The Majority Report with Sam Seder

It's Hump Day! Sam and Emma talk to Ken Klippenstein, investigative reporter at the Intercept, to discuss his recent reporting on the Pentagon's efforts to combat disinformation. Then they speak with Nick Turse, contributing writer at The Intercept, to discuss his recent series on Henry Kissinger.  First, Sam and Emma run through updates on the debt ceiling move to the House floor, the Sacklers getting shielded from accountability, conservatives’ turn against Chick-fil-A, Twitter’s plummeting valuation, and the SEIU’s new anti-trust suit, before watching Matt Gaetz walk through the Freedom Caucus’ plan to handle the debt ceiling, and what else could be pushed through. Ken Klippenstein then looks to his reports on the Pentagon’s propaganda efforts, with the recent (re)establishment of a “Perception Management Office,” first, walking through the Pentagon’s history of “perception management,” particularly coming out of the Vietnam war, and the complete public backlash to the eventual establishment of this office under the post-9/11 Bush administration. After touching on the lack of backlash to the recent re-establishment of this office, Ken, Sam, and Emma tackle the actual work this office engages in, and how they keep it undercover. Nick Turse then parses through his series on how Henry Kissinger’s level of imperial bloodshed was somehow even greater than previously believed. First, he establishes the incredible political and media network that Kissinger still maintains to this day, before stepping back to explore his work interviewing survivors and witnesses to Kissinger’s terror and the relentless violence he wrought in places like Cambodia. They also touch on Kissinger’s rampant and indiscriminate bombing of Cambodia in the context of initiating the Watergate scandal, and as the original blueprint for US counterinsurgency “forever wars.”

And in the Fun Half: Sam and Emma dive into the SEIU’s anti-trust suit against UPMC Hospital Network’s monopsony, the impeachment of Ken Paxton, and what it means that Trump is rallying behind him. They also look at the anti-LGBTarget rapper’s appearance on Fox, Candace Owens’ free-flowing fundamentalism, and Ken from South Carolina talks about MAMMOTH climate change solutions. Owen from LA discusses an impending real estate disaster, and Jesse Watters runs cover for DeSantis’ witness to war crimes. Sam from St. Augustine dives into the exploitative world of military recruitment, plus, your calls and IMs!

The MR Crew is back from the long weekend! It's Newsday Tuesday, as Sam and Matt break down the biggest headlines of the day.

It's Newsday Tuesday, as Sam and Matt break down the biggest headlines of the day. First, Sam runs through updates on the big winners from the debt ceiling deal (it’s just the defense contractors), the ongoing conflict between Russia and Ukraine, Uganda’s severe anti-LGBTQ policy, wage gains post-COVID, homeowner insurance in California, and some new GOP Presidential hopefuls. Then, Sam dives into Ken Paxton’s impending impeachment, with commentary from a Trump underling, and discusses what Trump stepping in to support Paxton, despite the GOP-backing of his expulsion, means moving forwards, before touching on the precedent Clarence Thomas might have set ahead of Paxton’s wife potentially serving on the jury. Next, they dive into the conclusion of the debt ceiling deal-making period, exploring the other options Biden had other than complete capitulation, Kevin McCarthy’s attempts to turn this into a W for him, and what (if anything) can still be done to hinder the deal. They also touch on the future of Biden’s Student Debt relief.

And in the Fun Half: Sam talks with Luke from St. Louis about the right’s obsession with seeming cool, Mark from Massachusetts parses through the GOP’s new presidential primary possibilities, and Alex from Georgia explores the complete meltdown that fundamentalists face when they question literally anything about themselves or their world view. They also watch Ron DeSantis attempt to defend his existence in the Presidential primaries, the right’s call to boycott Target, and the incredible creativity it has inspired. They wrap up with a conversation on AI, and talk with Glen from Atlanta on the evolving Cop City debate in City Council, plus, your calls and IMs!

It's Casual Friday! Sam and Emma host David Dayen, executive editor at the American Prospect to round up the week in news. Then, they're joined by David Feldman of The David Feldman Show!

First, Sam and Emma run through updates on the debt ceiling debacle, Trump’s masterful classified document gambit, Gov. Waltz stopping Minnesota’s legislative roll dead, and the corruption of Ken Paxton, before parsing through the Supreme Court’s dismantling of the EPA’s clean water act and the future it warns for the Chevron Doctrine. David Dayen then joins as he, Sam, and Emma walk through the ongoing non-negotiations that are also totally not about the debt ceiling, from why Democratic leadership is continuing to speak one way and act another, to the potential roles of a continuing resolution or sequester tactic. They also dive into the lawsuit against Biden and Yellen filed by a Boston Federal Employees’ Union, and why Biden will ultimately have to break a law (whether constitutional or congressional is up to him), before watching AOC’s response to Democrats legitimizing McCarthy’s tactics, and assessing the “red lines” of either party in this negotiation. David Feldman trades barbs with Sam and Emma before Sam realizes they’re just speaking to a computer.

And in the Fun Half: MR Emeritus (MR-itus?) Brendan Finn calls in to reflect on his time with MR and offer up Sam 72 boys to mentally train, the MR crew assesses DeSantis’ presidential tact now that he’s actually announced and Trump’s response to said announcement. They also touch on why the media refuses to cover Biden’s horrifying immigration policy, and touch on progressive arguments on the future of debt forgiveness, plus, your calls and IMs!

It's an EmMajority Report Thursday! She hosts Brendan Ballou, federal prosecutor and former Special Counsel for Private Equity in the Justice Department's Antitrust Division, to discuss his recent book Plunder: Private Equity's Plan To Pillage America. Then, she talks to freelance journalist Kim Kelly to discuss her recent piece in In These Times entitled "The Young Miners Dying Of An 'Old Man's Disease.'" First, Emma runs through updates on Ron’s DeBacle on Twitter Spaces as Trump’s lead grows, dwindling faith in Dianne Feinstein, the GOP’s repeal of Student Debt relief, January 6th sentencing, Medicaid coverage, and reports on Ken Paxton and from Ken Klippenstein, before diving into the incredible disaster that was Ron DeSantis’ presidential announcement on Twitter Spaces yesterday, from the unsurprising technical difficulties of Elon’s Twitter to DeSantis’ somehow overemphasizing his lack of charisma. Brendan Ballou then parses through what the hell private equity is, including their reliance on mass quantities of borrowed money, the quick turnover of the companies they purchase, and the ubiquitous presence of private equity across myriad industries, including those most central to our every day life (healthcare, infrastructure, communication). Next, Ballou walks through a few case studies of the decay wrought by private equity, looking at the Carlyle Group’s acquisition of ManorCare nursing homes and Sun Capital’s acquisition of Friendly’s, to demonstrate how private equity simultaneously cripples the capacities of the companies they purchase and shirk any accountability for the issues that come (whether that be the well-being of workers and patients or defaults and financial mismanagement). Wrapping up, they tackle the particular exploitation of pension funds by private equity groups, discuss private equity in relation to other labor issues in the US, and explore what can be done to push back. Kim Kelly then dives right into the rampant reemergence of Black lung amongst coal miners in central Appalachia, tackling why the disease disappeared after the 1977 mine safety act, and why the continuation of environmental and labor exploitation in the region has slowly exposed West Virginia and Kentucky miners to mass amounts of silica. After looking at the federal push for greater regulation, Kelly and Emma tackle the impact of union-busting in pushing these issues onto central Appalachia and wrap up by tackling what is being done to fight back.

And in the Fun Half: Emma is joined by Brandon Sutton and Matt Binder as they parse through the absurdly predictable failure that was Ron DeSantis’ campaign launch, and the incredible fodder it provided for Trump and his social media team. They also watch Jimmy Dore go all-in on the crypto-hawking game (just a few years late), Jason from Columbus has the Crew tackle a few important topics, and Emmit from Cleveland dives into the Supreme Court’s attack on environmental regulation. They also cover Nikki Haley’s floundering presidential campaign, and the hilarity coming out of the Texas statehouse, plus, your calls and IMs!

It's Hump Day! Sam and Emma host economist Nathan Tankus, proprietor of the Notes on the Crises newsletter, to discuss the debt ceiling negotiations. Then, they're joined by Jessica Valenti, author of the Abortion, Every Day newsletter on SubStack, to discuss the recent anti-aborton laws being passed in state legislatures across the country. First, Sam and Emma run through updates on the GOP’s increasing demands for cuts (and spending), student loan forgiveness, a collab between Tiny D and Tiny E, fascist legislation in South Carolina, Florida, and Montana, and Target’s response to homophobic violence at their stores, plus, John Roberts addresses concerns about internal Supreme Court ethics problems by assuring us it’ll be addressed internally. Nathan Tankus then joins, diving right into the complete incompetence within Democratic leadership that led up to this debt ceiling debacle, including the “lessons” Biden is taking from last decade’s debt ceiling debacle, and why they refused to make a plan B in case the obstructionist GOP obstructed. Next, he, Sam, and Emma tackle the balance between maliciousness and incompetence within both parties, before parsing through the unilateral actions Biden COULD take (including the platinum coin), and why Democrats love to manufacture their own failures. Jessica Valenti then shifts the conversation to the Republican attack on reproductive health, tackling the massive problems presented by the GOP’s “exceptions,” why, despite the discourse, they have little to no practical effect on actually getting vulnerable people abortions, and why taking them seriously only puts more lives in danger. After parsing through the particulars of Republican states’ legislative strategy, they look to the likelihood of a National Ban, and greater tactics of chipping away at reproductive freedom for all Americans. Wrapping up, they explore the relationship between attacks on reproductive healthcare and transgender healthcare, and reflect on two decades of failing Democratic messaging.

And in the Fun Half: Benny Jonhson gets schooled on Twitter spaces, Rep. Crane from Arizona makes a fool of himself in Congress, and Target concedes to violent homophobes, taking LGBTQ merch out of stores. Emma and Sam tackle Lauren Boebert’s recent anecdote in the wake of her divorce, and discuss alternative debt ceiling tactics, plus, your IMs!

It's News Day Tuesday! Sam and Emma break down the biggest headlines of the day. First, they run through updates on the subpoena of Donald Trump, E. Jean Carroll’s new charges against Trump, a vehicular strike on the White House, the slow acceptance of greedflation theory by economic elites, and Ron DeSantis’ police, also tackling Kevin McCarthy and Joe Biden agreeing on their desire to potentially agree to negotiate an agreement on the debt ceiling negotiation. Sam and Emma dive a little deeper into the absurd coverage of the greed factor in inflation, the lingering desire to make it seem like a fringe factor, and how to push the Fed to actually tackle this issue. They then parse through Minnesota’s incredible progress with a trifecta and a one-seat Senate majority, walking through the history of the DFL, the incredible pro-labor legislation they’re passing, and the importance of actually using power when you have it (*cough* national Democrats *cough*).

And in the Fun Half: MR has some technical troubles (totally unrelated to the gerontocratic control of the studio), they watch Newsmax talking heads demean Fox for following the same human rights laws that they – as residents of NYC – also must follow, and Ren from Oregon dives into the private debt issue in the US. Mike from Portland solves Sam’s computer issues, William from Portland reflects on the legacy of Michael Brooks, and Greg from Beaumont dives into tacit collusion, before Brian from Germany parses through some crazy attacks on mutual aid activism in North Carolina. Mississippi schools crack down on any non-normative gender expression, and Tusli runs to the defense of killer Daniel Penny, plus, your calls and IMs!

Happy Monday! Sam and Emma host Rosie Collington, Ph.D candidate at University College London, to discuss her recent book The Big Con: How The Consulting Industry Weakens Our Businesses, Infantilizes Our Governments, And Warps Our Economies, co-authored with Mariana Mazzucato. First, Sam and Emma run through updates on the debt ceiling fight, Biden’s plummeting polling (and why he still fares better than the GOP’s candidates), Minnesota’s gig work bill, Manchin sinking Julie Su’s candidacy, the NAACP travel advisory for Florida, the devastating death of an 8-year-old in border custody, and failing US intelligence at home and abroad, before diving into the Democratic party’s (and particularly their leadership’s) insistence on never having any real power. Rosie Collington then joins as she parses through the massive state of the management consulting industry in the US, with agencies like McKinsey, Boston Consulting Group, and Bain, working for both the regulatory (political) and industrial sides, and conning the public into believing they actually have a massive impact on the economy. She walks Sam and Emma through the evolution of the consulting-industrial complex, with the introduction of the Reaganomics of the 1980s in both reducing spending on welfare and shifting the distribution of it onto private industry, and the neoliberal establishment cementing this shift over the next couple of decades, with private companies slowly taking over not just the implementation, but the development of public policy in the US. After parsing through the rollout of the ACA under Obama, as well as stories like the East Palestine derailment and McKinsey’s role in the opioid crisis, as key examples of the failure of consulting’s control over the government, from the conflicts-of-interest in creates to the obscuration of responsibility for our democratic officials, Collington wraps up by tackling the role of elite institutions in laundering the reputation of consulting industries, and explores what actions the US government can take to protect democracy.

And in the Fun Half: Sam and Emma dive into AI’s role in the WGA and SAF strikes, with some help from Tesla stans, Moms for Liberty exemplifies the GOP’s exterminationist rhetoric, and Hitchen’s Ghost dives into his personal experiences with Killology experts. Ash from Southern Illinois reflects on the criminalization of a teacher’s trans acceptance, Dez from NJ discusses unionizing his workplace, and Emma reflects on mistakes made in reporting on a recent “Karen” story. DeSantis continues to flounder socially, and Tim Pool acts in his role as the final body in the reactionary right’s human centipede of (dis)information, plus, your calls and IMs!

It's Casual Friday! Sam and Emma host Ryan Grim, DC Bureau Chief at The Intercept, to round up the week in news. First, Sam and Emma run through updates on the Democratic Leadership’s abuse of Dianne Feinstein, the Supreme Court, Disney pulling their jobs from Florida, and Machaela Cavanaugh and Megan Hunt continuing to kill it on the Nebraska Senate floor. Ryan Grim joins as he, Sam, and Emma reflect on the history of the Biden and Obama administrations in debt ceiling fights, and the complete fear that should be held when they “negotiate” with Republicans. They tackle the likelihood of Biden invoking the 14th for the debt ceiling and why McCarthy would secretly love that, actually, before touching on the elite musings about how useful a little economic crisis would be. They also discuss the corruption behind keeping Dianne Feinstein in her seat, as well as Rudy Giuliani’s pardon scheme, and the lack of substance in the Durham investigation. Wrapping up, Ryan parses through his recent article on the US’ voluntary involvement in Yemen, despite what they had us believe, the failures of proxy warfare, and why the US’ paranoia as a failing superpower is pushing against peace, inflamed by China’s active brokering of peace.

And in the Fun Half: Sam and Emma discuss White Supremacist Marjorie Taylor Greene’s genuinely despicable denouncement of Jamaal Bowman, the reporting of an Illinois teacher to the police for having a single queer book, and the following politicization of it by the far-right. Matt Walsh and Michael Knowles theocratically fascist all over the place, and Megan Kelly comes for an already injured Fox News, plus, your calls and IMs!

It's an EmMajority Report Thursday! Emma makes her triumphant return from the West Coast. She speaks with Henry Grabar, staff writer at Slate, to discuss his recent book Paved Paradise: How Parking Explains The World. Then, she is joined by Marilyn Thompson, reporter at ProPublica, to discuss her recent reporting in South Carolina on Rep. James Clyburn. First, Emma runs through updates on the continuing attacks on Mifepristone, Illinois’ semi-auto ban, dwindling trust in the Supreme Court, DeSantis’ pending entrance into the Presidential race, Montana’s TikTok ban, and border patrol violence, also touching on the breaking news around Pelosi’s role in delaying Dianne Feinstein’s exit from the Senate, in the hopes of securing said seat for protégé Adam Schiff. Henry Grabar dives right into the absurdity of having a car-centric society, with land dominated by parking lots, where the constant question is “Why no parking?” He first tackles the base desire for free, convenient, and available parking, and the problems that each one of these elements creates, ultimately generating a lack of available parking in high-density areas and/or suburban sprawl, alongside the “if you build it [parking spots] they [more drivers needing to park] will come” nature of the issue. Next, Grabar walks Emma through the history of parking as a planning issue, beginning with the popularization of the Model-T at the start of the 20th Century, with the US ultimately settling on various requirements for the creation of parking alongside any new buildings, and how this, once again, created a misappropriation of land to parking, disincentivized the creation of myriad types of housing, from broader affordable housing to architectural models like rowhouses, and spurred NIMBYism. Wrapping up, they parse through the various environmental impacts of the parking issue, and how various levels of politics are tackling the issue. Marilyn Thompson then joins, as she explores her recent report on Rep. Clyburn’s work with the South Carolina GOP on planning their severely gerrymandered congressional map, tailoring the Sixth Congressional District to his liking. After working through Clyburn’s history with the district, Thompson establishes why this tactic is so backward and actively hurts Democratic and Black representation in South Carolina.

And in the Fun Half: Emma is joined by Brandon Sutton and Matt Binder as they touch on autonomous Teslas’ continued insistence on subtly breaking laws, talk with Ethan from Sports Twitter about Nancy Pelosi’s role in keeping Dianne Feinstein in office and the absurdity of painting this as “feminist” when it’s ultimately about keeping another woman out of office, and watch Ben Shapiro wax poetic about the bane of humanity (Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Edition). Marty from Houston discusses the financial impact of the culture war on Drag, RFK – the supposed progressive – claims that “it’s the politicians, not the capitalists” that are the issue, and Dylan from New Mexico reflects on the cultivated inhumanity around the homeless people in our society. They wrap up by watching Machaela Cavanaugh and Jermaine Johnson speak out against fascism on their respective statehouse floors, plus, your calls and IMs!

It's Hump Day! Sam hosts Anjeanette Damon, government accountability reporter in ProPublica's Southwest Office, and Byard Duncan, engagement reporter also at ProPublica, to discuss their recent piece entitled "The Ugly Truth Behind “We Buy Ugly Houses”. Then, Sam is joined by Vilma Serrano of the Oakland Education Association (OEA), to discuss the recent agreement struck between striking teachers and the school district. First, Sam runs through updates on Democrats' victories in yesterday’s special elections, debt ceiling discussions, a potential expulsion of George Santos, the continuing abuse of Dianne Feinstein, North Carolina’s abortion ban, and Missouri’s reversal of a trans healthcare ban, before diving into the alleged sale of pardons by Rudy Giuliani and Donald Trump. Anjeanette Damon and Byard Duncan then join as they dive right into “We Buy Houses” and the franchises of the house wholesale industry, with individuals buying into the branding and advertising system that the national company offers to jumpstart their legitimacy, before looking to their practice of targeting homeowners that simultaneously find themselves in an insecure situation while also maintaining a higher home equity rate, allowing these seemingly “legitimate” (though largely unlicensed and unregulated) brokers to frame the sale around their debts and expenses rather than the actual worth of the house. Stepping back, Damon and Duncan explore the lack of regulation and licensing requirements in the cash-focused house wholesaler industry, as well as the actual practice of wholesaling, before wrapping up by tackling the massive information asymmetry on housing data and how the housing flipping industry aims to keep it that way. Vilma Serrano jumps right into the recent 7-day strike by the Oakland Education Association, walking through the need for the wholesale rebuilding of the Oakland public school system, and the 7 months of fruitless negotiations on the matter, also touching on the major issues at hand, and how the union hopes to address them. Expanding on this, Serrano and Sam tackle the rise of Social Unionism, and the importance of fighting for broader community needs, before wrapping up the interview by parsing through the destructive effect of Bill Gates’ education reform movement.

And in the Fun Half: Sam dives into the Right’s ridiculous attempts to keep the Durham investigation drama alive, from Tommy Tuberville’s “don’t ask don’t tell” tactic to Tim Pool’s bank heist analogy, and touches on the North Carolina abortion ban. August from the Finger Lakes brings up the supposed redemption of George W. Bush, Liam from Portland explores class’ role in intersectionality, and Austin from Georgia discusses Cop City, and police “justice.” Mike from Philly brings Marianne Williamson into the mix, and the MR Crew dives into Elon Musk’s “White Supremacy’s violence is a psyop, actually” take, plus, your calls and IMs!

It's News Day Tuesday! Sam breaks down the biggest headlines of the day. First, he runs through updates on the debt ceiling talks and whether Biden will cave, reports on the moral and political corruption of Rudy Giuliani, the release of the Durham report, the US Virgin Island’s case against Elon Musk, Erdogan’s election repression, the booming rejection of Cop City at Atlanta’s recent city council hearing, the swearing in of Brandon Johnson as Chicago Mayor, Minnesota labor legislation, and the IRS’ report on their own discrimination, before parsing through the Right-Wing spin on the empty Durham report. Next, Sam and the MR Crew dive into the debt ceiling debate and the leaked news of Democrats playing defense for Kevin McCarthy, and whether it actually foreshadows decent strategy from the Biden camp. Wrapping up, they preview today’s special elections in Pennsylvania and tackle the expansive corruption of Rudy Giuliani recently released, from sexual assault to the sale of pardons, and the role of US intelligence.

And in the Fun Half: Sam and the MR Crew discuss the ridiculous emphasis on work requirements after decades of their failure, the clear rejection of the multi-million dollar Cop City investment by Atlanta community members, and why the right is still screaming “Laptop!” Josh Hawley talks about his manhood, a Louisville caller dives into the barriers of tackling white supremacy exclusively through class analysis, and Carly from Philadelphia dives into the HD-163 race in Pennsylvania. The crew uncovers some information about Bari Weiss’ UATX grift, Ben Shapiro rants about the biology of anthropomorphized beavers on Blue’s Clues, Marily from Tucson dives into the threat to one’s life that is being jailed in America, and Maya from Grand Rapids discusses the role of COVID funds moving forwards. Abraham from Illinois shares some harrowing stories about immigration enforcement in Florida, plus, your calls and IMs!

Happy Monday! Sam hosts Kidada E. Williams, associate professor of history at Wayne State University, to discuss her recent book I Saw Death Coming: A History of Terror and Survival in the War against Reconstruction. Sam begins the show by talking about the upcoming debt ceiling battle, and how it seems increasingly likely that Biden is going to cave to Kevin McCarthy and the Republicans by agreeing to some spending caps and additional work requirements, when he absolutely doesn't have to if he and his administration had any creativity whatsoever. Then, Kidada joins the show and Sam and her start off by recapping what The "Dunning School" of history was, how it came about, and what its essential project was (sanitizing the Confederacy, as well as the racist, violent legacy of post-Civil War Reconstruction.) Sam and Professor Williams also marvel at how successful the project of the Dunning School was, highlighting anecdotally how minimal amounts of time and resources were dedicated in classrooms to fully fleshing out the harmful Reconstruction's effects on black Americans actually were. Professor Williams then dives into her scholarship, where she located direct testimony from families taken in the field by members of Congress in the post-Civil War South, and how these testimonies paint a picture of what really happened after the Civil War supposedly "ended": the fighting became a sort of guerrilla war against free black people, and the war itself didn't neatly "end", so to speak. Professor Williams recounts, per her research, the gratuitous and brutal violence free black people faced even after being released from bondage, and even after receiving the rights that they did not possess before prior to the Civil War. They wrap up the conversation by centering the issues of white supremacy and how crucial they are to what happened during Reconstruction: a concerted effort and investment in the furtherance of white supremacy, not just by white Southerners, but by white Northerners too, in the project of continuing to marginalize and subjugate free black people.

And in the Fun Half, Sam talks about Latino truckers taking to social media to call for a boycott of Florida because draconian immigration laws proposed under Gov. Ron DeSantis, Elon Musk's free speech crusades on Twitter resulting in censoring people on the site to not upset the Turkish government, a decision that even pissed off Enes Kanter Freedom. Protesters with Climate Defiance demonstrate at Sen. Amy Klobuchar's book event ("The Joy Of Politics", in stores near you!), and the weekend Fox & Friends crew get upset with President Biden for daring to utter the words "white supremacy" when talking about the famously not-racist United States.  Plus, your calls & IM's!

It's Casual Friday! Sam hosts Heather Digby Parton, contributing writer at Salon.com and proprietor of the blog Hullabaloo, to round up the week in news. Then, he is joined by Matthew Film Guy! First, Sam runs through updates on the debt ceiling debate, CNN’s response to backlash from their Trump Town Hall, the “end” of the COVID emergency and Title 42, Joe Manchin taking on the EPA, various mainstream court cases, and Elon’s new CEO, before diving into the floundering “reports” of the intense corruption of the Biden Crime Family. Digby then joins as she and Sam dive into Anderson Cooper’s insanely “holier than thou” response to critiques of CNN, as well as the looming conservative shadow of John Malone over the company, before quickly running through ongoing debates about the Debt Ceiling. Wrapping up, they touch on the “end” of COVID, per the Biden Administration, and how well over 1 million deaths later, the US has learned absolutely nothing. Film Guy “Matthew Film Guy” Matthew joins as he and Sam run through the impact of the WGA strike on the movie and TV industries, reflect on Sam’s appearance on Movie Night Extravaganza, and Matthew’s film suggestion of the Romanian New Wave film “Four Months, Three Weeks, and Two Days.”

And in the Fun Half: Sam tackles the right wing’s vitriolic coverage of the killing of Jordan Neely, with Jesse Watters and Greg Gutfeld uplifting the “heroic” murder of a guy whose crime was being hungry and upset, also touching on Elon’s new CEO appointment as Twitter overlooks a financial cliff, and Ben Shapiro’s “Pope of the Jews” schtick expanding to proclaim himself “Pope of the Rape Victims.” Wrapping up, they discuss Biden’s fascist immigration policy in the wake of Title 42 being rolled back, and Tommy Tuberville’s defense of White Nationalists in the military.

It's an EmMajority Report Thursday! She hosts author Corban Addison to discuss his recent book Wastelands: The True Story of Farm Country On Trial. First, Emma dives into updates on the indictment of George Santos, Dianne Feinstein’s return, the end of the COVID national emergency, Israel’s continuing genocide against Palestine, Rep. Rashida Tlaib and Sen. Bernie Sanders teaming up for a Nakba day, healthcare legislation, and Amazon’s tax breaks, before parsing through the absolute sh*t show that was CNN’s Town Hall with Donald Trump, and the Media’s complete capitulation to his celebrity. Corban Addison then joins as he walks Emma through his story on the real-world legal thriller that was the Mass Action lawsuit against North Carolina’s hog farms, beginning with a discussion of the broader legal avenues this case followed, before stepping back to explore the history of North Carolina’s hog industry, which arose in the 1960s following the Tobacco industry’s collapse as Wendell Murphy, owner of the largest feed mill at the time, took a page out of the book of Tyson’s chicken industry, contracting the floundering NC farms to be packed full of his pigs. Moving forward, Addison dives into the slow but sure monopolization of the region’s industry, culminating in the purchase of Murphy’s Smithfield Foods by the WH Group, the world’s biggest pork manufacturer based out of China, who continued to streamline the production in the US, as China did not allow the same industry tactics that North Carolina saw. Parsing through these practices, Corban and Emma tackle the creation of mass cesspools of hog waste by these corporations, and the complete disregard for the environmental impact or the well-being of their neighbors. After looking at the horrors that came out of this regulatory disaster, Addison wraps up by assessing the compensation in the case, and why, ultimately, the only solution is federal regulation.

And in the Fun Half: Emma is joined by Brandon Sutton and Matt Binder, diving into the genuine horror that is Dianne Feinstein’s staff (and Democratic leadership) letting her return to the Senate, Kowalski from Nebraska calls in with his assessment of today’s interview, and Charlie from New Jersey dives into the Mainstream media’s obsession with Donald Trump and their co-dependent relationship with far-right politics. They also tackle the indictment of George Santos, the right-wing response to the Allen, TX shooter citing Tim Pool and LibsofTikTok, and Lucy from Brooklyn dives into the role of NDAs in elite culture, and the despicable and alien behavior of today’s ultra-wealthy, plus, your calls and IMs!

It's Hump Day! Sam and Emma host Dennis Tajer, Communications Committee Chair Captain for the Allied Pilots Association (APA) to discuss a potential strike amongst American Airlines pilots. Then, writer Greg Iwinski joins the show from the Writers Guild of America East (WGAE) picket line as they strike for a better contract and working conditions! First, Sam and Emma react to the bombshell guilty verdict that found former President Trump liable for sexual battery and defamation against E. Jean Carroll, and the...less-than-vigorous response from Republican senators asked to react to the decision. They're then joined by Dennis, who explains the various infrastructures of pilot unions, why American Airlines pilots specifically and overwhelmingly approved a strike authorization, what exactly the pilots are fighting for in terms of a work-life balance that did not exist before COVID, and what's next in terms of negotiations and demand-setting. Then, late night comedy writer Greg Iwinski comes on the program from the picket line outside Amazon and HBO headquarters in Hudson Yards in Manhattan. He explains the reasons as to why the Writers Guild of America (WGA) decided to authorize a strike, how writing work for television has completely changed, from that of a holistic writing and artistic process to one that resembles what it's like to work in the gig economy, how studios and networks offering day-rate projects doesn't and cannot lead to a lasting career in show business (there are no day rates for...paying rent and feeding one's children, for example), and what people can do to help out the striking writers.

And in the Fun Half, Sam loses his mind over Sen. Dianne Feinstein's continued absence from her job. He and the MR Crew also react to Rep. George Santos's surrender to New York authorities over 13 (!!) federal charges, and...another less-than-vibrant reaction from top Republican brass in the house to these revelations. Matt Walsh has something to say about manliness in sports, and Emma breaks down some BOMBSHELL reporting in the Washington Post that shows that legendary writer Alex Haley may have doctored a quote by Martin Luther King in an interview where he heavily criticized Malcolm X. Plus, your calls & IM's!

It's News Day Tuesday! Sam and Emma break down the biggest headlines of the day, running through updates on the beginnings of the debt limit talks, Conservatives’ attempts to distance themselves from the Allen, TX shooter, the Senate Judiciary’s request to Harlan Crow, labor action with airline pilots and pilot writers (that’s a WGA joke), Israel’s strike on Palestinian civilians in Gaza, and updates on fascism in statehouses across the country. Next, they dive into Kyrsten Sinema’s “ugh BOTH sides amirite” argument on the debt ceiling, respond to Jodey Arrington’s absurd arguments about Biden’s debt ceiling plans, and address the absolute failure of Medicaid work requirements in Arkansas. Wrapping up, Sam and Emma parse through the horrors of this weekend’s mass shooting in Allen Texas, the shooter’s unsurprising connection to the far right, from Tim Pool to LibsofTikTok, and how to deal with the devastation that their stochastic terrorism has wrought on our country.

And in the Fun Half: Sam and Emma watch the FBI’s telling “Run. Hide. Fight.” commercial on dealing with a mass shooting, Tony from Texas dives into the proliferation of said videos across the US job market, and Tim Pool hammers home the same-old disprovable lies about Sam, alongside claiming “psyop!” when it comes to the rise of Nazi terror in the US. Brian from LA discusses the desire to flee the dangers of the US, and Cathy from Ohio dives into how these “active shooter” tactics completely disregard the presence of disabled people in our society, plus, your calls and IMs!

Happy Monday! Sam and Emma host Erwin Chemerinsky, Dean of the University of California, Berkeley Law School, to discuss his recent book Worse Than Nothing: The Dangerous Fallacy of Originalism. First, Sam and Emma run through updates on the multiple mass killings in Texas this weekend, debt limit talks, Title 42, Trump’s civil rape case, Biden’s floundering polling numbers, and labor action from the WGA and Oakland teachers, before diving into the coverage of this weekend’s mass shooting in Texas, and the right, once again, weakly recycling their “politicization” talking points. Erwin Chemerinsky then joins as he walks through the popularization of “originalism” coming out of the failed nomination of Robert Bork to the Supreme Court in 1987, exploring what originalism is, and how it relies on reverse engineering the opinions of our “framers” from the perspective of whatever “originalist” is making the argument. After parsing through the history of originalism, Erwin takes on the five central problems with originalism, beginning with the epistemological problem of being unable to actually determine the intent of countless framers involved in constructing our constitution, the incoherence problem of the framers’ rejection of a static view of the constitution grounded in the exact (and incredibly vague) words they put forward, the abhorrence problem of what originalism would actually result in (segregation, sex-based discrimination, etc), the modernity problem of how drastically the technologies and infrastructure of our era have departed from that of the 18th Century, and, lastly, the hypocrisy problem presented by the obvious inconsistent application of originalism by any and all originalists. Wrapping up, Professor Chemerinsky tackles why originalism has grown so prevalent in constitutional discourse, the massive conservative project that brought it to this point, and how the left can push back.

And in the Fun Half: Sam and Emma dive into this weekend’s massacre in Texas, Dick Durbin’s complete impotence when it comes to Dianne Feinstein’s absence, and Brian from North Carolina reflects on a country that has normalized myriad violent and antisocial horrors. The MR Crew reflects on the Right’s one-sided concerns with corruption, and Shenida calls in to recommend Prince Harry as a guest on the show.  Emma and Sam address the absurd coverage of Emma’s “public places should be safe for homeless and impoverished people too” take. They dive into Trump’s testimony in his civil rape case, plus, your calls and IMs!

It's Casual Friday! Sam and Emma host Alex Pareene, Contributing Editor at the New Republic and proprietor of the AP newsletter on Substack, to round up the week in news. First, Emma dives into updates on the US job growth, the White House’s debt limit concessions, Clarence Thomas’ corruption, the continuing banking crisis, Dianne Feinstein’s absence, fascist legislation in Florida and Indiana, and Donald Trump’s rape case, also diving into the recent revelations about the Federalist Society’s backdoor funding of Ginni Thomas. Alex Pareene then joins as he and Emma dive into Clarence Thomas’ endless stream of corruption allegations, whether anything will actually be done about it, and how liberal institutions affirm the Court’s corruption. They also touch on the disappearance of Dianne Feinstein, the holdup it has created in the judicial confirmation process, and what (if anything) Democrats will do about it, before parsing through Biden’s role in the matter, where his 2024 candidacy stands, and his likely matchup with Trump. After tackling the impotence of the “Republican in Blue clothing” tactic of Manchin and Sinema, they wrap up the interview with the devastating story of the killing of Jordan Neely, and the horrors of uplifting right-wing violence fantasies.

And in the Fun Half: Emma parses through Steven Crowder’s 2015 Op-Ed, “I’m a Guy and I’ll Never Badmouth my WIfe,” Caleb from Canton discusses the absurdity of the billionaire genre of Nazi obsession, and Matt dives into the greatness of Chris James. Devon from Alberta asks Emma about the Oilers, the MR Crew parses through Lance from the Serfs’ killer appearance on Tim Pool’s show, and Michael Knowles and Matt Lech bond over their pro-Hooter stances, plus, your calls and IMs!

It's an EmMajority Report Thursday! She hosts David Allen, historian of U.S. foreign relations, to discuss his recent book Every Citizen a Statesman: The Dream of a Democratic Foreign Policy in the American Century. Then, Emma talks to Joshua Craze, writer and researcher specializing in Sudan, to discuss the recent civil conflict that's broken out in the region over the past few weeks. First, Emma runs through updates on a brand new Clarence Thomas corruption reveal, the FED getting back into their attacks on the working class, the murders of Jordan Neely and Tyre Nichols, the anniversary of the IDF’s murder of Shireen Abu Akleh, McDonald’s child labor fiasco, and Montana Gov. Gianforte signing off on his state’s fascist legislation, also diving into the heartless and incoherent responses from Mayor Eric Adams and Gov. Kathy Hochul to the killing of Jordan Neely on the New York subway. David Allen then joins as he dives right into the rise of undemocratic control over the US National Security State, and how it became so normalized after decades of debate. Allen first steps back to parse through the state of US Foreign Policy at the beginning of the 20th Century, with the First World War finally putting the US in an important position on the world stage, in an era with an incredibly small State Department with a much more direct relationship to Democracy, as represented by the forming of the Foreign Policy Association, an organization made up by myriad progressive activists and suffragettes,  in 1918, as well as attempts to educate the American public on issues of foreign policy and collective participation. However, as the US moved out of the Second World War with a massively expanded government and State Department, as well as growing tensions (both Nuclear and otherwise) with the emergence of the Cold War, the government began to detach the public from the processes of state-making and foreign policy, establishing agencies like the National Security Council and the Department of Defense. Wrapping up, Allen walks Emma through the cementing of the exclusive nature of US Foreign Policy, the role of think tanks and elite participation, and whether any optimism is held for the future of democratic participation in USFP. Joshua Craze then joins as he parses through the rise and fall of Omar Al Bashir’s rule over Sudan, the civilian transition in the wake of the 2019 ousting, and the ongoing competition between military, paramilitary, and civilian-driven groups. Next, they dive into the role of US support for military control, both in bolstering Al Bashir’s neoliberal regime, and in actively pushing out civilian resistance committees in the rebuilding process due to their opposition to neoliberal economics. Wrapping up, Craze tackles the particular roles that the capital city of Khartoum and the region of Darfur play as the center stage of the warfare, the impact of the devastation in Khartoum on greater humanitarian issues, and why the most discussed solutions all involve an unpopular and impotent military gaining full power, likely starting a process of civilian transition all over again.

And in the Fun Half: Emma is joined by Brandon Sutton and Matt Binder as they cover the coverage from Fox and Friends, and others, on the killing of Jordan Neely, and the updates on Crowder’s workplace abuses. Dave from Jamaica dives a little deeper into the deeply upsetting response to the killing of Jordan Neely, and the fascism of the US police state, and Matt Walsh leaps to the defense of Tucker Carlson and the right to notice (the inferiority of other races and cultures), plus, your calls and IMs!

It's Hump Day! Sam hosts Ian Millhiser, senior correspondent at Vox, to discuss the upcoming cases that will be before the Supreme Court this term. Sam starts off by touching on the recent revelations surrounding Tucker Carlson's text messages disclosed from the Dominion lawsuit, and how he still isn't buying that these are the reasons Fox ultimately let him go. Then, he touches on former Bush Attorney General and "Serious Person" Michael Mukasey's appearance at the Senate Judiciary Committee hearing, and how Mukasey, if he were a judge, wouldn't potentially ruin a friendship by not going on their private jet. Then Ian joins the program, with Sam and him starting off by discussing the Supreme Court writ large, in an attempt to pinpoint just how long the institution has been fundamentally broken (hit: dating back to the Dred Scott decision, so over 100 years.) They then touch on Loper Bright Enterprises v. Raimondo, the newest case the court has taken in their desperate attempts to gut the federal regulatory state. Ian also discusses the recent "judge-shopping" that's been going on, i.e. anti-abortion advocates angling to get their cases on abortion medication like mifepristone into Amarillo Texas judge and right-wing theocrat Matthew Kacsmaryk's courtrooms so he can ideally rule in their favor. They then talk about Glacier Northwest v. Teamsters, a potentially landmark case that could determine when and how workers are allowed to strike. Finally, Ian provides a bit of a primer on cases that will be decided on this term, including cases involving affirmative action, student loan forgiveness, and Moore v. Harper, the case surrounding the validity of "independent state legislature theory" deciding contests in presidential elections.

And in the Fun Half, Sam and the MR Crew take a look at more of Rhode Island Sen. Sheldon Whitehouse's remarks from the Senate Judiciary Committee on Supreme Court ethics, Adam Conover calling out rich CEO's on CNN as the WGA strike continues, what Tucker Carlson actually said in that text that supposedly got him fired and how it compares to the standard racist fare that one of his possible successors, Jesse Watters, spews on a daily basis, and Abby Grossberg, his former producer, making clear that Fox News calls the shots for congressional Republicans. Plus, your calls & IM's!

Sam and Emma host Jane McAlevey, Senior Policy Fellow at the University of California, Berkeley's Labor Center, to discuss her recent book Rules to Win By: Power and Participation in Union Negotiations. They begin by running through updates on the WGA strike, an impending airline strike, the fascist attacks on Zooey Zephyr, fascist attacks on healthcare in Oklahoma and Florida, Vice Media’s impending bankruptcy, and the Rangers’ devastating loss last night, before parsing through the Senate Judiciary hearing on the Supreme Court’s ethics issues. Jane McAlevey then joins as she walks Sam and Emma through her experiences working in, and writing about the labor organizing process, from her time with the AFL-CIO in the ‘90s through her multiple texts that attempt to address the disconnect between labor mobilization and labor organizing, and understanding organizing as community outreach rather than focusing on those already aligned with your goals. Next, McAlevey dives into the challenges of the unionization process, with union-busting remaining prevalent well after a successful vote and throughout the bargaining processes, the importance of having community support and solidarity to bolster the long and draining battle, and the networks community organizing can create. She also looks to the case studies that she explores in her books, tackling the importance of building on worker knowledge and transparency in the bargaining process, and before they wrap up the interview by walking through the recent renaissance of labor consciousness in the US, the importance of youth labor activists, the future of labor action, and why capitalists want more of the gig economy.

And in the Fun Half: Sam and Emma dive a little deeper into the WGA strike and the impact of the streaming era on labor compensation, Nancy Mace’s stance on Ron DeSantis’ Florida abortion ban, Rudy Giuliani giving away the game on legal disenfranchisement, and Fox’s post-woke fantasies of the future for Elon’s Twitter. Dr. Matthew from the University of Texas walks through his presidential fantasies, Emma grapples with the Rangers’ playoff exit, and the MR Crew tackles the absurdity of the streaming era, plus, your calls and IMs!

Happy Monday! Sam and Emma host Quinn Slobodian, professor of the History of Ideas at Wellesley College, to discuss his recent book Crack-Up Capitalism: Market Radicals and the Dream of a World Without Democracy. Sam and Emma start off by checking in on the numerous improprieties of the conservative Supreme Court justices Gorsuch, Thomas, and Roberts, as well as their decision to take a case that looks to dismantle the regulatory state. Then, they're joined by Quinn, whose 2018 book Globalists Sam was a big fan of; Quinn says that Crack-Up Capitalism is a sequel of sorts, attempting to answer the question that, after globalization lost its luster, where did market radicalists and their ideology want to go next? Sam asks whether the process surrounding the Trans Pacific Partnership (TPP) was a prime example of the changing headwinds amongst this group surrounding the idea of "free trade", and how that term continued to warp as we kept getting farther and farther from 2016. They then get into the meat of the book, discussing the newest ideas amongst this group of market radicalists (read: libertarians): creating secessionist communities, drawing from ideas stemming from gated communities and homeowner's associations, that proliferated heavily in the 1990's to create a different political and societal system: that of an entirely private government, that does not adhere to the general whims of American democracy (election cycles every 2 or 4 years). Quinn also touches on the "frontier" mentality that embodies this type of mentality, one that dates all the way back to the "manifest destiny" idea in the 19th century. They end the conversation by discussing whether this idea of an a-democratic society is the underpinning of an actual ideological movement, or if it is backfilling a pretty general conservative ideal: creation of prosperity for the few and the wealthy at the great expense of the working poor.

In the Fun Half, Sam, Emma, and the MR Crew discuss Kyle Rittenhouse's recent appearance on Ted Nugent's program, where Nugent taught Rittenhouse about the "Mike Obama" conspiracy theory, Steven Crowder's response to the leaked footage of him being verbally abusive to his pregnant wife (hint: he's not remorseful), Elon Musk and Bill Maher breaking down what the apocalyptic "woke mind virus" really is, and how that virus is playing out a Texas school (they don't want their kids watching "James and the Giant Peach"). Sam touches on the Fed's war on labor, and how the New York Times is helping it discipline workers, plus your calls and IM's!
