The Majority Report with Sam Seder

On this Best of 2020: Sam hosts author, radio host, and Spy Magazine founder Kurt Andersen to discuss his latest book Evil Geniuses: The Unmaking of America: A Recent History and how the last 50 years have turned the clock back on economic equality and progress in America. Andersen and Sam begin their conversation discussing the power of nostalgia and how it took such a hold in American culture after the 60s counterrevolution and civil rights movement. The two continue their conversation discussing the Lewis Powell memo and how corporate leaders wanted to change public sentiment towards corporate capitalism. Sam also explains his appreciation of Andersen’s novel Turn of the Century and Andersen shares how his political attitudes changed during that period at the beginning of the 21st century. Andersen and Sam conclude the conversation as to what lies ahead for younger generations of Americans and how does Joe Biden help usher in change, maybe.

On todays Best of: Sam hosts NY-14 congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (@AOC) to discuss her June 23rd primary and what to expect from the progressive caucus before the next round of Covid-19 relief. Historian Gerald Horne joins Sam to discuss the history of Juneteenth in the age of Trump.

On today’s show: AOC’s closing campaign ad pitch for reelection: “A better world is possible.”

NY-14 congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (@AOC) joins Sam to discuss her June 23rd primary and what to expect from the progressive caucus before the next round of Covid-19 relief. Why the finance industry is donating to AOC’s opponent, Michelle Caruso-Cabrera, the former CNBC anchor who lived in Trump tower before she carpet-bagged her way to Queens. The balance between local and national politics and the importance of mutual aid. The reasoning behind AOC’s votes on the CARES and HEROES acts. Why the progressive caucus isn’t always so progressive.

Historian Gerald Horne joins Sam to discuss the history of Juneteenth in the age of Trump. The various steps that led to Texas finally abolishing slavery on June 19, 1865. The messy process of actually getting rid of unpaid labor. How revisionists have changed this history to fit a liberal narrative. How Juneteenth could be adopted as a national holiday and what it might look like. Check out Horne’s newest book, “The Dawning of the Apocalypse: The Roots of Slavery, White Supremacy, Settler Colonialism, and Capitalism in the Long Sixteenth Century.”

On today's Best of: Sam hosts Stephen Wertheim, the Deputy Director of Research at the Quincy Institute, to discuss his new book, Tomorrow the World: The Birth of U.S. Global Supremacy and the political and intellectual history behind U.S. global hegemony post-WWII. Wertheim and Sam begin their interview by discussing the Monroe Doctrine’s implications and its role in defining the role of America’s assumption of global hegemony. Wertheim explains how the Council of Foreign Relations forecasted how to best distribute world power after WWII and how the American people would prosper under a “quartered” world. However, the CFR determined a quartered-ruled world was not a politically viable option. Wertheim teases out his thesis that interventionists and internationalists together realized that global dominion and a U.S. “world order” were essential to American exceptionalism and maintaining modern humanity. Sam and Wertheim also discuss post-War State Department planners arrived at founding the United Nations. Sam and Wertheim conclude their conversation with an assessment of what’s to come as American hegemony sundowns.

On today's Best Of 2020: Sam hosts Pulitzer Prize-winning Yale Historian David Blight to discuss his recent biography of Frederick Douglass, Frederick Douglass: Prophet of Freedom, and how the Reconstruction era lives on in our contemporary politics. Sam and Blight take a deep dive into Frederick Douglass the orator and the ways his politics and activism altered between radical and pragmatism. Then Sam and Blight place Douglass in the larger historical context of reconstruction and post-reconstruction and how we are still living in the political reality forged after the Civil War.

For today's best of 2020, Sam hosts Cornell Professor of American Institutions Suzanne Mettler to discuss her latest book, Four Threats: The Recurring Crises of American Democracy and what we can learn from history to understand American democracy’s vulnerabilities. Mettler and Sam explore the moments in American history when the citizenry was worried about “democratic deterioration” and democratic backsliding and what caused those concerns. Mettler explains how her book explores the ostensibly settled elements of democracy, like voting rights. Mettler and Sam also recount the Wilmington, North Carolina insurrection story in 1898 when white citizens massacred black citizens and formed a constitutional convention to institute poll taxes and anti-democratic systems.

On today's show: Sam hosts Michael Sandel (@JusticeHarvard), Professor of Political Philosophy at Harvard University, to discuss his new book The Tyranny of Merit: What's Become of the Common Good?on the shortcomings of the "meritocratic" system and what we can do to fix it. The myth of the American meritocracy has long been used to justify a set of policies that are antithetical to social mobility. Sandel traces the history of this ideology, shows why it's a lie, and most radically, interrogates why, even if the meritocracy were real, it would not produce a truly democratic society.

McConnell celebrates passing stimulus: "help is on the way."

On the fun half: Pelosi says she wishes $600 direct payments were bigger but they're still significant. Walking out of conference, Pelosi does not answer question about taking up Mnuchin bill. Biden Surgeon General nominee tempers expectations for vaccination timeline: "We want to be realistic." Lou Dobbs apologizes for defaming Smartmatic voting machines, runs news package exculpating Smartmatic (lawsuit pending). Talking about 1776 commission, Charlie Kirk says we should focus on good American history, not the bad stuff. Asked about Trump's meeting with Powell and Michael Flynn, Congressman John Curtis (UT-03) says they're just conversations, not revolutions. Plus, your calls and IMs!

Sam hosts writer and political analyst Jared Yates Sexton to discuss his new book, American Rule: How a Nation Conquered the World But Failed Its People, and why the foundational myths of American Exceptionalism have such a hold on the populace. Sam and Jared explore the stories Americans told themselves throughout the country's history, from how the process behind writing the Constitution to how the "Mound Builders" stories helped justify indigenous Americans' slaughter. The two consider how these stories have shaped the populace's thinking and why it's essential to reject politics as a spectacle.
