The Majority Report with Sam Seder

Happy Friday! Sam has a full slate to help recap the week's top headlines, including, Chris Hayes, David Roth, and Matthew Film Guy! Chris Hayes returns to the Majority Report for his first appearance in three years to discuss the Senate impeachment trial, Alan Dershowitz's absurd defense of executive power, and what lies ahead for senators up for reelection in purple states. Then, David Roth, formerly of Deadspin, is back to spread the word about the new Unnamed Temporary Sports Blog, which will publish the blogs the Deadspin writers couldn't after they resigned en masse last fall. Finally, Matthew Film Guy shares photos from Sundance Film Festival, where he did everything but go to film screenings.

And in the Fun Half: John from San Antonio shares the latest polling and delegate counts in the Democratic primary, Donald Trump never discussed Biden corruption before the former Vice President launched his 2020 campaign, Trump's lies about farmers like he lies about any marginal group, an ER doctor tells Mike Pence that block grant Medicaid will hurt patients, right-wing Jewish family members, Jimmy Dore doesn't do his homework, Pam Bondi struggles during the question period of the Senate impeachment trial, manufacturing consent amongst capitalists, plus your calls and IMs!

Happy Thursday! Michael Brooks is back to host the Majority Report and is joined by Meagan Day to discuss her recent pieces in the Jacobin“How to Clean Up the Welfare State” and “Joe Biden’s Checkered Ethical History Is Fair Game for Criticism.”

Michael and Meagan begin their conversation discussing the importance of door-knocking before your state’s primary. Meagan recounts her conversations with potential voters in California and how she discovered most voters are undecided, and organizers can have a significant impact on persuading them. Michael and Meagan go on to consider the Democratic primary and what the two frontrunners, Biden and Sanders, would look like matched up against Trump. Meagan points out that Trump has been giving a lot of attention to “Crazy Bernie” on the stump. She welcomes a 2020 election that centers whether or not it’s “crazy” to provide healthcare to all, climate justice, and other human rights. To Meagan, there’s a clear distinction between Trump and Bernie’s record on corruption and advocating for working people.

Conversely, Meagan argues, Biden does not offer such a clear difference between himself and Trump. She and Michael layout Biden's record of corruption and his efforts to reform social security. Biden's history makes him an easier target for Trump in a general election and would reinforce the impression that there's little distinction between the two candidates and not bring people to the polls. Michael and Megan conclude their conversation addressing the perception of the American welfare state and how expanding universal programs would help strengthen support for it.

And in the Fun Half: TBT Biden's history of plagiarism, Bloomberg ads on MR videos, Klobuchar's damaging DA history, Jared Kushner and Netanyahu have no respect for the human rights of Palestinians, the utility of leftists appearing on Fox News programs, notes from the ground in Iowa, Bloomberg's NDA silencing, Big Gay Ice Cream is the best, plus your calls and IMs!

Happy Wednesday! Sam  breaks down the latest headlines including the rash of anti-Bernie op-eds and ads landing just days before the Iowa Caucus. The arguments put forth by Jonathan Chait and David Frum fail to recognize the reality of the 2020 election and that its focus will center Donald Trump and defeating him. Their belief that Bernie Sanders is a uniquely unelectable candidate is unfounded for a variety of reasons all of which Sam explores in today's episode.

And in the Fun Half: reports from the Women's March in North Carolina, Kowalski defends the military budget in theory, the White House says Bolton's book contains top secret information that can't be revealed, some boots-on-the-ground reporting from Iowa, Libertarian Corn Pop calls in, Ronald Raygun explains the new Public Charge laws, college admission changes, Mindy's ex-husband loves Joe Rogan and will vote for Bernie,  plus your calls and IMs!

As the Senate impeachment trial of Donald Trump continues into its eighth day, Sam is joined by historian Brenda Wineapple to discuss the impeachment of Andrew Johnson and her latest book, The Impeachers: The Trial of Andrew Johnson and the Dream of a Just Nation

On today's show: March 2018: Lou Dobbs excited to welcome John Bolton back to White House. Lou Dobbs last night: John Bolton is a tool for the "radical Dims and the deep state."

Historian Brenda Wineapple joins us to discuss the impeachment of Andrew Johnson and her latest book, The Impeachers: The Trial of Andrew Johnson and the Dream of a Just NationWith the assassination of Abraham Lincoln, his VP Andrew Johnson became an unlikely successor to the president widely credited with ending chattel slavery in the US. Johnson then proceeded to use his executive powers to oppose many aspects of Reconstruction, pardoning rebel leaders and defying the will of Congress. Wineapple examines this history, from how Johnson ended up as Lincoln's VP in the first place, to his use of executive power to uphold white supremacy, to the precedent set by the Senate's verdict not to remove him from office. This history seems especially relevant in light of current events.

On the fun half: Country singer John Rich tries to stop a school from teaching about white privilege. Chris Matthews says Bernie wouldn't stop his car to help an average person. Counterpoint: Woman in wheelchair recounts how Bernie helped her avoid getting hit by a car. Steve Rattner on the need for a viable centrist to stop Sanders. Rattner says there's a lot of activity to stop Bernie. Pete Buttigieg, with a straight face: "Polls show I'm the best candidate to take on Trump." Buttigieg remembers Kobe Bryant's excellence on the basketball field. Ben Shapiro says Bernie would've aligned with USSR (hence Nazis) in WW2. Jay Sekulow's brother Jordan, 37, is drunk on TV. Sean Hannity says conspiracy to commit murder is not a crime. Pete Hegseth says the 21st century is 25 days old. Josh from Chicago gives an on-the-ground report re: canvassing for Bernie in Iowa.

Happy Thursday, Michael Brooks hosts Paul Heideman to discuss his latest piece in the Jacobin, "The Third Way is the Past. Socialism is the Future," which tracks neoliberalism's failures, particularly its rejection of the left, and why Democratic Socialism is on the rise. Michael and Heideman begin their conversation tracing the history of Third Way politicians, keeping it limited to parties that had a history aligned with social democratic policies. Heideman highlights programs like federal block grants as a policy change that pared back the welfare state and allowed states to divert funds away from the people and to partisan political projects which functioned to open the free markets. Michael and Heideman shift gears to the UK and Tony Blair's failure to maintain power after his blunders through the Iraq War alongside the marketization of the NHS and education policy in parliament. Heideman argues that Third Way politics in England imploded because New Labor had to own the Iraq War, while the Democrats could blame Republicans for our Mid East blunders. Third Way politics in America have eroded slowly during the Obama presidency after the 44th president's limited bailout reforms and growing wealth inequality. And while Clinton's loss in 2016 seemed like Third Way's demise, it may last a few years longer if Joe Biden can win in 2020. Michael and Heideman conclude their conversation considering why socialism is the best antidote for a runaway capitalist system controlled by oligarchs.

And in the Fun Half: continuing the question of racism's core, useful tips for Bernie phone-bankers, Jim Messina says Bernie is the least electable Democratic candidate, Amy Klobuchar gets the much-coveted Comedy Writers endorsement, a look back at Bernie's consistency, TBT: Jim Messina's homophobic political ad from 2002, a clip of Michael's Lula interview, Zoe Lofgren makes a salient point--we need transparency in government, the Fox & Friends audience do not care about impeachment at all, plus your calls and IMs!

On today's show: Chris Coons is setting himself up to be a power broker, block progressive agenda. Donate to his primary challenger at jessfordelaware.com! On the fun half: Sam and Jamie speak with a surprisingly reasonable libertarian. Happy Tuesday! Author and organizer Jane McAlevey joins Sam to discuss her new book,  A Collective Bargain: Unions, Organizing, and the Fight for Democracy, on how workers must continue to fight with broad-based supermajorities across the working class. McAlevey and Sam begin their conversation discussing the state of labor organizing in America during the Trump era and the recent progress of teacher unions across the country. McAlevey explains how Collective Bargain differs from her previous books and the need to reeducate the working populace on unions and their common misconceptions. McAlevey contextualizes the benefits of unions through Silicon Valley labor practices. She describes how tech become a new arena for organizing in 2020, where forced arbitration agreements leave workers with very little agency over their labor or workplace environments. There is no way around collective organizing if tech workers want to change their company's culture--it cannot happen in a top-down system. Beyond one's place of employment, looking at the state of the judiciary system and the campaign finance laws, the best (and possibly only) tool working people have in our society is to organize with strategic strikes that shut things down in the streets. That is how workers will win in a post-Trump era.

And Nomiki Konst joins Sam for the Fun Half to discuss: Trump's grief over Notre Dame, the 'Middle Class' Joe fallacy, even Tom Brokaw recognizes it, Bernie's ground game in Iowa as the Senate Impeachment trial begins, why the Senate Dems resent Bernie, AOC on challenging the Democrats status-quo and fighting for public programs, the stupidity of the NYT split-endorsement, Protestors are frustrating Pete Buttigieg, former Breitbart lackey Kurt Bardella does not speak for everyday Democrats, plus one call from John in San Antonio!

Happy Friday! Digby and Judy Gold join Sam and the MR Crew to discuss the top stories of the week, including the Lev Parnas revelations, impeachment heads to the Senate, and the breach of the Sanders/Warren non-aggression pact. Starting with *The Story*: Sam and Digby agree that the Sanders and Warren story is new, but it certainly does not deserve the amount of coverage provided by the media. Consider the fact that we were on the brink of war last week, and the president's impeachment trial will begin next week in the Senate. Meanwhile, the revelations from Lev Parnas' document dump shed new light on the Ukraine scandal and the interactions between Giuliani and his Ukrainian oligarch contacts. Digby and Sam go through all the players and key figures involved in the Ukraine quid-pro-quo. Finally, as impeachment moves to the Senate, Digby and Sam consider the limited press access permitted by Mitch McConnell and why Chuck Schumer isn't railing against the leader's decision.

Then, Judy Gold joins Sam and asks how the hell can Ken Starr and Alan Dershowitz possibly be working for the White House in 2020? Judy is at the end of her rope--Democrats need to win the White House back this fall. She's had enough of these assholes in the GOP. They conclude their conversation considering the reasons for having children.

And in the Fun Half: the Saga of American Action Network's "Stacy," John from San Antonio wonders if Elizabeth Warren is angling for a Biden VP spot, low information voters and Chris Hayes' classic TNR piece from 2004, Devin Nunes tries out a dozen lies about his relationship with Lev Parnas, while Donald Trump and Rudy are in the same boat, and if they're going down, they're going down together.

Sam is joined by education writer Robert Pondiscio to discuss his latest book How the Other Half Learns: Equality, Excellence, and the Battle Over School Choice. Matt Binder joins us to host the Fun Half.

On today's show: Sam on the Bernie Sanders/Liz Warren post-debate exchange.

Sam is joined by education writer Robert Pondiscio to discuss his latest book How the Other Half Learns: Equality, Excellence, and the Battle Over School ChoiceSam and Pondiscio discuss the author's year embedding at Success Academy, one of New York's most contentious charter schools: his experience there, the ideas behind public charter schools, and what made Success Academy perform so highly. Sam asks: What about the fact that charter schools attract students whose parents are more motivated and engaged in their lives? Doesn't that skew the results, and maybe disadvantage kids whose parents are not as engaged? A spirited back and forth.

On the fun half: More Bernie/Warren analysis. Chuck Schumer on why he'll vote no on USMCA: it doesn't contain environmental protections. NYT questions Buttigieg on his role in downsizing, Canadian bread price fixing scandal. Kowalski on the inspiring possibilities of American farmers protesting for a Green New Deal.

On today's show: Friday: Mike Pompeo continues to shift story about "imminent threat" intel.

Sam is joined by Peter Jan Honisberg, professor of law at the University of San Francisco School of Law, to discuss his new book, A Place Outside the Law: Forgotten Voices from Guantánamo. How many people are still imprisoned at Guantánamo Bay and how/why the US has a base in Cuba. The narrow circumstances under which the Bush admin would release detainees. How the US purchased its prisoners. The heartbreaking stories of the Guantánamo prisoners, loved ones, and whistleblowers. The torture tactics used on prisoners. How whistleblower Matt Diaz unmasked violations of the Geneva Convention. The invention of the term "enemy combatant." Mark Esper equivocates on Trump's claim about the embassies being targeted. Joe Biden at Brookings in July 2003: we need to go to Iraq and stay there for a long time. Biden endorses "prevention doctrine" in support of preventative wars.

Happy Friday! On today's show, Benjamin Dixon (@BenjaminPDixon), host of the Benjamin Dixon Show. Sam and Ben begin their conversation considering the conclusion of the "Clinton Investigation," which will end in the coming weeks "with no criminal charges or other known impacts," according to the Washington Post. Switching gears to material and present issues, Dixon and Sam switch gears to the Congressional proposals from Elisse Slotkin, Barbara Lee, and Tim Kaine aimed at limiting the White House's military powers. The two then describe the tick-tock of how the Trump administration further destabilized US diplomatic relations in both Iraq and Iran after using faulty intelligence to deploy rash military actions. These developments alone are grounds for impeachment. With that in mind, McConnell's decision to endorse legislation that would dismiss articles impeachment means nothing; Pelosi can send new articles based on this week's actions alone. Considering the stakes in the Senate, where has minority leader Chuck Schumer been in all of this? Dixon and Sam conclude their conversation reflecting on billionaire ad spending in the 2020 election and Steyer's massive leap to 15% in the latest South Carolina Democratic primary poll.

And in the Fun Half: some positive veganism, ending the Hillary Clinton DOJ investigation once and for all, Sam agrees with Trey Gowdy's assessment that impeachment will hurt vulnerable GOP senators, Trump is back out on the campaign trail to sell the Suleimani assassination, Biden's history shows he's stuck in the era of bipartisanship and cutting social services, plus your calls and IMs!

Happy Thursday, Michael Brooks is joined by Djene Bajalan to discuss the state of affairs in the Middle East and the United States' history of interference in Iran. Starting in 1953, Brooks and Bajalan discuss the CIA's role in removing Mohammed Mossadegh from power. Mosadegh was a staunch nationalist whose primary goal in office was to nationalize Iran's oil reserves, which at the time was under the control of the British Empire. Bajalan takes a broader view of Persia before the 1950s and Mosadegh's rule and the region's history with reclaiming its natural resources before foreign powers who were colonizing or warring in neighboring areas. Brooks and Bajalan also explore the Shah's role in disposing of Mossadegh and the monarchy's interests and its intersection between both domestic needs and international pressure. Bajalan then describes the developments which led to the overthrow of the Shah in 1979 and the coalition between Iranian leftists and Islamists leading the revolution behind the Ayatollah's rise. Bajalan and Brooks conclude the interview discussing the Iraq-Iran conflict of the 80s, Iranian President Mohammad Khatami's efforts to improve relations with America in the 90s, and the contemporary state of affairs between the US and Iran.

And in the Fun Half: Pence pushes the "sources and methods" defense as reason for not sharing any intel to Congress, Rand Paul and Mike Lee on yesterday's inadequate intel hearing from the White House, KT McFarland and Pete Buttigieg give boths sides of American ahistorical understanding of Islam and Iran, considering the Elizabeth Warren's campaign heading into the Iowa caucus, addressing the real concerns of anti-semitism from within the Jewish community, on providing healthcare to undocumented immigrants, plus your calls and IMs!

Happy New Year! The MR crew is back to catch you up on the headlines of the past ten days. Sam opens 2020 with a look ahead of what to expect from the Majority Report before the November's general elections, including live coverage of debates, the Iowa caucus, and Super Tuesday. In Washington, while Pelosi and McConnell remain at loggerheads with impeachment proceedings, vulnerable Republicans in purple states are hedging on a "no witness" trial. Meanwhile, Democrats in red states are standing their ground and publicly supporting a full trial in the Senate. Switching gears to the 2020 campaign, Sam looks at a Biden clip from a recent speech in New Hampshire where the former Vice President shares his feelings on running on a split ticket with a GOP running mate. Looking at the broader 2020 Democratic field, the crew breaks down Andrew Yang's commitment to Medicare for All, which doesn't offer something as meager as a public option. Sam closes out the free half of the show analyzing how Trump's "maximum pressure" campaign against Iran functions as war hawk virtue signaling.

And in the Fun Half: Mindy gets the first call of 2020 and wants to talk about Bernie's fundraising! Exploring the relationship between Bernie and MSNBC "road warrior" Vaughn Hillyard, a question about animal ethics puts Sam "in a bit of a corner," seems like Mike Bloomberg doesn't remember the Central Park Five and their lawsuit he fought while NYC Mayor, Ivanka Trump gets a holiday fluff interview on Face the Nation, Sam explains his Twitter back-and-forth with Norm Ornstein, plus your calls and IMs!

Matthew Blackwell (@Matt_Blackwell), Associate Professor of Government at Harvard University, joins us to discuss his co-authored book, "Deep Roots: How Slavery Still Shapes Southern Politics."

Why do certain parts of the US seem to be particularly "conservative" when it comes to race? "Behavioral path dependence" and the effects of institutions on behavior. How the growth of US slavery centuries ago still affects politics today. The linear relationship between the increase in enslaved people in an area to current racist political attitudes today: The more the whites were outnumbered by slaves, the more racist they became. The extreme reaction by white southerners to emancipation. The persistence of racist attitudes that originated during slavery and emancipation/reconstruction.
