Sam hosts journalist and Type Media fellow Sarah Posner to discuss her new book Unholy: Why White Evangelicals Worship at the Altar of Donald Trump. Posner and Sam dive deep into the network and culture of Evangelical Christians that extends way beyond the pulpit in 2020, including its robust media ecosystem, conferences, newsletters, and art. From an outsider's perspective, it seems that Donald Trump is our least religious president ever. However, Posner describes the story of Trump's relationship to televangelists, notably Paula White, whose prosperity gospel preaching style resonated with Trump. But how did the majority of evangelical churches and leaders come to endorse and embrace the Trump campaign? Posner says the evangelical grassroots loved Trump and mobilized behind his campaign, after which the church leadership fell in line. Sam and Posner breakdown why the evangelical base loved Trump so much so early on. The base saw Trump as a wrecking ball that could demolish the liberal state they believed to be a threat to their religious liberty. Sam and Posner conclude their conversation considering the religious right's role in the judiciary and the religious leaders in Trump's cabinet, including Mike Pence, Mike Pompeo, and Bill Barr.

And in the Fun Half: how the progressive left will challenge the center, Trump's behind in polls but he has the beautiful boaters, a heartbreaking story from Dallas family that denied covid's existence, Dave Rubin continues to sink, plus your calls and IMs!

The Majority Report returns this week as Sam hosts journalist and author Colin Woodard (@woodardcolin) to discuss his new book, Union: The Struggle to Forge the Story of United States Nationhoodon how 19th-century intellectuals forged the myth of national unity.

On today's show: Steve Mnuchin says WH won't use taxpayer money to let people stay home. Mnuchin says it wouldn't be fair to pay people to stay home while others have to work.

Journalist and author Colin Woodard (@woodardcolin) joins Sam to discuss his new book, Union: The Struggle to Forge the Story of United States Nationhoodon how 19th-century intellectuals forged the myth of national unity. What "the United States" means to its citizens has never been a given, inspiring various actors to try to impose their version of a unifying national myth onto this vast and diverse nation-state. Woodard tracks these competing visions, including that favored by 19th century historian George Bancroft, which posited the US as a project blessed by God to spread "freedom" across the continent, as well as the explicitly ethno-nationalist vision favored by people like Woodrow Wilson in the KKK era.

On the fun half: Ted Cruz says Democrats only want to extend unemployment benefits to beat Trump in November. Jake Tapper asks why Trump hasn't used Defense Production Act to improve testing turnaround, Giroir says "it's not magic.” Jesse Watters has nice things to say about Qanon during interview about tech censorship with Eric Trump. Ben Shapiro says empathy is bad for politics. Sam hosts Princeton historian Julian Zelizer to discuss his new book, Burning Down the House: Newt Gingrich, the Fall of a Speaker, and the Rise of the New Republican Party.

Zelizer and Sam begin their conversation with Newt's unconventional upbringing, including his marriage to his high school math teacher. Plus, his early entry into elected office and his pragmatic politics morphed into a career centered on partisan power. Zelizer explains how Gingrich set out to reshape and take back the House through anti-establishment rhetoric against the Democrats in the House for the first time in 42 years. Sam and Zelizer consider the effectiveness of running against "corruption" in Washington and the example of Speaker of the House Jim Wright. The two compare and contrast the GOP's unity and the Democratic party's disconnect and how it impacts each party's ability to legislate. And finally, Zelizer and Sam conclude their conversation investigating whether or not the parties have moved on from the Gingrich era of political power.

And in the Fun Half: Trump demands schools reopen, Stephen J Gould recommended reading, Brian Kilmeade doesn't understand how Fox has abetted the COVID crisis, Tucker Carlson says masks don't prevent the virus's spread in July 2020, Tucker Carlson's white supremacist head writer, runoffs in Texas, why Elizabeth Warren won't deliver the youth vote for Biden, Trump saved the US oil industry, plus your calls and IMs!

Stephanie Kelton (@StephanieKelton) joins Sam to discuss her new book, "The Deficit Myth: Modern Monetary Theory and the Birth of the People's Economy." To those who favor a robust welfare state bolstered by generous federal spending, "how are you going to pay for it?" is an all-too-familiar rejoinder. But what if that question were irrelevant? In her latest work on modern monetary theory, or MMT, Kelton lays out the case for a new understanding of money and taxes that could free up the federal government to disregard the deficit in service of the public good.

Frank Smyth joins Sam to discuss his new book, "The NRA: The Unauthorized History." The NRA is one of the three most powerful lobbying groups in Washington, DC, consistently opposing restrictions on gun ownership and enjoying a mutually beneficial relationship with Trump and the GOP. But it has not always been this way. In this book, Smyth traces the history of the organization, from its surprising roots in post-Civil War New York City, to the "Cincinnati Revolt” of 1977 that changed its political direction, to the rabidly reactionary force it is today.

Greg Mitchell joins Sam to discuss his new book, The Beginning or the End: How Hollywood―and America―Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb. In 1945, multiple Hollywood studios set out to make films about the advent of the atomic bomb — including one written by Ayn Rand. In this book, Mitchell tells the story of how President Truman and the military successfully pressured Hollywood to drain these films of all critique, revealing how the government molded culture into propaganda in postwar America.

And for members: Sam talks with late journalist Michael Hastings on Stanley McCrystal.

How Rising Inequality Distorts the Global Economy and Threatens International Peace. While "trade wars" are often thought of as countries competing against one another to protect their workers' interests, they are largely conducted on behalf of elites. In this book, Pettis examines how globalization impacts inequality and spurs international conflict, as well as what we can do about it.

The historic origins of the India-China border dispute going back to colonial times and followed by the Cold War. How the US-China conflict has affected India's relationship with the US. US efforts to keep both India and Pakistan as strategic allies in the region, particularly in the post-9/11 era as the US has sought hegemony in the Middle East. Sam hosts historian Federico Finchelstein (@FinchelsteinF) to discuss his new book, A Brief History of Fascist Lies, why fascists regard obvious and often hateful lies as truth, and why so many of their followers have believed the falsehoods.

On today's show: Laura Ingraham says Biden will raise statues of Colin Kaepernick and Stacey Abrams.

Sam hosts historian Federico Finchelstein (@FinchelsteinF) to discuss his new book, A Brief History of Fascist Lies, why fascists regard obvious and often hateful lies as truth, and why so many of their followers have believed the falsehoods. The differences between fascists' lies and lies told by normal politicians. What is "populism" and do left- and right-wing populism have anything in common? Is Bernie Sanders actually a left-wing populist? The substitution of a charismatic leader for "the people," and who "the people" are to figures like Trump and Bolsonaro. The connections between fascism and capitalism.

On the fun half: Chris James pranks conservative radio show as "Steve," an angry cop from Idaho. TUESDAY: Fauci opening statement, fears sharp rise in Covid infections. Texas Lt. Gov Dan Patrick says he won't listen to Fauci and his science, doesn't need him anymore. Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis says he's not slowing state's reopening, says it's not the reopening that's causing the surge, it's all the activities people have done. Tucker says GOP is the only institution "open to the rest of us" who want to live peacefully. Tucker says our current elected officials abandoned the middle class, your children's generation is worse off than you. Brian Kilmeade says withdrawing from Afghanistan would not be an "apt reward" for 19 years of war. Mitch McConnell warns Democrats about changing legislative fillibuster rule. Brian Kilmeade says NYers "gonna get a taste" with a (not really all that) reduced police force. Who will be Biden’s VP pick?
