Good Thursday morning, today's show features a recent interview Sam recorded with journalist Stephen Kinzer about his new book, Poisoner in Chief: Sidney Gottlieb and the CIA Search for Mind Control. Kinzer and Sam begin their interview with a brief history of Allen Dulles and Sydney Gottlieb's obsession with mind control, which each man thought was essential to counter-intelligence during the Cold War era. Kinzer believes Gottlieb was one of the most powerful and unchecked government officials of the 20th century. Gottlieb was a quirky character who lived an alternative lifestyle at home, milking goats, studying Buddhism, but was carrying out psychological torture experiments under the CIA MK Ultra program; experiments that were reminiscent of Josef Mengel's work for the Nazis. Kinzer and Sam go through specific tests Gottlieb performed on unsuspecting subjects and what happened to the victims. Ultimately, Gottlieb discovered that extreme psychedelic drug overdoses could not produce mind-control, nor did it work as a truth-serum. That in mind, Kinzer posits that Gottlieb's MK Ultra tests are the dark prologue to future US torture programs, like CIA black sights and Abu-Ghraib.

And in the Fun Half: the real material implications of impeachment proceedings in the Senate, breakdown of the most important moments from yesterday's testimonies, Ben Shapiro & Joe DeGenova's brilliant defense of Donald Trump, and the CNBC anchors are light-headed over the new Warren anti-billionaire ads.

Good morning, joining Michael Brooks on today's Majority Report is Professor Mohamad Junaid to discuss the on-going situation in Kashmir. Brooks and Junaid begin their conversation with an overview of Kashmiri history, including its constitutional autonomy and the recent decisions by Modi's government to revoke the region's relative independence. Junaid explains that the Modi regime wants demographic transformation in Kashmir, moving Hindu Indians into the territory as a means to make way for industrialists to exploit natural resources and development opportunities in the region. Brooks and Junaid describe the Kashmiri history behind self-determination, and why the historiography of "India v. Pakistan" is not only misleading but erases the Kashmiri people and feeds into Indian and Pakistani nationalism. Broadening the conversation, Junaid explains the extent to which China has been a player in the Kashmir conflict over the past half-century. China has not been a stabilizing diplomatic force in the region despite its vast economic and trade interests in South Asia. Considering the nuclear threat and potential for "hot war" in Kashmir, how should the global community respond? Junaid argues that the rise of right-wing populism does not help the situation in Kashmir. He posits that our democratic institutions need to be more representative of our societies as a whole. A holistic approach centered on economic rights and human rights is the best antidote to the rash of right-wing populism taking hold of governments across the globe.

And in the Fun Half: Ronald Raygun on Bernie Sanders' immigration plan, Bernie's workers Bill of Rights, Glenn Greenwald is assaulted by a Bolsonaro press apparatchik,  Dan Crenshaw values Israeli alliance over the 1st Amendment, Trump tells his supporters "we are the elite," Hillary and Chelsea are yucking it up with Trevor Noah about Jeffrey Epstein, Jesse Watters' mom is ashamed of her son, Laura Ingraham playing her old "demographic changes" white supremacy, Julian Castro roasts Mayo Pete on the Daily Show, plus your calls and IMs!

Author Aaron Glantz (@Aaron_Glantz) joins us to discuss his new book, 'Homewreckers: How a Gang of Wall Street Kingpins, Suckered Millions Out of Their Homes and Demolished the American Dream.' The 2008 financial crisis saw countless Americans lose their homes while the banks that caused it suffered zero repercussions. Glantz outlines how crooks like Steve Mnuchin and Wilbur Ross caused the crash by preying upon the average American via poorly regulated financial products, and how the government then let them shift 100% of the blowback onto regular people. The alternate model set forth by FDR in which homes were saved. The story of Sandra Jolley, a consumer advocate who secured an $89 million whistleblower settlement on a reverse-mortgage foreclosure scheme by Mnuchin's bank.

Author Corey Robin (@CoreyRobin) joins us to discuss his new book, The Enigma of Clarence Thomas.

On today's show: Kevin McCarthy indignant about impeachment, Steny Hoyer says GOP is just getting mad now.

Corey Robin (@CoreyRobin), professor of political science at Brooklyn College and the Graduate Center of the City University of New York, joins us to discuss his new book, The Enigma of Clarence Thomas. While Clarence Thomas is currently the longest serving justice on the SCOTUS, he is not widely studied or understood. In this book, Robin explores the experiences that shaped his views and decisions, tying together strands including black nationalism, Afro-pessimism, patriarchy, and a belief in unfettered capitalism and state authority. At base, Robin argues, Thomas' belief in racism as an individualized, transhistorical, and impossible-to-vanquish force is similar to what liberals believe, yet also a primary driver of his conservative ideology.

On the fun half: How will impeachment affect 2020 turnout? Ben Shapiro on Sept 24: "No quid pro quo, no impeachment...no moving goal posts." Shapiro moving the goal post Nov 1: "There was a quid pro quo...the question is whether it was corrupt." Bernie says he wants to pay for m4a in a progressive way, but doesn't want to explain that now. Bernie explains costs difference for private insurance vs. m4a health coverage. Yang on m4a: "I'm adopting the label but not the bill." Buttigieg says Democrats need "humility" in new healthcare policies. Pelosi aide Wendell Primus' anti-m4a talking points. Pelosi does not support m4a in 2020 election. Graph: US life expectancy vs. that of other developed nations. Pelosi pledges commitment to pay-go and infrastructure week. MTA turnstile protest. On today's program, we planned to discuss, The Fallacy of Dynamic Scoring in Social Security and why we should use the first scenario in the Social Security trustee report, with Dr. Leonard Fleishman. Unfortunately, Brendan chewed through critical ethernet cables. The interview was lost, the show halted, and the MR team pivoted to its backup programming, Stoughton, Massachusetts' own Ken, Ken & Ken show.

On the Ken, Ken, & Ken show, Ryan Grim joins the Deuce to discuss the vicious Squad and why ISIS and ICE are the same--unbelievable. The boys then explain the cruelty of the ABA in the face of Lawrence VanDyke's confirmation hearing to be a federal judge. Plus, the latest hot single from Lil Trump, "Impeach Deez Nutz." The gang also gets to your calls and IMs about all the lib losers who run our culture and the deep state.

On today's show, Matt Stoller, author of Goliath: The Hundred Year War Between Monopoly Power and Democracy, joins Sam to discuss the history and future of antitrust and monopoly in America. Stoller says the inspiration for his book started with his work as a congressional staff member during the 2008 financial crisis and the Democrats' failure to hold the big banks accountable for their actions. Sam and Matt begin their conversation with the 1912 presidential election and the different regulatory responses from Teddy Roosevelt, Eugene Debs, Howard Taft, and Woodrow Wilson to the Robber Barron capital consolidation of the past decade. Moving forward to the 1930s, Stoller argues that capital powers (Mellon, Rockefeller, and JP Morgan) controlled much of federal policy. The New Deal was the experiment that showed democracy could work--breaking up financial autocrats, utility monopolies, and more. To quote Supreme Court Justice Louis Brandeis, "We may have democracy, or we may have wealth concentrated in the hands of a few, but we can't have both." Sam and Matt then explore the story of Wright Patman, a populist democratic congressman from Texas, whose life work was to hold powerful banks and corporations to account through rigorous regulations from his seat as Chairman of the Banking Committee. Patman was forced out by the younger generation of Democrats in the 1970s, which Stoller refers to as the "Baby Watergate" generation of elected officials who championed racial justice at the expense of holding capital accountable. Stoller argues that the anti-monopoly and regulatory measures pushed by Patman and their material implications are critical to racial justice, and something that is missing from our discourse on race in contemporary America. Sam and Matt conclude their discussion with how conservative intellectuals reframed American history to minimize the victories of workers' rights, antitrust, and regulation efforts of the New Deal. And finally, Stoller explains how people can begin to understand themselves as members of a free and fair democracy and how to fight the manipulative efforts of financier and oligarchic class.

And in the Fun Half: Donny Deutsch thinks M4A will sink Democrats in a general election, the new IMF chief applauds Trump's tax cuts, Dr. Drew says housing is not a solution to homelessness, Washington Nationals fans cheer "lock him up!" to Donald Trump, Joe Scarborough's textbook false equivalency on the "lock him up" chant, Chris Coons is sad Trump was booed at the baseball game because he's a traditionalist, Joe Biden actually asked Obama not to endorse him, and how SuperPACs are just a fact of life for Biden, plus your calls and IMs!

Sam is back for day two at the Mass Torts Conference in Las Vegas. Chris Tisi first joins Sam to discuss the progress on the Talcum powder lawsuit and when Johnson & Johnson knew its product caused cancer in women. While the litigation moves through the courts, Tisi hopes the FDA will follow the lead of Canadian Drug regulators and label Talcum as a "not fit for human consumption." Attorney Matt Schultz joins Sam next to discuss potential litigation against Juul, the vaping giant owned by Altria. Schultz explains how the rise of vaping products, and particularly Juul, took a virtually nicotine-free generation and turned it into the most nicotine-addicted age since scientists started measuring it. Finally, attorney Wes Bowden joins Sam to discuss PFAS forever chemicals used across US military and naval bases. These forever chemicals do not disintegrate naturally in our bodies or environment and cause cancer even in the most trace amounts. Bowden says that there are approximately 6 million Americans currently receiving bottled water from the government because of high traces of PFAS found in their drinking water.

And in the Fun Half: Matt Gaetz says storming the SCIF was like '300,' the roast of Zuckerberg hosted by the women of the Democratic party, Ronald Ray Gun is learning a lot from Tim Pool, Jeff from Georgia is now the Boba Fett of the Majority Report, Sam brings on a new friend from Vegas who's against Medicare for All, plus your calls and IMs!

Sam makes his triumphant return to Las Vegas for the Mass Torts Conference!

Jeff Gaddy from Levin Papantonio is Sam's first guest of the day to discuss the on-going multi-jurisdiction litigation going on against the opioid producers and distributors across America. Gaddy and Sam explore the extensive lawsuits against drug-makers and distributors and make sense of the various settlements decided in the past several months. Gaddy gives a play-by-play of how Judge Dan Polster separated the enormous case into more manageable cases, which helped bring about the first settlements in the opioid litigation. Gaddy and Sam conclude their conversation considering how drug companies declaring bankruptcy might affect these settlements and what that means for consumers.

Carissa Phelps, an author, attorney, and advocate for exploited youth, joins Sam to discuss litigation against hotel corporations and their liability role in child trafficking. Phelps explains the role of police calls, reports, and even Trip Advisor reviews, which all point to recurring instances of child abuse at hotels across the country. Phelps goes on to share her own experience being sexually abused and trafficked as a young girl; and why it motivated her to dedicate her life to abolishing child sex trafficking. Sam and Carissa also get into the thornier issues surrounding sex work decriminalization and FOSTA-SESTA. The two conclude their conversation considering the Jeffrey Epstein case and how it will measure society moving forward.

And in the Fun Half: Judge Rehnquist's special robe, considering the Senate vote on impeachment, the Sanders ground operation in Iowa, recounting the Tim Pool debate, Ilhan Omar demands our attention to Modi's agenda of ethnic cleansing, Shaq defends Daryl Morey's stance on Hong Kong protests and free speech, Kirstjen Nielsen's rehabilitation tour takes a spin through the Fortune Most Powerful Women's Forum, team Bernie cuts a good ad, debunking Larry Summers claim that a Wealth Tax is political suicide, Zuckerberg says there's no fact-checking on Facebook, plus your IMs!

Sam is en route to Las Vegas for the biannual Tort Law Conference. Michael Brooks hosts today's Fun Half after an interview Sam recorded with Professor Virginia Eubanks on her book, Automating Inequality: How High-Tech Tools Profile, Police, and Punish the Poor. Join us as Sam and Eubanks discuss the impacts of data mining, policy algorithms, and predictive models on the working poor in America.

Eubanks tracks this disturbing phenomenon through interviews with numerous experts and public benefit recipients.

Good morning, on today's Majority Report Michael Brooks hosts Matt Karp, professor of History at Princeton University, for his latest piece in the Jacobin, "Is This the Future Liberals Want?" Join as Karp and Brooks discuss the prospects of Trump in 2020 and the potential pitfalls of "progressive technocracy" defining the future of the Democratic party. Brooks and Karp begin their conversation exploring the broader course of the Democratic party's New Deal coalition politics transition away from working people. In losing this class configuration, Karp believes voters have put the individual politician above the policy platform, leaving the foundation of any movement unstable at best. Additionally, the restructuring of the global economy and left political parties moving away from class alignment have accelerated the political realignment underway across western democracies. Shifting gears, Brooks and Karp take on the political media discourse surrounding the "professional-managerial class" identity that the Democratic Party now upholds. Karp argues that this breed of Democrats does not have the fight that a material class-based party would in struggling for things like Medicare for All and Card Check. It's impossible to ignore the rate at which inequality is growing, which is why the professional class Democrats see Warren as a crucial candidate. But still, Karp and Brooks believe, given the track record of recent Democratic presidents, only a working class-driven candidate from the grassroots arm of the party can push through progressive legislation that produces material benefits for workers. The two conclude their conversation considering the challenges that a Bernie Sanders administration would face and how his grassroots movement would confront and mobilize against the capitalist class.

And in the Fun Half: Bernie's debate performance and the Squad endorsement, recalling Bernie's defense of Ilhan Omar amidst anti-semitism attacks, remembering Elijah Cummings, assessing the Democratic primary field, the Serfs call in and share their charity drive stream, Kamala Harris can't stop talking about Twitter mods, updates on the Chicago Teachers' Strike, Warren's stance on Israel/Palestine, libertarians who like Bernie, Bullprog's story from the Minneapolis  Trump rally, Warren supporter tells Fox News the billionaires class bitches too much about taxes, plus your calls and IMs!

Good morning, Eric Levitz joins the Majority Report to discuss his essay in New York, "The Bernie vs. Warren Debate We Need," and provide some clarity to the intra-left "Bernie or Warren" discourse. Sam and Levitz begin their conversation exploring the idea that "the American left's bark is louder than its bite." The left has helped shift the country's political discussion in the past several years and has gotten the ear of mainstream political elites and media, but it does not have the institutional power held by centrist Democrats like Schumer, Manchin, and Tester. Levitz argues that there's a gulf between the elite media discourse (which is young and left) and institutional power (which is old and rural) in terms of their desired goals and deliverable actions. Shifting gears, Sam and Levitz discuss the apparent differences between Sanders and Warren. For Levitz, it's not apparent that Sanders would stretch executive power more than Warren. The distinction worth making is that the two progressive frontrunners will push progressive policies through executive action more so than the leading centrist candidate Joe Biden. Sam also explains the political stakes of a Bernie Sanders presidency, and its commitment to a principled policy like Medicare for All. Calling for a vote on real progressive policy will draw more apparent distinctions within the Democratic party. Sam and Levitz conclude their conversation considering what constitutes the Democratic party now and what it would take to build a broader coalition of Democratic voters moving beyond 2020.

And in the Fun Half: we have the president of Finland ask him a question, Trump would investigate the Bidens if he were Zelensky, Trump has decided his foreign policy actions in the Ukraine are now perfectly lawful, Corey Lewandowski is drunk on Fox Business News, the Blaze's Dave Rubin defends Jordan Peterson's enforced monogamy, the courtroom scenes from the Amber Guyger sentencing, the Ghost of Retroactively Classified documents calls from San Antonio, Ken Langone thinks Bernie Sanders wants to shoot him, Beto goes after Mayor Pete, but Yang is now the premier skater in the Democratic field, plus your calls and IMs!

TODAY'S HEADLINES:

ecretary of State Mike Pompeo reject Democrats demands for State Dept. officials’ testimony in impeachment depositions scheduled for this week.

Meanwhile, billionaire Tom Steyer launches a $3 million pro-impeachment ad campaign that will target vulnerable Republican Senators running for reelection in 2020.

And lastly, the New York Times reports that Trump has suggested shooting migrants in the legs and filling a moat with snakes or alligators to help stop immigration.

And our QUICKER QUICKIES HEADLINES:

Donald Trump and the Republican National Committee raised a massive $125 million in the third quarter. For perspective; over the equivalent period in 2011, President Obama raised nearly $70 million for his re-election campaign.

Politico reports that House investigators are looking into an allegation that groups — including at least one foreign government — tried to ingratiate themselves to President Trump by booking rooms at his hotels but never staying in them.

Three House committee chairmen sent a letter addressed to Deputy Secretary of State John Sullivan on the grounds that the Secretary of State Mike Pompeo “now appears to have an obvious conflict of interest,” the Wall Street Journal reports.

Pompeo’s participation in the call between President Trump and the Ukrainian president, the lawmakers wrote, renders him a witness in the congressional impeachment inquiry, and as a result, “he should not be making any decisions regarding witness testimony or document production in order to protect himself or the president.

And finally, Rudy Giuliani wants to sue congress. That’s right, Trump’s bumbling lawyer told Fox News’ Laura Ingraham that he wants to bring a lawsuit against House Democrats for investigating the president in the wake of revelations involving Trump's interactions with Ukraine.

Ingraham called Giuliani’s proposal “novel” before ending Rudy’s legal fantasy when she reminded the former Associate Attorney General that members of Congress have immunity for anything they say on the floor.

And lastly, a new UN Climate Report says the future looks pretty terrible for Earth’s oceans

The Washington Post reports about a half-million students could lose access to free school meals under a Trump administration proposal to limit the number of people who qualify for food stamps. The move is drawing protests from congressional Democrats who say it will harm needy schoolchildren.

And Massachusetts Governor Charlie Baker has declared a four-month ban on the sale of any vaping products in the state on Tuesday, The Boston Globe reports. The ban, which is believed to be the first state-wide one in the U.S., will reportedly apply to sales of tobacco and marijuana e-cigarettes, and will take effect immediately.

On today's show, Robert Kuttner (@rkuttnerwrites) founder of The American Prospect joins the Majority Report to discuss his new book, The Stakes: 2020 and the Survival of American Democracy.

Kuttner and Sam begin their conversation considering the Trump presidency in terms of his cabinet members. Kuttner says the "establishment" cabinet members that have left were the primary actors keeping Trump from enacting his most anti-democratic policies. Kuttner believes that without a robust economic progress Democratic opponent in 2020, Trump will win a second term and dismantle American democracy beyond repair. While Trump appears to be a unique threat to democracy, Kuttner argues that Democrats have been equally bad in presenting an alternative vision. Democrats got into bed with Wall St under the Clinton and Obama administration which helped lay the groundwork for a Trump presidency that tied racial resentment to economic anxiety borne out of the great recession. Looking ahead to next year's election, Kuttner and Sam discuss the latest Iowa polling showing Warren's momentum growing, and how the Trump/Biden race looks now that the Ukraine whistleblower story is all over the headlines. Considering the prisoner's dilemma of the Sanders and Warren campaigns, Kuttner and Sam speculate on what happens to the progressive left if and when the teams begin to attack one another. The two conclude their interview considering what the best way to manage capitalism under a future left-progressive presidential administration, how Democrats should proceed with impeachment and the possibility of a brokered convention in Milwaukee next summer.

And in the Fun Half: Nancy Pelosi's "Dear Colleague" letter, Donald Trump and Rudy Giuliani aren't quite on the same page about using aid to bribe Ukraine's president, Greta Thunberg exposes the hypocrisy of today's world leaders, Keeanga Yamatta Taylor shares her thoughts on black support for Bernie Sanders, Democrats are not suited to advocate for their constituents, dealing with political dissent amongst friends, starting a progressive media platform, plus your calls and IMs!

Welcome to Majority.FM's AM QUICKIE! Brought to you by justcoffee.coop

TODAY'S HEADLINES:

Impeachment is now looking very likely after Trump admits he talked to Ukraine about investigating Biden.

Meanwhile, Trump plans to hold a religious freedom event at the UN on the same day world leaders gather there for an important climate summit.

And lastly, the GOP has internal data that shows any ban on vaping could destroy their hopes Trump winning reelection in 2020.

And our QUICKER QUICKIES HEADLINES:

A New York judge has fined a Queen’s landlord $17,000 for threatening to Call ICE on a tenant. Lawyers for the city’s human-rights commission said they believe the case is first in the U.S. where an individual was penalized for threatening to call immigration authorities.

Politico reports that Trump’s reelection campaign team is growing increasingly worried about a repeat winning performance in Michigan, considered the “crown jewel” of his 2016 victory. The concern illustrates how Trump’s support in Rust Belt states that propelled him to the presidency is evaporating.

An eight-vehicle motorcade for Vice President Mike Pence drove onto Michigan’s Mackinac Island on Saturday, where cars have been generally banned for over a century. The motorcade angered locals, as well as observers on social media, including Michigan Democratic Rep. Rashida Tlaib, who called the the long line of black SUVs “disgusting”.

And global women's rights advocates raised alarm Monday after a leaked letter showed the Trump administration is pressuring U.N. member nations to join an international anti-abortion coalition.

The letter, first reported by the Guardian and set to be presented Monday during a U.N. General Assembly meeting on universal health coverage, urges nations to oppose the creation of "a new international right to abortion."

Chief youth correspondent Myla Seder joins us with a live, on-the-ground report from the scene of the climate strike. The size of the march, the signs. How much are kids talking about climate change? Spoiler alert: a lot.

On the fun half: Billy Bragg vs. Eric Weinstein on the topic of free speech. Weinstein goes on Rogan, complains about Sam's treatment of Dave Rubin. Delaney says we need to work with GOP on carbon tax to save the environment. Former CMS official explains why public option won't relieve healthcare costs. Mayor Pete goes after Warren on healthcare plan, says she's evasive. Labor Secretary nominee Eugene Scalia evades question on paycheck fairness legislation. Dan Crenshaw ignores and hides from vets who question his support of Trump. Ben Shapiro laments Oxford English Dictionary adding "they/them" as a pronoun. Writer and television producer Natalie Shure joins Michael Brooks on today's Majority Report to discuss her latest piece in the Jacobin"Elizabeth Warren's Health Care Plan Still Leaves a Lot of Unanswered Questions." Michael and Natalie begin their conversation considering the ways politicians have described Medicare for All as anything but a single-payer system that is free at the point of service. Despite previously endorsing Bernie Sanders' Medicare for All bill, Warren's new plan for Medicare for All remains murky. Warren's strategy as it exists now does not mention eliminating cost-sharing. According to Natalie, "while single-payer shifts costs entirely into taxes, plans that maintain cost-sharing redistribute those costs more heavily onto people with greater care needs — disproportionately sicker and poorer people and women." A big sticking point for Natalie in the healthcare discourse is the word choice of politicians who refer to reforms as "access to affordable health insurance." This is not the language of candidates who are interested in creating a robust public institution, like Medicare for All, but rather the message of candidates create a more efficient market that should be reformed but not abolished. Considering all this, do voters think that Warren will fight for a vigorous Medicare for All while she hedges her language on healthcare and has pledged to make government corruption her primary campaign concern. Michael and Natalie end their conversation looking back at the Obama administration's existential fight to get the ACA passed in 2010. Remember, the ACA was initially proposed with a public option only to strip that away and then watered-down by lobbyists and health insurance special interests in DC. It will take a grassroots, continued effort from voters, pressuring their representatives to pass a Medicare for All option because the insurance industry will throw everything it has at stopping Medicare for All.

And in the Fun Half: updates from Oklahoma and Kashmir, the pedantry of the MR university, how to protect unions and expand them beyond 2019, how Bernie plans to help workers in the executive office, Michael goes deep on Bernie's housing plan, how to convince Warren supporters of Bernie's positions, the possibility of single-payer healthcare, Andrew Yang calls for the decriminalization of all drugs, Mayor Pete still wants to pay premiums, plus your calls and IMs!

Award-winning investigative reporter Ben Westhoff joins us to discuss his book, 'Fentanyl, Inc: How Rogue Chemists Are Creating the Deadliest Wave of the Opioid Epidemic.'

On today's show: Flashback: Kavanaugh lying to Blumenthal about "Renata Alumnus" yearbook. Bethany Mandel defends Kavanaugh putting his penis in Debie Ramirez's face. Roommate Avi Smolen says Mandel is not remembering correctly.

Author and investigative reporter Ben Westhoff joins us to discuss his book, 'Fentanyl, Inc: How Rogue Chemists Are Creating the Deadliest Wave of the Opioid Epidemic.' While heroin deaths have gone down in recent years, deaths from fentanyl and other drugs continue to climb. "Synthetic" drugs like K2, whereby chemists continuously change a drug's molecular make-up to stay a step ahead of the law, are also a problem. For this book, Westhoff investigated this phenomenon in detail, speaking with users, dealers, and law enforcement, even going so far as to pretend to be a drug dealer so he could tour the Chinese chemical factories that sell the precursors to fentanyl and other drugs. To fight overdose deaths, he recommends decriminalization, supervised injection facilities, free testing strips, and other harm reduction measures.

Dave Rubin finally blocks Sam; the crew looks back on the good times.

On the fun half: Chris Coons and Kilmeade come together for war with Iran. Brian Kilmeade says we must protect the world's oil supply. Schiff says intel director's refusal to reveal a whistleblower complaint is "deeply troubling." 2017: Biden retells the Corn Pop saga at Wilmington pool. Bernie explains fair housing and real estate reform. Chris Christie says Bernie was "visually unappealing" during debate. Buttigieg doesn't want policies that will "polarize" the country.

On today's show: Trump says vaping is dangerous and Melania has a son "together."

Daniel Bessner (@dbessner) joins us to discuss his latest piece in the New Republic, "The Fog of Intervention." In it, Bessner explores Samantha Power's new memoir and diplomatic career leading Obama's foreign policy at the United Nations. In her book, "A Problem From Hell: America in the Age of Genocide," she laid out the case for a kind of humanitarian interventionism that led to some of the worst foreign policy disasters in the Obama administration. On today's show: Trump says Bahamas refugees need paperwork for visas because "very bad people" will come.

Peter Edelman (@peterbedelman), Carmack Waterhouse Professor of Law and Public Policy and the faculty director of the Center on Poverty and Inequality at Georgetown University Law Center, joins us to discuss his book, Not a Crime to Be Poor: The Criminalization of Poverty in America. Despite being one of the richest countries on earth, America often treats its poorest citizens like criminals. The crew debates a libertarian caller. Trump says he will release "extremely complete" financial statements before 2020 election. CAP lays off, replaces entire unionized news room; Neera Tanden tweets supporting unions through the years. Valerie Plame's spy movie 2020 Congressional race ad is crazy. Good morning, journalist Christopher Leonard joins Sam to discuss his new book The Secret History of Koch Industries and Corporate Power in America. Join us at noon ET. Leonard's latest work has received high praise from leading journalists like Jane Mayer and Bryan Burrough because of its exhaustive research into the Koch's incredible private business network that exists across all planes of American life. Leonard explains how the Koch's business portfolio and its commodity research put the family business in the middle of all American life, from the things we buy to the government that legislates our society. Sam and Leonard explore the contradictions at the heart of the Koch family's libertarian philosophies, where the Kochs are the entrenched status-quo benefiting from government environmental policies and government subsidies which allow their oil refineries to thrive. Another foundational element of the Koch Brothers success is its status as a private company. Charles Koch never needed to answer to shareholders and could reinvest profits into the company, buy competitors, and enter new industries essential to American consumers. Sam and Leonard conclude their discussion examining the anti-union practices designed by Koch Industries and how those methods have increased worker productivity and reduced real wages over the past three decades. Looking towards the post-Charles Koch Industries, Leonard believes the future is still uncertain. While Charles' son Chase seems groomed for the next generation of Koch leadership, Leonard also thinks Charles' thinking has been embedded in the company's culture and will live on well after the longtime CEO's death.

And in the Fun Half: CBP and USCIS test a border shutdown scenario with Bahaman refugees, Mike Pompeo threatens Taliban with war, Ben Shapiro says we can't make policy because of personal or moral failings, the case for reparations in 2019, the latest polls and reading the tea leaves of Biden's campaign, the popularity of the Green New Deal, what the next recession might look like, Pam Anderson explains her support for Julian Assange on The View, Elizabeth Warren pivots away from questions about her foreign policy and military budget votes, Mark Sanford thinks conservatives will vote for him in a 2020 GOP primary because of the deficit, a gun goes off outside an Alabama HS football game and we're freer than ever, plus your calls and IMs!

On today's program, Michael Brooks hosts journalist Ronan Burtenshaw to discuss his latest in the Jacobin"Only Corbynism Can Defeat Boris." Join us as Brooks and Burtenshaw discuss how only a distinct democratic socialist position can defeat the right's No-Deal Brexit plan. Brooks and Burtenshaw review recent parliamentary history in the UK which has allowed for "zombie governments" to continue ruling while they do not have the votes necessary to administrate change. Brooks recounts Boris Johnson's political rise in the UK and how it compares and contrasts with Trump's "populism" in the United States. Burtenshaw says Johnson's PMQ (Prime Minister Questions) sessions were supposed to be a strength for the new PM. However, it has been a rather disastrous strategy for Johnson, where opponents like Corbyn have made Johnson look politically lost. Johnson now looks to switch gears, moving to the campaign trail, where he is heading to Wakefield, a Northern England working-class town, flanked by police to call for more "law and order" across the UK. Brooks and Burtenshaw also take a look at Dominic Cummings, Johnson's chief political advisor who was most recently the director of the Vote Leave movement which brought us to Brexit. Burtenshaw says Cummings understands that the most popular policies are left redistributive economics and right-wing nationalist sentiments. Cummings knows that the "moderate" positions in Parliament do not represent the interests of voters.

Burtenshaw acknowledges that the new concern for the left in the UK is the realignment of class interests. Burtenshaw feels there are two paths to defeat Johnson. One is coalescing around the liberal center, pulling the labor party to the right with a broad alliance that is upholding "sensible policy." Burtenshaw thinks this board coalition that defends the status quo will not win because people are tired of waiting for things to get better in a political system that does not listen to them. Instead, Burtenshaw argues the Labor party should point out the Tory party's leaders and their interest in the financial sector, real estate, and the private school systems. The Tories will have to respond to this and forced to defend these deeply unpopular interests. Brooks and Burtenshaw conclude their discussion with policy proposals that Labor and the left can embrace and run on during the upcoming elections.

And in the Fun Half: an update on the situation in Kashmir, Bernie on reproductive rights and climate catastrophe, Dave Rubin's Hitler apologia, Seb Gorka is hawking fish oil pills, Kamala Harris frames the climate crisis in the worst way possible, Warren makes clear personal consumption choices are not systemic reform, Bernie explains how a climate reform can curb military spending, Biden is off to a fossil fuel executive's fundraiser less than 24 hours after the Climate Town Hall, the "ethics" of "voting" "conversation," the UN Human Rights Council says the US, UK, and France are responsible for great human rights violations, plus your calls and IMs!

On today's show, Steven Greenhouse (@greenhousenyt), author of, Beaten Down, Worked Up: The Past, Present and Future of American Labor. Sam and Greenhouse begin their conversation distinguishing the differences between labor and union power and a brief history of how labor gained strength during the FDR New Deal era. Union strength peaked in the 1950s and helped build the American middle class as we recognize it today. Greenhouse argues that the contemporary worker has the least power he or she has had since before the National Labor Relations Rights Act, which manifests itself in workers lacking paid sick leave and mandatory time off. Likewise, the decline in union membership helped provide the slim margin of victory for Trump. Take Wisconsin, which saw a 44% decline in union membership during Scott Walker's tenure as governor, over 177,000 workers. Given the assault on labor power over the last several decades, how can worker power reassert itself in the political landscape and rebuild strength? Greenhouse says the 2020 Democratic primary has shown a necessary change in the political discourse with candidates like Sanders centering policy proposals on union expansion. Sam and Greenhouse also consider policies like card check to make union organizing simpler. Sam and Greenhouse conclude their conversation discussing the extinction of labor reporting in American journalism.

And in the Fun Half: mass shooter designed schools are under construction, the right is saying don't challenge the lawful gun owners, or they'll kill, Meghan McCain is so tired of liberals "virtue signaling" about mass shootings and not wanting to be killed, some Sam career advice, building coalitions across the left spectrum of politics, the best clips from PMQ at the yesterday's House of Commons session in the UK, Mike Pence is in Ireland and loving his stay (at a Trump resort), Hasan Minhaj surprises PM Trudeau with criticism of Canada's arm sales to Saudi Arabia, Ben Shapiro minimizes Trump's insane idea to nuke hurricanes, plus your calls and IMs!

We're back from our August break! And we got a heaping pile of news for you, our dear listeners! On today's program, Sam and crew tackle the biggest stories from the last week including what the hell is going on in the United Kingdom, Joe Biden's fluid understanding of "truth" and "character," and the most recent developments in the 2020 Democratic field. Sam breaks down Bernie's new medical debt forgiveness proposal and what else it will do to alleviate people's bankruptcy problems. The crew also checks in with the Washington Post fact-checkers and their campaign to discredit the Bernie Sanders campaign. Sam closes out the free half with a tale from the deep archive about the time he interviewed Sean Hannity and asked the Fox host about the End Times.

And in the Fun Half: John from San Antonio endorses Brendan's MR deep archive selections, Donald Trump has a "great message" for Poland on the 80th anniversary of the Nazi invasion, the president shares his knowledge of FARC, the press can't drive a wedge between Warren and Sanders, Tulsi Gabbard is still in the presidential race, deciding who qualifies and who does not, avoiding the "rigged" storyline of 2016, what to do when you work for a small business a-holes, systemic racism in Michigan rears its ugly head, Ben Shapiro's guest says trans people are a threat to the family unit, reporters own the Boston straight pride organizers at their shitty press conference, Andrew Yang will keep printing a blank check for Israel, the difference between what happens when people stay home and when people vote third party, plus your calls and IMs!

Joshua Murray, Assistant Professor of Sociology at Vanderbilt University, joins Sam to discuss his new book (co-authored with Michael Schwartz), "Wrecked: How the American Automobile Industry Destroyed Its Capacity to Compete."

At its peak in the 1950s and 1960s, automobile manufacturing was the largest, most profitable industry in the United States and residents of industry hubs like Detroit and Flint, Michigan had some of the highest incomes in the country. Over the last half-century, the industry has declined, and American automakers now struggle to stay profitable. How did the most prosperous industry in the richest country in the world crash and burn? In Wrecked, sociologists Joshua Murray and Michael Schwartz offer an unprecedented historical-sociological analysis of the downfall of the auto industry. Through an in-depth examination of labor relations and the production processes of automakers in the U.S. and Japan both before and after World War II, they demonstrate that the decline of the American manufacturers was the unintended consequence of their attempts to weaken the bargaining power of their unions.

Katharina Pistor, Edwin B. Parker Professor of Comparative Law at Columbia Law School and Director of the Law School's Center on Global Legal Transformation, joins Sam to discuss her new book, "The Code of Capital: How the Law Creates Wealth and Inequality."

Capital is the defining feature of modern economies, yet most people have no idea where it actually comes from. What is it, exactly, that transforms mere wealth into an asset that automatically creates more wealth? The Code of Capital explains how capital is created behind closed doors in the offices of private attorneys, and why this little-known fact is one of the biggest reasons for the widening wealth gap between the holders of capital and everybody else.

Journalist Todd Miller (@memomiller) joins Sam to discuss his new book, "Empire of Borders: The Expansion of the U.S. Border Around the World."

The twenty-first century has witnessed the rapid hardening of international borders. Security, surveillance, and militarization are widening the chasm between those who travel where they please and those whose movements are restricted. But that is only part of the story. As journalist Todd Miller reveals in Empire of Borders, the nature of US borders has changed. These boundaries have effectively expanded thousands of miles outside of US territory to encircle not simply American land but Washington’s interests.

Alexandra Minna Stern, professor of American Culture at the University of Michigan, joins us to discuss her book, 'Proud Boys and the White Ethnostate: How the Alt-Right Is Warping the American Imagination.'

From a loose movement that lurked in the shadows in the early 2000s, the alt-right has achieved a level of visibility that has allowed it to expand significantly throughout America’s cultural, political, and digital landscapes. Racist, sexist, and homophobic beliefs that were previously unspeakable have become commonplace, normalized, and accepted—endangering American democracy and society as a whole.
Through careful analysis, Stern brings awareness to the underlying concepts that guide the alt-right and animate its overlapping forms of racism, xenophobia, transphobia, and anti-egalitarianism.

Happy Friday! On today's show, Ben Mankiewicz from Turner Classic Movies and Matt Binder from Mashable join Michael Brooks to breakdown the news of the week! We're live at noon EST. Brooks is joined by Turner Classic Movies host Ben Mankiewicz to discuss new and upcoming films. The two begin their conversation with the existential question, "why are there so many goddamn superhero movies?" Mankiewicz gives a brief overview of the golden age of 1970s cinema and the economics of the blockbuster and studio consolidation in the 1980s. Shifting to politics, Brooks and Mankiewicz consider Trump's latest moniker, "the King of the Jews," the country's incapacity to express shock, and the president's bewildering charisma. Mankiewicz ends the interview with film recommendations, including Network, Three Days in the Condor, The Conversation, and Ace in the Hole.

Then, Matt 1.0, Matt Binder of the podcast Doomed, joins Brooks in-studio to discuss the growing Bernie Sanders movement and white nationalism embedded in State Department bureaucracy. Binder recounts his recent interview with Michael Hayden of the Southern Poverty Law Center who discovered Matthew Q. Gebert. Gebert was a State Department official who is involved in the white nationalist movement. Gebert was a rising star at the Bureau of Energy Resources even after his brother had reported him to the FBI, citing his brother's involvement in white nationalist groups around Washington. Brooks and Binder discuss the problem with covering hate groups on YouTube and social media, which cannot differentiate between those who promote toxic ideologies and those who cover and report on them.

And in the Fun Half for Freebie Friday: Andrew Miller from Amazon Watch explains the Bolsonaro government's involvement in the rainforest's raging wildfires, a reminder that Dave Rubin doesn't care about Brazilian deforestation, a flashback Friday: Wyatt Ingraham Koch, the coming Biden v. Trump Jello debate, plus your calls and IMs!

On today's show, Joshua Specht (@joshspecht), author of Red Meat Republic: A Hoof-to-Table History of How Beef Changed America. The story of beef production in America begins at the cattle ranch, which was a tool of conquest in the West. In some places, cattle ranching resembled a paramilitary operation with settlers and natives fighting for land rights. Settlers looked to graze with their cattle while natives hunted what remained of buffalo populations. The federal government's decision to inter natives to reservations gave ranchers free rein and allowed them to build larger ranches with more heads of cattle. After ranching established itself, the meatpackers from Chicago and capitalists invested in the western farms, flooding the marketplace with meat and creating an oligopoly, or as the owners of the time called it, "holding both ends of the string." Sam and Joshua explore the meatpacking assembly lines in Chicago which inspired Henry Ford's auto manufacturing lines and was the focus of Upton Sinclair's 'The Jungle.' While Sinclair wanted to spark a socialist revolution amongst American workers, American consumers and politicians instead regulated the industry based on sanitation, with Roosevelt's Meat Inspection Act of 1906. Given the broad implications of beef's economic history, what does it mean to us now? Specht questions the short term impacts of meat and climate change; and how consumer prices are often used to deflect criticism of the industry, like labor rights and environmental concerns.

And in the Fun Half: Larry Kudlow is enjoying the August recess, Jimmy Dore has something against Justice Democrats, Killer Mike explains why a free college option is essential for America, Jesse Watters thinks he was a slave when he did chores, Pete Buttigieg fearmongers about the national debt, Fox News contributor says the prison system is maybe the least racist American institution, Ainsley Earhardt wishes the homeless would just disappear, plus your calls and IMs!

Good morning,  Branko Marcetic from the Jacobin joins Michael Brooks to discuss his recent story, "Why the Right Hates Ilhan Omar." Conservatives hate her because of her race and religion, but they also fear the organizing and fighting she has done for working people of all races and beliefs.

As Donald Trump launches his 2020 campaign with his most extreme white supremacist rhetoric to date, Ilhan Omar finds herself at the center of the right's sight. Brooks and Marcetic break down the reasons why the right has it out for Omar. The misconceptions about Ilhan Omar are many and varied, but her focus on universal programs like student debt forgiveness, renters rights, and Medicare for All has set her apart from traditional midwest centrist Democrats like Amy Klobuchar. Marcetic places Omar in the populist history of the upper midwest, comparing her campaign to Paul Wellstone's 1990 Senate run, and his populist platform which backed labor groups and voting against repealing the Glass-Stiegel Act. It's hard to remember now, but the event that put Omar on the GOP's radar was when she questioned Elliot Abrams during his confirmation hearing before the House Foreign Affairs Committee. Marcetic argues that Omar's foreign policy critique, which challenges US imperialism, most angers the right and the foreign policy blob in DC. Brooks and Marcetic conclude their discussion by comparing the right's demonization of Omar with its previous campaign to vilify Obama. The right's racist campaign against Obama was effective insofar that Obama continued the wars in the Middle East, increased drone warfare, and bailing out Wall Street. Omar has shown no intent to appease Republicans' interests even in the face of death threats and harassment in the press.

And in the Fun Half: convincing Mexicans to maintain left politics after AMLO, updates on the situation in Kashmir, why now is the time for serious debate within the Democratic Caucus, Michael debriefs his debate with Destiny on Twitch, a moment to appreciate Neoliberal John, conservative media's new populism, Sam Harris says white supremacists are simply "shitposting" when they do mass killings, Hondurans are in the streets protesting President Juan Orlando Hernandez after SDNY released corruption charges tying him to the cartel cocaine trade, an update on Lula's imprisonment in Brazil,  plus your calls and IMs!

On today's show, Alex Pareene joins us to discuss Mitch McConnell, election security, and why Marianne Williamson's platform is more durable than politicos think. We're live at noon eastern time.

In his first day back from debate coverage, Sam assesses the Sanders/Warren coalition and the wide-ranging demographics the two candidates cover. Alex Pareene explains Joe Biden's declining on-stage performance and why attacks from Cory Booker and Kamala Harris are beneficial to progressive left candidates like Warren and Sanders. While Biden is still in pole position, every candidate right of Sanders and Warren is taking his or her shot at the former vice president. Sam then explores the Sanders campaign strategy and its focus on organizing labor forces across the country. The progressives are ascending, and roles have flipped. The progressives have been center stage, and the centrist technocrats are on the outside.

Democrats have crossed a threshold with 118 Democratic Caucus members now in support of impeachment. Sam and Alex discuss what Pelosi will do now that the majority of her caucus supports impeachment proceedings. Next, Alex and Sam breakdown Mitch McConnell's resistance to the Senate's election security bills and why McConnell will fight to the death to keep money in politics. Likewise, why do Americans seem apathetic to expanding voting rights or securing election integrity?

Judy Gold joins Sam with a litany of rage. Some of her targets: Mitch McConnell, Trump's racism, Bill de Blasio's sideburns, MAGA people in her audience, Democratic indecision and infighting, and CNN's masturbatory patriotism. Judy wishes Jerry Nadler and Chuck Schumer would take a page out of Bernie Sanders' book on rage and mobilizing voters. Marianne Williamson's self-help is only for the rich and is all bullshit. But, ending on something positive, Judy says look to Puerto Rico's mass mobilization is something to aspire towards--get out there and do something!

And in the Fun Half: appreciating Bill O'Reilly's prose, taking the temperature of the disengaged electorate, the first Pareene "pause it," Jesse Watters praises Aetna and Blue Cross Blue Shield, Nikki Haley bravely uses emojis to protest Donald Trump's ambient racism, the Trump rally crowd applauds black attendees, Trump remembers the USSR, but not the Warsaw Uprising, and why TPP could sink an "electable" Democratic candidate in a general election against Trump, Jeff in Georgia offers himself up as a running mate to Sam's Libertarian ticket, plus your calls and IMs!

Good morning, Djene Bajalan joins Michael Brooks to discuss the current state of Turkey and Erdogan's role in the Middle East. Plus, how might a Democratic president approach diplomatic relations with Erdogan's government? Michael and Djene kick off their discussion with an assessment of the Democratic field's foreign policy agendas. Djene believes the way forward on progressive foreign policy is taking a more holistic approach which goes beyond condemning interventionism and endless imperialism. Instead, it's time to start providing plans to keep bad actors like Saudi Arabia from escalating tensions in the Middle East, like Sanders' plan to withhold aid and arms sales. Michael and Djene then compare and contrast Elizabeth Warren and Bernie Sanders' track record on foreign policy, with Warren's institutional pedigree and Sanders' citizen diplomacy. Djene next breaks down Tulsi Gabbard's center-left, anti-intervention foreign policy, and its inconsistencies like her relationships with Bashar al-Assad and Narendra Modi. Switching gears, Djene explores the latest round of Turkish elections which saw significant gains for opposition parties to Erdogan. Michael and Djene conclude their conversation considering Erdogan and his government as the prototype for global authoritarianism which has spanned over the world.

Good morning, on today's Majority Report, Fernando Tormos-Aponte from Scholars Strategy Network joins Michael Brooks to discuss his recent piece in the Jacobin, "Puerto Rico Rises," to explain how the Puerto Rican people organized and mobilized for change in their government after leaks of Governor Ricardo Rosselló and his administration's callous communications. We're live at 12:00 pm EST.

Brooks and Tormos-Aponte begin the interview looking back at the now former governor, Ricardo Rossello, who Tormos argues has been bred for the governorship since his youth when his father, Pedro Rosselló, was governor of Puerto Rico and young Ricardo was educated at private schools and Ivy League schools in the States. Tormos-Aponte then details the leaked text group involving Rossello and his executives, which showed the government's corruption with its fiscal control board and the elected officials cruel remarks about Hurricane Maria victims and the LGBTQ community. But why did leaked group texts lead to the governor's resignation? Much of Puerto Rico's financial distress and growing poverty can be attributed to the Puerto Rico Oversight, Management, and Economic Stability Act or PROMESA, which established strict oversight of the island's finances and austerity leading to large cuts in the public sector. Beyond PROMESA's austerity, Puerto Ricans believe Rossello has not fought hard enough on their behalf, where budgets to education and law enforcement have been cut and the electrical grid privatized. According to Tormos-Aponte, the island has not seen such strong protests since 2001 when cross-sectional mass protests called for the removal of the US military from the island municipality of Vieques. Tormos-Aponte says the next steps in taking back the government are just as important as removing Rossello. This is a bottom up revolution that will investigate the debt issued to Puerto Rico and one that won't stop with Rossello, who "they know he's just a figurehead," says Tormos-Aponte. Brooks ends the interview asking how the continental 48 can extend solidarity to Puerto Rico. For Tormos-Aponte, it's a simple, advocate for a constitutional assembly in Puerto Rico decide its own future, whether that be statehood or outright independence.

And in the Fun Half:

Anti-BDS measures are meant to drive wedge on the left, ICE terrorizes black and brown people to ethnically cleanse America, Cole James Cash tells all about his Jesse Lee Peterson experience, Bernie gives his pitch to the NAACP conference in Detroit, Trump's next big global peace efforts in Kashmir, ICE officers break a migrant's car window without a seizure warrant, Josh Hawley is seeding the ground for national socialism, plus your calls and IMs!
