The Majority Report with Sam Seder
Sam and Emma host ProPublica journalist Alec MacGillis and author of “Fulfillment:Winning and Losing in One-Click America” to discuss how Jeff Bezos has used America’s infrastructure to make Amazon the most dominant monopoly in the US. Alec explains how Amazon has been a driving force of regional inequality and has stunted prosperity and business activity around the country, including in the cities where it resides. Starting with Amazon’s founding in Seattle, Alec talks about the conglomerating effect of tech companies and Amazon’s ability to strategically avoid paying taxes through setting up warehouses in states with a smaller sales tax and moving profits offshore. Through the interview, Alec explores the question as to whether this is an issue specifically with Amazon’s unethical company practices or if this is indicative of a fundamental flaw in our capital structure that awards massive trusts. With the majority of Democrats believing that Amazon is the most trustworthy institution in America, what can be done to reverse the domination of these tech monopolies?

And in the Fun Half: Medhi Hassan calls out the Biden administration for funding COBRA instead of the more cost efficient option, Medicare for All, Mike Lindell uses the word “suckabuck,” the hat caller is back, minimum wage jobs at Friendly’s, Meghan McCain is impressively unimpressive, plus your calls and IMs!

Sam and Emma host Jemima Pierre, professor of African American Studies at UCLA, to unpack the long history of Haiti, the first free black republic established in 1804, and successive years of occupation and exploitation by France and the US. Then, Jemima discusses how this history has led to the current political situation in Haiti where the Organization of American States (OAS) and the UN have essentially propped up dictators, such as current leader Jovenel Moïse, against the will of the Hatain people. After, Brian Concannon, director of Project Blueprint and advisor at IJDH, joins to further explain the U.S.’, along with France and Canada’s, economic and geopolitical interest in thwarting Haitian democracy. Brain describes steps that the Biden administration and the House of Foreign Affairs Committee should take to end their support of Jovenel Moïse’s government and restore Haitain sovereignty.

And in the Fun Half: Nomiki Konst tunes in, are Sam and Emma giants in a China shop?, Trump thinks Biden is destroying our country with “woke,” DHS Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas resigns….oh wait, he didn’t, the humanitarian crisis and the militarization at the Southern border, Evanston, Illinois approves the first plan to allocate reparations to black households, elitist bicycle lanes are going to take over the roads, plus your calls and IMs!

Sam and Emma host Heather "Digby" Parton (@digby56) of Salon.con and Hullabaloo to discuss the Senate's efforts to pass Biden's $1.9T Covid relief bill, Cuomo's fall from grace, and other top stories of the week. And Andy Kindler (@AndyKindler) joins us in the fun half.

On today's show: Sen. Ron Johnson delays Covid relief bill with bizarre visual metaphor, making clerks read bill out loud.

Sam and Emma host Heather "Digby" Parton (@digby56) of Salon.con and Hullabaloo to discuss the Senate's efforts to pass Biden's $1.9T Covid relief bill, Cuomo's fall from grace, and the Voting Rights Act. Strengths and weaknesses of Biden's stimulus vs Trump's. How much time do Dems have to improve on voting rights before the door shuts on them forever?

Comedian Andy Kindler (@AndyKindler) joins the program to discuss the weird news of the day, including the revelation that their colleague Jimmy Pesto was among the group of MAGAs that stormed the capitol.

On the fun half: Bernie calls out parliamentarian, says it's ridiculous that an unelected staffer makes decision about $15/hr. Sam and Emma give opinions on Bernie's strategy. Kyrsten Sinema does a sassy dip as she votes against $15 minimum wage. Mitch McConnell says $1.9T relief bill is unnecessary because economy is already bouncing back due to GOP efforts under Trump. Glenn Greenwald claims that Trump, Bannon, and Tucker Carlson are socialists. Sam, Emma, and Jonathan begin their conversation discussing the failures of the Clinton healthcare bill from the first Clinton administration and what was learned from its failures. The interview concludes with Cohn giving his assessment on

Sam and Emma host MIT professor Justin Reich (@bjfr) on his latest book Failure to Disrupt: Why Technology Alone Can’t Transform Education on remote learning's failures during the Covid crisis and how we can improve schooling in the event of future pandemics.

On today's show: Biden gives bid of support to Alabama workers and their right to unionize.

Sam and Emma host MIT professor Justin Reich (@bjfr) on his latest book Failure to Disrupt: Why Technology Alone Can’t Transform Education on remote learning's failures during the Covid crisis and how we can improve schooling in the event of future pandemics. While Silicon Valley has promised great advancements in education through trendy new technology, it hasn't exactly panned out that way. Examining things like proctoring software (which functions like spyware), auto-grading, and MOOCs (Massive Online Open Courses), Reich shows how tech alone cannot mitigate inequality or revolutionize education.

On the fun half: Jen Psaki says Cuomo accusers deserve to be treated with respect and dignity, supports independent investigation. Asked about Biden administration decision to not sanction MBS personally and general accountability, Jen Psaki says US will hold Saudi Arabia accountable, suggests US doesn't sanction heads of state personally. Trump hints that he might run again, beating Democrats a "third time" (crowd goes wild). Fox and Friends pumped that Trump is back, Kilmeade says Trump looks thinner, he wants to unite the GOP. Right wing figure espouses Qanon beliefs during CPAC panel, talks about being canceled for addressing Q, child trafficking and finding out what's really going on. Reporter asks if WH is pushing harder for Neera Tanden than $15 minimum wage. Asked about horrible death rates in South Dakota, Kristi Noem says press should ask same question to other governors. Singer botches National Anthem at CPAC. Young girl sells lemonade to pay for her brain surgery in "heartwarming" local news story. Plus, your IMs.

Sam and Emma take a look at some of the most important stories of the week including the parliamentarian's ruling on a $15 minimum wage, fixing the USPS, and more.

On today's show: Chris Hayes asks Bernie Sanders if Senate has votes for $15 minimum wage on up/down vote, Bernie laughs "no." John Thune recounts making a wage in the '70s, says it's too much to raise wages to $15/hr, even though his wages in '70s (adjusted for inflation) were higher than $15/hr. Ro Khanna explains why passing $15 minimum wage is not conditioned on parliamentarian ruling, "Be honest with folks." Roger Marshall (R-KS) says he had a low wage job in HS and college and it helped him graduate debt free. DeJoy says he’s sticking around at post office til his work is done. After Jim Jordan says Democrats are hypocrites and Post Office is besieged by partisanship, Gerry Connolly explains how USPS was hamstrung by GOP appointments and political efforts. Former aide speaks out about how Cuomo sexually harassed her.

On the fun half: Asked if Trump should speak at CPAC, the GOP leadership is divided. Reopened Miami detention center for children is the same one where Kamala had her manufactured meme moment. One year ago today: Larry Kudlow claims "we have contained" the corona virus. Rep. Marie Newman (IL-03) gives floor speech on importance of passing the Equality Act. Marjorie Taylor Greene posts sign outside door saying there's only two genders. Plus, your calls and IMs!

Sam hosts Ari Berman, senior reporter at Mother Jones, to discuss the deluge of statehouse legislation aiming to curb voting rights for the next election cycle. Sam and Ari examine how states have tried to restrict voting rights after the 2013 Supreme Court decision which no longer required southern states to receive federal approval before changing their voting laws. Sam and Ari then explore how voting laws may change in the midterm cycle and the next presidential election. Ari warns against the restrictive voting rights and how it could very well come back to hurt the GOP turnout, not just the Democrats. Sam and Ari go state-by-state on how battleground state legislatures are trying to restrict voting rights from gerrymandering to court elections.

Sam and Emma host Maurice Chammah, staff writer at The Marshall Project, and author of Let the Lord Sort Them: The Rise and Fall of the Death Penalty joins the show to discuss his new book and how America might move beyond its shameful history of capital punishment. Sam and Chammah explore how the death penalty took hold through American culture, particularly Texas, and its relationship to reconstruction and lynchings in the south. Chammah continues to describe the mythology of Texas, frontier justice, and how it impacted the continuation of the death penalty. The two continue their conversation considering how state governments made capital punishment operational from the 1970s onward, and how Bill Clinton used it to secure his political future. Sam, Emma, and Chammah conclude their conversation by examining the future of the death penalty and how a Democratic administration could work around states' efforts to uphold their capital punishment. Chammah closes the discussion by talking about changing punitive carceral reform and the incremental changes needed to provide a more humane society.

And in the Fun Half: Reaching out to Christians with left talking points, will Dems repeal GOP tax cuts, why the fever will not break for the GOP, dispatches from George Floyd Park in Minneapolis, the disturbing footage of Rochester NY cops pepper-spraying a black child in the back of their squad car, plus your calls and IMs!

On today's show: Democratic House member says GOP reps are telling him they fear for their lives if they vote to impeach Trump.

Sam hosts Adam Jentleson (@AJentleson), former advisor to Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, to discuss his new book Kill Switch: The Rise of the Modern Senate and the Crippling of American Democracy on how the filibuster negatively impacts American democracy. How John C. Calhoun and other Southern Senators pioneered the filibuster to block civil rights legislation during Reconstruction. How it persisted through the Jim Crow era and became normalized. Reforms that could change the majority required to pass legislation in the Senate back to 50%.

On the fun half: GOP House member says there's violence on both sides of the aisle. Asked about companies opposing Trump, Lauren Boebert says Democrats were the ones who normalized violence. NJ Congresswoman asserts that GOP Reps were taking civilians on recon tours through the House the day before riots took place. Doocy asks hypothetical: If it was a GOP House would they impeach a Democratic president for what Trump did, Kilmeade admits yes, but Democrats always impeach, Kilmeade then asks pro-impeachment GOP why they're against Trump now. Pompeo ignores questions from VOA reporter who was reassigned after challenging Pompeo w/ hard questions about his role in delegimitizing election results. Mike Pompeo says Al Qaeda's Abu Mohammed al-Masri was assassinated in Tehran in August and that shows Al Qaida "home base" is in Iran. Plus, your calls and IMs!

On today's best of: Sam hosts former Republican strategist and consultant Stuart Stevens (@stuartpstevens) to discuss his new book It Was All a Lie: How the Republican Party Became Donald Trump on how the GOP was always destined to become the party of Trump. While the Republican Party once stood for principles like “limited government” and “personal responsibility,” Stevens believes its worst tendencies have long since taken over and enabled the rise of Trump. Sam takes Stevens to task for some of these assumptions, prompting a lively exchange of ideas.
