2383 - Newt Gingrich, the Fall of a Speaker, and the Rise of the New Republican Party w/ Julian Zelizer
Sam hosts Princeton historian Julian Zelizer to discuss his new book, Burning Down the House: Newt Gingrich, the Fall of a Speaker, and the Rise of the New Republican Party.
Zelizer and Sam begin their conversation with Newt's unconventional upbringing, including his marriage to his high school math teacher. Plus, his early entry into elected office and his pragmatic politics morphed into a career centered on partisan power. Zelizer explains how Gingrich set out to reshape and take back the House through anti-establishment rhetoric against the Democrats in the House for the first time in 42 years. Sam and Zelizer consider the effectiveness of running against "corruption" in Washington and the example of Speaker of the House Jim Wright. The two compare and contrast the GOP's unity and the Democratic party's disconnect and how it impacts each party's ability to legislate. And finally, Zelizer and Sam conclude their conversation investigating whether or not the parties have moved on from the Gingrich era of political power.
