The Majority Report with Sam Seder

It's Hump Day! And Emma is BACK! Sam and Emma speak with Rena Wong, president of the United Food and Commercial Workers (UFCW) local 663, to discuss the recent strike efforts by grocery workers in Minnesota. Then, they speak with Abby Vesoulis, national politics reporter at Mother Jones, to discuss her recent piece entitled "A Nixon-Era Food Program for Babies and Pregnant People Is Running Out of Cash'. First, Sam runs through updates on US retaliations to the Jordanian drone strikes, House and Senate politics, Elon’s $56 billion bummer, anti-trans legislation in Florida and Utah, DOJ proceedings against Cory Bush, Sinema’s fundraising downfall, Trump’s legal expenditures, and corporate awareness about climate change, before touching on Larry Kudlow and Marjorie Taylor Greene’s pitch to the Fox audience on the impeachment of Secretary Mayorkas. Rena Wong then joins, diving right into the role of UFCW Local 663 in representing many of Minneapolis’ essential workers, and the major issues facing their treatment at the hands of their employers. Wong begins by walking through the major transformations that 663 underwent over 2023, pushed by blatant disrespect from the corporations and their proposals that completely ignored the massive sacrifice their workers undertook during the pandemic, and the incredible profits that resulted from it., tackling the issues of payment, cost of living, and inflation, as well as severe and illegal anti-union campaigns from employers. After touching on the major strike actions that Local 663 undertook last year – including one in the lead-up to Christmas – Rena wraps up with the major factors behind the union’s transformation and the central role of unions in providing employees with the tools and strategy to stand up for each other and themselves. Abby Vesoulis then walks through the major role the WIC program plays in providing millions of mothers, infants, and children in the US with proper nutrition, and the incredibly obvious benefit it provides to society, before stepping back to walk through the inner workings of the program, how it connects with mothers and children, and how it uses its funds. After touching on the GOP’s pressures to cut funding for the program, and their successful attempt to delay its funding, Vesoulis wraps up by looking at the devastating impact cuts to the program could have on millions of Americans.

And in the Fun Half: Sam and Emma discuss Israel’s continued desecration of Palestinian civil society in Gaza and beyond, the US and IDF’s poor attempts to defend these actions, and the Israeli government’s complete lack of respect for the life of anyone – even their own hostages. They also touch on the insanity that is Donald Trump’s foreign policy, talk with Joe from Florida about his issues with the program, discuss being pro-Palestine in Europe with a caller, and watch Benny Johnson talk pop-star psyops, plus, your calls and IMs!

It's News Day Tuesday! But first, Sam speaks with Diana Buttu, Palestinian analyst and former legal advisor to the Palestine Liberation Organization, to discuss the International Court of Justice (ICJ)'s recent ruling in the case South Africa brought against Israel. First, Sam runs through updates on US-Israeli military action in the Middle East, the House GOP, US weapons exports, US labor action, Donald Trump, and French farmers, before admiring Florida Rep. Salazar’s poor politicking and walking through the insanity of the West revoking aid for UNRWA in the wake of the International Court of Justice’s ruling against Israel. Diana Buttu then dives into the ICJ’s recent ruling in South Africa’s genocide case against Israel over their war on Gaza, walking through the decision itself, the makeup of the justices, and why the near-unanimity in their decision is completely unsurprising considering South Africa’s overwhelming evidence, also touching on why the ICJ’s ruling is about as close to a ceasefire charge as we could’ve asked for. After walking Sam through the actual working definition of genocide, and the importance of the third-party obligations under the Genocide Convention and ICJ, Buttu assesses the active culpability of the West in Israel’s genocide, furthered by the recent revoking of funding for UNRWA. Wrapping up, they work through Israel’s response to the ICJ ruling, whether they’ll follow the decision, and what to make of much of the Israeli populace’s uncritical support for the ethnic cleansing of Gaza.

And in the Fun Half: Sam takes in some great Hip-Hop recommendations from the NYT’s The Daily, the Five and OAN conspire about the Taylor Swift psyop, and Tim Pool cannot STAND people doubting Trump’s anti-vax Bona Fides. The MR Crew also watches another Climate Defiance action and talks with Travis from Birmingham about the greater context of a vote for president, Ricky from San Diego dives into Biden’s support for genocide, and Penn Jillette pulls a good take out of his hat. Terrance from Laguna Beach discusses getting involved in pro-Palestinian organizing, plus, your calls and IMs!

Happy Monday! Sam speaks with Wendy Parmet, professor of law, public policy, and urban affairs at Northeastern University, to discuss her recent book Constitutional Contagion: COVID, the Courts, and Public Health. First, Sam runs through updates on the continued expansion of Israel’s war on Gaza, Israel and Co.’s response to the ICJ ruling by cutting funding to UN Aid groups, the Senate immigration deal, the impeachment of Secretary Mayorkas, Donald Trump’s rape case, and Texas’ secession, before parsing through Nancy Pelosi’s recent allegations that pro-Palestine protesters are just Putin-paid propagandists. Wendy Parmet then joins, diving right into the concept of public health policy, how policymakers assess the impact of their work on broader populations, and the concept of Salus populi suprema lex. Stepping back, Professor Parmet walks Sam through the factors that influence US public health policy, and how those have evolved over the last couple of centuries, first looking to the 19th Century US’s defining element of the institution of slavery, before parsing through the public health policy from vaccine mandates to sanitary measures and food quality regulations that thrived on the state and local levels, and the overwhelming belief in the superiority of common (white) welfare to individual rights. Moving into the 1900s, Parmet explores the decision of Jacobson v. Massachusetts which affirmed the state’s right to mandate vaccinations under criminal consequences, how the era’s rampant epidemics influenced the decision, and looks to the impact of WW2 and the New Deal on the understanding of rights, before tackling the evolution of individual, corporate, and religious rights’ supremacy over regulation during the second half of the century. Wendy and Sam then expand on this as they move into the 21st Century, tackling the mass politicization of the courts, the emergence of the Federalist Society, the Roberts Court’s belief in individualism, and the culmination of the GOP’s attack on the administrative state, assessing how these elements served to undermine and gut the state of US public health, coming to a head with the COVID-19 pandemic. Wrapping up, Professor Parmet tackles the current moment in US public health, and the impact of the recent decimation of the US public health system on our already fraying social contract.

And in the Fun Half: Sam admires the GOP disarray caused by Biden completely capitulating to their immigration policy, talks with Ashley from Vermont about the aptly named IRS leaker Charles Littlejohn, Katrina from NoLa discusses being doxxed by Congresspeople (specifically, Majorie Taylor Greene), and Sean from Washington highlights the pro-Palestinian organizing going on in the NEA and AFT. Sam also highlights the insanity of the GOP going all-in on this bogus Texas secession schtick, Matt from South Texas discusses Texas, and Greta from Upstate NY explores the problems of voting for Biden. Matt Schlapp ponders the horrors of a world where he's held accountable, plus, your calls and IMs!

It's Casual Friday! Sam and Emma speak with Heather Digby Parton, contributing writer at Salon.com and proprietor of the blog Hullabaloo, to round up the week in news. First, Sam and Emma run through updates on the International Court of Justice’s decision in South Africa’s genocide case against Israel, Biden’s cratering popularity, Trump’s torpedoing of an immigration deal, Biden’s environmental policy, Matt Gaetz’s ethics investigation, Texas’ secession, and Gov. Whitmer’s Michigan policy, before parsing through South Africa and others’ initial reactions to the ICJ’s provisional decisions made against Israel. Digby then joins, diving right into the devolution of Donald Trump over Biden’s presidency, tackling mainstream media’s hesitancy to cover it, and Nikki Haley’s successful undermining of Trump’s status within the GOP, despite his continual cucking of every other GOP candidate. Next, Digby, Emma, and Sam assess Biden’s irrational commitment to the ideology of Bibi Netanyahu, before wrapping up with the likely sacrifice of Mike Johnson, and the chaos brewing between the GOP and the federal government with Texas’ refusal of direct SCOTUS orders.

And in the Fun Half: Sam and Emma parse through the specifics of the ICJ’s provisional orders to Israel, whether Israel will even abide by them, and how the decision provides a chance to reframe the conversation around the genocide in the West, also touching on some fake reports that came out of Israel in the wake of 10/7. Next, they look down south as they watch Ken Paxton attempt to defend Texas’ independent control over the border, with other GOP Governors toeing the line between supporting fascism and not violating the Constitution. Tim Pool gets mad that his guests keep threatening violence, and Peter Navarro gets sentenced, plus, your IMs!

It's another EmMajority Report Thursday! She speaks with Juliet Hooker, professor of political science at Brown University, to discuss her recent book Black Grief/White Grievance: The Politics Of Loss. Then, she speaks with Zachary Foster, proprietor of the website Palestine Nexus, to discuss the events on the ground in Israel and Gaza. First, Emma runs through updates on the UAW’s endorsement of Joe Biden, Israel’s siege on Gaza, the ICJ’s impending decision on Israel’s genocide, Senate and House politics, GOP fascism, and an Argentinian general strike, before parsing through Greg Abbott’s standoff with the US government, Joe Biden, and the Supreme Court over border control, and Joe Biden’s incredible willingness to capitulate. Julie Hooker then joins, diving right into her discussion of grief and grievance, and what distinguishes the pain and loss suffered under oppression, from the self-victimization and feelings of loss felt by the oppressor as equality, using moments like January 6th and the Black Lives Matter movement to contextualize this within US politics, and to highlight the grave danger to democracy that is White grievance. Next, Professor Hooker steps back and explores how Black people – largely women – are the ones forced to defend against the threat of White grievance to democracy, such as the fights for enfranchisement, student loan relief, and more. Zachary Foster then dives into his work at Palestine Nexus, and the central importance of preserving Palestinian history and culture in a world that is constantly seeking to silence and destroy it. Next, Foster steps back and walks Emma through the evolution of Palestinian identity, with documents both within the Arab world and the West referring to the Palestinian people and land as such beginning in the late 19th Century, well before the establishment of Israel, and solidly as a pre-Zionist identity. Foster and Emma then walk through the evolution of the Zionist project and its impact on the Palestinian people, with a minimal presence through the turn of the century and into the 1900s, only for the end of the British mandate and the rise of Hitler in Germany to fast track the self-proclaimed settler-colonial project. Expanding on this, Foster tackles the influence of European nationalism (and the exclusion of Jews from this process) on both forcing Zionist emigration from Europe and inspiring the settler-colonial tactics that followed, seeing the ethnic cleansing of some 750k Palestinians at the onset of the Nakba in 1948, and continuing throughout the next few years, before looking to the 1967 war, and Israel’s resulting occupation of the West Bank, Gaza, and the Golan Heights. After summarizing the ongoing occupation as a 56-year process of expulsion, land confiscation, destruction of infrastructure, and active disenfranchisement, Zachary and Emma wrap up the interview by looking at South Africa’s ICJ case against Israel, and the Zionist project’s absurdly narrow attempt to redefine genocide.

And in the Fun Half: Emma is joined by Brandon Sutton as they parse through Elon Musk and Ben Shapiro’s presentation on the importance of Twitter in fighting AGAINST (?!?!) antisemitism, Elon’s added Mr. Beast conspiracy, and talk with Jacob from Flint about the emergence of Gretchen Whitmer. Stephen from Alabama does some media critique, and the MR Crew discusses the radical evolution of Greta Thunberg and the UAW’s endorsement of Joe Biden, plus, your calls and IMs!

It's Hump Day! Sam and Emma speak with KJ Boyle, research assistant with The Revolving Door Project, to discuss his recent piece in The New Republic entitled "Donald Trump Is No Friend to the Working Class." Then, they speak with Prem Thakker, politics reporter at The Intercept, to discuss his recent reporting on the use of chemical weapons on pro-Palestine demonstrators at Columbia University. And THEN, they are joined by David Bedar, history teacher and member of the Newton Teacher's Association (NTA), to discuss the teacher's union ongoing strike efforts. First, Sam and Emma run through updates on Donald Trump’s New Hampshire win, US strikes on Yemen and Iraq, fracturing among the House and Senate GOP, mass layoffs, Sweden’s NATO pitch, Ukraine’s defensive, and US abortion travel bans, before parsing through Nikki Haley’s response to her concrete loss in New Hampshire and Donald Trump’s response to her. KJ Boyle then joins, diving right into his assessment of the incredible flourishing of the US labor movement under President Biden – particularly coming out of Donald Trump’s administration – despite some pushback. Boyle tackles Donald Trump’s very typical GOP approach to the labor wing of his administration, appointing CEOs and union-busting lawyers to the DOL and NLRB, before stepping back to assess Biden’s appointments in Jennifer Abruzzo at the NLRB, and Julie Su as Secretary of Labor, and their importance in pushing us towards a return to the Joy Silk doctrine, and a re-establishment of US labor rights. Prem Thakker, next, walks Sam and Emma through Columbia University’s long history of student activism and divestment campaigns, beyond and including Israel, before running through a briefer summary of the recent developments on Columbia’s campus in the wake of October 7th, which have seen the disbanding of multiple pro-Palestinian student organizations and the rampant discrimination and harassment of Palestinian students and allies. Thakker wraps up with the recent attack on a Colombia protest by alleged Zionist students, and Colombia’s refusal to address the incident without extreme pressure. David Bedar joins from the picket line in Newton, MA, as he walks through the basis for the NTA’s strike in the city and the Mayor’s complete mismanagement of the education sector, from underfunding and understaffing to poor pay and absurdly poor family policy, before wrapping up the show by walking through the incredibly important role of the Newton community and alumni network in standing with the Teachers’ association, and what those of us outside of the community can do to help.

And in the Fun Half: Sam and Emma discuss Jimmy Dore’s new alchemical grift (it’s just Silver Hawkery), Donald Trump shouts out Q in the year 2024 (and it works), and Nikki Haley’s subdued performance among the best possible electorate for her. Barbara Lee kills her debate response to Adam Schiff over calls for a ceasefire, the MR Crew watches another Israeli dissident speak out against their country’s failures and abuses, and Charlie Kirk downgrades his bigotry to purely speculative. Fox calls out the “media training” of the “Vice President” and the super mean statements by “snowflake” AOC, and the MR Crew walks through developments in the Child Tax Credit, plus, your calls and IMs!

It's News Day Tuesday! Sam and Emma break down the biggest headlines of the day. First, Sam and Emma run through updates on Donald Trump’s widening lead heading into the New Hampshire primaries, the Supreme Court’s decision on the Supremacy clause and Texas’ border policy, Israel’s ongoing genocide in Gaza, the US and UK’s continuing strikes against Yemen, the US’ growing labor consciousness, Senate policy, and developments in the US tax game, before watching Nikki Haley hold those darn Media Trumpers accountable on Fox and Friends. Next, they parse through Shawn Fain’s recent statements calling for preparations for a General Strike in 2028 (with an apt callback to the Reagan era), and explore the Democrats’ minimal gains from their ongoing capitulation to the GOP’s radical immigration policy. Next, they get into updates out of Gaza, including Israel’s complete decimation of Gaza’s infrastructure and cultural institutions, their flailing military campaign, and why the American people are so “obsessed” with this issue, also touching on Netanyahu’s ongoing battle with the families of Israeli hostages. Wrapping up, Sam and Emma tackle Biden and the UK’s ongoing battle with the Yemeni Houthis, the absurd and destructive futility of the tactic, and tackle Israel’s recent meeting with the EU over their plans for a prison island for Palestinians.

And in the Fun Half: Sam and Emma watch Joe Rogan kindly platform an up-and-coming content creator (it’s just him falling for fake news again), John from San Antonio calls in to discuss Greg Abbott’s rejection of the Supreme Court’s recent decision on Texas’ border wall and walks through some previews of state-level Democratic primaries. They also reflect on Nancy Mace’s endorsement of Donald Trump, and Dave Rubin defends people’s right to spread blatant lies about him as long as it’s fascist, plus, your calls and IMs!

Happy Monday! Sam and Emma speak with Elie Mystal, justice correspondent at The Nation, to discuss the oral arguments that took place at the Supreme Court last week for Loper Bright Enterprises v. Raimondo. First, Sam and Emma run through updates on DeSantis putting a dunce hat on his dunce hat, Netanyahu healthily surviving a no-confidence vote, the growing death toll in Gaza, the US’ “totally not a war” in Yemen, Donald Trump’s widening lead over Nikki Haley, auto union organizing, House tax policy, and Mike Johnson’s speakership, before reflecting on DeSantis’ evolution from Trump fanatic, to Trump heretic, to Trump cuck. Elie Mystal then dives right into the history of SCOTUS’ Chevron Doctrine, with the right championing in the 1980s as Reagan attempted to use his cabinet to cripple the relatively nascent administrative state, and the unanimous decision by the Court to delegate the reading of administrative law to the experts in the agencies, rather than allowing for themselves and lower court judges to dictate the meaning of all legislation. After briefly running through this decision’s relationship to the budding institution of the modern administrative state, and why – despite the conservative origin of the case – it is hugely important for the functioning of government and democracy as a whole, Mystal tackles the massive role the Chevron Doctrine has played since it was established in 1984, deciding some 17,000 cases, and the complete legal chaos that would be caused by overturning it. Elie and Emma also touch on the asymmetrical nature of this fight – with the difficulty of governance further inflamed by the ease of obstruction – and parse through the various ideological stances of the conservative Supreme Court justices that are likely to decide this case, before wrapping up with the future of the fight for the administrative state, why it might lie (unfortunately) in Congress.

And in the Fun Half: Sam and Emma watch Tim Scott campaign in the streets and the sheets for the Vice Presidency, parse through the continuing evolution of Israel’s genocide in Gaza, and the Biden Administration’s refusal to acknowledge the rhetoric coming out of the Israeli government. Michigan voters parse through their major issues with Biden ahead of 2024, Jeffrey from Memphis discusses voting in his first election, and Sam from Portland dives into his city’s housing crisis. Donald Trump basks in DeSantis’ failure, the MR Crew discusses the harrowing impact of the US’ growing abortion bans, Tim Pool blows his chance with Trump Jr., and Sarah from Newton explores the ongoing Newton teachers’ strike. Jeff from Iowa inspires a long conversation on the electoral college and the politics of voting, plus, your calls and IMs!

It's Casual Friday! Emma speaks with Alex Pareene, contributing editor at The New Republic and co-host of The Politics of Everything podcast, to round up the week in news. Then, she is joined by Francesca Fiorentini, host of the Bitchuation Room! First, Emma runs through updates on Biden’s war in the Middle East, the backlash to that policy, Netanyahu’s “From the River to the Sea” proclamation, the growing Gaza death toll, Mexico and Chile’s new request for an ICC probe into Israel, Biden’s student loan relief, Congress’ continuing resolution and CTC, and Washington state’s take on Donald Trump’s ballot access, before diving into the recent revelations around the deadly inaction from the Uvalde Police in the Robb Elementary mass shooting in 2022. Alex Pareene then joins, diving into Democrats’ ongoing attempt to pin the accountability for Biden’s war in the Middle East on Brett McGurk, Biden’s NSC Coordinator for the Middle East, and touches on Biden’s recent statements on his strikes on Yemen as a perfect encapsulation of US foreign policy. Alex and Emma also parse through Bibi Netanyahu’s recent statements outrightly rejecting the idea of a Palestinian state, the growing violence in the Middle East, and the hollowness of many 2-state solution arguments. Wrapping up, Pareene touches on Biden’s weak support as the 2024 election cycle begins, also exploring results coming out of the Iowa caucuses, and what the hell the non-Trump candidates are fighting for. Francesca Fiorentini also joins, as she discusses her upcoming shows on the West Coast (including an Emma Vigeland appearance), her Seinfeldian experiences doing stand-up, and grappling with the liberal zionist desire to have their genocide and perpetrate it too. Wrapping up, they watch Matt Lee school the US State Department Spokesperson on Israel’s controlled demolition of Gaza University.

And in the Fun Half: Emma watches Nikki Haley attempt to do a slavery revisionism revision only to be reminded of slavery by Jake Tapper, and Candace Owens inspires a grand debate on what category of killer Dorothy (Wizard of Oz) falls under. Donald Trump gets desperate on Hannity, and Goya’s CEO and ND Governor Burgum remind the Fox audience of Trump’s qualifications, plus, your IMs!

It's another EmMajority Report Thursday. She speaks with Marco Fonseca, instructor in Latin American and International Studies at the York University's Glendon campus, to discuss the circumstances surrounding new Guatemalan president Arévalo's swearing-in. Then, she speaks with Minneapolis City Councilmember Robin Wonsley, to discuss her upcoming goals for her 2nd term in office and her support of a ceasefire resolution that's in front of the council. First, Emma runs through updates on the US striking Yemen for the fourth time, Pakistan’s military response to Iran, Israel’s continuing devastation of Gaza, the politics of the US Senate, Hakeem Jeffries’ defense of Summer Lee, and SCOTUS’ challenge of the Chevron Doctrine, before watching Anthony Blinken ponder the passive tragedy of the ongoing genocide in Gaza. Marco Fonseca then dives right into Bernardo Arévalo de Leon finally assuming the office of the Guatemalan presidency, first walking through his role in Semilla – a party born out of Guatemala’s 2015 anti-corruption protests – and as the son of Juan Jose Arévalo – Guatemala’s first democratically elected president and social and labor icon. Professor Fonseca then steps back to look at the long period of corrupt right-wing rule that proceeded the election of Bernardo Arévalo, beginning in the early 1990s under President Álvaro Arzú with the rise of the “Pact of the Corrupt” in Congress establishing the dominance of the militant neoliberal political class, moving through the 2014-15 revelations by CICIG about the deep corruption in the government and the following backlash that birthed Semilla, and wrapping up the story with the regressive Presidency of Jimmy Morales and Alejandro Giammettei’s failures during COVID. After briefly running through Bernardo Arévalo’s incredible candidacy, Marco gets into the massive political project from the establishment to stop him from assuming office, beginning in September of 2023 with the Public Ministry pushing an attempt to undermine the election authorities and annul the results, and continuing until a surprising move by the US to speak out against the overwhelming corruption in Guatemalan politics. Wrapping up, Fonseca tackles the ultimate swearing-in of Arévalo and the central role of indigenous organizers in making that happen. Robin Wonsley, Minneapolis City Councilmember, then jumps right into her political and organizing background, from the inspiration found in the material conditions of Minneapolis, through the Occupy and BLM movements, and culminating in the George Floyd protests in 2020, the year before her election. Expanding on this, she discusses the importance of political representation that fights for and with community organizers, particularly when it comes to combating political disaffection in a city dominated by a neoliberal establishment. Wrapping up, Councilmember Wonsley walks through the biggest fights she’s had in her first term in the council, from labor policy supporting ride-share drivers to climate change policy and rent control, as she runs for reelection.

And in the Fun Half: Emma is joined by Brandon Sutton and Matt Binder as they dive deep into an Israeli Spokesperson’s appearance on Channel 4 news, and the insistence of the Pro-Israeli establishment on refusing to acknowledge look at context that isn’t “October 7th” or the Holocaust, even when the topic is decades-long apartheid rule and an ongoing genocide. Flower Bro from San Fransisco calls in to chat third-party voting, the MR Crew admires the merchandising of the Trump Fan Art community, and Ron DeSantis continues to ride the anti-woke ripple, plus, your calls and IMs!

It's Hump Day! Sam and Emma speak with Joseph Jewell, professor and department head of black studies at the University of Illinois Chicago, to discuss his recent book White Man’s Work: Race and Middle-Class Mobility into the Progressive Era.

First, Sam and Emma run through updates on the Senate voting down Bernie’s call for releasing data on Israeli human rights violations, Hamas negotiations, devastation in Gaza, Iran’s strike on Pakistan, Biden’s redesignation of the Houthis as a terror group, the Chevron doctrine, the Child Tax Credit, the Jet Blue-Spirit merger, growing child labor issues in the US, and Trump’s newest court appearance, also parsing through the developments in the GOP primary coming out of the Iowa caucuses. Joseph Jewell then dives right into his work on the evolution of the race-class nexus in 19th Century America, and the continuing impact of these developments today, including the role of freed black men in Atlanta, Tejano police officers in San Antonio, and Chinese immigration workers in San Fransisco. Professor Jewell then looks to post-Civil War Atlanta, walking through the concentration of former slaves in manual labor and agriculture, and the impact on their freedom – alongside reconstruction’s social policies – in disrupting this racialized labor construction, with a particular impact in funneling Black men into federal work, including the postal service. Expanding on this, Professor Jewell walks through the following evolution of the reconception of these racialized labor stereotypes, restructuring around questioning the role of African Americans in Federal jobs and the trust they can hold in positions with important social functions. Next, Joseph walks Sam through the story of Tejano police officers in the San Antonio police forces over the 1800s, with the repeated blurring and brightening of the lines of whiteness and Tejano identity, with these officers serving an important role in rounding up Black and brown criminals, a quality which took on even more importance post-Civil War, despite rarely holding any power in the department. Expanding on this, they tackle the use of drug stereotypes in pushing back on the growing role of Tejanos in the public workforce, with a specific emphasis on the role of alcohol in Tejano communities. Professor Jewell then looks to the Bay Area and the role of Chinese-American workers – largely as Chinese translators – in US immigration offices, exploring the similar parallels in reframing the conversation around a stereotype that undermines trust in these non-white races to perform honestly in a white political system, emphasized in the firing of one Richard Williams, before wrapping up with the lasting legacy of each of these stories on the modern relationship between class and race in the US.

And in the Fun Half: Sam and Emma watch Bassem Youssef school PBD2 on the facts around the ethnic cleansing and genocide of Gaza, listen to Palestinian filmmaker Bisan Owda ask “what would you do,” and parse through the Biden Administration’s inhumane and unconditional support for Israel’s genocidal aims. Taylor Swift drives the right insane by having political opinions, Sam from Baltimore dives into the Maryland Senate race, and Patrick from Buffalo discusses global warming. Amber from Northern VA discusses the Democrat-GOP gulf on Trans issues and how to grapple with that when organizing, Malika from Raleigh gives her take on the obsession with youth politics, and the MR Crew chats about the shortcomings of the “voting privilege” conversation, plus, your calls and IMs!

It's News Day Tuesday! The MR Crew is back from the long weekend! They speak with Dave Weigel, author of the "Americana" newsletter at Semafor, to break down the results from last night's Iowa Republican Caucus.

First, Sam runs through updates on the expanding conflict in the Middle East, the massive pro-Palestine demonstrations across the globe this weekend, Israel’s ongoing assault on Gaza, Biden’s reelection campaign, congressional policy, and Texas’ expanding domination over US border policy, plus, Vivek is cake, and Ron DeSantis is humiliated coming out of the Iowa caucus. Dave Weigel then joins, jumping right into his experience at yesterday’s Iowa caucus and how the media presented Donald Trump’s decisive win. Weigel then looks to second place, as he walks through what the Iowa results mean for Ron DeSantis’ continuing struggle, voter turnout, and what the small gap between DeSantis and Nikki Haley in third shows about the right’s general lackluster feel for non-Trump candidates. Expanding on this, Dave and Sam preview the upcoming New Hampshire primary, looking at the vast differences between the two electorates, the importance of the race as an inevitable Haley home loss looms in the next primary, and how the Democrats are organizing around it. Next, they discuss Biden’s complete capitulation to a dwindling GOP majority in the House on Immigration, why it will do nothing to win him any votes, and everything to let Republicans define the debate, before wrapping up with how Biden’s support for Israel is dampening the minimal excitement for his campaign that exists. Sam expands on this as he parses through Texas’ recent move to block Border Patrol from rescuing migrants crossing the Rio Grande, resulting in the death of a mother and two kids, before touching on the regionalization of Israel’s war on Gaza, and the Biden Administration’s insistence on maintaining the obvious Kabuki theater around pressuring Israel to not do a genocide.

And in the Fun Half: Sam explores recent polling on US citizens’ preference between a functioning democracy and an economy, a caller asks about swaying his pro-Israel parents, and thought-leaders Tommy Tuberville and Larry Kudlow discuss the hoax of Climate Change, which is a very real threat from China. Christian from Grand Rapids discusses mobilizing for electoral issues, Matt Walsh talks about the absurdity of scientists being able to do science, the Sunrise movement meets Donald Trump, and Marty from the Amish Country walks through his experience at this weekend’s march for Palestine in DC and his thoughts on the Cop City-IDF connection. Kowalski from Nebraska dives into the unprecedented horrors of Climate Change, plus, your calls and IMs!

It's Casual Friday! Sam and Emma speak with Osita Nwanevu, contributing editor at the New Republic, to discuss his most recent piece on free speech and to round up the week in news.

Also, David Feldman joins us! First, Sam and Emma run through updates on the US-UK strikes on Houthi targets in Yemen, Israel’s defense at the Hague, Donald Trump’s defense in NYC, Bernie’s new foreign policy resolution, the child tax credit, the mutiny against Mike Johnson, and DeSantis’ DeMoralization, also touching on the right’s idiotic attempt to pin the Boeing crashes on DEI and wokeness. Osita Nwanevu then joins, looking at the US and UK’s recent bombing of Yemen as another theater in Israel’s ever-expanding war on Gaza, also walking through the justifiable political maneuver the Houthis were engaging in, and Biden’s ongoing attempt to undermine his presentation as the stabilizing, empathetic Presidential candidate heading into 2024’s election. Next, they parse through some of South Africa’s early arguments against Israel at the International Court of Justice, with a particular focus on the rhetoric coming out of the Israeli government and military, before wrapping up with an assessment of the US and Biden Administration’s dwindling credibility. David Feldman then joins for some good-natured ribbing, an in-depth analysis of Iowan politics, and an identity crisis, as he pitches his new podcast alongside religious conversion therapy.

And in the Fun Half: Sam and Emma look at some of the early arguments at the ICJ, watch Donald Trump use Biden’s wars to pitch himself as the sane candidate, and Greg Abbott laments his inability to shoot migrants. Laura Ingraham presents her obtuse angle on Biden’s border deal, Matt Walsh isn’t gay, Aaron from LA highlights some labor action coming out of CA, and Marion from Memphis discusses the value of child labor, plus, your calls and IMs!

It's another EmMajority Report Thursday! Emma speaks with Ussama Makdisi, professor of history at the University of California, Berkeley, to discuss the subject matter of his book Age of Coexistence: The Ecumenical Frame and the Making of the Modern Arab World. Then, she speaks with Rune Moller Stahl, assistant professor in political economy at Copenhagen Business School, to discuss his recent piece in Jacobin entitled "Tesla Has Bitten Off More Than It Can Chew by Picking a Fight With Swedish Unions." First, Emma runs through updates on Israel’s ongoing ethnic cleansing of Gaza, the UAW’s expansion, the GOP primary, GOP policy, and GOP politics, before touching on some of the opening statements at the International Court of Justice. Ussama Makdisi then joins, diving right into the deep historical context of the case against Israel at the ICJ, looking first at the roots of Zionism in the 1800s as a response to intense antisemitism in Europe, and as a project that took inspiration from Europe in its nationalist, colonialist solution. Expanding on this, Professor Makdisi explores the prevalence of multi-religious coexistence across the Middle East in that era, particularly between Arabs and Jews, how that extended to Palestine, and the culture of denialism around both pre-Nakba Palestinian culture, and the Nakba itself, before touching on the roots of said issues in the west’s Islamophobia, and antisemitism. After briefly touching on the inspiration Israel takes from the white supremacist regimes of South Africa and Jim Crow USA, Ussama and Emma discuss the establishment of Israel within the context of Europe’s greater colonial project in the Middle East, before wrapping up the interview by touching on South Africa’s case at the ICJ.  Rune Moller Stahl then walks Emma through the evolving multi-industry and multi-national strike against Tesla in the Nordic countries, beginning with Tesla technicians walking off their jobs in demand of a collective agreement, before sympathy strikes swiftly spread across unions throughout Sweden, Denmark, Norway, and Finland. After expanding on the cultural divide between Elon Musk’s anti-union attitude and the Nordic model, Professor Stahl parses through the distinct roles of unions in the United States and Sweden, and how they differ in power, organizing, and action.

And in the Fun Half: Emma is joined by Brandon Sutton as they tackle John Fetterman’s turn as he speaks against South Africa’s case against Israel at the ICJ, Nick from Pittsburgh dives into political organizing in PA, Corey from Indianapolis discusses ZuckNuts, and Donald Trump gives a genuine answer on the GOP’s fanatical pro-life segments. PBD and Co. discuss yoga pants, Gage from Salt Lake City on the lingering presence of 1/6, and Armando in Portland tackles the DEI-Airline conspiracy. Chris Christie gets props from Trump, and it’s not for dropping out, plus, your calls and IMs!

Sam speaks with Alex Press, staff writer at Jacobin, to discuss her recent piece entitled "In 2023, the US Working Class Fought Back." Then, they speak with Bill McKibben, contributing writer at The New Yorker and founder of ThirdAct.org, to discuss how 2023 was the hottest year on record. First, Sam runs through updates on Israel’s direct statements of ethnic cleansing in front of Secretary Blinken, Trump’s attempted immunity case, tonight’s GOP debate, the government shutdown, Mayorkas’ potential impeachment, labor action, and free lunch, before listening to Trump’s attorney’s desperation in the face of literally any line of actual legal questioning. Alex Press then joins, diving right into the numbers behind 2023’s labor boom which saw some 500k workers striking – doubling 2022’s numbers (which doubled those of 2021) – with a particular boom in action in the union-sparse private sector. After walking through the influence of the COVID-19 pandemic on inspiring this post-crisis wave of labor action, Press steps back to explore the massive influence of the Chicago Teachers Union strike on the evolution of the US labor world, alongside movements like Occupy, Bernie Sanders’ 2016 campaign, and the 2020 uprisings, in shaping the current organizing movement. Next, Alex and Sam touch on the incredible moves made by the NLRB in 2023 – including Card Check lite – and what they’d like to see from the board moving forward, before wrapping up with her expectations on major strikes (and the influence of Shawn Fain’s UAW) heading into 2024. Then, Bill McKibben and Sam tackle the complete silence following 2023’s record-setting heat numbers, the overwhelming influence of “climate delayers” in US politics, and the fossil fuel industry’s 8-figure ad campaign to keep the US population on their side. After briefly expanding on the growth of both renewable energy and the extreme impacts of climate change in 2023, McKibben dives into the massive growth of US oil production and natural gas, the greenhouse explosion it has been causing, and the pressing need for Biden to make choices beyond the important changes in 2022’s Inflation Reduction Act. Wrapping up, Bill emphasizes the threat of growing US industry and the influence of Big Oil heading into 2024.

And in the Fun Half: Sam watches as Blinken continues to bend the knee to Israel on the world stage, Gideon Levy unpacks the horrors Israel is currently inflicting on Gaza, and Tim Pool goes to bat for Boeing and the private plane industry as they remain under threat by DEI. Tony from California discusses using the blueprint of the Dobbs decision to undermine the right, Elliot from Washington dives into Epic Games’ destruction of Bandcamp, and Tulsi endorses the ‘Free’ Speech of Twitter. Dave Rubin asks if it’s racist to be racist if they’re immigrants, plus, your calls and IMs!

It's News Day Tuesday! Sam and Emma break down the biggest headlines of the day. We'll also be joined by Mark Joseph Stern (@mjs_dc). First, Sam and Emma run through updates on Donald Trump’s ballot appeal, Blinken’s visit to Israel, the mass arrest at Pro-Palestine protests in NYC, GOP infighting and a looming government shutdown, global warming, Nikki Haley’s rise, the battle over Mayorkas, and Twitter’s journalist purge, before diving into Biden supporters’ problematic response to a Pro-Palestine protest. Mark Joseph Stern then joins, diving right into the focus on the 14th Amendment’s Section III in Donald Trump’s ongoing ballot-access case, with both Colorado and Maine citing it for their exclusion of him from both primary and general election ballots, parsing through the details of the clause, and the dependence of a congressional vote to reallow any insurrectionists to run for office. Expanding on this, Stern parses through the various legal (and more likely, political) avenues Trump’s legal team could take, and where the various conservative – yet supposedly originalist – Supreme Court justices might land. Next, they look into the ongoing Supreme Court case around Idaho’s near-total abortion ban, including SCOTUS overturning a stay on the ban, and how the ban weaponizes punitive measures against both doctors and patients. Sam and Emma also cover Mike Johnson’s total ripoff of Kevin McCarthy’s speakership, a new ruling on the gig economy, and Twitter’s most recent round of anti-journalist suspensions.

And in the Fun Half: Sam and Emma tackle the importance of voting this year – with a shout to Olayemi Olurin’s recent video – Missouri’s Secretary of State attempts to turn whataboutism into a legal argument to ban Biden from the ballot, and the crew tackles Israeli politician Ofer Cassif joining South Africa’s case charging Israel with crimes of genocide. Alex Jones, Jimmy Dore, and Eric Adams give their low-level supervillain takes on immigration, and Donald Trump goes on Lindell TV to take down the idea of climate change. Miguel from Arkansas discusses the role of Kamala Harris moving forward, Mel from Texas gives some updates on the evolution of college admissions amidst attacks on higher education, and Jon Does from Tampa and Michigan tackles military service and Biden’s electoral problems, respectively. The Tim Pool compound goes Neverland Ranch, plus, your calls and IMs!

Happy Monday! Sam and Emma speak with Neil Kraus, professor of political science at the University of Wisconsin, River Falls, to discuss his recent book The Fantasy Economy: Neoliberalism, Inequality, and the Education Reform Movement. First, Sam and Emma run through updates on Israel’s continuing strikes in Lebanon, the growing death count in Gaza, Congress averting a government shutdown and funding wars, Medicare, Wayne LaPierre’s reign over the NRA, and another brewing Boebert scandal, before parsing through the new footage from January 6 (now three years out), and the evolution of the GOP’s attempt to spin it. Neil Kraus then joins, diving right into the fantasy of the neoliberal consensus that has reshaped the economy, and our education system, in the interests of corporations and the wealthy, exploring, in particular, how it has manufactured an antagonistic relationship between the public and our education system. Expanding on this, Professor Kraus tackles the myths that the political class has perpetrated against education, pinning the blame on the system for everything from employment and wages to failing industry, before stepping back to tackle the failures of these myths, and how they obscure the role of general economic conditions. After assessing the neoliberal-libertarian coalition in the attack on public and higher education, Neil, Sam, and Emma discuss whether we are at the end of the neoliberal consensus, and what it will take to swing the political fight over education.

And in the Fun Half: Sam and Emma discuss Donald Trump’s theories on magnets, Obamacare, and the Civil War – each growing in concern – watch Mehdi Hasan’s final sign-off on NBC, and get another British masterclass on the weaponization of white feminism. Brett Weinstein and Dave Rubin discuss the trauma of being blocked by Elon Musk, Cory from Branton breaks Sam’s heart, and Rocko in the UK expands on the implications of insurrection, plus, your calls and IMs!

It's Casual Friday, the first of 2024! Sam and Emma round up the short week in news, joined by Ryan Grim.

First, Sam and Emma run through updates on Israel’s expanding war ambitions, evolving US involvement (and the potential for conditioned aid), the US economy, Elon Musk’s lawsuit against the NLRB, the GOP impeachment bit, and the trillions in untaxed profits among the country’s capitalist, before parsing through the right’s continued commitment to the anti-covid schtick. Ryan Grim then joins, as he reflects on US State Department Spox. Matthew Miller’s response to Grim’s recent questions on South Africa’s suit against Israel over their crimes of genocide in Gaza, and the likelihood of State Department officials becoming implicated, before they step back and walk through the greater basis for South Africa’s case, and where the US' complicity comes into play. Expanding on this, they walk through the cratering opinion of Israel both domestically and internationally, the incredible media bubble that the Israeli population lives under, and the intense sphere of IDF control around any news coming out of Israel or Palestine, before briefly touching on the extent of the political cost Biden is willing to acknowledge (much less respond to). Wrapping up, they tackle the future of GOP Congressional control amid their impeachment proceedings and discuss the ongoing democratic crisis in Pakistan.

And in the Fun Half: Sam and Emma watch Dave Rubin latch onto the right’s current anti-Ivy League moment in the media, unpack Jimmy Dore’s most recent attempt to kill people, and tackle Nikki Haley’s ongoing struggle with “answering questions.” Christian from Grand Rapids discusses Hill Harper’s senate campaign, Danny in Texas dives into MR’s evolution, and Chris from Northern VA challenges Sam and Emma over their electoral stances heading into 2024. It's an EmMajority Report Thursday, the first of 2024! She speaks with Dr. Sydney Calkin, senior lecturer in the School of Geography at Queen Mary University in London, to discuss her recent book Abortion Pills Go Global: Reproductive Freedom across Borders. Then, she speaks with Francis Boyle, professor of international law at the University of Illinois, to discuss South Africa filing a case against Israel at the International Court of Justice (ICJ) against Israel over its actions in Gaza.

First, Emma runs through updates on the US taking actions against the Houthis over the conflict in the Red Sea, Israel’s mounting death toll in Gaza, the US’ reaction to South Africa’s charge of Genocide against Israel, the murder of a New Jersey Imam, Ilhan Omar’s attempt to block Saudi and UAE arms sales, the Epstein files, Donald Trump’s corruption, Lina Khan’s FTC, the DOJ vs. Texas, and DeSantis anti-vax administration, before parsing through Joy Reid’s recent interview with a Palestinian American member of the Biden Admin who resigned in protest. Sydney Calkin then joins, diving right into general perceptions of the illegal abortion industry, with generally violent pictures coming to mind, and how that contrasts with the reality of countries where black market access to abortion pills like Mifepristone and Misoprostol allows women to rely on restricted drugs to perform generally safe, at home abortions. Calkin then walks through the role of the abortion pill in a post-Roe v. Wade United States, playing a major role in states both with and without abortion access, before expanding the picture as she looks to the pill’s role in recent reforms in Poland, the Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland. Next, Sydney walks Emma through her particular interest in the illegal cross-border dealing of this drug, before analyzing the central role it played in redefining what abortion could look like, and wrapping up with a quick assessment of the continuing fight for reproductive rights. Francis Boyle then runs through a quick background on the UN’s International Court of Justice and the criminal suit South Africa has brought against Israel over their genocide of Palestinians, exploring his personal history as the first lawyer to win a case on genocide at this court, and why precedent suggests South Africa has a strong chance of winning. After parsing through the difference between the ICJ and the ICC – the latter of which has a history of failing Palestinians – and what this suit means for both Israel and South Africa, Francis and Emma discuss John Kirby’s diminishment of the case, and explore the active complicity of the US government per the ICJ’s statutes. Boyle wraps up with a quick analysis of the relevant legal text and assesses the expected timeframe of the case.

And in the Fun Half: Emma is joined by Brandon Sutton and Matt Binder as they tackle the recently released Epstein documents, including a feature of fan-favorite Alan Dershowitz, watch Pope of the Jews go after President Gay, and listen to Dan from Oceanside discuss the future of Baby Boomer politics. Dave from Jamaica calls in for his takes on Ben Shapiro’s attacks on former Harvard president Claudine Gay, Tim Pool revises Nikki Haley’s Civil War revisionism, and the MR Crew reflects on the absurdity of caring about citation practices as a proxy for genocide, plus, your calls and IMs!

It's Hump Day! Sam and Emma speak with Trita Parsi, executive vice president at the Quincy Institute, to discuss the state of play in Israel/Gaza nearly 3 months after October 7th. Then, they're joined by Paul Ortiz, professor of history at the University of Florida, to discuss how unions in Florida have been pushing back against Gov. Ron DeSantis's draconian anti-labor policy in the state.

First, Sam and Emma run through updates on the recent attack on Iran’s memorial for General Soleimani that killed 100, Israel’s drone strike in Beirut, Bernie’s call to block additional funding for Israel, the Fed’s case against Menendez, the House GOP’s consolidation around Trump as their majority thins, Texan fascism, and the Ivy president debacle, before parsing through Israel’s absurd escalation of their ongoing conflict to the wider region of the Middle East. After briefly tackling the growing indictments against Senator Bob Menendez, Trita Parsi joins to discuss Israel expanding its offensive to Beirut and Damascus alongside the unclaimed terror attack, all serving to reinforce Israel’s desire to bring this conflict onto the regional stage. Expanding on this, Parsi discusses Israel’s apparent tact of provoking a military response from Iran, or a greater escalation from Hezbollah, and why that hinges on the US’ unconditional support for Israel’s disproportionate responses. Next, Trita, Sam, and Emma parse through what this potential escalation means for direct US military action, including the clear alignment of Houthi attacks on US troops with Israel’s ongoing ethnic cleansing of Gaza, and what it means for Israel’s multi-decade attempt to inspire war between the US and Iran. Wrapping up, Parsi looks at the Biden Administration’s unwavering support for this conflict, and whether there’s any hope for his electoral coalition moving forward. Paul Ortiz then joins, as he walks through the history of the United Faculty of Florida, formed in the 1970s in response to decades of attacks against Floridian educators over criticizing the American right or supporting progressive causes, and contextualizes their current work within the Florida Education Association. After expanding on the ongoing bout of attacks against educational freedom by Ron DeSantis’ administration, with help from Chris Rufo, Ortiz dives into the union’s emphasis on the social justice model of organizing, using community ties and interaction to bolster their intersectional approach to supporting their teachers amid ongoing attacks, before wrapping up with an assessment of UFF’s incredible success in fighting back against fascism, and the hope that lies in the students they support.

And in the Fun Half: Sam and Emma watch Israel’s telling response to South Africa initiating a suit against them over crimes of genocide in the International Criminal Court, Michael Knowles pleads with his followers to make Nazi propaganda out of beloved animated children’s characters, and Tim Pool reflects on the pre-Mohammad era of humanity. Aaron Rodgers puts his bad foot in his mouth over the Epstein list, Nick from Michigan discusses pressuring Biden from the left (and the importance of the Democratic primaries in doing so), Aaron from Texas dissects the hypocrisy of Bill Maher, and Nick from Winnepeig on talking with conservatives, plus, your calls and IMs!

It's the first News Day Tuesday of 2024! The MR Crew is back to catch up on the biggest headlines of the last week. First, Sam and Emma run through updates on Israel’s continuing siege on Gaza, the Israeli government’s open admittance of ethnic cleansing, Biden’s bypassing of Congress in weapons sales to Israel, Biden’s low polling numbers, Donald Trump’s appeal of Colorado’s ballot ban, Kathy Hochul’s veto, the Epstein docs, NLRB rulings, and 2023’s dropping homicide rates, before tackling Trump’s fascist agenda and watching Fox’s take on the GOP nomination if Trump is indicted. After briefly running through the escalation of Israel’s war on Gaza to a regional conflict, they watch Nikki Haley attempt to toe the line between being an overt racist and insinuating the Civil War was about slavery, and Steve Bannon and Jack Posobiac tackle why the far-right won’t ever accept her (she’s a woman). Next, they parse through Biden’s incredibly poor polling numbers heading into 2024, what that means heading into the election, and why an electorally-focused agenda would focus more on economic policy rather than funding a genocide, before parsing through Israeli officials’ recent statements highlighting their overt policy of ethnic cleansing. Wrapping up, the MR team tackles the repressive media bubble inside Israel, the genocidal perspective of the Israeli public, and highlights the recent arrest of Tal Mitnick over his refusal to serve Israel’s genocidal regime.

And in the Fun Half: Sam and Emma watch Seth MacFarlane calmly parse through Bill Maher’s insane anti-vax rhetoric, Scott from Denver dives into voting for Marianne, and Karima, a Palestinian-American from Chicago, parses through the deep despair among the Palestinian diaspora and the devastating developments in Israel’s apartheid rule over the West Bank. Johnny from Melbourne dives into the Murdoch legacy, plus, your calls and IMs!
