The Majority Report with Sam Seder

Sam breaks down last night’s debate and what to expect moving forward as the Majority Report does its part to flatten the curve with social distancing practices and telework. Sam discusses plans to move Majority Report production to his satellite studio and shares precautions listeners should take to help prevent the spread of the virus. Before leaving the MR studio for the foreseeable future, Sam examines the Trump administration’s inaction and its 2018 decision to disband the NSC pandemic response team. On this freebie Monday, in the second half of the show, Sam recaps last night’s Democratic debate between Joe Biden and Bernie Sanders. Sam explains why Sanders should have capitalized on Biden’s decision to attack Sanders “super PACs,” none of which the former Vice President could name. And why progressives need to start asking Biden about the “new normal” why his platform of returning to Obama-era policy is no longer possible in the wake of this pandemic.

Ryan Grim of The Intercept joins the Majority Report to discuss the 2020 Democratic Primary, the latest news on Covid19, and the government's response to the growing pandemic. Sam and Grim discuss the state of the Democratic Primary in the wake of our growing public health emergency. They discuss the implications of Trump's inaction on Covid19, how Biden and Sanders should campaign against it, and why Republicans will turn on Trump if the pandemic overwhelms the US healthcare system. Sam and Ryan take a look back at Elizabeth Warren's decisions which led to the end of her campaign, and the implications of not endorsing Sanders, including what that means for her future as a figurehead for the Progressive movement. They also dive into Warren's relationship with Sanders and her feeling that Sanders is not a skilled politician; she still sees Sanders as the rabblerousing independent Senator from Vermont, not a nationally popular politician who can reshape the Democratic party. The two conclude their conversation forecasting Sunday's one-on-one Democratic debate in Washington.

And in the Fun Half: Public Health and conservative media misinformation, Sam got overexcited with a recent spam call, Jerry Falwell Jr. says Covid19 is an overhyped biological weapon from North Korea, the Bolsonaro Covid19 test interference, Seema Verma will do everything in her power to protect Medicaid block grants, Katie Porter corners the CDC Director, and Sarah Palin is on the Masked Singer, plus your calls and IMs!

Journalist Kate Aronoff (@KateAronoff) joins Michael Brooks to discuss her latest in The New Republic "Joe Biden’s Sketchy Climate Record." The two discuss Biden's votes on climate and his undeserved credit for the Paris Agreement.

On today's show: Kevin McCarthy not concerned about test kits, says private company is "on the verge" of helping.

Kate Aronoff (@KateAronoff), staff writer at The New Republic, joins us to discuss her latest piece, "Joe Biden’s Sketchy Climate Record." Joe Biden has attempted to take undeserved credit for the Paris Climate Agreement, but that's only the beginning of his spotty record. Rather than the total transformation of the economy that's needed, Biden still favors the Obama admin's "all of the above" strategy, which leans on tax credits and the private sector to develop green energy, rather than placing limits on extraction.

Michael on the weaponization of corruption against left governments.

On the fun half: Kowalski updates us on his Congressional run. What's up with the Working Families Party? Joe Biden speaks on the corona virus, offers no good plan. Comparison: What the right thinks socialism is vs. what socialism is. Jim Cramer says administration knows nothing. Trump will save us with low interest loans and tax cuts. C-SPAN camera still rolling after Trump's address. Flashback, March 10: Trump says it will go away. Donna Shalala plays "Fight Song" during committee hearing on COVID-19.

The MR team brings you the news.

On today's show: Why Warren didn't endorse anyone. What should Bernie's strategy be going forward? Bernie gives a speech, leverages the young in a way that doesn't feel like a threat.

On the fun half: Jeff from GA is not giving up the fight. Jake Tapper says 2020 feels like 2004 all over again. Donna Brazile says Biden speaks his heart, doesn't think too much, is a man of passion. Jerry the Autoworker on Fox News, they stereotype him as speaking for anyone not from coasts. Trump says consumers are okay and that he's seen all kinds of contingencies re: COVID-19. Larry Kudlow looks kind of sleepy while standing behind Pence. Dr. Anthony Fauci tells Hannity viewers COVID-19 is 10x more deadly than flu.

Daniel Bessner, Associate Professor of American Foreign Policy at the University of Washington, joins Michael Brooks to discuss his recent piece in The New Republic, "To End Forever War, End the Dollar's Global Dominance." Brooks and Bessner begin their conversation with an autopsy of Super Tuesday and an assessment of why the Biden campaign might not be as well-positioned as the media narrative leads people to believe. Bessner also looks at the way the Boomer generation voted so overwhelmingly for Biden in Tuesday's primaries and places it in the historical context of the "American Century." Brooks and Bessner consider the political realignment on the horizon where ownership of universal programs and anti-capitalist measures are up for grabs between the nativist right-wing and the progressive left. Pivoting to Bessner's recent article, the professor explains the electorate's failure to understand it's not just US military power that perpetuates US hegemony, but also the dollar's power. Bessner says anti-imperialists should make "monetary multilateralism" a core principle; it is the only way to assure nations' autonomy in the global market and the only way to prevent the US from pursuing its global projects.

And in the Fun Half: the Bernie campaign moving forward, Bernie's Obama ad, concerns for Biden in the general, Trump trolls Bloomberg, the President tells his Fox News constituency they can go to work if they have covid19, plus your calls and IMs!

Alex Sammon of the American Prospect joins Michael Brooks to discuss his piece, "Barack Obama's Legacy Is Narendra Modi." Sammon and Brooks dive into how the former president helped rehabilitate the prime minister on the global stage, which helped set the stage for Modi's current anti-Muslim agenda in India. The two explain how Modi deliberately allowed the 2002 Hindu riots in Gujarat to transpire while he was the state's Chief Minister; this made him even too toxic even for the Bush administration, which barred him from obtaining a travel visa to the US. After Modi won the Indian Prime Minister election in 2014, Barack Obama invited him to the White House to reform trade between the US and India and looked the other way to Modi's humanitarian crimes. Advisors like Steve Rattner gave cover to Obama when they made the media rounds to praise Modi's government as a model of economic and social justice. Brooks and Sammon explain the diplomatic horse-trading between Obama and Modi, where the Indian PM would open markets to US investment and Obama would ignore the Hindu nationalist's authoritarianism in India. Brooks and Sammon conclude their discussion with a broader examination of liberal foreign policy, and how it will always be subject to the interests of the business investor class.

And in the Fun Half: an update on Modi from a listener in India, Thomas Friedman wants a Democratic coup from "the grown-ups," Warren her position on superdelegates is not different from Bernie's in 2016, a Washington Post data team investigates Evo Morales election from 2019, Mike Pence called to save us from Coronavirus, Trump explains why he made cuts to CDC and HHS, plus your calls and IMs!

Happy Tuesday! We're previewing tonight's New Hampshire primary with Dave Weigel proprietor of the Trailer from the Washington Post. Looking back at the last week of electoral primary, Weigel says the most significant outcome from the Iowa app debacle was how it shifted the narrative, helping Pete Buttigieg surge in New Hampshire. Meanwhile, Weigel diagnoses what went wrong with the Biden campaign and explains how the Bloomberg 2020 campaign is changing the way billionaires can dictate a primary on the Democratic side. Sam and Weigel conclude their conversation with a discussion about how to motivate voters who low-information, low-stake voters to go to the polls in November.

And in the Fun Half: an A/B comparison of how Bernie and Buttigieg approach issues of race and criminal justice, Virgil Texas calls in to give his predictions, Jamie gives us her view from the Bernie NH canvassing operation, approaching family that is resistant to understanding how voting impacts marginalize people, Verdict w/ Ted Cruz and Michael Knowles is the new podcast on the right that all leftists fear, AOC is on fire in New Hampshire, Kasie Hunt needs a progressive producer, Chris Matthews gets fact-checked by Ro Khanna, plus your calls and IMs!

Happy Monday! Sam is back from his quick trip to New Hampshire and is joined by the executive editor at the American Prospect David Dayen to discuss his latest, "Welcome to the Bullshit Economy," which examines why our economy rewards grift over competency. Sam and Dayen take stock of the Democratic Party leadership after its chaotic week in Iowa. Dayen expounds why projects like Shadow and Acronym typify our Bullshit Economy, where self-dealing and denial of responsibility are endemic to its survival at the expense of average Americans and our most essential institutions. Sam and Dayen also look forward to tomorrow's primary in New Hampshire and how it might shape the field for the Nevada caucus and the South Carolina primary.

And in the Fun Half: Joe Biden's Dog Face Pony Soldier, Bernie Sanders' new defense against "socialist" critiques, Obama's record on the housing crisis, a ground report from Las Vegas ahead of the Nevada caucus, Pete Buttigieg McKinsey-speaks his way through his dread policing record, Amy Klobuchar offers empathy she can't deliver, how to convince your friends to not vote Bloomberg, the Kennedy legacy in Massachusetts, the importance of the Romney vote to remove Trump from office, Lindsey Graham completely flummoxed defending Rudy's claims that he "has the goods," Clinton's 2016 modeling problems,

Happy Thursday, Michael Brooks hosts Connor Kilpatrick from the Jacobin to discuss "Mayor Pete Was the Kinda Kid Who Unplugged the Sega If He Was Losing" and the state of play in the Democratic primary and what will happen to the Pete Buttigieg campaign. Just as the interview with Connor began, Tom Perez tweeted that there would be a "recanvass" in Iowa, where the Iowa Democratic Party will double-check existing records, further delaying the final results in Iowa. The news all comes on the heels of reports that Bernie Sanders nearly closed the state delegate equivalent between himself and Pete Buttigieg. The IDP and DNC's seemingly endless failures on display this week has further illustrated the party's incompetence and the shortcomings of our current meritocratic system. Shifting gears, Michael and Connor explore Buttigieg's career history, his connections to different sources of institutional power, and why establishment Democrats have put their hopes into a college town mayor from Indiana for 2020. The two close out their conversation considering Sanders fundraising haul for January.

And in the Fun Half: Briahna Joy Gray on the Sanders campaign organizing satellite campaign, the DNC recanvassing catastrophe, support for Omar Fateh in Minneapolis, reframing democratic socialism for 21st century Americans, Jason Johnson takes the mantle of the online billionaire-defender, the significance of Mitt Romney's vote to convict Trump on the abuse of power impeachment article, Lindsey Graham is mad, Sebastian Gorka calls Romney a millennial, we revisit Gorka's war college dissertation, inheriting the white supremacy and the "Bernie Bro" moniker, how we warp sociopolitical language and diminish its value, plus your calls and IMs!

News with MR crew and Dr. Rob Davidson (@DrRobDavidson) joins us to discuss Medicare.

On today's show: Steve Kornacki explains the convoluted Iowa caucus delegate count.

Dr. Rob Davidson (@DrRobDavidson), ER doctor and Executive Director of the Committee to Protect Medicare, joins us. Davidson discusses his confrontation with Mike Pence over "block grants," a GOP strategy to force states to make cuts to Medicaid. What block grants mean and the major upcoming votes. How the Medicaid expansion has impacted patients. The longterm damage to productivity incurred by cuts to public healthcare programs. How doctors' conversion from small business owners to wage workers has impacted their support of m4a. Find out more at committeetoprotect.org.

On the fun half: Trump panders to POC (but not the ones from other countries) in SOTU. Trump lies about less people on food stamps. Trump lies about protecting patients with pre-existing conditions. Trump lies about USMCA. Rush Limbaugh surprised by medal ceremony which had been reported by multiple news outlets. Would the MR crew ever vote for Bloomberg? Trump says "stankuary." A caller on how unions in Nevada may play a role in that state's primary. Nancy Pelosi applauds Juan Guaido faster than anyone else at SOTU. Pelosi tears up Trump's speech #nancytheripper. Jason Johnson gets mad at Nina Turner for calling Bloomberg an oligarch. James Carville is losing it over Bernie Sanders and Democratic strategy.

Happy Monday! It's finally here, after more than a year of campaigning, the Democratic presidential hopefuls put in their final pitches before Iowans head to their local precincts to caucus. Dave Weigel of the Washington Post's The Trailer joins us to give the state of play in the Democratic race. And we'll be back for live coverage this evening around 8 PM EST. Weigel recounts his 60+ days in Iowa and fills listeners in on the story behind the scrapped Des Moines Register poll. In trying to predict how the 2020 Democratic primary will shakeup, Weigel admits it's hard to tell because of the lack of polling this cycle. Then, Sam compares the Bernie Sanders 2020 campaign to the Howard Dean campaign in 2004. Weigel then describes each candidate's closing message before tonight's caucus and why Buttigieg has not pulled away from the pack the way Obama did in 2008, despite imitating the 44th president's message. Sam and Weigel consider why power players have not attacked Sanders more comprehensively. Finally, the two conclude their conversation explaining the process for tonight's delegate count.

And in the Fun Half: Chris Matthews' contempt for leftists, looking forward to Super Tuesday, how Trump will treat his exoneration, Chris Christie is right for almost 80 seconds about Mike Bloomberg, understanding China's economy, an upcoming mansplaining convention, the Bernie Sanders campaign's organizing has checked all the boxes in Iowa, reports from precinct captains, in 2016 Rachel Maddow congratulates Bernie's efforts to help Hillary, Rashida Tlaib is fed up with Hillary's comments about Bernie, how to best address Hillary's attacks on Bernie,

Happy Thursday! Michael Brooks is back to host the Majority Report and is joined by Meagan Day to discuss her recent pieces in the Jacobin“How to Clean Up the Welfare State” and “Joe Biden’s Checkered Ethical History Is Fair Game for Criticism.”

Michael and Meagan begin their conversation discussing the importance of door-knocking before your state’s primary. Meagan recounts her conversations with potential voters in California and how she discovered most voters are undecided, and organizers can have a significant impact on persuading them. Michael and Meagan go on to consider the Democratic primary and what the two frontrunners, Biden and Sanders, would look like matched up against Trump. Meagan points out that Trump has been giving a lot of attention to “Crazy Bernie” on the stump. She welcomes a 2020 election that centers whether or not it’s “crazy” to provide healthcare to all, climate justice, and other human rights. To Meagan, there’s a clear distinction between Trump and Bernie’s record on corruption and advocating for working people.

Conversely, Meagan argues, Biden does not offer such a clear difference between himself and Trump. She and Michael layout Biden's record of corruption and his efforts to reform social security. Biden's history makes him an easier target for Trump in a general election and would reinforce the impression that there's little distinction between the two candidates and not bring people to the polls. Michael and Megan conclude their conversation addressing the perception of the American welfare state and how expanding universal programs would help strengthen support for it.

And in the Fun Half: TBT Biden's history of plagiarism, Bloomberg ads on MR videos, Klobuchar's damaging DA history, Jared Kushner and Netanyahu have no respect for the human rights of Palestinians, the utility of leftists appearing on Fox News programs, notes from the ground in Iowa, Bloomberg's NDA silencing, Big Gay Ice Cream is the best, plus your calls and IMs!

Happy Wednesday! Sam  breaks down the latest headlines including the rash of anti-Bernie op-eds and ads landing just days before the Iowa Caucus. The arguments put forth by Jonathan Chait and David Frum fail to recognize the reality of the 2020 election and that its focus will center Donald Trump and defeating him. Their belief that Bernie Sanders is a uniquely unelectable candidate is unfounded for a variety of reasons all of which Sam explores in today's episode.

As the Senate impeachment trial of Donald Trump continues into its eighth day, Sam is joined by historian Brenda Wineapple to discuss the impeachment of Andrew Johnson and her latest book, The Impeachers: The Trial of Andrew Johnson and the Dream of a Just Nation

On today's show: March 2018: Lou Dobbs excited to welcome John Bolton back to White House. Lou Dobbs last night: John Bolton is a tool for the "radical Dims and the deep state."

Historian Brenda Wineapple joins us to discuss the impeachment of Andrew Johnson and her latest book, The Impeachers: The Trial of Andrew Johnson and the Dream of a Just NationWith the assassination of Abraham Lincoln, his VP Andrew Johnson became an unlikely successor to the president widely credited with ending chattel slavery in the US. Johnson then proceeded to use his executive powers to oppose many aspects of Reconstruction, pardoning rebel leaders and defying the will of Congress. Wineapple examines this history, from how Johnson ended up as Lincoln's VP in the first place, to his use of executive power to uphold white supremacy, to the precedent set by the Senate's verdict not to remove him from office. This history seems especially relevant in light of current events.

On the fun half: Country singer John Rich tries to stop a school from teaching about white privilege. Chris Matthews says Bernie wouldn't stop his car to help an average person. Counterpoint: Woman in wheelchair recounts how Bernie helped her avoid getting hit by a car. Steve Rattner on the need for a viable centrist to stop Sanders. Rattner says there's a lot of activity to stop Bernie. Pete Buttigieg, with a straight face: "Polls show I'm the best candidate to take on Trump." Buttigieg remembers Kobe Bryant's excellence on the basketball field. Ben Shapiro says Bernie would've aligned with USSR (hence Nazis) in WW2. Jay Sekulow's brother Jordan, 37, is drunk on TV. Sean Hannity says conspiracy to commit murder is not a crime. Pete Hegseth says the 21st century is 25 days old. Josh from Chicago gives an on-the-ground report re: canvassing for Bernie in Iowa.

Happy Thursday, Michael Brooks hosts Paul Heideman to discuss his latest piece in the Jacobin, "The Third Way is the Past. Socialism is the Future," which tracks neoliberalism's failures, particularly its rejection of the left, and why Democratic Socialism is on the rise. Michael and Heideman begin their conversation tracing the history of Third Way politicians, keeping it limited to parties that had a history aligned with social democratic policies. Heideman highlights programs like federal block grants as a policy change that pared back the welfare state and allowed states to divert funds away from the people and to partisan political projects which functioned to open the free markets. Michael and Heideman shift gears to the UK and Tony Blair's failure to maintain power after his blunders through the Iraq War alongside the marketization of the NHS and education policy in parliament. Heideman argues that Third Way politics in England imploded because New Labor had to own the Iraq War, while the Democrats could blame Republicans for our Mid East blunders. Third Way politics in America have eroded slowly during the Obama presidency after the 44th president's limited bailout reforms and growing wealth inequality. And while Clinton's loss in 2016 seemed like Third Way's demise, it may last a few years longer if Joe Biden can win in 2020. Michael and Heideman conclude their conversation considering why socialism is the best antidote for a runaway capitalist system controlled by oligarchs.

And in the Fun Half: continuing the question of racism's core, useful tips for Bernie phone-bankers, Jim Messina says Bernie is the least electable Democratic candidate, Amy Klobuchar gets the much-coveted Comedy Writers endorsement, a look back at Bernie's consistency, TBT: Jim Messina's homophobic political ad from 2002, a clip of Michael's Lula interview, Zoe Lofgren makes a salient point--we need transparency in government, the Fox & Friends audience do not care about impeachment at all, plus your calls and IMs!

The MR crew breaks down the news.

On today's show: Chris Coons is setting himself up to be a power broker, block progressive agenda. Donate to his primary challenger at jessfordelaware.com! Biden rejects the claim that Bernie is ahead of the VP with black voters under age 35. Trump still complaining about Schiff paraphrasing, says WH has all the material. Jay Sekulow resentful of "lawyer lawsuits;" Adam Schiff responds. John Roberts reprimands lawyers/impeachment managers, reminds Senators of the dignity of the Senate.

On the fun half: Sam and Jamie speak with a surprisingly reasonable libertarian. Biden ad attacks Bernie ad on social security, says he's wanted to protect SS his entire career, will increase benefits. Bernie ad features audio of Biden saying he wants to cut SS in the '90s. 2008: Joe Biden says "absolutely" you have to put SS on the table. Joe Rogan says he'll vote for Bernie...wishes he'd pick Tulsi as running mate. Buttigieg has his "please clap" moment in NH. Josh from Chicago on canvassing in NH. How to support the Palm Beach County Tenants Union: @pbctenantsunionpatreon.com/pbtenantsrising. Kowalski invites Sam to a Polish heritage festival. Biden gets defensive with journalist re: Bernie's apology. A caller on the material origins of right-wing populism.

Happy Tuesday! Author and organizer Jane McAlevey joins Sam to discuss her new book,  A Collective Bargain: Unions, Organizing, and the Fight for Democracy, on how workers must continue to fight with broad-based supermajorities across the working class. McAlevey and Sam begin their conversation discussing the state of labor organizing in America during the Trump era and the recent progress of teacher unions across the country. McAlevey explains how Collective Bargain differs from her previous books and the need to reeducate the working populace on unions and their common misconceptions. McAlevey contextualizes the benefits of unions through Silicon Valley labor practices. She describes how tech become a new arena for organizing in 2020, where forced arbitration agreements leave workers with very little agency over their labor or workplace environments. There is no way around collective organizing if tech workers want to change their company's culture--it cannot happen in a top-down system. Beyond one's place of employment, looking at the state of the judiciary system and the campaign finance laws, the best (and possibly only) tool working people have in our society is to organize with strategic strikes that shut things down in the streets. That is how workers will win in a post-Trump era.

And Nomiki Konst joins Sam for the Fun Half to discuss: Trump's grief over Notre Dame, the 'Middle Class' Joe fallacy, even Tom Brokaw recognizes it, Bernie's ground game in Iowa as the Senate Impeachment trial begins, why the Senate Dems resent Bernie, AOC on challenging the Democrats status-quo and fighting for public programs, the stupidity of the NYT split-endorsement, Protestors are frustrating Pete Buttigieg, former Breitbart lackey Kurt Bardella does not speak for everyday Democrats, plus one call from John in San Antonio!

Happy Friday! Digby and Judy Gold join Sam and the MR Crew to discuss the top stories of the week, including the Lev Parnas revelations, impeachment heads to the Senate, and the breach of the Sanders/Warren non-aggression pact. Starting with *The Story*: Sam and Digby agree that the Sanders and Warren story is new, but it certainly does not deserve the amount of coverage provided by the media. Consider the fact that we were on the brink of war last week, and the president's impeachment trial will begin next week in the Senate. Meanwhile, the revelations from Lev Parnas' document dump shed new light on the Ukraine scandal and the interactions between Giuliani and his Ukrainian oligarch contacts. Digby and Sam go through all the players and key figures involved in the Ukraine quid-pro-quo. Finally, as impeachment moves to the Senate, Digby and Sam consider the limited press access permitted by Mitch McConnell and why Chuck Schumer isn't railing against the leader's decision.

Then, Judy Gold joins Sam and asks how the hell can Ken Starr and Alan Dershowitz possibly be working for the White House in 2020? Judy is at the end of her rope--Democrats need to win the White House back this fall. She's had enough of these assholes in the GOP. They conclude their conversation considering the reasons for having children.

And in the Fun Half: the Saga of American Action Network's "Stacy," John from San Antonio wonders if Elizabeth Warren is angling for a Biden VP spot, low information voters and Chris Hayes' classic TNR piece from 2004, Devin Nunes tries out a dozen lies about his relationship with Lev Parnas, while Donald Trump and Rudy are in the same boat, and if they're going down, they're going down together.

Sam is joined by education writer Robert Pondiscio to discuss his latest book How the Other Half Learns: Equality, Excellence, and the Battle Over School Choice. Matt Binder joins us to host the Fun Half.

On today's show: Sam on the Bernie Sanders/Liz Warren post-debate exchange.

Sam is joined by education writer Robert Pondiscio to discuss his latest book How the Other Half Learns: Equality, Excellence, and the Battle Over School ChoiceSam and Pondiscio discuss the author's year embedding at Success Academy, one of New York's most contentious charter schools: his experience there, the ideas behind public charter schools, and what made Success Academy perform so highly. Sam asks: What about the fact that charter schools attract students whose parents are more motivated and engaged in their lives? Doesn't that skew the results, and maybe disadvantage kids whose parents are not as engaged? A spirited back and forth.

On the fun half: More Bernie/Warren analysis. Chuck Schumer on why he'll vote no on USMCA: it doesn't contain environmental protections. NYT questions Buttigieg on his role in downsizing, Canadian bread price fixing scandal. Kowalski on the inspiring possibilities of American farmers protesting for a Green New Deal.

Sam is joined by Peter Jan Honisberg, professor of law at the University of San Francisco School of Law, to discuss his new book, A Place Outside the Law: Forgotten Voices from Guantánamo. How many people are still imprisoned at Guantánamo Bay and how/why the US has a base in Cuba. The narrow circumstances under which the Bush admin would release detainees. How the US purchased its prisoners. The heartbreaking stories of the Guantánamo prisoners, loved ones, and whistleblowers. The torture tactics used on prisoners. How whistleblower Matt Diaz unmasked violations of the Geneva Convention. The invention of the term "enemy combatant." Obama's broken promise to close the camp and what he could have done to make good on it.

On the fun half: Mike from PA sparks a convo about the latest Bernie/Warren kerfuffle. Warren says she's disappointed in Bernie campaign criticizing her supporters. Warren fundraising email blast about Bernie campaign's (alleged) critique of her electability. Politico poll reports same info as the "attack" on Warren. Gun girl Kaitlyn Bennett gets shut down by college student about bathroom hysteria. Trump says we're making great deals with the Saudis and they're paying for our troops. Mark Esper equivocates on Trump's claim about the embassies being targeted. Joe Biden at Brookings in July 2003: we need to go to Iraq and stay there for a long time. Biden endorses "prevention doctrine" in support of preventative wars.

Happy Friday! On today's show, Benjamin Dixon (@BenjaminPDixon), host of the Benjamin Dixon Show. Sam and Ben begin their conversation considering the conclusion of the "Clinton Investigation," which will end in the coming weeks "with no criminal charges or other known impacts," according to the Washington Post. Switching gears to material and present issues, Dixon and Sam switch gears to the Congressional proposals from Elisse Slotkin, Barbara Lee, and Tim Kaine aimed at limiting the White House's military powers. The two then describe the tick-tock of how the Trump administration further destabilized US diplomatic relations in both Iraq and Iran after using faulty intelligence to deploy rash military actions. These developments alone are grounds for impeachment. With that in mind, McConnell's decision to endorse legislation that would dismiss articles impeachment means nothing; Pelosi can send new articles based on this week's actions alone. Considering the stakes in the Senate, where has minority leader Chuck Schumer been in all of this? Dixon and Sam conclude their conversation reflecting on billionaire ad spending in the 2020 election and Steyer's massive leap to 15% in the latest South Carolina Democratic primary poll.

And in the Fun Half: some positive veganism, ending the Hillary Clinton DOJ investigation once and for all, Sam agrees with Trey Gowdy's assessment that impeachment will hurt vulnerable GOP senators, Trump is back out on the campaign trail to sell the Suleimani assassination, Biden's history shows he's stuck in the era of bipartisanship and cutting social services, plus your calls and IMs!

Happy Thursday, Michael Brooks is joined by Djene Bajalan to discuss the state of affairs in the Middle East and the United States' history of interference in Iran. Starting in 1953, Brooks and Bajalan discuss the CIA's role in removing Mohammed Mossadegh from power. Mosadegh was a staunch nationalist whose primary goal in office was to nationalize Iran's oil reserves, which at the time was under the control of the British Empire. Bajalan takes a broader view of Persia before the 1950s and Mosadegh's rule and the region's history with reclaiming its natural resources before foreign powers who were colonizing or warring in neighboring areas. Brooks and Bajalan also explore the Shah's role in disposing of Mossadegh and the monarchy's interests and its intersection between both domestic needs and international pressure. Bajalan then describes the developments which led to the overthrow of the Shah in 1979 and the coalition between Iranian leftists and Islamists leading the revolution behind the Ayatollah's rise. Bajalan and Brooks conclude the interview discussing the Iraq-Iran conflict of the 80s, Iranian President Mohammad Khatami's efforts to improve relations with America in the 90s, and the contemporary state of affairs between the US and Iran.

And in the Fun Half: Pence pushes the "sources and methods" defense as reason for not sharing any intel to Congress, Rand Paul and Mike Lee on yesterday's inadequate intel hearing from the White House, KT McFarland and Pete Buttigieg give boths sides of American ahistorical understanding of Islam and Iran, considering the Elizabeth Warren's campaign heading into the Iowa caucus, addressing the real concerns of anti-semitism from within the Jewish community, on providing healthcare to undocumented immigrants, plus your calls and IMs!

Happy New Year! The MR crew is back to catch you up on the headlines of the past ten days. Sam opens 2020 with a look ahead of what to expect from the Majority Report before the November's general elections, including live coverage of debates, the Iowa caucus, and Super Tuesday. In Washington, while Pelosi and McConnell remain at loggerheads with impeachment proceedings, vulnerable Republicans in purple states are hedging on a "no witness" trial. Meanwhile, Democrats in red states are standing their ground and publicly supporting a full trial in the Senate. Switching gears to the 2020 campaign, Sam looks at a Biden clip from a recent speech in New Hampshire where the former Vice President shares his feelings on running on a split ticket with a GOP running mate. Looking at the broader 2020 Democratic field, the crew breaks down Andrew Yang's commitment to Medicare for All, which doesn't offer something as meager as a public option. Sam closes out the free half of the show analyzing how Trump's "maximum pressure" campaign against Iran functions as war hawk virtue signaling.

And in the Fun Half: Mindy gets the first call of 2020 and wants to talk about Bernie's fundraising! Exploring the relationship between Bernie and MSNBC "road warrior" Vaughn Hillyard, a question about animal ethics puts Sam "in a bit of a corner," seems like Mike Bloomberg doesn't remember the Central Park Five and their lawsuit he fought while NYC Mayor, Ivanka Trump gets a holiday fluff interview on Face the Nation, Sam explains his Twitter back-and-forth with Norm Ornstein, plus your calls and IMs!

Matthew Blackwell (@Matt_Blackwell), Associate Professor of Government at Harvard University, joins us to discuss his co-authored book, "Deep Roots: How Slavery Still Shapes Southern Politics."

Why do certain parts of the US seem to be particularly "conservative" when it comes to race? "Behavioral path dependence" and the effects of institutions on behavior. How the growth of US slavery centuries ago still affects politics today. The linear relationship between the increase in enslaved people in an area to current racist political attitudes today: The more the whites were outnumbered by slaves, the more racist they became. The extreme reaction by white southerners to emancipation. The persistence of racist attitudes that originated during slavery and emancipation/reconstruction.
