The Majority Report with Sam Seder

It's Casual Friday! Sam and Emma host Mehdi Hasan, host of The Mehdi Hasan Show on MSNBC and Peacock, to break down the week in news and discuss his recent book Win Every Argument: The Art of Debating, Persuading, and Public Speaking. First, Sam and Emma run through updates on the GDP and employment rate, regulation on “stadium” banks like SVB, the DOJ’s lawsuit against Norfolk Southern, Missouri voting to defund libraries for attempting to have constitutional rights, North Dakota’s “preferred-pronoun” ban, and Sam’s 19th year of being the perfect face for radio, before parsing through Donald Trump’s reaction to his indictment, live and unfiltered on Truth Social. Mehdi Hasan then joins as he gives his first reactions to the indictment of Donald Trump, reflecting on how many decades it took to finally hold this man accountable, and why this was the charge that finally broke him. Hasan also walks through the Right’s response to the indictment, as it drips with White Supremacist ideas of Jewish control and manipulation of Black and Brown folks, from Laura Ingraham’s discussion with Matt Gaetz to Trump’s own responses, before finally getting around to discuss Mehdi’s upcoming book, wrapping up the interview with Sam challenging him to a few quick debates.

And in the Fun Half: Sam and Emma talk with Ayman from the Table Moments Podcast about Social Security solvency, and putting our life and future in the hands of Big Tech corporations instead of the government, Ari from Seattle posits questionable empathy tests for suffrage, and Andrew from San Diego shows that even libertarians can want communism. Tim Pool breaks down about the idea of Sam Seder, and Chaya Raichik goes to Capitol Hill to meet hero AOC, plus, your calls and IMs!

It's another EmMajority Report Thursday! She hosts Matthew Connolly, professor of international and global history at Columbia University, to discuss his recent book The Declassification Engine: What History Reveals About America's Top Secrets. Then, Emma speaks with Orly Noy, editor at Local Call and chair of B'Tselem's executive board, to discuss her recent piece in +972 Magazine entitled "Do Israeli protesters really want democracy?" First, Emma runs through updates on a rollback of the Iraq war authorizations, Netanyahu’s response to Biden, price gauging in the egg market, the Trump Grand Jury in New York, Texas’ anti-gay judicial decision, Biden advancing open drilling in the Gulf of Mexico, and far-right legislation coming out of Kentucky, West Virginia, and Florida, before diving into Mitt Romney, notorious job killer, running cover for Howard Schultz on the Senate floor. Mattew Connelly then joins as he walks through the current state of the US’ secrecy state and the outrageously massive extent of it, with the agency responsible for tracking classified document numbers declaring that they officially lost count five years ago, leading to the recent news revelations around the hoarding of documents at the homes of Donald Trump, Mike Pence, and Joe Biden. Next, Connelly steps back to trace the evolution of the US’ “Dark State” from the Constitutional Convention, with the Framers enshrining Congress’ right to keep deliberations secret while still acknowledging the President’s need to act with secrecy and dispatch, through an era of general transparency from the state, and up to the start of the Second World War. From here, Matthew and Emma parse through the extensive expansion of the US intelligence and secrecy apparatus that aligned with the complete expulsion of marginalized identities from the Federal Government in the wake of the Second World War, ingraining a very particular white-male perspective throughout these institutions, before looking deeper at the impact of the US Elites’ Cold War anxieties and how they extended far beyond foreign fears, with the Pentagon running secret domestic war scenarios (for instance: race war). Wrapping up, Connelly walks through the evolution of the Dark State over the last few administrations, its relationship to US imperialism, and why he uses the term “Dark State” instead of “Deep State.” Orly Noy then joins as she and Emma attempt to tackle Israel’s relationship with democracy amidst a period of (supposedly pro-Democracy) political protests and the country’s ongoing apartheid regime, looking at the importance of considering all communities extending from the river to the sea when discussing Israeli democracy. From here, they work to assess the inherently anti-democratic nature of a system built on injustice and supremacy, and why “democracy for me and fascism for thee” will never be sustainable.

And in the Fun Half: Emma is joined by Matt Binder and Brandon Sutton as they watch Chaya Raichik struggle to fill the boots of Goebbels and the like, Pat Robertson accidentally answering a question about trans folks as a Christian rather than a fascist, and assess how much the Right-Wing truly drives culture war BS. Spacko, the Voice of Scam Economy, calls in to discuss mass social media harassment and legal recourse, Mark from New Mexico discusses James O’Brien’s concept of contempt for the conmen and compassion for the conned, and the MR Crew cover the San Jose Police Officer’s Association’s role in drug trafficking and Jamaal Bowman confrontation over gun control. Lucy from Delaware takes on the importance of calling out the fascist legislation cropping up across the US, plus, your calls and IMs!

It's Hump Day! Sam hosts Hannah Story Brown, writer and researcher at The Revolving Door Project, to discuss her recent piece on Biden's approval of The Willow Project. Then, Sam speaks with Michelle Eisen, organizing member of Starbucks Workers United, on her experience organizing Starbucks stores all across the country. First, Sam runs through updates on Biden labeling Bibi Netanyahu persona non grata in the wake of severe authoritarian shifts in Israel, the NY Grand Jury announcing no announcement of charges against Trump this week, Pence to appear before the January 6th Grand Jury, how the Nashville shooter was able to acquire guns, a Credit Suisse whistleblower, the FDA approving Narcan for over-the-counter sale, and Tucker’s upcoming testimony in court, before parsing through the highlights from Howard Schultz testimony during this morning’s HELP Committee. Hannah Story Brown then walks Sam through the long-term process to pass the Willow Project, with ConocoPhillips, a Texas-based oil company, proposing a drilling project in the arctic wilderness of the Alaskan North Slope that was swiftly approved by the Trump administration, only for Environmental groups to successfully challenge it in court, and force the issue onto Biden’s table. Looking at this next phase in Willow’s development, Story Brown tackles the minimally updated environmental reviews done by the Biden administration, not only refusing to consider not-drilling as an option, but only cutting the project back by 8%, despite both acute local risks, and the grander global issue of climate change. Wrapping up, Sam and Hannah discuss the role of corporate interest in moving this environmental fiasco along, and dive into the impact of Biden’s new Chief of Staff, Jeff Zients. Michelle Eisen then joins, diving into her background as a Starbucks worker, working part-time up until the pandemic shut down her primary trade, and what it was like to see the company’s commitment to their workers dwindle further and further, until the public health crisis of COVID-19 became the final straw, with the company asking workers to break the law and put their own safety at risk with little compensation, all while touting record-breaking profits. Next, Eisen and Sam parse through the unionization process with Starbucks Workers United, both as a single workplace and as the first of hundreds to be unionized in the US, and the necessity of maintaining active in the face of militant union-busting, before they wrap up by covering the union’s major asks, and why legislation such as the PROAct can help make it happen.

And in the Fun Half: Sam basks in the public evisceration of Howard Schultz, as Ed Markey and Bob Casey take him to task while he whines about being labeled a “Billionaire,” despite once not having a billion dollars. Sam responds to Joe Rogan’s recent spineless callout, “Matt Taibbi” calls in to discuss the unfair treatment of journalists, and KJ from Wisconsin dives into the upcoming election. Asanti from Jersey talks AI art, Bruce from Florida discusses the heel turns of Glenn Greenwald and Matt Taibbi, and Tim Pool once again forgets to read the article he’s citing ahead of time. Plus, your calls and IMs!

Sam and Emma host Meron Rapoport, editor of Local Call, to discuss his recent reporting on the protests in Israel over Prime Minister Netanyahu's proposed judicial reforms for +972 Magazine and Mekomit. First, Sam and Emma run through updates on yesterday’s mass shooting in Nashville, testimony from banking regulators about $13 Billion of SVB’s uninsured deposits coming from 10 billionaires, NC expanding Medicaid, Dollar General’s safety violations, the NLRB coming after Chipotle, Howard Schultz being forced to testify in front of Bernie, and the NYT’s warning to staff that signed the open letter asking for “facts” to be “used” in articles about trans people, before parsing through the Right Wing’s immediate attempt to use the shooting in Nashville to vilify trans people (despite the large majority of targeted shootings being carried out by far-right extremists), and watch the right continue to argue for keeping children hungry. Meron Rapoport then joins as he dives right into the developments over the last four weeks (since his last appearance) in Bibi Netanyahu’s attempt to nullify the power of the judicial branch, first looking to the drive behind this authoritarian move, capitalizing on Israel’s lack of a constitution to bolster the power of his far-right coalition, while opening up pathways to the homophobic, misogynist, and the genocidal policy of his allies. After a brief conversation on the narrative of Bibi and his allies as anti-democratic, Emma, Sam, and Meron look to the overwhelming popular response from Israeli citizens to push back against this “reform,” with millions pouring out onto the streets over the last few weeks, culminating in the last 48 hours, where military personal have joined citizens in protest. Next, Rapoport walks through Bibi’s response to the protest, putting a delay on his authoritarian maneuver while attempting to form a private militia under minister control, before they wrap up by assessing Israel’s relationship to democracy as an apartheid state, the concept of pro-democracy protests that do nothing to address apartheid, and whether potential calls for a constitution will be viable.

And in the Fun Half: Sam and Emma watch Donald Trump lay into Ron DeSantis’ lack of loyalty, Fox hosts from Laura Ingraham to Brian Kilmeade plead with Trump to lay off DeSantis, and Maria Bartiromo runs to the defense of poor Matt “got criticized by the left” Taibbi. Matt Walsh extols the value of genocide, plus, your calls and IMs!

Sam and Emma host Jeff Sharlet, professor of English at Dartmouth College, to discuss his recent book The Undertow: Scenes From a Slow Civil War. First, Emma and Sam run through updates on the Manhattan Grand Jury returning to their Trump deliberations, the LA school strike, the Supreme Court declining to address Kansas’ severe racial gerrymandering, UAW’s election drama, and an ex-Tucker Carlson producer testifying on behalf of dominion, before diving into Israel’s ongoing mass protests of Netanyahu stripping the judiciary’s power, and the cognitive dissonance of Israel’s “democracy for me and fascism for thee” perspective on the apartheid state. Jeff Sharlet then dives right into how his work reviews the United States’ failing relationship with fascism, and how he views his own relationship to it, as a long-time journalist covering the Right Wing, walking through the complete refusal to even use the term “fascist” to describe the right until Trump’s rise to power, and how his ascendency saw a marked shift of Christian Nationalism towards a cult of personality. After a brief definition of fascism, Jeff, Sam, and Emma parse through what role the cult of personality plays in fascism, and how the Christian Theocrats see Trump as more of an avatar, a tool of god to unite the right, before stepping back to look at the evolution of fascism over the last 80 years, looking at the global rise of fascism today, and its continued connection to cultures of aggrievement. Next, Sharlet looks to the 2020 election and end of Trump’s reign as a particular spark under the far-right, igniting their theocratic attacks on abortion and trans people, also touching on how the far right, and everyone else, view this “slow civil war.” Wrapping up, they explore the concept of the “rabbit hole” of the far right, the absurdity of appealing to a politics of irrationalism with rationalism, and why the strongest measure in the fight against fascism is stepping up and building beautiful things that people want to be a part of.

And in the Fun Half: Sam and Emma cover Biden’s incredibly mediocre response to criticism over the Willow project, Sam reflects on his appearance on the PBD pod, and Daniel from PA refutes the corporate claim that companies are job creators. Adam from New Jersey dives into non-US coverage suggestions, Donald Trump recycles 2-decade-old GOP talking points, and James Comer thinks Congress should decide local laws. Montana State Senator Daniel Zolnikov goes off on his NIMBY constituents, and Anesh from India argues that the patriarchy was an accident, but feminism is oppression, plus, your calls and IMs!

It's an All Calls Casual Friday! Sam is back from sunny Florida after his appearance on the PBD Podcast. Him and Emma are then joined by comedian Andy Kindler, host of the Thought Spiral podcast! First, they run through updates on a Jan 6 insurrectionist launching a defamation case against Fox for painting him as a Federal infiltrator, the US’ airstrikes in Syria, the Donald Trump Grand Jury going on break, Montana youth suing their state for fossil fuel abuses, the end of the LA school strike, and 2022’s sharp uptick in book bans, before diving into Donald Trump’s recent Truth social breakdown. John from Indiana and Bee from Queens call in to discuss members of the left media laundering transphobic talking points (however innocently they may be doing so), Jay from Atlanta talks about TikTok’s trial, and Matt from Grand Rapids reflects on a Tucker Carlson segment from last night. Andy Kindler then joins as he and Sam reflect on the iconifying of various conservative figures during the US’ propaganda push at the start of the Iraq war, including the production of multiple action figures, before parsing through Matt Walsh’s defense of being a horrible husband (“its a JOKE” ). Louisa from Massachusetts dives into the legislative repression of medical procedures, before Sam walks through his recent appearance on the Patrick Bet-David (BPD) Podcast, from the social security debate to jailing rich people. Michael from Miami tackles Florida’s changing electorate and Yosef from Israel reflects on Bibi’s most recent authoritarian action, plus, your calls and IMs!

It's an EmMajority Report Thursday! She hosts Natalia Mehlman-Petrzela, professor of history at The New School, to discuss her recent book Fit Nation: The Gains And Pains Of America's Exercise Obsession. Then she is joined by Daniel Finn, features editor at Jacobin, to discuss his recent piece "Britain’s Power Elite Has Defeated Its Challengers by Creating a Political Wasteland". Emma first runs through updates on another Fed interest rate increase, a Federal appeals judge ruling against Trump, Biden shutting down the White House’s COVID response team, the Senate voting to keep the AUMF, the Chicago Teachers’ union backing Brandon Johnson, and various updates on far-right challenges to democracy and Queer life, before parsing through Bernie Sanders’ confrontation with Moderna over their planned vaccine price gauge. Natalia Mehlman-Petrzela then joins as she and Emma dive right into the history of America’s fitness obsession and the complicated push and pull between progress with self-expression and corporations capitalizing on developing misogynist and capitalist expectations. First, Mehlman-Petrzela looks to the legacy of Jack LaLanne, the first Fifties fitness guru, and how his programs served to start a shift from seeing fitness as an ego-driven hobby to a fundamental aspect of self-improvement and health with broad consensus. After parsing through LaLanne’s particular marketing to suburban housewives, Natalia and Emma tackle the development of the fitness industry not around communal ideas of public health, but hyper-individualized concepts of self-improvement that nestled somewhere between labor and leisure, and how this saw success across the political spectrum, before wrapping up the interview with the impact of the 2008 financial crisis, fitness’ full transformation into a consumptive industry, and the hyper-atomization that we’ve seen since develop over the last few years. Daniel Finn and Emma then parse through his recent piece responding to the Economist’s dubbing of a new era of British politics as a new “Great Moderation,” which attempts to paint the active expulsion of the left wing from politics as a return to a politics of managerial competence after a period of populist demagoguery. Parsing through this, Finn tackles the very-much-still-relevant presence of the populist far-right in British politics and why that is seen as valuable to the center-right establishment, before he and Emma step back to assess how the British establishment was able to expunge the left wing of the labor party from mainstream politics. They first look to the material foundation of the 2008 financial crisis that was met with a decade of British austerity which completely crippled the working class, also exploring the two challenges it faced: one in the form of Scottish independence led by Nicola Sturgeon and the other in the emergence of a Labour movement led by Jeremy Corbyn. Wrapping up the interview, Finn walks Emma through the process through which the British establishment, bolstered by the mainstream press, was able to fearmonger over wedge-issue culture wars, taking a single element of a popular platform (trans rights for Sturgeon and pro-Palestine support for Corbyn) and painting it as a broad strokes undemocratic attack on a minority group.

And in the Fun Half: Emma is joined by Brandon Sutton and Matt Binder as they talk with Brian from Flagstaff about gun buyback’s potential in the US, also watching Russell Brand rep the Rumble brand, and the recent TikTok congressional hearing. Alena from VA on the coverage of Marianne Williamson, Charlie Kirk and Chaya Raichik use TikTok to connect the transphobic and anti-Chinese moral panics, and we get the previews of Sam’s appearance on the PBD podcast, plus, your calls and IMs!

Sam and Emma host Meg O'Connor, senior reporter with The Appeal, to discuss her recent piece "POLICE KILLED HIS SON. PROSECUTORS CHARGED THE TEEN’S FRIENDS WITH HIS MURDER.". Then, they're joined by Kathy Hempstead, senior policy advisor at the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, to discuss the impending unwinding of Medicaid continuous enrollment benefits. First, Sam and Emma run through updates on DeSanctis floundering in a theoretical primary, Twitter’s antisemitism problem, TikTok’s CEO’s testimony, new anti-trans legislation in Arkansas and Georgia, and the author of Florida’s “Don’t Say Gay” bill pleading guilty to PPP fraud, before diving into Tucker Carlson’s musings on the potential arrest of Donald Trump. Next, Meg O’Connor dives right into the story of the murder of Jacob Harris, parsing through the Phoenix Police’s 12 hours of surveillance of Harris, 19, and three of his friends – some as young as 14 – the deletion of the Police Department’s internal communication from that period, and the charging of his compatriots with his murder. Stepping back, O’Connor walks through the robbery investigations by the Phoenix PD that led to this surveillance, why the complete lack of probable cause forced the police to delay any confrontation until the last possible moment, and how careless their ultimate approach to the situation was, before they wrap up by reflecting on how Phoenix prosecutors were able to turn the 11 bullets fired by their Police into the fault of his friends. Kathy Hempstead then runs Sam and Emma through what Medicaid’s impending breakdown actually entails, the role of joint Federal/State funding, and why dismantling this system is drastically more costly than keeping it in place.

And in the Fun Half: Emma and the MR Crew tackle the absurdity of the Ted Lasso performance at the White House Press Briefing, Marcus from Ohio calls in to debate gun control and assess the constant threats to private life, and Nikki Haley incorporates China hawkery into her defense of wokeness being more dangerous than COVID. Tusli continues her anti-trans grift, Alyssa from North Dakota reflects on her political environments, and Alex Jones, Stephen Crowder ask Trump to calm down the incitement while also claiming “what incitement?” Kowalski from Nebraska also calls in, plus, your calls and IMs!

Sam hosts Spencer Ackerman, columnist for The Nation and author of the Forever Wars newsletter on Ghost, to discuss his recent piece "The Unlearned Lessons From the War in Iraq".  Sam begins by running through updates on the IPCC’s report on catastrophic warming levels, a brand new Fox lawsuit, the LA school system heading into a 3-day strike, Biden blocking the DC City Council’s right to carceral reform, the Israeli government continuing their attack on the judicial branch, Macron surviving the no-confidence vote, and COVID declassifications, before diving into John Bolton’s musings on the 20th anniversary of the invasion of Iraq, as he laments the fact the US didn’t expand their failed military action even more. Spencer Ackerman and Sam then reflect on their own 2-decade relationship built around the developments of the US imperial project in Iraq, as they tackle the severity of American Amnesia around the conflict, before Ackerman walks through the two biggest lessons from the war that America has refused to learn – first on the horrors of American imperialism abroad, and second on why capitalism will always encourage these types of imperial extraction. Using these lessons as a broader lens, Sam and Spencer then look to the role of US intelligence in laundering the lies of the Bush administration alongside two decades of diminishing the horrors that we were conducting in the region, all while attempting to distance themselves from the products of their work (war crimes). Next, they turn to the role of mainstream media in further laundering the imperial perspectives, reflecting on news’ complete kowtow to the Bush administration, from the NYT’s famous “aluminum tube” story to a former Bush White House Press Secretary’s astonishment at the lack of pushback, before touching on how objectors and dissidents were painted as “unruly” and “mobs,” as they tackle the how the Iraq war built on the back of previous manufactured American crises. Wrapping up, Sam and Ackerman parse through the lingering impact of this era on American politics today, from how it affected COVID disinformation to what it can tell us about our current stand-off with China.

And in the Fun Half: Sam and the MR crew watch the right-wing response to a potential Trump arrest, from Lindsay Graham and Kevin McCarthy claiming that criminal justice IS suddenly political, to Lindell and Ben Shapiro on why this will beget a Trump victory. Kyle from Queens discusses recovering from his Dave Rubin era, Alena from Virginia parses through Marianne Williamson’s potential role in the Democratic Primary, and Michael Knowles debates the value of bringing back public executions. Carlos from Florida talks about the presence of LGBTQ communities in the south amidst severe legislative discrimination, and the Proud Boys get a rude welcome in NYC, plus, your calls and IMs!

Sam and Emma are back with news and reflection on the Invasion of Iraq. First, they run through updates on Trump’s impending arrest in New York, UBS acquiring Credit Suisse, debates over rolling back the Dodd-Frank rollbacks that let the SVB collapse slide, Wyoming’s crackdown on the abortion pill, a new IPCC report, Florida making their school book bans accessible to any aggrieved parent, Macron’s impending no-confidence vote in France, Howard Schultz quitting his post at Starbucks rather than testify in front of Bernie Sanders, and revelations about Reagan and his team’s role in the delayed Iran hostage crisis. Next, they dive a little deeper into the response from Pence and DeSantis to the Manhattan DA’s charges against Trump, before they step back to reflect on the two-decade anniversary of the US’ invasion of Iraq. They parse through the lies and right-wing hawkery of Thomas Friedman, Colin Powell, and George W. Bush that pushed the US into this quagmire, and the absurd and inhuman perspectives that necessitated this war.

And in the Fun Half: Sam and Emma watch the Daily Wire hosts flaunt their complete incompetence as patriarchs, Val from Nashville walks through updates on Tennessee's Nazi-supported trans- and homophobic legislation, and Audrey from Seattle chats AI. Gregory from Oklahoma reflects on his campaign, Paul from Minnesota discusses FedEx’s relationship to organized labor, and a San Diego caller explores the difference between deficit and debt. Max from Arkansas talks with the crew about Andrew Yang’s Forward Party, plus, your calls and IMs!

It's Casual Friday! Sam and Emma host David Dayen, executive editor at the American Prospect to round up the week in news. Then, they're joined by Matt Strackbein, also know as The Letterhack, and filmmaker Janek Ambros to discuss Matt's comic book adaptation of Janek's 2019 film "Mondo Hollywoodland". Sam and Emma start off by taking a look at Elizabeth Warren's statement before the Finance Committee regarding SVB's collapse, and how the rollback of Dodd Frank regulations paved the way for this. Then David joins the show to discuss his Twitter hack, the Crapo bill that led to Dodd Frank rollbacks, who was responsible for regulating SVB in the first place, whether there were kickbacks involved, the need (or lack thereof) to bail out SVB's depositors, and whether Biden should look into firing Fed Chair Jay Powell and replacing him with a new Fed Chair. Then, Janek and the Letterhack join the MR Crew to discuss the genesis of Mondo Hollywoodland the movie as well as the comic book, as well as what's in store for the future.

And in the Fun Half, the MR Crew breaks down Jon Stewart's takedown of Larry Summers, Jimmy Dore's pampering of David Sacks, Maria Bartiromo still hawking COVID miracle cures on Fox airwaves, and a Florida man wrongfully sentenced to 400 years in prison finally freed. Plus, your IM's!

Emma hosts Kate Aronoff, climate reporter for The New Republic, to discuss her recent pieces regarding environmental social and corporate governing, or ESG. Then, she's joined by Trita Parsi, Executive Vice President at the Quincy Institute, to discuss his recent piece in Foreign Affairs entitled "How China Became a Peacemaker in the Middle East", co-authored with Khalid Eljabri. First, Emma runs through updates on the abortion pill ban, the bailout of Credit Suisse, the rising probability of a recession, smog regulations, a potential freight rail merger, and statistics on COVID’s impact on pregnancy deaths, before parsing through Ro Khanna’s relationship to Silicon Valley and squaring his progressive positioning with his David Sacks fundraising. Kate Aronoff dives right into the recent GOP push (passing through both the House and Senate) against “Woke” Environmental and Social Governance (ESG) policies, watching Kevin McCarthy attempt to paint these programs as authoritarian mandates forcing retirement funds to invest in a left-wing agenda. Next, Aronoff walks Emma through the relationship of this Right-Wing project to their greater agenda of dismantling the administrative state, before they step back to tackle the actual relationship between ESG and major corporations, like BlackRock and Vanguard, looking at how these policies provide a path for rehabilitation of public opinion alongside copious tax breaks, while executives lobby behind the scenes to ensure that the policy never evolves to actual corporate regulation. Wrapping up, Emma and Kate explore the impact of Biden’s Inflation Reduction Act, and the future of environmental incentivization and regulation. Trita Parsi then jumps into the revelatory role of China in brokering a normalization agreement between Saudi Arabia and Iran, completely changing their previous stance on foreign policy, and showing that they must be taken seriously on the international stage when it comes to diplomacy. Next, they tackle the particular failure of the US’ multi-decade disaster in the Middle East, setting ourselves up as an inflammatory and biased outside actor that bends over backward for our allies, before they wrap up the interview with an assessment of the US elite’s China hawkery and the role it continues to play in the US’ refusal to promote Middle Eastern autonomy.

And in the Fun Half: Emma is joined by Brandon Sutton and Matt Binder as they tackle the revelations of Ron DeSantis’ various policies, from utensils to Ukraine, talk with Adam from Manhattan about the corruption behind our current financial moment, and Matt Lech goes all out on the conservative exploitation of hunger and poverty. Expanding on this, the crew tackles Minnesota State Sen. Steve Brazkowski’s denouncement of a school hunger program, and Jason from Minnesota calls in to give his take on the issue. They also discuss Russell Brand’s amicable appearance on Tucker Carlson and how it differs from his other relationships with corporate media, plus, your calls and IMs!

Sam and Emma host Kari Lydersen, journalism lecturer at Northwestern University and staff writer at Midwest Energy News to discuss her recent piece at In These Times entitled "The Case for Nationalizing the Railroads." Then, they're joined by Bethany Kosmicki of the Temple University Graduate Students Association (TUGSA), to discuss their recent ratifying of a tentative agreement between their association and the University. First, Emma and Sam run through updates on Russia downing a US drone, the DOJ and Fed’s responses to SVB’s failure, the 5th circuit abortion pill case, environmental lawsuits over Biden’s approval of the Willow project, the Senate repealing their authorization of the Iraq war, and some brand new bank runs, before diving into the labor celebrations around Michigan repealing their right to work policy and starting a new life for labor in the state. Kari Lydersen then joins as she dives right into the recent era of mass consolidation in the US freight rail industry alongside a shift towards “precision scheduling” that emphasizes efficiency, sidelining track segments, lines, and jobs that they saw as unprofitable, before parsing deeper through who this “efficiency” actually serves (the C-suite), as it undercuts the workforce, leaves shippers entirely at the whims of the rail companies when it comes to scheduling, and ultimately leaves these companies as shells of their former selves. Next, Lydersen, Sam, and Emma assess the massive boom in profits that the freight rail industry has seen over the last decade and a half, before wrapping up the interview by tackling what a nationalization of the freight rail industry would entail, and why it’s actually a lot more feasible than it might sound. Bethany Kosmicki reflects on the culmination of 6 weeks of striking with TUGSA, as she, Sam, and Emma discuss the importance of understanding striking as both a last-ditch effort and a tactic that workers must be willing to exercise, before wrapping up the interview with a conversation on the future of US labor relations with a younger generation that understands their value.

And in the Fun Half: Sam and Emma tackle Bethany ‘Grandma Killer’ Mendel going catatonic as she’s asked what “woke” means, and Larry Kudlow blames SVB’s collapse on “Woke Banking.” They also walk through revelations around the Atlanta PD’s murder of Cop City protester Tortaguita, Dalton from Ohio talks about ghost kitchens, and Dr. Karl from west Michigan discusses Germany’s relationship with Israel. Ben Shapiro freaks out about Europeans going swimming topless, and Colin from Nebraska runs through updates on State Sen. Machaela Cavanaugh’s filibuster over Nebraska’s anti-trans bills, plus, your calls and IMs!

Sam and Emma host Alexandra Scaggs, reporter for the Financial Times, to discuss the recent turmoil surrounding the Silicon Valley Bank and Signature Bank. First, Sam and Emma run through updates on inflation, the FDIC’s upcoming bank auctions, EPA water regulations, SCOTUS taking on a massive Shadow Docket case on trans rights, and South Carolina lawmakers proposing a death penalty for abortions, before diving into the incestuous dealmaking behind SVB’s collapse. Alexandra Scaggs then joins as she walks Sam and Emma through the four central elements of Silicon Valley Bank’s collapse, starting by assessing the rollback of the Dodd-Frank capital checks on banks with under $250 Billion in assets, which allowed SVB, the 16th biggest bank in the US, to completely undercapitalize without any awareness from regulators or the Federal Reserve. Next, Alexandra looks to the behind-the-scene shenanigans at SVB that kept them below the $250 Billion threshold, before turning to their relationship with depositors, making outlandish deals to get their clients to deposit well above the FDIC $250k insurance threshold. Bringing these various elements together, Scaggs explores how rumors of SVB’s undercapitalization with the Fed’s constant interest hikes were then spread to depositors, who made these losses official with en masse withdrawals during last Friday’s bank run. Wrapping up the interview, Alexandra, Sam, and Emma tackle how endemic this particular failure was to the ideology of Silicon Valley, one that is grounded in cash-poor companies with promises of future profits, alongside the general culture of Big Tech. Sam, Emma, and the MR Crew also discuss the SVB collapse’s relationship to the US’ general failure of centralized planning.

And in the Fun Half: Emma and Sam talk with Sterber from Idaho about the various disturbing bills coming out of the state, Sam eases Hamza from Utica’s fears of a 2008-esque recession, and Newsmax brings on the post-Great-Recession gold hawks in the wake of SVB’s collapse. They also summarize the Supreme Court’s upcoming shadow docket case on trans civil rights, watch Judge Kyle Duncan throw an absolute hissy fit in front of Stanford students, and Cuomo turns to the anti-progressive AIPAC grift. Mike in Orange County expands on the culture of Venture Capitalism that led to the SVB collapse, and Amy from Nashville parses through the potential impact of various anti-trans bills coming out of Tennessee. Trump continues his spectacular anti-DeSantis rants, plus, your calls and IMs!

Sam and Emma host Will Sommer, politics reporter for The Daily Beast, to discuss his recent book Trust The Plan: The Rise of QAnon and the Conspiracy That Unhinged America. First, Emma and Sam run through updates on the Fed and treasury rushing to bail out SVB depositors, Biden approving the massive environmentally-destructive Willow project, Norfolk Southern’s refusal to compensate affected homeowners, a Texas judge hiding proceedings around the abortion pill from the public, Saudi-Iran talks, and the Atlanta PD’s murder of Cop-City protestor Tortaguita, before diving into the right’s attempt to pin SVB’s collapse on going woke, rather than Trump’s rollback of post-2008 regulations. Will Sommer then dives right into the first seeds of Q-anon, stemming, most likely, from a South African programmer taking inspiration from a gonzo Hunter S. Thompson work that invented a bonkers drug derived from pedophiles, and going all in on both the evangelical fetishization of the purity of children and 4Chan’s obsession with fake leakers. Walking through the next stage of Q’s evolution, Sommer explores the hijacking of Q’s posts by the Watkins brothers on 8Chan, before Will, Sam, and Emma step back and tackle how the theocratic “ends justify the means” ideology grounds itself in anti-social and bigoted behaviors. Next, they walk through Q’s influence from the coded language of Rush Limbaugh, and parse through the genuine presence of Q’s followers at the pinnacles of American power, from Marjorie Taylor Greene to the Thomas family. After assessing the standing of Q in politics moving forwards, Sommer, Emma, and Sam wrap up the interview with an analysis of the various conspiratorial and exploitative networks that Q is a part of.

And in the Fun Half: Sam and Emma compare and contrast politicians’ takes on the SVB collapse, from Katie Porter on the Crapo Bill to Joe Lonsdale on protecting the “innovation” world from their own mistakes, Nancy Mace exemplifies the right’s attack on Social Security, and Lulu from Philly expands on the SVB collapse. Amir from VA responds to today’s interview on Q-Anon, and Charlie Kirk gets caught in his own election denialism. Linda from Texas recommends the work of Jessica Valenti, the Wall Street Journal blames the SVB collapse on the existence of Black and queer folks at the bank, Trent from Omaha discusses focusing on electoral issues, and Luke from Ithaca takes on the future of independent media, plus, your calls and IMs!

Heather Digby Parton, contributing writer at Salon.com and proprietor of the blog Hullabaloo, to round up the week in news. Then, Sam and Emma are joined by Matthew Film Guy! First, Emma and Sam run through updates on Manhattan’s prosecution of Donald Trump, Biden’s new tax plans, the RNC teaming up with Ronny DeSantis (who privately has affirmed a 2024 presidential campaign), Santos’ prolific history of scamming, a potential Saudi-Iran deal, and Manchin’s possible run vs Biden in 2024. They also tackle Nikki Haley positioning herself to be Ron DeSantis’ VP before Digby joins to dive deeper into this Republican rift that we see forming between Donald Trump’s crazy CPAC coalition, and the Republican donor class’ attempt to juxtapose Ron DeSantis’ “moderate” fascism against it, looking particularly to the rhetoric about entitlements and the deficit that is coming out of the two camps. Looking forwards, Digby walks Emma and Sam through Donald Trump’s likeliest routes to victory, before they wrap up the interview by tackling Joe Biden’s confirmed and likely challengers in a Democratic Primary. Matthew Film Guy then joins to run his soft propaganda campaign for H. Jon Benjamin, assessing the (once again) lackluster Oscar nominations, and giving his own film suggestions of “Post Tenebras Lux” and “Margaret.”

And in the Fun Half: Ed Markey goes after Norfolk Southern executives’ desire to escape accountability for the disaster in East Palestine and JD Vance forgets that deregulation is actually what caused the incident. A GOP Lt. Gov faces accusations of twink love (who amongst us!) after promoting multiple homophobic bills, and Matt Taibbi gets smacked around by Democratic establishment shills because he genuinely makes it that easy. It's an EmMajority Report Thursday! Emma hosts Nick Seabrook, Professor of Political Science and Public Administration at the University of North Florida, to discuss his recent book One Person One Vote: A Surprising History of Gerrymandering In America. Then, Emma's joined by writer Tim Shorrock, proprietor of The Shorrock Files on Patreon, to discuss the recent agreement by Japan and South Korea to offer reparations to South Korean laborers who were forced to work in Japan during wartime. Then, Emma's joined by writer Tim Shorrock, proprietor of The Shorrock Files on Patreon, to discuss the recent agreement by Japan and South Korea to offer reparations to South Korean laborers who were forced to work in Japan during wartime. First, Emma runs through updates on investigations into misconduct in the Louisville and Memphis Police Departments, Mitch McConnell’s hospitalization, Ed Markey’s staff unionizing, the Michigan House’s recent legislation, Sarah Huckabee Sanders’ loosening of child labor regulations, and the climbing Palestinian death toll in Israel’s 2023 apartheid regime, before diving deeper into an interaction with Oklahoma Senator Markwayne Mullin as he tells a Teamster representative to “shut [his] mouth” in a meeting about worker exploitation and union busting. Nick Seabrook then joins as he dives right into gerrymandering as a uniquely American problem, highlighting the fundamental conflict of interest in having representatives control the borders of the regions that elect them, a problem that the founding fathers actively wrought on the country. After exploring the nature of the founding fathers’ gerrymandering, Seabrook steps back to explore how gerrymandering emerged from the British political tradition of “rotten boroughs,” which served to allow MPs to maintain corrupt influence under the veneer of democracy, a tactic that they extended in the cutting up of foreign lands under settler-colonialism, only for it to be curbed as a tactic in Europe and highlighted as a tactic in the US. Next, Nick walks Emma through the 1800s and the coining of the term “gerrymandering” in the US, up to the Supreme Court stepping in in the 1960s to mandate the “one person-one vote” electoral system that we employ today, before they wrap up the interview by tackling the racial vote dilution that followed, the impact of the Voting Rights Act, and where the undermining of the Act has left our electoral system. Tim Shorrock takes us through the history of Japanese imperialism in Korea and the role the US played in the matter, before exploring the false advertisement of Secretary Blinken’s agreement as “reparations,” and why this PR move by the US serves to inflame tensions between the US, North Korea, and China.

And in the Fun Half: Emma is joined by Matt Binder and Brandon Sutton as they discuss Charlie Kirk and Glenn Greenwald clamoring to the defense of Tucker Carlson amidst Dominion’s suit against Fox, David from Colorado calls in discuss capitalism, fascism, and the various regulatory environmental disasters ready to happen across the US. They also tackle Matt Taibbi’s appearance in Congress – as his lack of journalistic integrity makes him an easy target for Briahna Joy Gray and Debbie Wasserman Schultz – before assessing Elon Musk’s recent HR disaster that occurred live on Twitter, plus, your calls and IMs!

Sam hosts Aaron Kleinman, director of research for the States Project at Future Now, to discuss the upcoming Wisconsin State Supreme Court election in April. Then they're joined by Peter Shamshiri, or Law Boy on Twitter, co-host of the 5-4 Podcast, to discuss the recent oral arguments before the Supreme Court. First, Sam runs through updates on the DOJ bringing a case against the Memphis PD, Biden’s budget (and its record-breaking defense spending), the reaction to Tucker Carlson’s white-washing of 1/6, and Twitter vs. the FTC, before diving into Elizabeth Warren’s takedown of Jerome Powell as he shunts one half of the Fed’s mandate (employment) in favor of the other (inflation). Aaron Kleinman then joins as he and Sam dive right into the Wisconsin Supreme Court race between Trump alumnus Daniel Kelly and “pro-democracy” Janet Protasiewicz, walking through the stakes – from election shenanigans to reproductive rights – before looking to the electoral nature of the state, with one of the country’s worst cases of gerrymandering, and wrapping up the interview exploring the Democrats’ success in special elections post-Dobbs, and how that could play out in the additional State Senate race. Peter Shamshiri and Sam then take on the status of Biden’s Student Loan relief program, summarizing the argument his administration is bringing in front of the Supreme Court, why said argument is so emergency-specific, and why the justices’ questions during oral arguments centered around administrative power. Expanding on this, Sam and Peter discuss the battle between the Chevron and Major Question Doctrines, and why the “standing” of the cases being brought against Student Debt relief is on flimsy ground, before wrapping up the interview by summarizing the Supreme Court’s recent cases regarding the constitutionality of the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau and the accountability of tech platforms for what their algorithms promote.

And in the Fun Half: Another Daily Wire theocrat (Michael Knowles) preaches about why divine right monarchy is better at limiting power than democracy, Republicans try to pin Norfolk Southern’s climate disaster on “diversity” while still refusing to bolster regulations, and Bernie Sanders launches his investigation into Howard Schultz’s mass exploitation. Kevin McCarthy and Tucker Carlson feel the heat for their Twitter-files-esque release of footage whitewashing January 6th, plus, your IMs!

It's News Day Tuesday! Sam and Emma break down the biggest headlines of the day. First, they run through updates on the DOJ stepping in to block JetBlue’s takeover of Spirit Airlines, Oklahoma’s weed vote, Atlanta protests at the developing Cop City, Florida and Ron DeSantis finally stepping up for the Davids of the world (insurance companies) as they take on Goliath (citizens), and Israeli protests shift to the military, before they watch the beautiful labor action in France as unions shut down the country ahead of Macron’s attempts to extend the retirement age. Then, Sam and Emma parse through Biden’s proposed budget adjustments to secure Medicare’s future, from extending solvency by increasing the income tax cap to closing up loopholes, before confronting the inevitable right-wing backlash and what public funding the GOP is likely to hold hostage. Wrapping up, they emphasize why the backlash to successful welfare programs – from the CTC to Medicare – is actually about undermining the revelation that our economic system doesn’t actually have to function the way we pretend it does.

And in the Fun Half: Emma, Sam, and the MR Crew parse through Tucker Carlson’s investigative reporting that reveals that some non-violence occurred alongside the violence of 1/6, Russell Brand kills it as a critically non-critical centrist, and the team talks with Jack from Maryland and get an update from Cigil on the Nigerian election. They also tackle Kerry Lake’s VP chances, discuss Karine Jean-Pierre’s derisive comments towards Marianne Williamson, and Americo from Mexico calls in to bolster the show’s support for trans rights. Sam and Emma discuss why Michael Knowlesism must be eradicated from public life, plus, your calls and IMs!

Sam and Emma host author Steve Paxton to discuss his recent book How Capitalism Ends: History, Ideology and Progress. First, Sam and Emma run through updates on clashes in and around Atlanta’s developing “Cop City,” DHS’s illegal domestic intel program, Biden vs. the airlines, the East Palestine clean-up, Kari Lake coming out of CPAC as the #1 GOP VP choice, and Meta and Google playing along with the criminalization of abortion, before diving deeper into recent protests in Israel after Netanyahu rolled back judicial powers, walking through what it would take to reverse Israel’s severe shift right in recent decades. Next, Steve Paxton joins as he dives right into his exploration of capitalism as both an important step in social progress, and one that brought about its own obsolescence, first stepping back to explore capitalism’s revolution of humanity’s productive capacity, shifting society’s primary problem for the survival of its most marginalized from an issue of capacity to one of distribution, before looking to capitalism’s emphasis on equality of individuals, particularly in production and political participation, and how this promise was used to legitimize the emerging bourgeois class’ right to the means of production. Next, Steve walks Sam and Emma through capitalism reaching its critical mass in terms of social “progress,” with the profit incentive diverging from societal needs while technological innovation becomes largely driven by state-sponsored investment in universities, before they look to the development of the Right-Left binary as one not grounded in policies, but in pushes for and against social progress. Wrapping up, Paxton tackles the future evolution of socialism and labor relations that are built around public ownership of the means of production, and why the nationalization of particular industries (electric, healthcare) should be the primary focus of the Left.

And in the Fun Half: Emma, Sam, and the MR Crew tackle the future of the social security fight, the lingering impact of the death of Rush Limbaugh, and CPAC’s various shitshows, from Nikki Haley calling out the “woke virus” to Michael Knowles’ explicitly genocidal rhetoric. Anthony from Long Island discusses his upcoming campaign in Brookline, MA, Christina from SC discusses her state’s upcoming attack on abortion rights, and Sandy from Ontario platforms her country’s trans refuge bill. Dave Rubin comes out in support of Scott “Black People Are a Hate Group” Adams, and John Oliver eviscerates Ron DeSantis. Jordan from SoCal dives into the gamification of Amazon’s surveillance programs, plus, your calls and IMs!

It's Casual Friday! Sam and Emma host David Dayen, executive editor at the American Prospect to round up the week in news. First, Sam and Emma run through updates on the Federal Reserve’s continued battle against labor, DeSantis going full fascist with the Florida legislature, the House ethics investigation into George Santos, Norfolk Southern’s cleanup in East Palestine, and Bari Weiss’ support of bonkers anti-trans “reporting,” before parsing through Joe Biden’s recent statements against the democratic right of the citizens of DC to be legislated by their elected officials. David Dayen then joins as he dives right into the move of Labor Sec. Marty Walsh to the Boston Bruins, the minimal void he leaves behind him, and what we can expect from Julie Su’s assumption of his position, walking through the policy that will be on her Department of Labor’s table, and their main job of sustaining the new workforce coming out of the CHIPs Act and the IRA. Next, David briefly walks Sam and Emma through ongoing discussions about Biden’s new FAA appointment, before shifting the conversation to the battle between labor and monopoly coming to a head with an upcoming airline merger seeing a battle between JetBlue and Spirit unions, and the regulatory failures of the freight industry resulting in Norfolk Southern’s chemical disaster in East Palestine. Wrapping up, David dives deeper into Norfolk Southern’s PR “clean-up,” and tackles the rhetorical pinning of inflation on labor.

And in the Fun Half: Emma and Sam discuss Fox tiptoeing around acknowledging their impending lawsuit with Dominion, Josh from New Jersey reflects on the Warren-Sanders split in the 2020 primary, and Ben from Long Island takes on the state of the job market. John from Southern Jersey talks about East Palestine, Tim Pool’s dad speaks out about Tim’s hypocrisy, and CPAC starts out exactly as stupidly as you’d expect. Burnon from KY pitches some risotto tactics and updates Sam on the bourbon industry, plus, your calls and IMs!

Emma hosts Dr. Annelle Sheline, Middle East Research Fellow at the Quincy Institute for Responsible Statecraft, to discuss her recent piece "Ending Counterproductive U.S. Involvement in Yemen." First, Emma runs through updates on Bernie launching a vote to subpoena Howard Schultz in the wake of their egregious and widespread anti-union practices, Blinken’s conversations with Russian representatives, the Havana pseudo-Syndrome, Norfolk Southern union workers getting sick at the East Palestine clean-up site, the cooling labor market, voters’ concerns about Biden’s age, Oregon’s UBI for homeless families, and the GOP’s congressional aims, before diving deeper into Biden’s successful Student-Debt-relief arguments in front of the Supreme Court. Dr. Annelle Sheline then joins as she and Emma reflect on their previous conversations on US involvement in Yemen, assessing the staunch stance by both the Trump and Biden administrations to stand against any Congressional War Powers Resolutions, with Trump openly embraced the Saudi-led war while Biden plays both sides, supporting more Saudi airstrikes in the region while vocally supporting a continuation of peace. Next, Dr. Sheline walks through the state of this 8-year-long humanitarian crisis, looking to comparisons with the Russian invasion of Ukraine and Israeli apartheid as they tackle Yemenis’ reliance on dwindling humanitarian aid and the massively destructive impact of blockades – which serve to destroy entire public institutions, infrastructure, and the futures of myriad generations – before she and Emma parse through the various parties involved in shifting this civil war into a proxy war, how and why they became involved, and why this outside funding (from all sides) can only serve to prolong this destruction. Wrapping up, they assess the role of the US in particular, their continued devastation reigned over the Middle East, a potential military pivot to the pacific, and why military-based competition with China would be an outrageously foolish move for the US elite to make.

And in the Fun Half: Emma is joined by Matt Binder and Brandon Sutton as they talk with Kowalski from Nebraska on the recent revelations about child and migrant labor and get an agricultural update from his farm. They also watch Israeli officials espouse virulently genocidal rhetoric and discuss the culpability of the international community in supporting the apartheid, Matt Walsh actively lies about his elite cohort as they push back against working-class access to education, and Adam and Valerie call in from Iowa to discuss the hypocritic and genocidal demonization of trans people and Cocaine Bear. Newsmax dives into the political role of their “mongoloid” demographic, plus, your calls and IMs!

Sam hosts Meron Rapoport, editor of Local Call, to discuss his recent reporting on the conflict in Israel & Palestine for +972 Magazine. Then, they're joined by ProPublica reporters J. David McSwane & Ryan Gabrielson to discuss their recent piece "A Christian Health Nonprofit Saddled Thousands With Debt as It Built a Family Empire Including a Pot Farm, a Bank and an Airline". First Sam kicks off with President Biden's remarks in Virginia Beach yesterday, where he (smartly) reminded everyone that every single Republican during his State of the Union address stood up to protect social programs...and were on camera doing so. He pairs this with former President Trump, who seemingly has gotten his groove back, continuing to piledrive Ron DeSantis over his support for cutting so-called "entitlements." Then, Sam's joined by Meron as they dive into the recent demonstrations in Israel over the judicial "reforms" that President Netanyahu and his far-right coalition want to implement, as well as the tremendous violence that has occurred over the last few days in Israeli settlements. Meron goes so far as to consider this one of, if not the most combustible time in history internally within Israel. Then, David and Ryan join Sam to break down their new bombshell reporting in ProPublica about Liberty HealthShare, a healthcare sharing ministry that, under the auspices of providing health services as a religiously affiliated non-profit, avoided almost all regulatory scrutiny while committing massive amounts of fraud.

And in the Fun Half, Sam and the gang  touch on poor "Meatball" Ron DeSanctimonious trying to hit back (weakly) at Trump on Fox while Trump runs wild on Seb Gorka's program, the new China hysteria on Capitol Hill  coming from FBI Director Wray on the lab leak and Rep. Matt Gaetz...spouting Chinese propaganda in a congressional hearing? And let's not forget Greg Gutfeld saying COVID didn't allow anyone to be racist! Also, Lindsey Graham gets hysterical about immigrants crossing the border and never leaving (a claim a NYTimes report directly refutes *this morning*). Paul Ryan and Charlie Sykes sit down for some reputation laundering about his membership on Fox's board, plus your IM's!
