It's the LAST Casual Friday of 2022! The MR Crew are doing a clips-and-calls show before the holidays, and are also joined by Matthew Film Guy (@langdonboom)to discuss the recent Sight & Sound poll! First, Sam, and Emma run through updates on the final report from the January 6th committee, NY Gov Hochul fitting perfectly into the Cuomo mold, Sam Bankman-Fried paying off his $250 million bond in fiat currency, and Congressman-elect George Santos’ crumbling resume, before diving into the $1.7 trillion spending bill making it through the Senate and House, revamping the GOP leadership debate (and perhaps bringing Steve Scalise into the fold). Then, they take calls with Jay from New Haven on CT’s solar energy policy, Aaron from Madison on fighting back against the Independent State Legislature Theory, and Amy from San Francisco on QAnon Anonymous' deep dive into Tusli Gabbard’s cult. Then, they’re joined by Matthew Film Guy as he dives right into the drama surrounding Sight & Sound’s recent “Greatest Films of All Time” poll where Citizen Kane and Vertigo were finally overtaken for the #1 spot by a WOMAN-DIRECTED movie “Jeanne Dielman, 23 Commerce Quay, 1080 Brussels.” They walk through the anti-woke backlash to this result, as Matthew dives into the difference between an active culture war and the democratization of a poll, with Sight & Sound expanding the number of voters beyond a couple of hundred for the first time in their history, before launching into the beauty and vision of Chantal Akerman’s boundary-pushing work, its long-term rise into mainstream discourse, and the importance of creating art with sensitive visions of life.

And in the Fun Half: Sam and Emma watch AOC tackle the USPS deal and their shift toward Electric Vehicles being undermined by Louis DeJoy putting a scab facility at the center of the production, Drew from Portland Oregon calls in to discuss DeSantis’ alternate health agency and the impact it could have on the Right’s war on trans care, and John from San Antonio walks through the massive boom in union support that we’ve seen in 2022. They also dive deeper into Kathy Hochul’s nomination of a severely conservative judge to New York’s Chief Justice position, and Matt Taibbi’s response to critiques (such as Matt Taibbi from a year ago) of him doing PR for a billionaire. Revis from the Twin Cities reveals a Sam Seder cameo in the Magic Schoolbus, Candace Owens has some thoughts on the Confederate Flag, and Charlie from Washington explores how to push your state to become a safe space for trans folks escaping persecution, plus, your calls and IMs!

Emma hosts Karen Levy, Assistant Professor of Information Sciences at Cornell University, to discuss her recent book Data Driven: Truckers, Technology, and the New Workplace Surveillance. Emma first runs through updates on Zelesnkyy’s congressional address, Senate Republicans obstructing Biden’s funding bill, and Sean Hannity’s admission under oath that he didn’t buy much of the election-denying shenanigans on his OWN SHOW, also touching on Rep Kevin Brady’s speaking out against holding powerful people to account financially. Karen Levy then joins as she dives right into the supposed “trucker shortage” that the US is facing right now, exploring why there are, in fact, many truckers available, they’re just not getting paid enough to continue work in the industry, before stepping back to analyze the impact of four decades of deregulation of the industry, bringing about dropping wages, raising hours, and falling safety levels. Continuing this analysis, Professor Levy walks Emma through the precipitous decline of the role of unions and teamsters in an industry that was previously known for its labor forces, with the government still proclaiming the work as “essential” while refusing to meet the needs of the workers, from wages to infrastructure and more. Next, Emma and Karen discuss the little bit of trucking regulation that the government has actually stood behind, parsing through their surveillance requirements for digital tracking of truckers, walking through its failure to address the root issue it was supposed to address (worker safety) and how it provided an infrastructure for the corporations to ramp up their own surveillance measures, pushing biometric monitoring and predictive analytics that push their workers to abuse stimulants and push their bodies to the limits. Wrapping up, they tackle potential solutions that Professor Levy sees as possible and that actually target the issue at hand by detaching payment and protections from miles driven or hours worked.

And in the Fun Half: Emma talks with Hamish from Taho on cashews and veganism, and Dr. Phill hosts an anti-teacher-union hack to discuss why public school teachers are swindling the US out of billions (that they refuse to spend on themselves)! Then, she’s joined by Matt Binder and Brandon Sutton as they reflect on Sam Bankman-Fried and Rep. Tom Emmer (R-MN) showering each other in golden thank-yous, and Alex from New York calls in with a few matchups. They also tackle Andrew Callaghan’s killer confrontation with Don Lemon on the fear-mongering motive of the 24-hour news cycle, and Neil deGrasse-Tyson clamors to Elon Musk’s defense. Jay from North Carolina discusses term limits and making a more robust democracy, plus, your calls and IMs!

Sam and Emma host Dr. MarkAlain Dery, infectious disease specialist at AccessHealth Louisiana and host of the Noise Filter podcast, to discuss the current state of COVID-19 and RSV heading further into the winter season. Then, they are joined by Leo Schwartz, reporter at Fortune Magazine, to discuss the recent congressional committee hearings surrounding FTX CEO Sam Bankman-Fried. First, Sam and Emma run through updates on the release of Trump’s tax returns, Zelensky’s appearance in DC, Wells Fargo’s multi-billion fraud fine, and the newest iteration of the Twitter Files, before diving into the Right’s response to the embarrassment, harassment, and destruction that can come from the disclosure of tax returns. Then, Dr. MarkAlain Dery joins as he dives right into the crisis of a re-emergence of the flu and RSV (respiratory syncytial virus) coinciding with a renewed public bout with COVID, tackling whether the return of the various repertory and inflammatory viruses has to do with a lack of immunity due to COVID precautions, or if it’s simply a result of increased testing of these types of illness, before diving into the impact of inflammatory diseases in increasing risk of heart attack and stroke. Next, Dr. Dery walks through the evolving COVID policy in China, and the impact that can have on the international stage, before walking through the emerging new variants, vaccine boosting, and the various social comorbidities that we have seen in the US. Leo Schwartz then joins as he tackles what the hell Sam Bankman-Fried’s FTX actually is, how they first expanded the crypto trading world before bending the rules of trade themselves, and wrap up the interview by parsing through the role of SBF and FTX in using Washington connections to help legitimize the role of crypto in US politics writ large.

And in the Fun Half: Sam and Emma discuss COVID, Crypto, and Dore, much to a listener’s chagrin, Dave from Jamaica stops by the studio, and Joe Manchin reminds us that the true bipartisanship was the platitudes we made along the way. Tim Pool stumbles into hosting another anti-semite on his show as he tackles whether or not Kanye is turning Jews to god, also tracing Woke Patient Zero back to the Occupy Wallstreet wet market, and Mike Lindell is censored on his own network! Kowalski from Nebraska gives his agriculture updates, plus, your calls and IMs!

Sam and Emma host Alex de Waal, Executive Director of The World Peace Foundation and Professor at Tufts University, to discuss the ongoing civil conflict in Ethiopia and how it is affecting the Tigrayan people. First, Sam and Emma run through updates on the US funding bill, GOP killing cannabis reform, the final DOJ criminal referrals coming out of the 1/6 committee, the USPS’ shift towards electric, and more on George Santos’ resume, before diving deeper into the January 6th committee, and the US’ long history of refusing to hold powerful white men to account. Alex de Waal then calls in as he gets right into walking through the long history of war in Ethiopia, beginning with tensions between the authoritarian leadership of Ethiopia (supported by the West) and the totalitarian regime of Eritrea, and the decades of war that came from it, culminating with the election of Abiy Ahmed as Prime Minister of Ethiopia, a shift away from the Tigrayan party leadership of the last few decades, who pushed for a security pact with Isaias Afwerki’s Eritrea. Parsing through this shift, Alex, Sam, and Emma tackle the progression of regional supremacy from the era of Haile Selassie’s Amhara leadership, through the Tigrayan decades, and into the recent turn against Tigray, as Ahmed and Afwerki used their pact to stamp out the Tigrayan political party that had dominated Ethiopian politics for the last few decades. After tackling the nature of this conflict as a battle for greater global/continental supremacy, de Waal walks through the differing perspectives on Tigray between Ahmed (who is largely taking a political opportunity) and Afwerki (who is seen to hold genocidal intentions), and how this resulted – despite strong defense from Tigrayan forces at first – in an attempt to starve out the Tigrayan people. After running through the massive devastation that came out of this genocidal endeavor between Ethiopia and Eritrea, Alex, Sam, and Emma explore how they got the rest of the African Union, and the world writ large, to look the other way, before wrapping up by tackling the recent treaties signed that put a stop to hostilities in Tigray, and why conflict in the country is not coming to a close despite them.

And in the Fun Half: Sam and Emma parse through the various holes in Congressman-Elect George Santos’s resume, and expand the conversation on the US’ refusal to hold their political leaders accountable. They also tackle the simmering beef between Lauren Boebert and Majorie Taylor Greene, dive into Greg Gutfeld having fun with the concept of child abuse, and discuss the failure of local news outlets to cover George Santos’ lies, plus, your calls and IMs!

Sam is back! Him and Emma speak with Nancy Fraser, professor of Political and Social Science at The New School for Social Research, to discuss her recent book Cannibal Capitalism: How Our System Is Devouring Democracy, Care, and the Planet-and What We Can Do About It. Emma and Sam first run through updates on Elon polling his own demise, the continued failures of the New York Democratic Party, referrals from the 1/6 committee, and the complete lack of excitement for either likely nominee in 2024. Nancy Fraser then joins as she parses through the multi-layered general crisis of capitalism that we find ourselves in the midst of today, the deeply irrational nature of capitalism as a social structure, and why a critique of capitalism must extend beyond a solely economic lens. Thus, expanding on a solely Marxist critique of capitalism, Professor Fraser walks through her work on a larger view of capitalism and its crises, first tackling the economic crisis of work and the disappearance of decent paying labor, before also touching on the crisis of care, and the ongoing environmental crisis, all stemming from capitalism’s constant undermining of any regulatory capacities. After walking through the evolution of capitalism from its mercantile inception, through the industrial and fossil fuel revolution, to the downfall of New Deal Capitalism as the West turned to Neoliberalism, Emma, Sam, and Nancy explore the COVID-19 Pandemic as an intersection of the various strands of crises within capitalism, and what we can learn about tracing our society’s myriad failures back to the social structure of capitalism. Wrapping up, Professor Fraser dives into the importance of expanding the anti-capitalist front, exploring what we can learn from the far-left and far-right brands of populism that have come about, and what the role of theory is in this project against capitalism.

And in the Fun Half: Sam parses through his new identity find through cruising, and he and Emma tackle the highlights from this weekend’s Turning Point USA conference, as Kari Lake brings back that whole “deplorables” thing, and Josh Hawley begs his audience to stop jerking off. Cameron from Indianapolis discusses a history of regional public transportation, Mark from LA tells of his harrowing experiences with Jazz Daredevil Whisky Highball, and Richard from Western PA discusses the disrespect for non-romantic partnerships in the debate on the Respect for Marriage act. They also tackle Elon trying to reconcile his desire to be loved with being a tremendous ass who makes the world a worse place, and talk Senate reform with Jay from NC, plus, your calls and IMs!

It's Casual Friday! Emma hosts Ryan Grim, DC Bureau Chief at The Intercept, to discuss the Intercept's coverage of the White House pressuring Sen. Bernie Sanders to not introduce a war powers resolution on the conflict in Yemen. Then, Emma's joined by Lance of The Serfs TV to discuss their recent publication of old Matt Walsh clips, as well as the "Twitter Files." And, Emma is joined again by MR's own Matt Binder to discuss his recent unceremonious Twitter ban at the hands of Elon Musk! First, Emma runs through updates on Congress’ spending bill, another 45-billion dollar increase to the Military budget, and Starbucks Workers United launching their biggest labor action yet. Ryan Grim then joins as he and Emma dive right into the recent drama behind Senator Bernie Sanders’ war powers resolution, tackling why he delayed introducing it with the recent focus on labor issues, the impetus behind launching this effort after the vague success of his war powers resolution under Trump, and how he learned of Biden’s White House campaigning against him. Next, Ryan dives into what the vetoed war powers resolution under Trump actually accomplished, walking through its restriction of over 90% of US support for the war in Yemen, and the recent ceasefire in the region starting in October. Expanding on this, Grim and Emma explore why the White House saw this war powers resolution as a threat to their preferred relationship with Saudi Arabia, seeing the final ~10% of support surrounding the US’ aid of maintaining infrastructure as necessary to keep Saudi oil fields functioning, before wrapping up the subject by parsing through the history of MBS’ war in Yemen and exploring the role it plays in relation to Russia’ current invasion of Ukraine. They conclude the interview by diving into the PRESS Act that is being introduced to Congress, the conservative pushback from folks like Tom Cotton, and why it’s going to be difficult for them to frame this issue negatively. Lance from the Serfs TV then joins as he talks #FreeBinder, walks through yesterday’s ElonJet fiasco on Twitter, and explores Elon’s authoritarian action drawing critique even from the least respectable of the Free-Speech™ journalism crew, before tackling Lance’s research into Matt Walsh’s history of being a small-scale theocratic creep. Finally, friend of the show Matt Binder joins as he walks through his perspective on Twitter’s crackdown on any Musk-related journalism, the absurdity of banning people on a policy that doesn’t exist yet, and the ridiculous nature of Elon unilaterally employing the exact tactics he was critiquing in his “Twitter Files.”

And in the Fun Half: Emma and the MR Crew discuss ESVN talking points, the debate on Puerto Rican statehood, and watch Obama-era Crowder do his best Bigoted Philip DeFranco impression. The Five rants about the elitist fashion foibles of… John Fetterman? Plus, your IMs!

In a pre-taped conversation, Sam's joined by Eric Alterman, Professor of English and Journalism at Brooklyn College, writer of the "Altercation" newsletter at The American Prospect, to discuss his recent book We Are Not One: A History of America's Fight Over Israel. Then, Emma speaks with Javier Puente, Associate Professor of Latin American and Latino/a Studies at Smith College, to discuss the recent civil unrest in Peru after former President Pedro Castillo threatened to dissolve the country's legislature and rule by decree before being removed from office.  First, Emma runs through updates on the Fed’s newest interest rate hike, the House pouring more money into American policing, the return of free by-mail covid tests, Pulse Nightclub survivor Brandon Wolf’s statements on Florida’s transphobia, and the continued response to the Respect for Marriage Act. Then Sam and Eric Alterman join to tackle the history of American Jews and Zionism, first jumping back to the start of the 20th Century and the desire of the American Jewery to build America into their homeland, before shifting to the campaigning of Louis Brandeis in the 1920s for American Jews to push for the rights of their European brethren to colonize Palestine and return to Israel. Next, Professor Alterman and Sam tackle the mass shift in the American Jewish perspective on Zionism in the wake of the revelations of the Holocaust, particularly as it came after an era where the US (and its German-Jewish citizens) pushed against the immigration of Eastern European Jews. Moving to the wake of the Holocaust, Sam, and Eric explore the evacuation of the British from Israel leaving a colonial vacuum, and why the US saw it as an opportunity to build their power in the region, even with some conservative pushback from US politicians, before tackling the impact of the Six-Day War in bolstering the support for Israel among US Jews. They wrap up the interview by tackling the growing stratification between an increasingly conservative Israeli youth movement, and a more and more liberal American Jewish constituency, and where the future of Israel lies in US politics. Then Emma is joined by Javier Puente as attempts to contextualize the last week in Peruvian politics for us, from Pedro Castillo’s coup attempt on the 7th to Dina Boluarte replacing him through similarly undemocratic means, before tackling why the hell he attempted the coup in the first place, and where the motivations of the protesters largely stand, feeling both betrayed by Castillo and wanting to push against a return for a far-right Peru.

And in the Fun Half: Emma is joined by Brandon Sutton and Matt Binder as they explore Donald Trump’s late arrival to the NFT game (and even later to the trading card one), discuss the Washington Posts’ failed employee town hall, and take on Elon taking stock of his tanking stocks. They also dive into the continued fallout from Sam Bankman-Fried’s fall from grace and FTX’s massive collapse, plus, your calls and IMs!

Emma hosts Jamie McCallum, associate professor of sociology at Middlebury College, to discuss his recent book Essential: How the Pandemic Transformed the Long Fight for Worker Justice. Then, Emma is joined by Gerrit Bruhaug, Ph.D candidate at the University of Rochester and research assistant for the Laboratory of Laser Energetics, to discuss the recent groundbreaking development in fusion energy that could pose a threat to fossil fuel production. First, Emma runs through updates on the passage of the Respect for Marriage Act, a new Fed interest rate hike, Tesla’s falling share prices, the Iranian protests, and Kate Brown’s final acts in office, before diving into Biden pushing Bernie into lockstep in embracing the Saudi proxy war in Yemen. Jamie McCallum then joins as he gets right into reflecting on the beginning of the COVID-19 Pandemic and the designation of our “essential workers” as such, granting those most necessary to our society (which also included Walmart’s greeters) a round of applause and little to no material support, while towns, cities, and states campaigned for special designation to keep the money flowing in. Next, he and Emma tackle this “hero” status, and how it contrasted with the actual heroic action that essential workers took, particularly in terms of disruptive tactics that actually attempted to center health and safety issues, inverting capitalism’s shock doctrine and using a public crisis to force progress in labor rights. Diving deeper into the pandemic’s early labor wave, Emma and Professor McCallum explore the non-unionized nature of much of the labor action in 2020, with workers genuinely taking their (and their community’s) well-being into their own hands, bolstered by rising community action over the court of 2020’s protests around the murder of George Floyd. After tackling the importance of these two movements finding solidarity with each other, they wrap up the interview with a conversation on the massive role unions had in keeping their workplaces and communities safe during COVID, and what else we can learn about labor from the workforce’s reaction to the pandemic. Gerrit Bruhaug then joins as he gets right into parsing through the nuclear fusion-based progress that was made in the US this week, discussing the important shift from fission to fusion, the purpose of this multi-decade project, and the future of this push for renewable energy (and the private challenges it may face).

And in the Fun Half: Emma and the MR Crew tackle Ron DeSantis’ new anti-CDC panel, Rai from Phoenix discusses Arizona’s bi(partisan)-phobia for Kyrsten Sinema, and Ben Shapiro discusses the anti-woke nature of software engineering. Charlie Kirk goes to bat for crypto in December of the year 2022, Matt Walsh touts the Bible’s mediocre sequel, and Mindy calls in to explore the fall of Italian-American comic Sebastian Maniscalco, plus, your calls and IMs!

Emma speaks with Andy Campbell, senior editor and reporter at the Huffington Post, to discuss his recent book We Are Proud Boys: How a Right-Wing Street Gang Ushered in a New Era of American Extremism. First, Emma runs through updates on inflation, Boebert’s recount victory, another IDF murder of a young Palestinian girl, Peru’s political protests, and Elon dissolving the Twitter Trust and Safety Council, before parsing through a recent Talking Points Memo leak of January 6th texts featuring all of the day’s main characters. Andy Campbell then joins as he dives right into the current moment of the Proud Boys’ political movement, as their leader Enrique Tarrio and others face a Seditious Conspiracy charge for January 6th, with numerous high-level members already pleading guilty and notifying their willingness to testify against their brothers. He also touches on how the group is grappling with the indictment, with founder Gavin McInnes returning to the forefront, before stepping back to examine the story of how McInnes’ middle-aged misogynists’ militia came to be, with McInnes getting pushed out of Vice Media by his cofounders in 2008 due to blatant bigotry, and resigning himself to a solo talk show where he could center himself and his reactionary views. Continuing with this story, Campbell walks through the role of Donald Trump’s 2016 candidacy in lighting a spark in McInnes, particularly as his community of like-minded men continued to grow, shifting his program from a simple talk show to a call-to-action for mediocre incels, pushing his audience to physically fight for Trump’s politics, to the point where violence or arrest remained a base requirement for leadership in his Proud Boys. Finishing up the history portion, Campbell and Emma walk through the continued evolution of the Proud Boys over the ladder half of Trump’s presidency, and its culmination on January 6th, before they shift to a broader discussion of the values the Proud Boys bring to the table, including their view of themselves as a hyper-masculine militaristic brotherhood, before parsing more specifically through how they tackle ingraining themselves in the US political system, winning low-level GOP candidacies and actual seats in government to help legitimize their efforts, while claiming “irony” any time their violence is confronted. Wrapping up, they discuss the future of far-right extremism and aggrievement in politics, and why they’re not likely to go away.

And in the Fun Half: Emma and the MR crew discuss what Taibbi’s recent work can teach us about other Billionaire playthings like Glenn Greenwald, and parse through his claim that being a bigot is actually all the rage with kids these days. They also walk through Judge Janine Pirro’s recent endorsement of Kyrsten Sinema, and wrap up with Candace Owens’ discrimination incrimination, plus, your calls and IMs!

Emma hosts Timothy Shenk, Co-Editor of Dissent and Assistant Professor of Modern U.S. History at George Washington University, to discuss his recent book Realigners: Partisan Hacks, Political Visionaries, and the Struggle to Rule American Democracy. First, Emma runs through updates on Sinema jumping right back into working with the Right, Kari Lake’s lawsuit against Arizona, and polls revealing that the only thing the public wants less than a Trump candidacy, is a Biden one, before diving deeper into this weekend’s Keystone Pipeline spill, and the complete joke that is letting corporations regulate themselves. Timothy Shenk then joins as he dives right into the inspiration he found in the failure of the US political system leading up to the election of Donald Trump, with the inability of either party to build a durable majority following the collapse of the New Deal Coalition in 1968. Next, Shenk jumps back to the 18th Century as he begins the walk through the major political realignment that set up this coalition-stifling system, first parsing through the aristocratic civil war between Federalists and Jeffersonians in the 1790s that set up the two-party system that centered the ability to sway the electorate (rather than the belief in an aristocracy naturally rising to the top), before moving forwards through the 1800s and Andrew Jackson’s rallying of a populist coalition of his Jacksonian Democrats to bolster this political party machine. Next, Timothy and Emma explore the shift away from the Jacksonian Democrats as Martin Van Buren and the “Radical Republicans” began to take on the institution of slavery, and walk through the impact of changing party politics in the leadup to the Civil War, before shifting to the third realignment under Lincoln and beyond, as reconstruction’s vision of a multiracial democracy began to fall apart. They then discuss the rise of FDR’s New Deal Coalition in the 20th Century, as the Great Depression forced Americans to get over their lingering resentment from the Civil War, and for the first time centered class as the major political divide in the US, before they wrap up the interview by walking through the Right’s various coalition attempts (largely shrouded in a populist veneer) from Phyllis Schlafly to Donald Trump and tackling the failure of Democrats to ever see a return of FDR’s labor coalition.

And in the Fun Half: Emma and the crew bask in the jeers Elon Musk received at Dave Chapelle’s recent SF show, despite Dave’s best efforts, Jesse James from the Hudson Valley dives into reactionaries and pop-culture race swaps, and Sunil from San Jose discusses various elements of Democrats' campaigning strategies. They also tackle Christian Walker refusing to back down to the weirdos on the Right that blame him for his father’s loss, Zack from Missouri discusses the role of religion in various elements of our politics, and Serena from Tucson walks through serious tenants' rights issues going on in her complex, plus, your calls and IMs!

Jon Benjamin to discuss his new Jazz Daredevil Whisky Highball! First, Sam runs through updates on the Respect for Marriage Act, Alito’s role in Supreme Court leaks, and more, before parsing through Sinema’s incredibly unsurprising choice to leave the Democratic party. Osita Nwanevu then joins as he dives right into analyzing whether there will be a material impact on Sinema going independent, before diving into lingering stories from the midterms, including Maricopa county, grappling with a Warnock win alongside an Abrams loss, Trump’s role in the GOP’s losses, and why the Right really should blame their obsession with culture wars. Next, they walk through whether the Right will see a shift back towards an anti-immigrant culture war, what the Democrats (with a majority in the Senate) can do about immigration policy, and why the American public became more liberal on the topic throughout the Trump presidency. Wrapping up, Osita and Sam tackle the state of the Democratic electorate, parse through the future of the Democratic party under their new leadership, and explore why DeSantis isn’t much of an actual departure from what the public dislikes about Trump. Then Sam is joined by alleged comedian and actor H. Jon Benjamin to discuss his educational background and new canned concoction the Jazz Daredevil Whisky Highball!

And in the Fun Half: Sam dives deep into the recent hearing around the 2014 Hobby Lobby leak, parsing through the astonishing news that the various influential far-right political lobbying institutions do indeed influence far-right Supreme Court justices, and whether there will be any repercussions for the multiple Justices involved behind the scenes. He and the crew also tackle Bari Weiss’ Twitter Files pt. 2 as she and the rest of the online right forgo reading comprehension in favor of their reactionary impulses, and discuss Rep. Emma hosts Emily Flitter, finance reporter for the New York Times, to discuss her recent book The White Wall: How Big Finance Bankrupts Black America. First, Emma discusses this morning's news of President Biden announcing that WNBA star Brittney Griner has been released from Russian custody. Then, Emily joins and speaks about the current NYTimes Guild walk outs and what this means for the Times workers fight for better pay and better benefits. Afterwards Emily and Emma dive into her book, starting off with a general primer on the enormous racial wealth gap in the U.S., and how that wealth gap has persisted and even widened over the past 50+ years. She then touches on how banks have attempted to use a narrative of "racial progress" to buttress their social justice bona fides, without acknowledging the massive financial inequities that exist for Black Americans, and especially without acknowledging some significant banks like Citi's direct roots in slavery. Emily then speaks to the large amount of emails between bank tellers of numerous bank branches and how they showed a disproportionate emphasis on scrutinizing black patrons attempting to cash checks. They then turn to algorithms, how banks use them, and how they are utilized to continue to perpetuate the myth that algorithms are race blind and race conscious because they lack the same human error that produces racism, a claim that is blatantly false (algorithms aren't omniscient and don't appear in the world fully formed.) Emily ends the conversation by touching on her reporting on cryptocurrency, specifically FTX and Sam Bankman-Fried's attempts to assist with cities' guaranteed income programs in order to curry favor with Washington politicians, attempting to give impoverished people crypto, being told that poor people shouldn't be given an enormously speculative and unstable asset, agreeing to give them cash, then shuttering before handing over a single cent. Afterwards, Emma discusses further the passage of the Respect For Marriage Act, and Republicans insane reaction to its enshrinement into law.

And, in the fun half, Emma is joined by Matt Binder and Brandon Sutton, where they break down the "next entries" in the so-called "Twitter Files", Jack Dorsey's skepticism of Elon Musk, and Candace Owens claiming she doesn't believe in conspiracy theories, that the term "conspiracy theory" were created by the CIA, then begins to spout the conspiracy theories she believes in. Dave Rubin excitedly announces he tested positive for COVID, Dennis Prager's latest therapy session (his show) involves him thinking good male relationships involve being mean to each other, leading him to believe trans people can't truly become men, + your calls & IM's!

Sam and Emma host Nahid Siamdoust, Assistant Professor of Middle East and Media Studies at the University of Texas at Austin, to discuss the recent political protests in Iran. Then, they are joined by Eli Friedman, professor at the Cornell University School of Industrial and Labor Relations and author of author of The China Question: Toward Left Perspectives, edited with Kevin Lin and Ashley Smith, to discuss the recent protests in China. First, Sam and Emma run through updates on yesterday’s Georgia Primary, Trump Inc.’s fraud charges, today’s Supreme Court case, and more! Then Professor Nahid Siamdoust joins as she dives right into the current strike in Iran, exploring where we are in its broader course, before jumping back to the leadup to the Iranian revolution to explore the role of students – and the trust the Iranian populace has in them – in the country’s culture of revolution. Expanding on this, Prof. Siamdoust walks through the widespread nature of the current protests in Iran, extending well beyond the university to women throughout the nation, and across the massive ethnic patchwork from Kurdistan to Turks and beyond. Next, they jump to the murder of Mahsa Amini by the Iranian morality police, exploring the rising tension between the theocratic regime and its diverse array of citizens, before jumping back to trace the inception of the Morality Police from the wake of the Iranian revolution. Wrapping up, they discuss the remaining social group that has yet to be fully won over by the protestors (the military and police) and what that fight currently looks like. Eli Friedman then joins as he gets right into contextualizing the last couple of weeks in China, and the protest that has risen from their “Zero Covid” policy, tackling the development of the Chinese public opinion for these policies, and the country’s relationship to covid writ large. Next, they tackle China’s history with mass protest movements, outlining the vast differences between these protests and the pro-democracy movement in 1989, and walking through the various current tensions in China’s relationship with Democracy and the West.

And in the Fun Half: Sam and Emma discuss their criticism of CNN’s one-sided rail labor coverage, parse through Warnock’s victory in Georgia and the right’s internal civil war coming to the fore as Herschel’s relationships to Cruz, Graham, and Trump fail to take him to the Senate. Tucker Carlson reminds people that trans folks aren’t their only threat – brown immigrants exist too! Madeline King talks anti-communism, Ben Shapiro discusses the First Amendment right of being a Theocrat that cracks down on First Amendment rights, and Vince from Virginia dives into the lingering issues around the midterms and Supreme Court, plus, your calls and IMs!

Sam and Emma host Mark Joseph Stern, senior writer at Slate, to discuss the recent opening arguments that have come in front of the Supreme Court. First, they run through updates on today’s Georgia runoff, Ukraine’s offensive in Russia, another Fed interest hike, the continuing railway labor fight, and more, before diving into Kevin McCarthy exercising his beautifully weak leadership with Laura Ingraham. Mark Joseph Stern then joins as he dives right into 303 Creative v. Elenis, aka Gay Wedding Cake 2.0, exploring how Alliance Defending Freedom back Lorie Smith and 303’s fight to refuse even the possibility of making a website for a same-sex wedding, changing the entire spin of her business to center her argument that allowing the use of one of her templates (not even a personalized website) is the same as a personal endorsement of the marriage. He also dives into the recent debates on the Supreme Court floor, as Alito embarrasses himself attempting to draw a parallel between being queer and being a KKK member. Next, Mark, Sam, and Emma dive into the upcoming Moore v. Harper North Carolina gerrymandering case, outlining who the actors are, how it centers on the radical “Independent State Legislature” theory, and why the GOP is even pretending to think that a state legislature can fully ignore its constitution, courts, and governor when assessing a fair election, before wrapping up with the heartwarming note of why our democracy might come down to a single vote by Amy Coney-Barrett.

And in the Fun Half: Sam and Emma talk with John from San Antonio as he previews today’s Georgia Runoff and reflects on the Democrats’ shortcomings in the Midterms, also tackling Matt Yglesias becoming the millionth person to ask the same “just asking questions” question about trans healthcare, and talking with Marcus on military vaccinations. Hutt from Manhattan parses through the Squad largely voting against freight rail labor, Sean Row from Chicago discusses the platforming of the right, and Candace Owens responds to the Daily Wire infighting. They also briefly discuss Elon trying to keep up the spark from the Twitter files, plus, your calls and IMs!

Sam and Emma host Adam Hochschild, lecturer at the University of California, Berkeley School of Journalism, to discuss his recent book American Midnight: The Great War, a Violent Peace, and Democracy's Forgotten Crisis. First, Sam and Emma run through this weekend’s updates on the Georgia runoff, the North Carolina power station sabotage, this week’s Supreme Court cases, and more, before watching Pete Buttigieg put his McKinsey training to use in his platitude-laden defense of putting down the freight rail workers. Adam Hochschild then joins as he dives right into the decade leading up to his World War I era of “American Midnight,” parsing through the various arenas of violence that were simmering at the start of the 20th Century, with mass suppression of labor struggles, immigrant movements, and Black communities all boiling over with the start of the War. Next, Hochschild focuses on Woodrow Wilson’s presidency, highlighted by a crackdown on civil liberties alongside an expansion of the federal presence both domestically and internationally, using the War as an opportunity to establish the US as a military power, before parsing more carefully through the role of the Espionage and later Sedition Acts, and the Wilson administration’s attack on public dissidents. Continuing post-war, Adam, Emma, and Sam walk through how the treatment of the Espionage Act evolved, including Oliver Wendell Holmes Jr’s eventual Supreme Court dissent and the reaction to the over 1000 arrests under these laws and their local counterparts, also exploring the impact of this suppression on the socialist and labor movements in the US, before diving into the story of Mitchell Palmer’s anti-immigrant crusade to help bolster a run for the presidency and how he was thwarted. Wrapping up, Hochschild tackles the role of prohibition in the American Midnight, and explores the impact this period had on the American political pendulum moving forwards.

And in the Fun Half: Sam and Emma discuss Biden’s shallow attempt to frame his undermining of the freight rail workers as inevitable, Herschel Walker’s inscrutability, and Jimmy Dore’s argument on why having David Duke is a good presence in discourse, actually. They also parse through Matt Taibbi’s incredible reveal that Hunter Biden has a penis and PR teams exist (incidentally, also employed by the Right), Donald Trump talks about suspending the constitution while Republicans stay in line behind him, plus, your calls and IMs!

It's Casual Friday! Sam and Emma host Ryan Grim, DC Bureau Chief at the Intercept, to round up the week in news, including discussions on the freight rail labor contract, the progressives’ role in the debate (and the Democratic party writ large), and Biden’s changes to the election cycle – but first, Emma and Sam run through updates on the Fed still losing the fight to booming labor numbers, the Georgia runoff, Boebert’s recount, and the end of free speech on Twitter, before diving into CNN’s recent coverage of the freight railers’ bargaining process. Ryan Grim then joins as he dives right into walking backward through the freight railers’ contract bargaining process, first exploring the corporation-enforced lockout and the companies’ attempt to impose a new contract on their workers, before jumping back to the story of the last few years with these companies cutting a third of the workforce, shifting towards streamlined, just-in-time processes (and really long trains), and creating such a brittle and non-redundant system that they feared would fall apart with a single sick day. Next, Ryan jumps into the leadup to Biden’s role in forcing this contract on the freight railers, following a narrow rejection of a previous version, and how he planned this maneuver around the midterms. Emma, Sam, and Ryan also tackle the progressives’ role in the vote, exploring what about voting to force a contract on workers could be progressive, why a split bill may not have actually hindered the fight very much, and why the Democrats refused to push the GOP into a touch position, before wrapping up with a discussion on Biden’s decision to shift around the primary schedule and the impact it could have.

And in the Fun Half: Sam and Emma break down the court ruling that made Amazon managers in Staten Island read out a court decision to their employees telling them they can't union bust, as well as the state of the Georgia runoffs now that the Georgia Lieutenant Governor refused to vote for Herschel Walker. Then they dive into the Kanye West-Info Wars fiasco, and the right wing's cringe-defensive crouch response. Plus, your calls and IM's!

Emma hosts, Beatrice Adler-Bolton, co-host of the Death Panel podcast, to discuss her recent book Health Communism, co-authored with Artie Vierkant. First, Emma runs through updates on the US defense budget, the freight rail contract vote heading to the Senate, DC announcing a shift to free bus transport, South Africa facing its first presidential impeachment, and why progressives would ever force a contract on workers, before diving deeper into the far right’s unsurprising push against freight railers. Then Beatrice Adler-Bolton joins as she dives right into using the recent bargaining between freight railers and the regional monopolies they work for to paint a picture of how health and healthcare are used in the US – with even the existence of sick days being employed as a benefit or commodity, forcing workers’ health to fit in with the needs and desires of corporations and the private insurance agencies they work with. Zooming out, Emma and Beatrice then tackle the importance of understanding the value of health finance reform, while understanding that a much larger change is necessary to truly detach health from its hyper-individualized and commodified treatment under capitalism, with policies like Medicare for All certainly providing material benefits, but not actually changing how we relate to central resources like space and education. Next, Adler-Bolton dives into why health and health care are capitalism’s main vulnerability, particularly in its refusal to acknowledge and address greater systemic issues that affect us as a society rather than individuals, and its insistence on manufacturing scarcity, two qualities that don’t mix well with public health, exploring how even in the societies we recognize for their socialized healthcare (Scandinavia, England, etc), their commitment to capitalism actively undermines the power of this care. Wrapping up the interview, they explore the necessity of solidarity and an intersectional perspective in actually addressing public health issues beyond an isolated individual.

And in the Fun Half: Emma is joined by Brandon Sutton and Matt Binder as they dive into Binder’s recent crusade against the right-wing “Okay Groomer” brigade that somehow keeps being connected to groomers themselves, Sam Bankman-Fried’s recent (accidental) reveal that he’s one of the biggest GOP donors in secret, and Alex Jones’ meeting with Kanye and Nick Fuentes. Nick from Pittsburgh dives into SpaceX and the privatization of the final frontier, Tucker Carlson sees black people thinking about hockey as anti-white, and Marty from Houston explores trans allyship. These Long Wars from Pakistan discusses the impact of MR’s news coverage on the international level, Charlie Kirk discusses why everyday Americans need to buy Twitter, plus, your calls and IMs!
