The Majority Report with Sam Seder

It's Casual Friday! Sam and Emma host Jamelle Bouie, opinion columnist at the New York Times and co-host of the Unclear and Present Danger podcast, to round up the week in news. Then, they're joined by comedian Tim Heidecker, who has a real bone to pick with Sam!

First, Sam and Emma run through updates on the blocking of multiple abortion bans in state legislatures, a soon-to-release Kavanaugh documentary, the budget cut debate, Elon’s Twitter, and the fascistic expulsion of Zooey Zephyr from the Montana legislature, before admiring Ron DeSantis’ most recent blowup after being questioned about his role at Guantanamo. Jamelle Bouie then joins as he dives right into the Supreme Court’s crisis of legitimacy, with half of the justices under fire for some form of corruption, while the Chief Justice refuses to recognize the system of checks and balances, walking through why Democratic leadership is refusing to even contemplate Court reform due to severe fears of backlash, despite it being a fight against unpopular institution full of unpopular people pursuing unpopular policies while under a corruption scandal. Next, they dive into the departure of Tucker Carlson from Fox News and whether it will genuinely have an impact on the company’s fascist indoctrination, before wrapping up with an assessment of a 2024 Democratic primary. Tim Heidecker then calls in to teach Sam a thing or two about what real journalism looks like.

And in the Fun Half: Sam and Emma dive into the fascism and genocidal rhetoric of the Montana legislature, the activism coming from the Montana Governor’s children, and the blocking of abortion bans in both Nebraska and South Carolina. A Colorado caller (Sam from the future?) rants on Solar tariffs, Cody from Georgia discusses breaking the cycle of fundamentalist abuse, the MR Crew tackles the updates to Stephen Crowder’s abuse, and Master Chief Keef from New York ponders Tucker’s future, plus, your calls and IMs!

It's an EmMajority Report Thursday! She hosts Adrienne Buller, Senior Fellow at Common Wealth, to discuss her recent book The Value of a Whale: On the Illusions of Green Capitalism. Then, in a pre-taped conversation, Emma sits down with Mark Himmelstein and Marshawn Brewer of the bargaining committee for Fordham University graduate students, to discuss their recent organizing efforts and yesterday's walkout from classes.

First, Emma runs through updates on Manchin’s future, Disney’s lawsuit against DeSantis, Tucker’s firing, Montana’s fascist GOP ousting Zooey Zephyr, Schumer’s meeting with Elon Musk, and Trump’s myriad legal battles, before diving into Tucker Carlson’s weak debut post-Fox. Adrienne Buller then dives right into her recent piece on green capitalism, first exploring how the title parodies an IMF article evaluating the capital worth of whales to the global economy, and parsing through neoliberalism’s emphasis on financialization and market-driven solutions. Next, Buller steps back to assess green capitalism as a whole, understanding its recognition of the climate crisis as progress while still recognizing how it seeks to exploit said crisis, walking through the myriad “green” tactics, like carbon pricing/capture and ESG, and exploring how they work to incentivize rather than regulate, thus providing more than enough loopholes for capitalists to offshore and offset exploitation. Wrapping up, Adrienne and Emma look to Biden’s IRA as a perfect example of green capitalism’s market-based solutions, the importance of grounding solutions in justice, and why social justice can’t prioritize profitability. Then, Emma is joined by Mark Himmelsbach and Marshawn Brewer as they walk through the impetus for the unionization of Fordham’s graduate students, from the University’s failure to respond to COVID to New York’s growing cost-of-living crisis, and explore what its like to battle against an institution that refuses to recognize you, much less your struggles. Wrapping up, they dive into the union’s recent walkout, where the union’s hopes lay, and how those of us outside of the union can help.

And in the Fun Half: Emma is joined by Matt Binder as they tackle Bernie’s Biden endorsement, watch Crowder get eviscerated by an up-and-coming Amy Schumer, and Wayne from Iowa holds Emma accountable for her child-labor-phobic comments. They also tackle Dwayne Wade’s recent comments on Florida’s growing fascism, Nico from San Francisco helps the crew parse through SF’s anti-homeless fury, and Ron Johnson doesn’t give a sh*t about your crops. Marjorie Taylor Greene capitalizes on her committee seats with some staunch homophobia, and Robert from Georgia dives into the Tucker Carlson firing, plus, your calls and IMs!

It's Hump Day! Sam and Emma host Amy Wilentz, Professor of Literary Journalism at the University of California Irvine and contributing editor at The Nation, to discuss her recent piece in The Nation entitled "Haiti, April 2023: Soon There Will Be No One Left to Kidnap." Then, they're joined by Djene Bajalan, professor of history at Missouri State University, to discuss the upcoming Turkish elections. First, Sam and Emma run through updates on Kevin McCarthy’s impending austerity bill, the nomination of Julie Su, John Roberts’ ethics crisis, Fox’s opposition file on Tucker,  and Bernie’s Biden endorsement, before diving into a former Tucker producer’s testimony on what’s been coming out of Fox News. Professor Amy Wilentz then steps back to walk through the impact of the 2010 Haiti Earthquake in cementing the US-backed rule of Ariel Henry over a country with devastated infrastructure that was falling more and more into the hands of capitalists and gangs, before analyzing the complete neutering of Haiti’s governmental forces, be they military or police, the connections between the cops and the criminals, and how these elements bolstered the rise of gangs and human trafficking in the country, leading to its current moment of intense upheaval. Wrapping up, Amy, Sam, and Emma explore what solutions are even viable, and why an election might only serve to reinforce the current moment of chaos. Djene Bajalan then dives into the nationalist discourse ahead of Turkey’s election, before walking through the role this election plays in Erdogan’s path to supreme power. After tackling the impact of the Turkey-Syria earthquake earlier this year and Erdogan’s fascistic response, Sam, Emma, and Djene wrap up the interview by tracing the political movements that have existed alongside Erdogan’s reign, and what to expect from their post-election check-in.

And in the Fun Half: Sam and Emma cover the attacks on Kevin McCarthy’s austerity from the right, the silencing of Zooey Zephyr on the Montana house floor, Candace responding to Crowder with infinitely more grit than he provided, and the importance of building new housing.  Cade from Washington dives into the importance of engaging local politics on an individual level, and Kyle from LA starts a long conversation on Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, and the predication of violence, plus, your calls and IMs!

It's News Day Tuesday! Sam and Emma break down the biggest headlines of the day. First, they run through updates on Biden’s reelection bid, the departures of Tucker and Don Lemon, new SCOTUS corruption allegations, Trump’s alternate impending trials, the silencing and repression of Zooey Zephyr and her supporters, Harry Belafonte, DeSantis’ floundering, and the corruption of a Florida Surgeon General. Next, Sam and Emma parse through Biden’s incredibly boring reelection announcement, the rights’ somehow MORE boring response to said announcement, and speculate on the Democratic primary, before diving into the role of abortion and crime in the leadup to the 2024 elections. They also dive into Tucker’s final moments at Fox News, Greg Kelly’s and Donald Trump’s reflections on the matter, and what spurred both his and Don Lemons’ departures from their respective news organizations. Wrapping up the first half, Sam and Emma cover the corruption of Joseph Ladapo, DeSantis’ Florida Surgeon General, who altered key findings in a study on COVID-19 vaccine safety.

And in the Fun Half: Kowalski from Nebraska dives into agricultural and environmental updates, Matt Walsh struggles to respond to a youth activist with anything but “uh, what’s a woman?” and Joe Manchin goes on Hannity to denounce the evil lies of the IRA – that he was central to shaping. Jeff from New Mexico dives into the forgotten stories of the Twitter Files, Oochie Wally discusses the ignorance of the US’ “Red Summer” of white supremacist uprisings, and Stephen Crowder comes out as the newest member of the “Incredibly Divorced Bigots” club, plus your calls and IMs!

It's Casual Friday! Sam and Emma host Heather Digby Parton, contributing writer at Salon.com and proprietor of the blog Hullabaloo, to round up the week in news. First, Sam and Emma run through updates on the Supreme Court’s Mifepristone decision, far-right legislation coming out of North Carolina, Texas, and the US House, and Buzzfeed news closing shop. Digby then joins Sam and Emma as they dive into the conclusion of the Fox-Dominion lawsuit, the internal incompetence of Fox News, and the destructive force of Rupert Murdoch’s empire, as well as Kevin McCarthy’s lackluster debt ceiling hustle, and the uncertain standing of centrists like Joe Manchin and Kyrsten Sinema. They also discuss the cold war in the GOP primary, as DeSantis’ floundering puts the GOP establishment in disarray, while Biden’s announcement is still impending, with only Bobby Kennedy and Marianne Williamson likely to serve as imperfect messengers of the Left, and why a true progressive candidacy must be grounded in coalition building and union solidarity. Wrapping up, they discuss the upcoming generation of politicians, including the passion of the Justins in Tennessee, and the horrors of the Right’s young guard.

And in the Fun Half: Sam and Emma dive a little deeper into Texas passing a law requiring the 10 Commandments to be “prominently displayed” in classrooms, the resignation of the Vice Chair of Tennessee’s House Republican Caucus over sexually harassing interns,  and the stalling nomination of Julie Su. They also parse through a few of DeSantis’ defenders and betrayers, plus, your IMs!

It's a special 4/20 EmMajority Report Thursday! Emma hosts Michael Sandel, professor of Government Theory at Harvard University, to discuss his book Democracy's Discontent: A New Edition for Our Perilous Times. Michael Sandel then dives right into why he decided to update his 1996 work “Democracy’s Discontent,” looking back at that period as simultaneously the apex of faith in the neoliberal Washington consensus and one that saw the first tricklings of unraveling community infrastructure, the diminishment of citizens’ representation, and general feelings of insecurity which were all affirmed with the 2008 financial crisis. Picking up in the wake of the crisis, Professor Sandel explores how the elite decided to put the system back together again, rather than actually rethinking the role of finance in the economy, sparking bipartisan anger that birthed two movements: a new socialist movement on the left, and the tea party movement on the right. Parsing deeper through this anger. Sandel and Emma discuss the explicit rejection of elites’ credentialism and meritocratic hubris, tackling what these concepts entail, how they birthed the populist nominations of Bernie Sanders and Donald J. Trump, and why they so contributed to growing feelings of alienation during the first two decades of the 21st Century. Next, Michael walks through a distinction between two conceptions of freedom, one grounded in consumerism and the other in civic ideals, exploring how the emphasis on the former has bolstered democracy’s discontent, while the latter offers us a route out of it, before they wrap up the interview by exploring what a reorganizing of our economy towards civic ideals would entail, and why universal service programs might (MIGHT) be an answer.

And in the Fun Half: Emma is joined by Brandon Sutton and Matt Binder as they tackle Elon Musk’s natalism perfectly coalescing with Tucker Carlson’s direct white supremacy, Nick from Pittsburg dives into the horrors of SpaceX’s failed experiment, and the MR Crew covers Elon’s crackdown on free speech, capitalizing on the same rules that pushed the Hunter Biden coverup. They also discuss a CEO’s “pity city” speech to those she’s exploiting, Elly from South Carolina dives into Nancy Mace’s abortion switch-up, and Charlie Kirk fears WokeGPT. Kevin from Philly reflects on the Pity City speech, plus, your calls and IMs!

It's Hump Day! Sam hosts Patrick Rucker, finance reporter for The Capitol Forum and contributor at ProPublica, to discuss his recent piece entitled "How Cigna Saves Millions by Having Its Doctors Reject Claims Without Reading Them". Then, he's joined by percussionist Andy Blanco with the Musician's Union Local 802, to discuss their recent organizing efforts against Distinguished Concerts International New York (DCINY). First, Sam runs through updates on Fox settling their dominion case, the Supreme Court’s response to the Mifepristone hold, Canadian labor action, Clarence Thomas’ corruption, DeSantis’ visit to Washington, and Iowa advancing children’s right to work, before diving into coverage of Fox’s settlement, and the extant cases they still face. Patrick Rucker then dives right into his discovery of Cigna’s scam, walking through the statistics of the inhumane pace at which their doctors would reject insurance claims, and the outrageous quantity of rejections that this has led to, with no substantive reason behind a vast majority of said rejections. After tackling the parallels with the banking sector’s Robo-signing scandal and the breadth of the impact of this brand of corruption, Sam and Patrick wrap up by discussing the “legality” of Cigna’s malpractice, how to push back against it, and whether the other insurance companies have already jumped on board with their tactics. Andy Blanco and Sam then parse through Local 802’s role in the New York concert world and the exploitation they face, before looking at the impact of COVID on their labor situation, and how DCINY forced them into filing unfair labor practice claims. Wrapping up, they tackle the union’s demands, and how we can help them in their fight.

And in the Fun Half: Sam discusses the GOP’s insistence on making Hunter Biden’s D*ck Pics a story, Oscar from Compton discusses local disputes with firefighters, Michelle in Brooklyn tackles the exportation of labor overseas, and John from Indiana calls in about last week’s Twitter drama. Sam and Bradley also touch on Floridian politics, with parents fighting back against theocratic rule while DeSantis goes to war with Disney, Ethan Schmidt makes a fool of himself, and Jasmin from Texas dives into corrupt election legislation, plus, your calls and IMs!

It's News Day Tuesday! Sam catches up on some of the biggest stories of the day, as well as some he missed while he was out. First, he runs through updates on the launching of the Fox-Dominion trial, the Mifepristone ban, the GOP’s support for Dianne Feinstein, the WGA overwhelmingly authorizing a strike, the White House’s role in the recent Child Labor revelations, continuing gun violence in the US, Sudan’s ceasefire failing to materialize, and Karen Bass’ anti-homelessness project. Next, Sam dives a little deeper into the absurdity of allowing Dianne Feinstein to continue her reign, Samuel Alito putting the Mifepristone hold on hold, why his own precedents delegitimize the ban, and whether the Major Questions Doctrine will come into play, before touching on the potential next step for the conservative judiciary: trans healthcare. Then, he walks through a recent New York Times article on the rise of the right wing’s obsession with transphobia, why it (unsurprisingly) ignores the role of liberal institutions – such as the New York Times – in legitimizing this rise, and refuses to acknowledge the negative electoral impact this bigotry has had. Wrapping up the first half, Sam and the MR crew run through the White House’s role in the recent child labor crisis, the central role undocumented children play, and why Arkansas’ new child labor laws put migrant kids at risk.

And in the Fun Half: Amy from Oregon dives into the inside perspective on the science behind trans healthcare, Ron DeSantis releases a defensive ad in response to Trump’s attacks, Ben Shapiro worries that Elsa might be gay, and the right offers its first anti-monopoly stance: break up big beer! Eric from San Diego reflects on the 75th anniversary of the Nakba, San from Texas discusses the local impact of rising Christian Nationalism in politics, and Clark from Houston discusses the inflaming genocidal rhetoric from the right. Sam also touches on the Ali Alexander revelations, plus, your calls and IMs!

Happy Monday! Sam is back from vacation! He and Emma speak with Jon D. Erickson, professor of sustainability science and policy at The University of Vermont, to discuss his recent book The Progress Illusion: Reclaiming Our Future from the Fairytale of Economics. Then, they're joined but Justin Alo of Teamsters Local 542 and Matt Leichenger of Teamsters Local 804 to discuss UPS workers' campaign for a new contract. First, Sam and Emma run through updates on the freezing of Mifepristone, the Fox-Dominion case, the Supreme Court hearing a case on Christians having to work on Sundays, the success of the faculty union at Rutgers, continuing gun violence across the US, the GOP Primary, and Macron’s assault on the French working class, before parsing through the absences of Sam Seder and Dianne Feinstein. Jon D. Erickson then dives right into his concept of “progress illusion,” as capitalism’s fairytale of market-driven, hyper-privatized progress, defined by marginal benefits and hyper-individualized choices that completely ignore the biophysical realities of our planet and who we are as humans. Next, he steps back to discuss the ideological nature of economics, and why that must be understood in searching for who and what economic systems are built for, diving into the statistic of Gross Domestic Product as a symbol of neoliberal progress, and how it emphasizes privatized profits while ignoring the social costs. After tackling the idea of economic systems as our servants (rather than masters), Professor Erickson walks Sam and Emma through his view of a statistic that is conscious of public costs, as put into practice in Vermont, and where such a system still falls short. Wrapping up, Jon, Emma, and Sam debate the role of capitalism and degrowth in a future that doesn’t exclusively value private profits. Justi Alo and Matt Leichenger then dive into the recent UPS teamsters’ strike, what the Teamsters for a Democratic Union caucus represents, and how a new generation of union organizers is stepping up. They also discuss UPS’ massive profits over the pandemic, alongside diminishing working conditions, and what the teamsters’ demands for this strike entail.

And in The Fun Half: Sam and Emma cover the Right-Wing jumping at the chance to defend Dianne Feinstein’s Senate seat, Kevin McCarthy’s visit to Wall Street to let them know that the working class will be punished soon, and the Good Liars return to the NRA Conference. Glenn Beck and Ben Shapiro each dive into their own brands of historical revisionism (transphobic holocaust denial and the race of Cleopatra, respectively), which Brendan from San Diego analyzes, and Rob from Boston asks Emma and Bradley to please stop the Taibbi impressions. Catfish James from Portland (Oregon) dives into the Greater Idaho Movement, and Greg Gutfeld gets woke on the Five, plus, your calls and IMs!

It's a very special Casual Friday! Emma hosts Twitch streamer extraordinaire Hasan Piker to round up a crazy week in news. Then, Emma is joined by Francesca Fiorentini, host of The Bitchuation Room podcast! First, Emma runs through updates on Clarence Thomas’ corruption, Israel’s military escalation, the continued flood of anti-trans legislation in the US, Biden’s response to the abortion pill ruling, Ron DeSantis’ 6-week abortion ban, Dianne Feinstein’s replacement, and a potential Yemen ceasefire, before diving into Nebraska State Senator Machaela Cavanaugh’s emotional testimony as her filibuster in support of trans kids reaches its seventh week. Hasan Piker then joins as he draws parallels between himself and billionaire philanthropist Harlan Crow, takes on the absurdity of having Charles “the Bell Curve” Murray give a character endorsement, and dives into the recent leaking of US military secrets over a Discord argument. They also tackle the Taibbi-Musk falling out, before Emma is joined by Francesca Fiorentini to discuss Francesca officially putting the “birth” in “birthing person,”  Trump’s “Pudding Fingers” attack ad on DeSantis, updates on the Dominion case, and Candace Owens’ obsession with being the most fash of the fascists.

And in the Fun Half: Emma and Bradley tackle the coverage of a recent leak of US military secrets, as Glenn Greenwald and Tucker Carlson side with schooling your Discord kittens over the US national security state, as well as aligning arbitrary debate with conscientious whistleblowing, plus, your IMs!

It's an EmMajority Report Thursday! Emma hosts Sarah Brayne, professor of sociology at the University of Texas at Austin, to discuss her recent book Predict and Surveil: Data, Discretion, and the Future of Policing. Then, Emma is joined by Donna Murch, associate professor of History at Rutgers University and President of the New Brunswick Chapter of Rutgers AAUP-AFT, to give an update on the teachers strike going on at the university right now. First, Emma runs through updates on the Fifth Circuit’s response to the Texas Court ban on the abortion pill, Dianne Feinstein’s response to calls for her retirement, the reinstatement of Tennessee’s outspoken state house members, Arizona’s GOP-led expulsion of an election denier, Biden’s labor secretary nomination, ACA and Medicaid expansion for DREAMers, and Biden’s border policy, also touching on DeSantis begging his Floridian colleagues not to endorse Trump, Trump’s multiple fraud cases, and far-right legislation in Oklahoma and North Dakota, before watching Tom Scott dance around his intense anti-abortion stance. Sarah Brayne then dives right into her fieldwork over the past five years tailing and interviewing myriad members throughout the LAPD, including civilian employees and officers, exploring why the LAPD was the perfect location as one of the most technologically-advanced and well-funded police department, and as a department that has been forced into a more transparent relationship to the public after a few decades of incredible abuse and corruption to end the 20th Century. After briefly walking through her interviews with the LAPD, Brayne dives into the birth of LAPD’s dragnet and directed surveillance, with their systems of surveillance stemming from their role in collecting data for the federal government in the wake of 9/11, and the realization that this data can be applied locally in myriad departments, before stepping back to look at military intervention in the Middle East as a further example of US imperialism coming home to roost. Next, Emma and Sarah expand on the relationship between police departments and the corporations involved in surveillance tech and data integration, before they wrap up by tackling tackle the Police’s “nothing to hide, nothing to fear” ideology when it comes to surveilling other communities in contrast to their complete rejection of any internal surveillance, and why data collection, much like algorithms and AI, can simply never be objective. Donna Murch then walks through the creation of Rutgers' multi-Union coalition in the wake of pandemic cutbacks, their bargaining process, and why NJ labor law is bolstering their fight, before concluding the conversation by walking through union demands, and how best to support them in this endeavor.

And in the Fun Half: Emma is joined by Matt Binder and Brandon Sutton as they tackle why you can’t spell Bud LiGhT without LGBT, James from Chicago land reveals Sam’s mystery role on The Magic School Bus, and the MR Crew dives into the absurd coverage of SF’s Tech Bro Stabbing. Bee from Queens dives into the ridiculous trans panic around sports, a GOP State Senator from Missouri votes against banning child brides, and LEGO goes WOKE! Sam from Toronto brings up the antithetical nature of popularism and majoritarian rule to leftist and progressive values, plus, your calls and IMs!

It's Hump Day! Emma hosts Aris Komporozos-Athanasiou, associate professor of sociology at University College London (UCL), to discuss his recent book Speculative Communities: Living with Uncertainty in a Financialized World. Then, Emma is joined by economist Nathan Tankus, proprietor of the Notes on the Crises newsletter, to discuss recent developments at the Federal Reserve and Silicon Valley Bank. First, Emma runs through updates on an impending recession, Memphis reinstating Justin Pearson to the Tennessee Statehouse, the identity of the Louisville shooter, Dianne Feinstein’s retirement, the drying of the Colorado River, and Alvin Bragg’s response to the attacks on him from the right, before diving into the recent letter from Rashida Tlaib and other progressive congressional members calling for the release of Julian Assange. Aris Komporozos-Athanasiou then dives right into defining “speculative communities,” as a community defined and united by its uncertain future, resigned to collective contemplation and anxiety with no solid structural support, before stepping back to explore “speculation” as a deterministic economic concept – an individual taking an unwanted risk for future gains – versus looking at it from a community perspective, as an open-ended engagement with our uncertain futures. This brings Professor Komporozos-Athanasiou to the topic of “political speculation,” which he defines as the weaponization of instability to capitalize on the confusion and anxiety it creates, as seen in the rise of right-wing populism in the wake of the 2008 financial crisis. Wrapping up, he and Emma tackle the role of enclosure in cutting off other community outlets for anxiety and structures for stability. Nathan Tankus and Emma then walk through what’s wrong with the Federal Reserve, from the absurdity of putting one agency in charge of the economy, to its obvious obsession with one side of its dual mandate. They conclude the interview by addressing the Fed’s response to the recent Silicon Valley bank run, and why the legislative deregulation of banking encourages administrative inaction.

And in the Fun Half: Hua from Raleigh dives into the role of gentrification in community displacement, Emma addresses yesterday’s Twitter drama, and the failures of popularism (especially in an electoral sense). Mitch from Glendale discusses Marianne Williamson’s candidacy, Emma and Bradley tackle the disappearance of Dianne Feinstein, watch Tucker Carlson quiver at the feet of his forgiving lord (Donald Trump), Elon Musk argues that he HAD to fire most of Twitter’s staff in order to waste money losing advertisers, and Jordan Peterson’s guest offers some of the most disgusting anti-trans arguments yet, plus, your calls and IMs!

Emma hosts Jake Bittle, staff writer at Grist, to discuss his recent book The Great Displacement: Climate Change and the Next American Migration. Then, she's joined by David Cohen, professor at Drexel Law School, to discuss the recent district court rulings on medication abortion in Texas and Washington State. And in the Fun Half, it's Dan From The Internet! First, Emma runs through updates on the identity of the Louisville bank shooter, statistics on gun violence in the US, Nashville reinstating Justin Jones to the Tennessee statehouse, and potential ethics hearings about Clarence Thomas’ relationship to billionaire GOP donor Harlan Crow, before diving into updates on the incredible Rutgers faculty strike and the support among students. Jake Bittle then dives right into his work exploring the existing displacement of myriad communities in the US due to environmental disasters, first walking through the parallels and contrasts he draws with the great migration of Black Americans from the South over the first half of the 20th Century, and the particular role that the chaotic nature of climate disaster plays in separating them. Next, Bittle walks through the various examples we have in recent years of climate displacement, from California wildfires to the flooding and weather in the South, to explore why failed capitalist policies – like those around housing and corporate exploitation – create insecure communities that cannot appropriately respond to immediate disasters, before looking to a particular community in North Carolina as a perfect example for why we need to emphasize resilience over relocation when these disasters strike. Professor David Cohen then parses through the last week in abortion news, with a carefully coordinated GOP lawsuit in Texas successfully overturning a multi-decade precedent by the FDA that approved the abortion pill Mifepristone. He and Emma discuss the particular role of Judge Matthew Kacsmaryk in pushing the GOP agenda through the US court system, analyze his absurd reliance on 1800s obscenities laws in his decision, and why this decision completely ignores medical studies and the authority of the FDA. Wrapping up, they tackle the impact this ruling might have on gender-affirming care, and other medical rights under threat.

And in the Fun Half: Emma is joined by Dan From The Internet! They reflect on their come-up at TYT, Dan making a deal with the devil to produce good progressive content, and the Right’s utter failure in pitching conservatism to the youth. Alex Jones and Stephen Crowder discuss the ANTI-WOKE victory that is the Super Mario Bros. premier, Owen from LA dives into candidates for the Democratic presidential nomination, and Anesh from India calls in to discuss the ultimate oppression: elective circumcision. Candace Owens goes on a pro-nationalist rampage, exploring why Hitler’s issue was invading Poland, not genocide, plus, your calls and IMs!

Happy Monday! In a pre-taped conversation, Sam speaks with Bruce Schneier, lecturer in Public Policy at the Harvard Kennedy School, to discuss his recent book A Hacker’s Mind: How the Powerful Bend Society’s Rules, and How to Bend them Back. First Emma, runs through updates on the leaking of classified documents about the Russian invasion of Ukraine, the potential reinstatement of Rep. Justin Jones to the Tennessee Statehouse, the revelations about Harlan Crow’s interests (beyond buying politicians), Rutgers’ faculty strike, and Israel’s expansive bombings over Ramadan, before parsing through the recent overturning (and overturning of said overturning?) of the multi-decade precedent of the FDA’s approval of the abortion pill Mifepristone. Next, Bruce Schneier dives right into the concept of hacking as a way to subvert the intent of a system while following its rules, something not inherently negative or criminal, as he walks Sam through myriad examples of non-digital hacking, from the first filibuster to the rules of F1 and cricket, and how those in power of the system responded. Sam and Schneier then turn more particularly to the role that power plays in this equation, with hacks against those with power getting codified out while hacks by the powerful are often accepted, walking through the politics of tax loopholes and financial “hacks” in comparison to the technological hacking of financial institutions and corporations. Wrapping up, they explore how to push back on this power imbalance, the role Artificial Intelligence, in particular, can play in helping the public scope out and regulate the hacks of the elites, and why keeping AI privatized is antithetical to its ability to level the playing field.

And in the Fun Half, Emma and Bradley discuss Clarence Thomas's Nazi-curious friend Harlan Crow and his breathless flop sweating defenders (Jonah Goldberg, David French, Ben Shapiro and...Glenn Greenwald), Jon Stewart taking on a Defense Department ghoul on C-SPAN, Nancy Mace surprisingly siding with AOC on not following freak Texas Judge Kacsmaryk's abortion court order, the tragic uncoupling of Elon Musk and Matt Taibbi, plus your calls & IM's!

It's Casual Friday! Emma hosts Alex Pareene, Contributing Editor at the New Republic and proprietor of the AP newsletter on Substack, to round up a CRAZY week in news. Then, Emma's joined by writer Jacob Silverman! First, Emma runs through updates on the threats to trans rights from the Supreme Court and Joe Biden, respectively, AOC on the impeachment of Clarence Thomas, Israel’s attacks on Palestinians observing Ramadan, a death row conviction being vacated, unemployment increases, and the outrageous $15 donation from the Judge in Trump’s NYC case, before parsing through the ousting of Justine Pearson and Justin Jones from the Tennessee statehouse for attempting to have a voice. Alex Pareene then joins as he and Emma walk through Donald Trump’s ongoing case in New York, the charges he’s facing, the impact it will (or won’t) have on the 2024 election, and why it reinforces his desire to regain the presidency. They also tackle this week’s results in Wisconsin’s special elections, and Scott Walker perfectly represents the GOP’s open warfare on the priorities and rights of young people, before they wrap up the interview by assessing Brandon Johnson’s victory in Chicago and what urban progressives can learn from it. Jacob Silverman also walks through the collapse of Sam Bankman-Fried’s FTX, and what it tells us about the worlds of crypto and Big Tech writ large, before he and Emma dive into Matt Taibbi’s recent evisceration at the hands of Mehdi Hasan, and the absurdity of being a journalist that gets countless facts wrong and refuses to be critical with their sources.

And in the Fun Half: Emma and Bradley dive into AOC’s statements on Clarence Thomas’ corruption, and how Congress will move forwards, Fox ignites a brand new culture war: now in Two-Ply! They also touch on the coverage of Israel’s attacks on Al Aqsa mosque, plus, your IMs!

It's Hump Day! Emma hosts  Jarod Facundo and Luke Goldstein, writing fellows at The American Prospect, to discuss the results from last night's mayoral race in Chicago. First, Emma runs through updates on yesterday’s election results, Trump pleading not guilty, and the right’s response to Wisconsin’s political shifts. Jarod Facundo and Luke Goldstein dive right into Brandon Johnson’s unapologetically left-wing campaign for Chicago Mayor, his rejection of the Chicago political establishment, and what his victory represents for progressivism across the nation. Next, they step back to assess how Brandon Johnson even found himself in this runoff against establishment candidate Paul Vallas,  after entering the race barely above 2%, walking through his campaign’s emphasis on the ground game, the role of local organizations like the Chicago Teachers Union and United Working Families, and what community organizing meant for his success. They also tackle the positive impact of his riskier policy strategies, presenting a wide breadth of solutions to the voters’ public safety worries rather than taking a “tough on crime” tact, and parse through the impact of Johnson’s and Vallas’ respective endorsements, before wrapping up by exploring this election in relation to Chicago’s recent corruption, and what it says about support for neoliberal politics and austerity.

And in the Fun Half: Emma discusses doubts around Trump’s 34 Felony charges with Will from Cincinnati, debates the reason behind a North Carolina Statehouse member’s party affiliation swap, and covers another piece of journalistic malpractice from a Bari Weiss outlet. Dave from Pennsylvania and Kenny from Berkeley discuss the impact of AI, Kid Rock teaches approximately 20 cans of Bud Light a lesson, and Joe from South Texas asks about the Lincoln Project. Emma also touches on the “Zazademon” alter ego of AOC, plus, your calls and IMs!

It's an extra special News Day Tuesday as Sam and Emma are on Trump INDICTMENT WATCH. Then they're joined by John Nichols, national affairs correspondent for The Nation, to discuss Tuesday's Wisconsin State Supreme Court race. First, Sam and Emma run through updates on far-right legislation advancing in Tennessee, Florida, and Mississippi, Finland’s introduction to NATO, Elon’s court order, and Bernie’s endorsement of Brandon Johnson for Chicago Mayor, before diving into the coverage of Donald Trump’s impending arraignment, featuring Alan Dershowitz live with Sean Spicer. John Nichols then joins and he and Sam immediately jump back to 2010, to reflect on the hijacking of Wisconsin’s political system by the Koch-funded right wing, coming to fruition with the election of Scott Walker in 2010, and seeing a mass gutting of labor rights, voting rights, and general political engagement. Next, Emma, John, and Sam parse through the consequences of this era, with the US’ worst case of gerrymandering cementing GOP control for the next decade, despite Democrats sweeping in state-wide races, leaving the only viable route back to democracy through the judiciary. This brings them to today’s special elections in Wisconsin, with the state’s Supreme Court and Senate both featuring massive races for the future of Wisconsin’s democracy. After looking at the issues that are central to Wisconsin’s special election, Nichols shifts to Chicago, walking through Brandon Johnson’s race against Paul Vallas, Vallas’ courting of the right wing, and the impact a Johnson victory could have on the progressive movement nationwide.

And in the Fun Half: Sam and Emma watch Tucker clamor to make New York look worse today than it was under conservative control (it’s not), talk philosophy with Ronald Raygun, and explore the mass financialization of American life with Jeff from Michigan. Ben Shapiro, notorious inspiration for multiple mass shooters, blames all trans people for the recent shooting in Tennessee, before talking with callers Ally from South Carolina about US Foods’ unionization, Tommy from California about civil liability for gun manufacturers, Nick from New Jersey about Rutgers’ teachers’ strike, and Eric from Minnesota about gun control discourse, plus, your calls and IMs!

Sam and Emma host Douglas Rushkoff, professor of Media Studies at Queens College, to discuss his recent book Survival of the Richest: Escape Fantasies of the Tech Billionaires. First, Sam and Emma run through updates on Trump’s arraignment, the Chinese Spy Balloon, opinions on Trump’s indictment, Trump’s growing lead over DeSantis, and the advancement of the Dominion vs. Fox case, before diving into James Trusty, Trump’s attorney, appearing on Fox. Douglas Rushkoff dives right into the genesis of his study on the escapist fantasies of tech billionaires, as he was invited to speak at a wealthy tech talk, only for the discussion to run off the rails into fantasies of post-apocalyptic autocracy. Parsing through this, Professor Rushkoff looks at the inverse relationship between wealth and empathic response, and explores why the ideology of big tech seeks to separate the capitalist from the labor exploitation that creates their capital, as seen in everything from their industrial practices to Musk’s colonies on Mars. This brings Rushkoff to the topic of “Effective Altruism” as a way for Tech entrepreneurs to excuse the exploitation and discrimination that comes from their products in favor of supposed future benefits for the next stage of humanity, and why philosophical arguments (rather than material ones) ground this reactionary libertarianism. Wrapping up, Douglas, Sam, and Emma tackle the refusal of tech “disruptors” to attempt disrupting capitalism, and what we can learn from Elon Musk’s Twitter debacle.

And in the Fun Half: Sam and Emma watch Matt Walsh argue that slavery was good because it gave us Matt Walsh, Dylan from Atlanta dives into crypto alternatives, and John Fetterman makes his first public comments on his recent battle with depression. A Republican Colorado school board resigns en-masse after harassment from OTHER Republicans, Dave from Jamaica reflects on Today’s interview and the vitriol of Matt Walsh, and Chris from Atlanta discusses the balance between voting on policy and voting on electability. Tristan from Wisconsin calls in ahead of tomorrow’s special election, plus, your calls and IMs!
