest! Sam and Emma host Congresswoman Ilhan Omar of Minnesota's 5th District, whose recent book, This Is What America Looks Like: My Journey from Refugee to Congresswoman, is out in paperback now! Representative Omar, Sam, and Emma take on a variety of issues central to the progressive cause as the Biden administration has begun to falter. They begin with key issues on immigration and refugees, as Ilhan Omar touches on the shameful continuation of Trump policies under Biden, particularly exploring the treatments of Afghan and Haitian refugees and the Biden administration’s reliance on Title 42, taking on also why he has failed to stick to this campaign promise. Next, they move to the topic of student debt relief, as Congresswoman Omar dives into the mysterious missing memo that stands as the only thing preventing Biden from putting pen to paper with an executive order, and what could be behind the delay, before they jump to the topic of the reconciliation platform and how debt relief may or may not fit in. She, Emma, and Sam also dive into the discussion around reconciliation spending, why a shorter span on funding is easily okay by progressives if Sinema and Manchin will just clarify what they would like, and explore the developing role of the progressive caucus. They also touch on the legitimate ideas on both sides of the Holocaust, as per Texas’s new education requirements that an "opposing" view be taught regarding the once in a century atrocity.

And in the second half, Sam and Emma are joined by members of the International Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees (IATSE) union David McMahon (Local 52) and Fae Weichsel (Local 600) to discuss the recent developments regarding their strike authorization.

Then Sam and Emma are joined by comedian Ben Gleib to discuss his recent dust up with Charlie Kirk! They run through the highlights of his very calm discussion with Charlie Kirk, including Kirk’s anger and confusion regarding human anatomy, American citizenship, and what his role is within the right. Sam and Emma also touch on talking horses and John Deere, taking on the solidarity we’re seeing all across the nation with this string of labor strikes, and Lindsey Graham doing some Republican-talking-point MadLibs on the wealthy Brazilian terrorists coming into our country, plus your IMs!

Emma hosts human rights lawyer Katherine Todrys to discuss her recent book Black Snake: Standing Rock, the Dakota Access Pipeline, and Environmental Justice, on how far the fight against DAPL has come even as it’s faded into the background of the media cycles. Todrys first discusses how she first came to human rights, environmental issues, and working with Indigenous communities, before jumping back to 2016 when this 3.8 Billion Dollar project was first announced as a plan to carry hundreds of thousands of barrels of crude oil each day along the Missouri River and through sacred and occupied lands of the Standing Rock Sioux reservation. After a small discussion on the dependence created by pipelines, they get into the birth of this mass water protection effort, with young folks from the Cheyenne River reservation coming off of the Keystone XL Pipeline protection effort working with the Standing Rock community to fight back. Next, Katherine takes us into the history of the land and the US’ occupation of it, with no official agreements since treaties in the mid 19th Century, looking and how this specific land was claimed by the US Army Corps of Engineers as a part of the Pick-Sloan Act’s dam creation, flooding and devastating certain areas of the region. She and Emma also dive into the importance of LaDonna Brave Bull Allard, a Standing Rock Sioux member that hosted the camps, which reached 10k people, on her land and gave everything to the fight, before also touching on the Sioux peoples’ “prophetical” view of the fight. Looking at 2016, as the camps were growing, they discuss labor day as the marker of when the battle changed, with private security bringing in dogs and taking much more violent tactics, building up to the North Dakota Police Department using “non-lethal” violence. They look at the incredible trauma from psychological and physical abuses, and the incredible resilience from the water protectors, seen in the Tiger Swan intercept leak, and discuss the developments since Obama’s “goodbye” attempt at interference, including the 2020 federal judicial declaration of the permit’s invalidity, before they discuss what the Biden administration could do, and what activists are doing for it. Emma wraps up the free half with another update on the wave of labor organizing we’re seeing across the country, and the importance of remembering the fights against the filibuster and for the PRO Act.

And in the Fun Half: Emma, Brandon, and Matt(s) watch Alex Berenson and Joe Rogan chat about the spectrum of politicians that appear on Tucker Carlson, from the far right Bret Weinstein to Islamophobic imperialist Tulsi Gabbard, Chuck from Alabama talks convos with coworkers, and Warren from Toronto takes up Brandon’s ear regarding lifting on the Left. Michael Schermer defends Thomas Jefferson by reminding us of the recency bias when it comes to condemning pedophilia and master-slave relationships, Kyrie continues to Kyrie, and Daves, from Jamaica and Evanston, respectively, call in with their own stories on vaccine hesitancy, plus, your calls and IMs!

Sam and Emma host New Yorker contributor Eyal Press to discuss his recent book Dirty Work: Essential Jobs and the Hidden Toll of Inequality in America, on the moral division of labor and the emotional burden of getting by for countless Americans. They start off with Everett Hughes’ essay “Good People and Dirty Work” and how the unconscious mandate that faced the Germans under the Nazi regime was not only unique to that time or place, but that countless other places, the US most certainly included, have morally questionable state-sanctioned action taken beyond the public consciousness. Eyal explores how he took this concept into today’s America, looking at positions such as corrections officers, slaughterhouse, and oil rig workers, as well as diving into the labor behind the US’s drone program. After touching on the similarities and differences when it comes to policing, and the cultural support behind it, he, Emma, and Sam dive into the story of Harriet, a mental health worker in the Florida prison system, and the abuses of her patients that she had to see and hear under threat of retribution by the guards if she reported it, working up to the death of Darren Rainey in 2012. While nobody in power was punished, of course, Press looks towards Bill Curtis’s analysis putting the fault, ultimately, on the Florida voters that elected Rick Scott and a government with a platform of expanding the prison population while cutting all funding for mental health. Next, they move to look inside both a poultry slaughterhouse and oil rigs, exploring how the distaste by society for labor that is absolutely necessary for it to function as it helps to obscure the horrifying conditions in which that labor takes place, exploring the meat processing industry’s majority women of color and immigrant workforce and the BP Deepwater Horizon oil spill which resulted in the deaths of 11 workers. Lastly, they go from the private to governmental sector as Eyal takes on the emotional turmoil of officers behind the US’s Bipartisan drone program and pawning off of the gore and horror, disassociating it from the elite in power and the public eye. They wrap up the interview by discussing the central role American Capitalism and Imperialism play in this moral division of labor, and the ingrained nature of the exploitation of workers even onto the emotional level. Sam and Emma also touch on the incredible moment in labor organizing that we are currently in, before discussing the behind-the-scenes horrors facing school board members taking the brunt of the astroturf anti-mask movement.

And in the Fun Half: Charlie Kirk gets just absolutely schooled by Ben Gleib on literally just knowing what a human is, a caller discusses VA Beach’s inability to get its police under control to the point that it's affecting tourism, and Will from Cincinnati discusses the David Shor piece on popularism and the Democrats’ multi decade-long commitment to not getting anything popular done. Laura Ingraham and Raymond Arroyo work to desexualize children’s toys by making AIDS jokes, Chris from Mass takes on the cognitive dissonance in the hunting and conservationist communities, and Lauren Windsor asserts herself as one of the best intelligence agents that doesn’t work for an oppressive regime, plus, your calls and IMs!

Sam and Emma host Keisha Blain, Associate Professor of History at the University of Pittsburgh, to discuss her recent book Until I Am Free: Fannie Lou Hamer's Enduring Message to America, on how Hamer’s long life led up to a final decade and a half of incredibly influential activism. Professor Blain walks Emma and Sam back to the 1920s and the first years of Fannie Lou Hamer’s life, growing up on a sharecropping plantation in Mississippi where she was confronted with, beyond the labor abuses of the plantation, constant racial violence, exploitation, and coercion of her community. Specifically, they reflect on the explicit mob violence she saw with the lynching of tenant farmer Joe Pullum, alongside the general poverty and hunger that plagued those around her, before Keisha dives into the breaking point that set up Fannie Lou’s eventual dip into non-violent action; her forced sterilization at the hands of a white doctor supposedly removing a tumor. Following this incredibly traumatizing experience, Hamer eventually heard talk of a Student Non-Violent Coordinating Committee (SNCC) meeting at her local church, at which the public abuses of her community, and their unconstitutional nature, are crystallized for her. Next, Professor Blain brings Emma and Sam along Hamer’s life as an activist, organizing for voter registration, from workshops to actually attempting to register in the face of civilian and police brutality, and arrest, just sixty years ago, and they work their way up to her speech at the Credentials Committee in Atlantic City which had even President LBJ on his heels. Keisha then walks through the influence of Hamer’s activism today, looking particularly at the story of Breonna Taylor and Kate Young’s use of social media to force the mainstream media to acknowledge her name. They wrap up the interview by touching on Fannie Lou Hamer’s consciousness around the use of class and poverty to reinforce white supremacy, and looking at how her role as a key civil rights activist is obscured through the whitewashing of history. Sam and Emma also discuss the Right’s commitment to the pro-COVID stance.

And in the Fun Half: Emma and Sam discuss the brand new 2010 Republican talking point on the Democrats’… dismantling of Medicare? They cover the confirmation of the Boogaloo Boys’ classic leftist organizing tactic of actively sowing chaos, shooting up buildings, and committing arson to undermine leftist protests, touching on the slow and steady replacement of election officials in the shadow of the Right’s “Big Lie” as well, before Bro Flamingo fittingly calls in to talk cults. Charlie Kirk talks Senator Schumer’s kinks, Jay from Chicago discusses the de-normalization of Obama’s violent administration, Matt Walsh and Emma share some misinformation on extinction events, and the crew covers some updates from the Kellogg's strikes. Emma also gets on the record regarding the NFL and Jon Gruden, plus, your calls and IMs!

Sam and Emma host historian Roxanne Dunbar Ortiz, to discuss her recent book Not A "Nation Of Immigrants": Settler Colonialism, White Supremacy, And A History Of Erasure And Exclusion.

Sam and Emma host historian Roxanne Dunbar-Ortiz, to discuss her recent book, “Not A ‘Nation Of Immigrants": Settler Colonialism, White Supremacy, And A History Of Erasure And Exclusion,“ on the settler-colonial roots of the US and the impossibility of obscuring them, no matter how much liberals push the “melting pot” ideology. They start off with the coining of the term “nation of immigrants” by Senator John F. Kennedy in ’58, which was quickly adopted by the liberal US elite during their ‘60s fad of multiculturalism, and the status of which Biden has restored on the White House immigration page following Trump’s removal of it. To help emphasize the meaninglessness of this term, Dunbar-Ortiz helps define what a “settler state” is, and how the US has always been one; they start with the British origins of settler-colonialism and the replacement of local and indigenous peoples in Northern Ireland, before the empire moved on to New Zealand, Australia, Canada, and, of course, North America. While colonialism had existed since Columbus’ first arrival in the western hemisphere, the settler state brought about a new form of it, different even from the enslavement and exploitation of local peoples and resources engaged in by the Spanish, and saw the migration of Brits to new lands, while still claiming wholeheartedly their citizenship status to the British Empire. From a start that could not be more contrary to the concept of a  “melting” of cultures, Roxanne, Emma, and Sam then dive into the nature of the US as a Fiscal Military state, made for and by war, as they laid claim to “property rights” across the world via militia, before they move to reflect on the connections between the myth of Columbus and the Americanization of white immigrant populations, and the cultural perception of whiteness that drives American ideology. She particularly looks into the birth of an explicitly racist warfare ideology during the Spanish Inquisition, ingraining this blood quantum view of whiteness into a certain Christian ideology, and touches on how the legacy of Columbus reaches back to the first founding of the US, with the District of Columbia, and continues to be central in the history of Americanizing foreign white folks. Sam and Emma also discuss the absurdity of pretending to care about Columbus Day, and watch the Bobby Jindal-funded Black-Box Republican-Theater-commercial that aired during this weekend’s Red Sox-Rays game.

It's Casual Friday! Sam hosts Heather Digby Parton, contributing writer at Salon and proprietor of the Hullaballoo blog, to wrap up the week in news. Sam and Digby jump right into the completely meaningless victory of the debt ceiling raise that Schumer and Dem leaders are pushing in the hopes to overshadow the complete stall out of Biden’s Build Back Better agenda, with the only real political result being another one of countless Republican hissy fits over how Democrats treat them. However, they also cover what we learned from the debt ceiling “fight,” including Biden finally admitting the filibuster is dead weight while Manchin is willing to completely bullshit to protect it, and take a step back to discuss the complete ineptitude of Schumer and Democratic leadership in failing to find a single way to sway Manchin or Sinema to the point that “fringe” politician Bernie Sanders has had to step in. They also touch on the generally undemocratic nature of the Senate and how that emphasizes the dire and impending need for Democrats to do literally anything for Americans in need with an impending midterm. Next, they jump to the unabashed good that is bullying Senators who put their feelings ahead of their constituents, before they take on the recent leak regarding Donald Trump’s attempted coup through the DOJ, as well as the Republican Party’s unsurprising brush off of the reveal of this murder-suicide pact. Sam also dives in with the MR team on the Democratic Leaderships’ self-congratulations for this punt of a vote, as well as touching on vaccination and vaccine approval updates.

In the second half: Sam is joined by Judy Gold, host of the Kill Me Now podcast! Sam and Judy touch on all of Today’s most central political issues, such as the quality of a Peloton membership, and Judy talks about the return of the comedy world under COVID (both in-person and via zoom). And in the Fun Half: The MR Team also discusses the continued judicial corruption in Steven Donziger’s case against Chevron, Sam gives a lesson on the debt ceiling, and they chat about the Right’s response to the DOJ probe into threats against school board members enforcing mask use, including Fox & Friends’ call for the ever easy financial decision to switch to private schooling. They also admire Vernon Jones, whoever that is, defending himself against Stew Peters, whoever THAT is, regarding past anti-white discrimination, plus, your IMs!

Emma hosts writer Alex Hochuli, co-host of the Aufhebunga Bunga podcast, to discuss his recent book The End of the End of History: Politics in the Twenty-First Century that he co-authored with George Hoare and Phillip Cunliffe, taking on the establishment and breakdown of complete neoliberal hegemony over the last three decades. Alex and Emma situate our current moment at the end of decades of neoliberal consensus that have failed to give us the tools to comprehend actual contestation over what society should look like. Jumping back to the ‘90s and George H.W. Bush, they explore the birth of the neoliberal world order in the shadow of the end of the Cold War, built on complete hegemony in the West, and complete submission to hegemony for the rest. They take on this view of neoliberal politics and globalization as a “force of nature,” rather than policy choices, with the few forms of counterculture focused on carving out their own spaces in society rather than genuine social change. Hochuli then looks at the 2008 financial crisis as the breaking point of a building lack of confidence and disillusionment of neoliberalism and capitalism, and the response of Occupy as an important movement of the left from taking on a minoritarian approach to speaking for and with the 99%. However, the return of politics came without the tools to understand and analyze our moment as it built towards the victories of Trump and Brexit (among other right populist wins), resulting in a complete breakdown of the neoliberal media and elites, focusing on conspiracy theories about Russia rather than actually dealing with the rejection of neoliberal hegemony. Next, they touch on cultures of anti-politics (“oh they’re all corrupt”) and how the neoliberal hegemony and supposed “end of history” gave political disgruntlement no place to go, before Alex dives into the case study of Brazil over the last decade or so, with their 2013 uprisings for social policies actively being detached from party politics, and giving rise to a complete distrust of democracy and politics in favor of judicial and technocratic rule, ultimately seeing the election of Bolsonaro. He and Emma jump from this back to the US and our handling of COVID, looking at Biden’s presidency as a form of technopopulism, giving Trump’s agenda a professional sheen while actual policy discussion is drowned out by culture war. Emma also takes on Manchin’s hypocritical “entitlement society” objections, as well as Bernie’s pitch-perfect response.

And in the Fun Half: Brandon runs through his official review of the “comedy” (term used loosely) of cultural miscommunication that is CBS’s “the United States of Al,” and he, Emma, Matt, and Matt discuss the passing of the “spectre of dickishness” from AZ Senator to AZ Senator as Sinema finally responds to questioning by only correcting her designation as a “Congresswoman.” Antoine from LA calls in about the difficulties of discussing leftism with a close victim of the Khmer Rouge, Yang and Tucker bond over their exploit-hate relationship with the immigrant workforces, and Zach from Missouri calls in regarding his unsuccessful attempts at converting his anti-vax mother. They also discuss Ben Shapiro, from his “cultural” race science to his inconsistent bowel policies, Hamish from Tahoe takes on Emma “Veganland” (not a vegan) and her vegan-superiority-complex, plus, your calls and IMs!

Sam and Emma host Mark Joseph Stern, staff writer at Slate, to discuss the new Supreme Court term, and what it holds for the justices and the country at large. Dialing in on three upcoming cases, Mark, Emma, and Sam explore how the upcoming term could see a complete deconstruction of reproductive rights, the administrative state, and any attempt at gun control legislation, now that the swing vote lies in Justice Kavanaugh’s lap. Starting with Roe v. Wade, they dive into Mississippi’s challenge to the viability rule, and why, despite MS’s attempt to prohibit abortions past 15 weeks, the Court calling their legitimacy into question no matter what likely will encourage them to dismantle Roe in general, rather than slowly dicing it up. Next, they move on to AHA v. Becerra which puts the Chevron Doctrine and Administrative State on the chopping block. First, Mark takes the time to explain what this doctrine actually is, allowing Congress to delegate the specific regulatory numbers to the relevant agencies, whether it be the EPA determining the PPM limit on Mercury in the Air, OSHA writing health regulations in the workplace, DHHS working to set drug prices, or literally any other element of the executive branch’s ability to administrate. The last case they cover is New York State Rifle & Pistol Association Inc. v. Bruen, which seeks to expand the 2008 ruling of DC v. Heller that redefined the Second Amendment to apply to individuals, rather than militias, working to move the right to concealed carry into the spotlight. Mark, Emma, and Sam also dive into how Trump’s and McConnell’s focus on the district and circuit courts, not to mention SCOTUS, has given the Republican agenda a perfect route to judicial implementation, before wrapping up the interview with a discussion on the few options for Democrats to prevent the judicial branch’s infringement on democracy. Sam and Emma also touch on the developing Kelloggs strike, as well as Biden’s sudden turn on the filibuster now that keeping the legitimacy of the debt ceiling has come into the fold.

And in the Fun Half: The MR crew reflects a bit on the absurdity of the coercion of abortion patients by the state, including translating electrical frequencies to audio and forcing the patient to listen, and Jeremiah from Tennessee discusses the role of adoption in the abortion debate, before Ronald Raygun and Sam get into a debate over the reproductive capabilities of… apples. Sam, Emma, Matt, and Bradley then admire the production that is the Progressive Anti-Abortion Uprising’s new commercial that takes on the redistribution of oppression from actual oppressed people (Black and Brown folk, Trans folk, etc, etc) onto the TRUE oppressed class (embryos). They also touch on the self-destructive capacity of the Democratic party, and discuss the importance of anti-trust law and valuing Elizabeth Warren in this fight. Sam from Indiana wraps up the show with a weird debate on individual rights, bodily autonomy, and gun ownership, plus, your calls and IMs!

Sam and Emma host Aaron Kleinman, director of research for the States Project at Future Now, to discuss the upcoming elections in Virginia and how they serve as a testing ground for how the Democrats can get out the vote in the upcoming midterms. First, Aaron, Emma, and Sam dive into the recent revelations in the VA legislature, as for the first time in decades they’ve had a majority that genuinely acts to help people, passing bills bolstering voting rights, expanding school breakfast and lunch, capping insulin prices, and generally serving to improve the lives of Virginians. They also walk through the state of the Right in VA, as the Big Lie and Critical Race Theory have seriously energized their base, with a member of the Big Lie legal team likely to win a seat in the House of Delegates. Looking forward, Aaron explores the similarities we can see and the lessons we can learn from Gavin Newsom’s success in the CA Recall and the value of negative partisanship, discussing the importance of capitalizing on Trump ties while still centering actual issues and policy platforms, and exploring the role of Democrats on a national level in setting the narrative heading into both these VA elections, and the 2022 midterms as a whole. Lastly, they cover the recent revisions on redistricting and what they suggest about the future blueprint for the Republican Party, before they cover actions we can take to help bolster the democratic candidates running in key VA elections. Emma and Sam also cover the disgusting bully of Sinema by constituents attempting to speak with her despite not donating massive amounts to her campaign, and touch on Facebook’s social media monopoly in the shadow of yesterday’s whistleblowing and their six-hour outage.

And in the Fun Half: Nomiki, Emma, and Sam discuss the inappropriate actions of activists that have been accosting Sinema and Manchin without first donating five figures as well as Joe Biden’s response, before they take on the dog-whistling behind the emphasis on “means testing,” and explore how Biden has been responding to Manchin and Sinema’s undermining of his agenda. They also touch on the debt ceiling, Dave Rubin’s off-brand Tucker Carlson shtick, the FBI’s raiding of the NYPD Sheriff's Union office, and the horrendous handling of refugees and immigration by the Biden Admin, plus, your IMs!

Sam and Emma host Max Chafkin, features editor and writer at Bloomberg BusinessWeek, to discuss his recent book The Contrarian: Peter Thiel and Silicon Valley's Pursuit of Power.

Sam and Emma start off by taking a look at Kyrsten Sinema's interaction with organizers from LUCHA Arizona before she went to hide in a restroom, as opposed to engaging with them directly, as well as the disparity between the outraged reaction to the video and the video itself. Sam and Emma are then joined by Max to discuss Peter Thiel, the "contrarian posture" that's animated his life and his investments, as well as how that informed his interactions with Gawker, Facebook, and PayPal. Max discusses whether Thiel should be considered a "good investor", despite betting against the future, leaning in so far into his contrarian sensibilities that he accurately predicted the 2008 financial crash but botched his hedge fund investments afterwards, leading directly in to him transitioning the fund into a family office, as well as directly into his conflict and legal action with Hulk Hogan against Gawker. Max then details Thiel's "small" nest egg of $1 million that served as the basis for his wealth acquisition, as well as his appetite for competition when it serves him, as well as his absolute distaste for it when it doesn't. They then dive into Thiel's relationship with former President Trump, as well as his pet project of railing against "PC culture", a phenomena that he believes is the animating force of American politics. They then end on Thiel's interactions and partnerships with Glenn Greenwald (who, in fact, Thiel's company Palantir spied on years ago), JD Vance, and the new social media platform Rumble, and how Thiel's investments in these people and companies are symbolic, and that one can draw real comparison to Thiel's political project and that of the Koch brothers: transforming a section of the Republican Party through significant financial investment.

Sam and Emma are then joined by David Dayen, executive editor at The American Prospect, to discuss his recent scoop "USPS Begins Postal Banking Pilot Program" as well as his report from last Friday "The Progressive Caucus Wields Power". David begins by outlining the parameters of this new postal banking pilot program through USPS, and how, if fully implemented, this program could significantly aid "unbanked" and "underbanked" people who fall prey to predatory banking schemes as a result of a lack of access to financial services. He goes on to explain the uneasy peace between Trump USPS holdover Louis DeJoy and the USPS union, who, on this one particular issue, are aligned on working toward implementation for its potential for revenue growth for the USPS (DeJoy's interest), as well as for expanding the services of USPS to people who really need them (the union's interest). David then explains whether further implementation will require additional Congressional approval (maybe so, maybe not), how Biden should prioritize a pro-postal banking advocate for a Board of Governors vacancy that remains, the Congressional support this policy already has, and what full implementation would really look in the long term. Sam, Emma, and David end on their discussion of the Progressive Caucus showing its might in blocking the bipartisan infrastructure bill from going to a vote away from the two track structure, the history of the CPC when it was a 6-person working group started by a young anonymous backbencher named Bernie Sanders (I-VT), Pramila Jayapal's ascendance in the ranks of the CPC leading to its growing power, and whether more of these stands may result in the future as a result of this one's success.

And in the Fun Half, Sam and Emma correct the record on Senator Blumenthal's Finsta flub from Thursday, and propose that the next Big Tech "disruption" should be these companies being broken up by the government. They then check in on the Facebook whistleblower report from 60 Minutes last night, Nick Clegg being referred to as a "tobacco executive" on CNN by Brian Stelter (which he tries extremely hard to differentiate from, with middling results), Fox and Friends's incredible concern about the labor shortage before Christmas (it's October! Steve Doocy can't get his favorite coffee! A fate worse than death!), and the MR crew ends the day by taking a time machine to 2010 to see what Kyrsten Sinema's thoughts on reconciliation and the filibuster were then (Different!) Plus, your calls and IM's!

It’s Casual Friday! Sam and Emma host Ryan Grim, Washington D.C. Bureau Chief at The Intercept, to wrap up the week in news. Emma, Sam, and Ryan dive right into yesterday’s developments with infrastructure and reconciliation as progressives successfully prevent the vote on the tiny infrastructure plus bill, re-centering the conversation back to the fact that Joe Manchin and the moderates are backing out of a preexisting agreement, and leveraging the self-importance of the Senate. They also touch on the role of Kyrsten Sinema’s daring refusal to play by Senate rules by… being successfully lobbied by those against the budget bill, as well as looking at the positive signs in terms of her still acting in good faith in negotiations. Turning back to progressives, Grim discusses how they finally came to use their leverage after decades of taking half-assed deals, looking at how the strength of the CPC, particularly in alliance with swing-seat Dems, has changed drastically since the Obama years, and he, Sam, and Emma take on the differences between progressives leveraging their power on this as opposed to the movement to Force the Vote on M4A. They wrap up the interview by looking at how things might move forward, with the debt ceiling vote also hanging in the balance, before Emma and Sam admire the work of activists in pulling Manchin back down to Earth from “Almost Heaven.”

And in the second half: Sam and Emma are joined by David Feldman of The David Feldman Show as they discuss his small-government, Ayn Randian approach to Marxism, the neediness of progressives in negotiations, and the intoxicating misogyny of Jimmy Dore. Plus, David gives a spiel on Bernie Sanders’ overwhelming kielbasa. In the Fun Half, Sam and Emma also touch on the continued injustice of Steven Donzinger’s case as the private lawsuit against him continues, Martha MacCallum reminds us that even kids have to make a living if they want to live, and Senator Blumenthal reminds Sam that he’ll never lose his youth. They also touch on the incredible pressure applied by a college student on Kamala Harris regarding the Iron Dome funding, plus, your IMs!
