Good morning, today the MR crew breaks down the live news from Barr's Mueller Report press conference and the fight for the Democratic nomination's latest war of words between Bernie Sanders and the Center for American Progress. While the Mueller Report has ostensibly been released by the Department of Justice. However, to any shrewd political observer, Barr's press conference was a textbook demonstration of how a ruling party disseminates news. It's not a coincidence that Bill Barr gave a speech looking to exonerate Trump of any wrongdoing the day before the Easter and Passover holidays. Taking a quick break from the Mueller Report, Sean McElwee from Data for Progress joins Sam to discuss the changing landscape and left-punching developing in the Democratic Party. For McElwee, this fight began with the DCCC decision to blacklist political vendors who work with candidates who primary sitting Democrats, even if that Democrats is an anti-choice right leaning official like Dan Lipinski. This decision has metastasized to an effort to squash the Justice Democrats and their desire to push the party left. It seems the Democratic leadership has forgotten the messages that won them the house in 2018: that they will concentrate on investigating Trump and advocate for voter rights policies like HR 1. Democratic leadership has capitulated to the bad faith Republicans demands to condemn and ostracize new Democratic members of Congress like Ilhan Omar and Rashida Tlaib. McElwee believes the reactions to the 2018 midterms comes down to a generational divide in the new Democratic majority. Pelosi, Hoyer, and Cummings wish things could go back to the "Beltway as Usual" while AOC, Omar, and Jayapal are trying to push a more aggressive party with bold reform like the Green New Deal and Medicare for All. Good morning, joining Michael Brooks on today's show is Mike Hanna to discuss the story behind how the Trump administration approved private nuclear development contracts to the Saudi regime. Mike Hanna helps explain the Trump administrations role and the players involved in selling nuclear development contracts to the Saudis. Under normal circumstances, a presidential administration must first enter a "123 agreement" before selling nuclear contracts to foreign countries. According to Senator Bob Menendez the US "can only enter into [nuclear] force after Congress has reviewed it and evaluated whether the agreement meets the nonproliferation standards required by Section 123 of the Atomic Energy Act of 1954." The United States has no such agreement with Saudi Arabia, nor is there any plan for Congress to approve one especially given the Kingdom's murder of journalist Jamal Khashoggi. Mike and Michael then discuss the status of the Iran deal and the recognition of the Golan Heights as part of Israel in the context of new Saudi nuclear development contracts. Good Thursday morning, joining Michael today is professor Daniel Bessner, author of Democracy in Exile, to discuss his latest piece in the Nation "Foreign Policy Beyond Good and Evil." Bessner argues that as the 2020 primaries come into view progressives should be cautious about how Warren and Sanders understand international relations. Bessner and Brooks begin their conversations in the 1930s when the Western allied forces and Northern Atlantic countries confronted Nazi forces. During the Cold War, the United States cemented its foreign policy world view as democratic goodness versus evil which constituted anything standing in the way of Americans international agenda. Comparing adversaries to Nazis gives American foreign policy leaders license to endless militarism abroad. Bessner argues that we need to judge international leaders bad policies beyond "good and evil," comparing the Iranian regime to Nazism is neither accurate depiction nor productive to building a stable Middle East. So then, how can the Left advocate global humanitarian crises in American politics? Bessner believes that developing new domestic humanitarian aid policies would be a good first step, albeit an ambitious one, towards a more just global community. Bessner and Brooks conclude the interview sharing their thoughts on the foreign policy positives and negatives of the leading progressive candidates (Sanders and Warren) seeking the 2020 nomination. Bessner leaves the show asking listeners to consider all the ways in which the military is valorized in American life. If we want to reframe US militarism we must first disentangle all the ways the military pervades our culture and everyday lives. Good Thursday morning, joining Michael Brooks on today's Majority Report is Richard Beck to discuss his essay, "The Korean Peace Process" published in n+1. Beck breaks down American foreign policy on the Korean peninsula and it hasn’t done any real thinking in two years. Beck explains how all parties involved in the recent Vietnam Korean Peace Summit were on different pages. Coming out of Vietnam each side is two steps back from where they started, each side at least now has a more realistic understanding of what a peace agreement might look like in the near future. Beck explains how John Bolton has made it his agenda to offer no concessions to North Korea and demanded full denuclearization, a position untenable to Kim and his negotiators. Brooks and Beck broaden the conversation of how our foreign policy leaders treat authoritarian regimes with poor human rights records and how it is used to legitimize US intervention. With all this in mind Beck argues US media coverage of the Korean peace process is an inaccurate caricature of itself. Kim and Trump approach and role within their respective governments are mostly opposite. Beck then explores the role of China and Japan and each country's position on achieving peace on the Korean peninsula. Ultimately, Beck believes that if left to his own devices Trump would likely give up whatever he needed to in order to get a peace deal and the real prize for Trump, a Nobel Peace Prize--someone just needs to convince Trump that John Bolton is a "real bad guy." Joining Michael Brooks on today's show is Liz Franczak to discuss her new essay in the Baffler, "The Century of Spin," and the origins of neoliberal sociopolitical culture. Liz Franczak recounts the story of Edward Bernays, who “pioneered the field of modern public relations after serving under Woodrow Wilson during World War I, overseeing propaganda initiatives aimed at selling the war to the public and maximizing recruiting efforts.” Bernays and his intellectual contemporaries felt that state managed economies and social democratic programs were a slippery slope to fascism. The masses needed to be guided by the intellectual class to stay away from what they thought was creeping fascism. This idea of "guided democracy" was developed by Walter Lippmann, a public intellectual and contemporary of Bernays, who sincerely thought he and his cohorts needed to take care of the unwashed masses. Which led to the summit at Mont Pelerin where Lippmann and leading classical liberal thought leaders (like Friedrich Hayek) convened to shape a new free market-based society committed to unwinding the post-war social democratic state in the West. Franczak argues the neoliberal rationality has created a new understanding of the Self as primarily itemized human capital. And while Europe has a longer historical understanding of the self to disentangle neoliberal culture, America does not have that advantage. Now several decades removed from the Mont Pelerin summit, what does our society look like? Franczak points out the failures of the neoliberal technocratic state and the nationalist populist rage railing against it, but wonders where does the rest of the country go? On today's show, historian Greg Grandin (@GregGrandin), joins us to discuss his new book, The End of the Myth: From the Frontier to the Border Wall in the Mind of America. At the foundation of America is the idea of expansionism. For centuries the United States has expanded its borders, markets, and policy in order to alleviate domestic issues and would dilute problems of factionalism. Unlike other imperial powers, Grandin believes the United States married the ideas of liberty and imperial domination and created a fundamental national identity where expansion through imperialism could be see as an innate "freedom." But expansion is also hits limits. USA expansionism has hit walls during the Great Depression and then again Vietnam war; responses to these limitations addressed expansion in new ways. During the Great Depression expansion through socialization via the New Deal brought greater liberation and freedom from tyranny. Under Reagan, liberty and expansion existed as freedom from taxation and the government bureaucracy created after WWII. Moving to 2018, Grandin argues that Trump's policy and understanding of expansion exists at the southern border, it's a push back against universal liberalism and the idea that a global economy can lift all ships. Under Trump, the opportunity for growth is gone, there are limits and we need to take care of our own. The Wall is a real representation of hedonistic brutality that inverts the myth of the frontier and expansion, it is an expansion from within. Milton Allimadi joins the program today on a Michael Brooks Thursday to discuss the on-going protest and civil unrest in Sudan over President Omar al-Bashir's austerity measures. Allimadi and Brooks will also preview the upcoming South African general elections set to take place in May. We're live at 12:00 PM EST. Sudanese President Omar al-Bashir has ruled for over 30 years but recent protests over bread prices and a rise in poverty have led to anti-austerity marches against al-Bashir's government. Last week, al-Bashir declared a year-long national emergency which according to France24, "dissolves the federal and provincial governments and appoints 16 army officers and two officers from the feared National Intelligence and Security Service as provincial governors." Allimadi believes there is now a chance for open elections which will not be led by opposition parties but by the professional class and those leading the bread price protests--i.e., unions and students. While there are several level of coercive power structures standing in the way of these unions and student organizers, these groups represent the best means towards a more equitable Sudanese representative government. Allimadi and Brooks then take a wider view on the issue of corporate media coverage across Africa which highlights peoples' suffering without explaining the systemic structural issues of extraction and exploitation which fuel the cyclical atrocities across the continent. South Africa will hold elections under Cyril Ramaphosa in May; it will be the sixth election held since the end of the apartheid system in 1994. Allimadi breaks down the issues animating voters in South Africa before they head to the polls this spring including land reform, expropriation and the larger economic disparity between white and black households. Allimadi believes if South Africa does not reconcile these gaping inequalities will threaten their democracy's existence. Ending on a positive note, Allimadi suggests listeners interested in learning more about inequality and organizing in South Africa should check out Steve Biko's speeches and lectures. Biko's intellectual output provides a roadmap for how African countries can forge real autonomy in the contemporary global economy. Historian of paramilitary social movements and author of "Bring the War Home: The White Power Movement and Paramilitary America," Kathleen Belew joins us today to discuss her book. How a 1979 Greensboro, NC was a spiritual precursor to the recent Charlottesville, Virginia white supremacist meet-up. White nationalism as an unpatriotic desire for an Aryan Nation as opposed to America as a multicultural state. How America's foreign military deployments fed white power movements in the US, in all the 20th century conflicts but particularly Vietnam. Roberto traces his definition of fascism to the American financial system in 1920s. Life in America in the 1920s was the epicenter of capitalism, this is period of great prosperity for Americans. The financial system during this period consolidated and became the most essential actor in the American economy, something most every American depended on. While most American understand fascism as a bottom-up and petite bourgeois movement like what transpired in Italy and Germany, Roberto argues that American fascism is a top-down, namely protecting the interest of Big Business. Today, Sam is joined by Brown University professor Corey Brettschneider to discuss his new book, The Oath and the Office: A Guide to the Constitution for Future Presidents in which Brettschneider lays out the constitutional limits at any point in time on the chief executive office. People often overlook the first thing the President does in the office, which is read an oath. This oath is prescribed from the second article of the constitution laying out the requirements of protecting the constitution. Brettschneider believes the Trump and the Supreme Court have failed to uphold the articles of the constitution, namely the travel ban Trump enacted his first weeks in government. Brettschneider explains the different interpretations of the constitution and schools of thoughts that exist on our current Supreme Court like Originalism and Textualism. With that said, Brettschneider really doesn't think Trump is serving with any functional understanding of the constitution--he's simply appointing Federalist Society and Judicial Watch originalist judges to the nation's highest courts. On today's show, Jamila Michener (@povertyscholar), Professor in the department of Government at Cornell University, joins us to discuss her new book, Fragmented Democracy: Medicaid, Federalism, and Unequal Politics. Medicaid is one of the most fundamental aspects of the US federal safety net, however it is fractured and constantly under attack by state governments, especially in GOP-controlled states. Michener explains that states have very expansive control over what they will and will not cover for its Medicaid recipients. The way that Americans provide care is fragmented and inconsistent. Michener says American social policy towards people living in poverty is one where we give people as little help as possible. States should have an much discretion as possible when dealing with its poor people. This is most illustrative in the difference between Medicare and Medicaid. In the former we have a nationalized program where the funding and policy is set by the federal program; and in the latter a program that is different from state to state, leaving a vulnerable class at the whims of its state's balance sheet. Michener and Sam also consider lower class involvement in the political process and how their action or absence influences election outcomes. Joining correspondent Michael Brooks on today's program is Steven A. Cook (@stevenacook), the Eni Enrico Mattei senior fellow for Middle East and Africa studies at the Council on Foreign Relations, to discuss the status of America's Syria withdrawal and how Recep Tayyip Erdoğan and John Bolton's cancelled meeting can help explain where the US Turkish relationship stands. The Trump administration's foreign policy agenda hardly seems to have any guiding vision at all--it looks more like bad improv that could bring mass suffering. The basic premise of withdrawing from Syria is a positive one for US forces, but is it primarily a move to placate Turkey after the Khashoggi murder fallout? Cook explains how Trump and Erdogan discussed a withdrawal from Syria for over a month. According to Cook, Trump did not know that YPG, the Kurdish allies fighting alongside US forces in Syria, was considered a "terrorist organization" by Turkey and Erdogan. Trump then saw an opportunity to satisfy the wishes of Turkey and his base by pulling out of Syria. Looming over this development is the status of ISIS. Cook breaks down the history of Turkey's conflict between Syrian Kurds, ISIS, and explains and why American forces did and didn't intervene. If any of this confuses you, we got you covered. Cook helps explains the difference between the PKK (Kurdistan) and YPG (Syrian Kurds) and their respective actions in their fight for autonomy in Turkey and Syria. The PKK helped set up the YPG, there is a linkage between the two, there are fighters working for both outfits which is a result of the nature of the conflict in Syria. Brooks explains that PKK have indeed employed violent tactics in order to establish their commendable social democratic ends--tactics not dissimilar from those used by the IRA in Northern Ireland. American foreign policy experts are now considering whether or not to consider these Kurdish fighters are a terrorist organization. The Turks are pushing experts in Washington to lump Kurds into the same category of threat as ISIS and Al Qaeda. Trump waffling on the US forces departure makes the Syrian conflict more complex. However, it also signals open season for bad actors in the region. For context, after Trump's announcement Saudi Arabia rewrote its defense doctrine, allowing its armed forces to continue its bombing campaign in Yemen. Further, Turkey calling the Kurds terrorists shows that once US troops are out of Syria there will like be a direct conflict between Turkey and the Kurds. If that was not enough Middle Eastern policy for you, Brooks and Cook serve up a quick rundown of el-Sisi's Egypt after Sec. of State Mike Pompeo delivered a proverbial green light speech to the dictator's leadership today. Good morning on today's show, Kevin M. Kruse (@KevinMKruse) and Julian E. Zelizer (@julianzelizer), co-authors of Fault Lines A History of the United States Since 1974. Professors Kruse and Zelizer from Princeton University's History Department join the Majority Report to discuss their latest book, Fault Lines A History of the United States Since 1974. Kruse and Zelizer start our contemporary political moment at Nixon's resignation, and draw out the areas in which our understanding of America shifts from the New Deal union, manufacturing-based economy to one of free enterprise and laissez-faire economics. Beyond economic changes of the 70s and 80s, there was a growing distrust of the federal government. Zelizer describes how the normalization of government shutdowns which have become a standard part of policy battles in Washington has had a negative impact on our discourse. These fault lines extend to social issues as well, particularly gender and sexuality. Kruse explains how the growth of feminism and the reaction to it, the "family values" & "moral majority" movement, covered a huge swath of social issues that are still debated today--driving Americans further into their selected voting camps. Amidst all these fault lines is the news media. Zelizer explains how Fox News and conservative media in particular have reshaped and fractured the media landscape. The repeal of the Fairness Doctrine in 1987 is the pivotal moment in policy which allowed right wing talk radio and Fox to gain a stranglehold on the conservative narrative. An overlooked by-product of the Fairness Doctrine is the dramatization of the news, according to Kruse the news media has turned from a dour and even-keeled information enterprise to a freewheeling, pro-wrestling, high-stakes drama designed to keep viewers hooked on its 24-hour news cycle. Finally, Zelizer and Kruse push back against the false equivalency that "both sides" created these fault lines, especially in the media narrative--most of these issues were driven to further extremes by conservative activists and political actors. Sam ends the interview asking Kruse and Zelizer if they think the GOP has been anything other than party of white grievance politics--their answers will surprise you (maybe)! June 26, 2018 Dr. Henry Giroux, writer, cultural critic, and professor at McMaster University joins us to discuss his latest book, American Nightmare: Facing the Challenge of Fascism, a collection of essays that reckons with the swell of white-supremacy, anti-immigrant policy, and everyday-racism that has taken hold and prospered in our highest offices and permeated our mass culture. Giroux questions what it would take for Americans to stand up to such injustices and what we’re willing to give up before our democracy is rendered unrecognizable. Giroux details how fascism grows incrementally, with people living their daily lives until their basic liberties are taken away. If violence becomes the only resolution to our set of social problems, our neoliberal political landscape becomes inoperable. Our political language is more codified than ever, it’s a language that maintains power for political elites in Washington (hence Trump). Power is not just about domination, it’s about resistance. Joining Michael Brooks on today's program is Kelly Weill from the Daily Beast to discuss her latest deep dive into the alt-right, "How YouTube Built a Radicalization Machine for the Far-Right." While YouTube's algorithm can be a great tool to learn how to hang shelves or paint a wall properly, it can also radicalize gamer teens and draw them into far-right ideas before they even know it. And there's no way out of YouTube's algorithm--there is no opt-out. Weill's reporting delves into the company's business model and explains how the far right online community perpetuates and builds up an echo-chamber via the YouTube algorithm. Some of the subjects interviewed were teens when they began watching Call of Duty videos which led to atheism video and eventually from there to race science and ethno-nationalist content. Weill posits that YouTube's problem is not primarily its content, but rather how its algorithm promotes content--the most radical videos will keep you watching, and that's all the algorithm objective, to keep you online. Michael and Kelly then open up the conversation to regulating the digital media and social media spaces. How do we effectively regulate these monopolies? Nationalize them? Break them up? Government oversight? Finally, Michael and Kelly contemplate how platforms like YouTube have brought back certain questions that some time ago were exorcized from society. How do we draw the line between disengaging from these questions so as to not lend them credence while making sure that the vulnerable do not fall into the traps created by those with hateful ideologies? From the writing of the constitution onward, federal statutes contained many compromises and omissions where slavery was concerned. With the passage of the Fugitive Slave Act in 1850, the north was forced to play a more active role in keeping people in chains, ultimately catalyzing wider opposition to slavery and hastening the dissolution of the union. Joining the Majority Report's Michael Brooks today to discuss MBS, Trump, and US-Turkey relations is Steven A. Cook, a senior fellow for Middle East and Africa studies at the Council on Foreign Relations. Cook and Brooks look into how the Khashoggi murder has led to a large outpouring of moral outrage in DC and it has mobilized action against the Saudis actions in Yemen. But where was that outrage against the Saudis in 2015 when the war in Yemen began? Cook explains how the Houthis and Saudis have been opponents since the 1930s. Cook and Brooks then break down the US history and involvement in the Arabian peninsula and how the infamous underwear bomber, Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab, brought the Saudis war in Yemen to Obama's attention--precipitating American involvement in the Saudis' war. Cook also recounts his 2018 trip to Saudi Arabia and what Saudis thought about MBS, his plans for reform, and the war effort in Yemen prior to the Khashoggi killing. Cook was surprised to find out after the Khashoggi killing that Saudis saw criticism of MBS as typical behavior from the US media and an unfair treatment of their heir apparent. In his latest Foreign Policy piece, "Mohammed bin Salman Is Worse Than a Criminal. He’s a Symbol," Cook looks to explain to Saudis why Americans were outraged by the Khashoggi murder. According to Cook, MBS is stunned by the reaction to Khashoggi. Cook believes this might be the case because MBS and his leaders are closest advisors were not educated by leading western institutions like his predecessors and peers. Ideally, the Khashoggi murder should be a moment to shine a light on larger atrocities perpetrated by the Saudis, instead of a new low in what crimes America allows the Saudis to commit. Cook and Brooks wrap the interview looking forward to what's next in the Mueller probe as the investigation begins to explore the connections between Middle Eastern political operatives from the Saudis to the Emiratis and the Israelis. Daniel Bessner, professor at Washington University's Henry M. Jackson School of International Studies and author of Democracy in Exile, joins Michael Brooks to explains his vision of an authentically left-progressive foreign policy. Bessner and Brooks begin by explaining what happened at senator Bernie Sanders' Sanders Institute’s inaugural conference, where thought leaders like Fernando Haddad, Yanis Varofakis and Sanders laid out plans for an international coalition as a counterbalance to our highly nationalistic political moment. A big concern for Brooks is the axis of far-right governments taking power in the Caribbean and South America and their cozy relationship with our current leaders, specifically John Bolton. How would a left foreign policy reorient these relationships that are so grounded in imperialism and resource extraction? Progressive voices in America need to build coalitions and show solidarity with the working-class people and left politicians in countries like Brazil, and use our position in the world to enable it--while still being aware of the nature of an imperialist history. According to Bessner, investing in alternative energies in America would transform our policy in the Middle East. It would allow America to be less beholden to the Saudi family and allow the US to promote democratic and human rights values in Israel, Palestine, and beyond. An overarching theme Bessner wants progressives to remember is our own moral relativism throughout these foreign policy debates. In any scenario, we must be aware of our values and what we may be imposing on other people. And finally, Bessner and Brooks consider how changing a consumption-first mindset might underpin a robust left foreign policy.
