Sam speaks with Daniel Poppen, member of the union organizing committee at the Trader Joe’s location in the North Center neighborhood of Chicago, to discuss the staff’s decision to file for a union election. Then, he speaks with Matt Bruenig, founder of the People’s Policy Project, author of the NLRB Edge newsletter, and co-host of “The Bruenigs” podcast, to discuss his recent NLRB filing against Steven Crowder. First, Sam reacts to State Dept. spokesperson Matthew Miller refusing to answer the Associated Press's Matt Lee's question about why they've been unable to verify whether Israel struck an Iranian diplomatic target in Syria. Then, Sam's joined by Dan Poppen as they take us through the steps that led the Trader Joe's North Center location in Chicago to vote for a union election. Dan discusses some of the issues that have been facing Trader Joe's workers, the inspiration they've received from other unionizing Trader Joe's locations around the country, and what they can anticipate going forward after the vote totals are finalized. Then, Sam is joined by Matt Bruenig to discuss his representation of Jared Monroe, AKA "Not Gay Jared", the former "Louder With Crowder" employee, who has filed a complaint with the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB) against Steven Crowder and the company. Bruenig outlines the main pillars that constitute the NLRB complaint, and provides some context to Jared's experience while working for Steven Crowder, what that entailed, and what they're hoping to achieve as the complaint is arbitrated and decided upon.

And in the Fun Half, Sam reacts to Google employees demonstrating and conducting sit-ins against Google's work with Israel in their New York and California offices. He and Matt then check in on Speaker Johnson's tightrope walk, attempting to pass a supplemental foreign aid bill, which his far-right faction doesn't want. Johnson, who's now referring to him as a "wartime Speaker", is losing soldiers as an outline has been revealed, with Pennsylvania Rep. Scott Perry complaining that there's no border funding in the legislation (it was in another bill that Perry and his cohort didn't support). On the other end, former Kevin McCarthy confidant Rep. Garret Graves asks the all-important question: "What are Republicans getting" from this supplemental? And now, Speaker Johnson is only being offered tepid support from former President Trump, who is now willing to wait and see what happens to him with the motion to vacate looming over his head. Sam and Matt then turn to Trump's hush money trial, with Trump attorney and spokesperson Alina Habba telling Fox's Martha McCallum that Trump will be regarded like *wait for it* Nelson Mandela if he were to be put in jail for violating his gag order. Sam covers the recent Politico scoop of comedian Rob Schneider tanking a performance in front of Senate Republicans and their staffers, before diving into Trump's recent rally this weekend where he heard chants of "Genocide Joe!", to which he responded in part by saying: "You're not wrong". And, finally, Sam and Matt step into Dave Rubin's corner, where Rubin discusses his concerns about his inability to "arbitrage" the divide between the left and the right. Then, they check in on Dave's conversation with Will Cain from last week, where Dave tries his absolute hardest to take shots at Tucker Carlson and Candace Owens while *trying his absolute hardest* not to actually take shots at Tucker Carlson or Candace Owens. Sam and Emma speak with Dylan Penningroth, professor of Law and History at the University of California, Berkeley, to discuss his recent book Before The Movement: The Hidden History of Black Civil Rights. First, Sam and Emma run through updates on Iran’s military-specific retaliation to Israel’s bombing of their consulate, Trump’s ongoing hush money trial, FISA renewal, Mike Johnson’s Ukraine package, dropping violent crime and burglary rates, Haiti’s “ruling council,” Tesla’s mass firing, and Biden’s polling, before diving a little deeper into the rationality behind Iran’s approach to Israeli violence. Professor Dylan Penningroth then joins, diving right into the personal story behind his decades-long research into the major evolution of Black civil rights as a concept. Stepping back, Professor Penningroth, looks to the 19th-century conceptualization of Black civil rights, with a particular distinction from any political or social rights, carving out a minuscule space in civil society where Black people were given very particular privileges, first contextualizing what these “civil” privileges entailed (largely relating to low-level contract and property law), before walking through the evolution of these rights in both the reconstruction era and during the subsequent White Supremacist backlash at the turn of the 20th Century. Expanding on this, Penningroth walks through Lincoln’s role in enumerating the ideology of separate political, social, and civil rights in the US (with only the latter needed for true equality), and the consistent pushback from Black activists from the 1830s through the 1960s, insisting that both social and political rights were needed to guarantee the civil. Wrapping up, Dylan walks Sam and Emma through how the mainstream conceptualization of civil rights evolved from the Party of Lincoln to the Civil Rights Movement of the 1960s.

And in the Fun Half: Sam and Emma discuss the Biden Administration’s careful approach to ongoing developments between Iran and Israel, dive into coverage of Trump’s hush money trial (and MR’s potential coverage), and discuss AOC’s growing role in the Democratic Party. Sam and Emma speak with Jeremy Kimbrell, a measurement machine operator at the  Mercedes-Benz plant in Vance, Alabama and member of the volunteer organizing committee at the plant, to discuss the plant’s recent decision to file for a union election with the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB), to join the United Auto Workers (UAW). Then, they speak with Terri Gerstein, director of the Wagner Labor Initiative at New York University, to discuss the recent efforts in different states to weaken or strengthen child labor laws. First, Sam and Emma run through updates on Arizona’s major State Supreme Court decision, Biden’s rhetorical and policy developments on Israel, inflation, immigration policy, EPA, ESDA, and FAA operations, and the candidacies of RFK and Cornel West, before diving a little deeper into Arizona’s Supreme Court decision reverting the state’s reproductive policy to an 1864 law. Jeremy Kimbrell then joins, diving right into his history working at Mercedes’ Alabama plant of around 5,000, and the progressive attempts to organize one of two (the other being in South Carolina) Mercedes plans not represented by a collective bargaining agreement, with the major revelations at the UAW in the wake of COVID coming about at the perfect time, and allowing the plant to begin their unionization efforts with the backing of a major union. After tackling the major emphasis on a democratic organizing process, Kimbrell steps back to parse through the recent unfair labor practice filings the plant has filed against Mercedes both domestically, and in German courts, and how they could play into the ongoing unionization process. Terri Gerstein then walks Sam and Emma through the role of child labor law in the US, largely setting stronger safety and work regulations for child labor on both the federal and state levels, and what ongoing attacks from the right are doing to undermine these regulations, including gutting permit requirements and redefining work to allow kids to work in previously-considered-hazardous workplaces. After looking at the particular roles of “fissured workplaces,” and right-wing state legislatures in worsening this issue, wrapping up the interview by tackling the additional issue of the US’ incredibly weak mechanisms of labor enforcement and accountability, and how we can start to change that.

Sam and Emma speak with David Masciotra, author, lecturer and journalist based in Indiana, to discuss his recent book Exurbia Now: The Battleground of American Democracy. First, Sam and Emma run through updates on Israel’s continuing operations in the ethnic cleansing of Gaza, mounting pressure on Biden to halt weapons transfers to Israel, Sec. Mayorkas’ impeachment, student debt relief, unionization, and Mike Johnson’s Ukraine aid package, before diving into Donald Trump’s new middle-ground stance on abortion legislation, and the subtle backlash from his evangelical base. David Masciotra then joins, first outlining the definition of the “exurbs” – distinct from suburbia due to its lower density and greater distance from urban centers, yet much wealthier and with much more robust infrastructure than rural areas – and exploring the particular role they play in bolstering far-right politics electorally. After contextualizing the rise of exurbs as a late-stage development of white flight beginning in the mid-‘90s, with real estate firms building up isolated communities in previously rural towns and using exclusionary politics and property tax gimmicks to recruit those still escaping the growing diversity of urban centers and even some suburban areas, Masciotra walks Sam and Emma through the infrastructure of exurbia’s isolation, with residents largely working outside of their towns while all civic, media, and commercial roles are taken over by mega-churches, casinos, and massive corporations, resulting in little-to-no connection with their community, much less the outside world. Wrapping up, David explores the major issue that comes with addressing these severely isolated communities, particularly when their “problems” largely arise from reactionary cultural issues grounded in racial resentment and Christian nationalism, and why our hope in conquering this issue lies in on-the-ground and bottom-up organizing.

It’s a Casual Friday all calls and all clips edition! Next, Sam and Emma look at the recent evolutions in US policy toward Israel’s genocide in Gaza, with Blinken revealing that Biden HAS, in fact, had the leverage to force Netanyahu and Israel’s hand with aid, as well as using the phrase “immediate ceasefire” (whatever that means to them), before tackling the recent report on Israel’s AI-facilitated “Where’s Daddy?” program used to target the spouses and children of their military targets, and watching Senator Coons come forward on conditioning aid to Israel. It's an EmMajority Report Thursday! She speaks with Arvin Alaigh, writer & political activist from New Jersey, currently a Ph.D student at the University of Cambridge, to discuss his recent piece in The Nation entitled "Abolishing the “Ballot Line” Will Reshape Progressive Politics." Then, she speaks with Mya Frazier, journalist based in Columbus, Ohio, to discuss her recent piece in Harper’s entitled “The Eviction Experts.” First, Emma runs through updates on +972’s recent report on Israel’s use of AI technology to bomb the families of Palestinian targets, Biden’s supposed “anger” over Israel’s slaughter of World Central Kitchen workers, Israeli elections, Donald Trump’s legal woes, Ukraine’s war efforts, labor action in Alabama and Chicago, fascism in Texas and Alabama, and emissions reporting, before watching Richard Haass’ call for sanctions against Israel. Arvin Alaigh then joins, first walking through what New Jersey’s “ballot line” voting entailed, and how it drastically reduces the chances of outsider and non-county-endorsed candidates in state primaries. Stepping back, Alaigh walks Emma through the corrupt politics that the ballot line policy has enabled, with two major culprits, Governor Phil Murphy and Senator Bob Menendez, also inspiring the most recent scandal, with Gov. Murphy using his power to push his wife onto the preferred ballot spot to replace recently-indicted Sen. Menendez’s seat, seeing opposition Andy Kim file suit with no pushback from even Murphy’s allies. Wrapping up, Arvin tackles the current state of the suit, and the ongoing injunction against New Jersey’s ballot line policy. Mya Frazier then brings Emma through a brief history of her reporting on eviction and tenant-landlord power dynamics, and how reporting on the wave of evictions in the wake of the end of the COVID-19 eviction moratorium brought her to a corporate landlord conference of the Columbus Apartment Association. Expanding on this, Frazier walks through the major role that tech companies and startups played at the conference, advertising their ability to automate and streamline much of the landlord process, and how the automation trend plays with the increasing private consolidation of housing to severely undermines the power of tenants, bringing mass and constant eviction crisis to places like Columbus (Ohio). Next, Frazier parses through the severe necessity (and near impossibility) of federal housing regulation for tenants’ rights, before wrapping up with a who’s who of the consolidation of the housing market.

And in the Fun Half: Emma is joined by Brandon Sutton and Matt Binder as they discuss the heartwarming work of the World Central Kitchen and the White House’s heartless insistence that Israel has yet to break international law. Jack from Colorado calls in to discuss the ongoing shift of right-wing content creators to manosphere content, which transitions perfectly into a Charlie Kirk clip, and Kenny from Berkeley expands on the growing movement of student organizing. They also discuss Israel’s targeting of Iran amid US-Iranian negotiations, watch Chaya Raichik struggle to define wokeness in 2024, and talk with Ross from New York about depatriated and deported veterans, and the organizing efforts of Black Deported Veterans of America, plus, your calls and IMs!
