Then, she speaks with Hal Singer, economics professor at the University of Utah, to discuss some of Kamala Harris' recent economic policy proposals. First, Emma runs through updates on Israel’s expanding offensive in the West Bank, major polling bumps for Dems, the first Harris/Walz interview, Trump’s Q invocation, Trump’s would-be assassin, Biden’s major victory over drug prices, SCOTUS’ continuing attacks on student debt relief, Brazil vs. Elon Musk, Cornell’s labor action, and corruption in journalism, before parsing through the overwhelming threat of every type of violence that Palestinians face in the West Bank. Neil J. Young then joins, diving right into the roots of the gay Republican movement in the Cold War-era Lavender Scare, an overwhelming attempt by US federal, state, and local governments to criminalize, surveil, and punish queer Americans, be they politicians, military, police, or just every-day citizens, leading up to a 1978 ballot initiative from the religious right in California to ban queer people from teaching in public schools that saw an overwhelming organizing effort from gay Republicans to shoot down the initiative and prove that they belong in the GOP, a belief that took root among white gay men in San Francisco, before taking off nationally. Moving forward, Young then looks to the major role played by California Governor and US President Ronald Reagan over the outset and evolution of the HIV/AIDS epidemic in pushing rhetoric and policy that sought to otherize and demonize the homosexual “lifestyle” as the root of the crisis, and helping to launch a period of severe backlash to the social progress of the 1960s, particularly among the right. After expanding on the role of the public school system, and specifically the targeting of public school teachers, in right-wing attempts to marginalize and exclude queer folks, Neil and Emma walk through some of the major parallels we see with the challenges facing queer Americans today, wrapping up with the importance of understanding the immense stakes of this moment within its historical context. Professor Hal Singer then jumps right into the story of the US fight against inflation over the last few years, tackling the roles of price gouging and a corrupt rental market in exacerbating this economic crisis, including an expansive conversation on RealPage’s landlord price-fixing suit, and the absurd arguments that economists and elites used to obscure these root causes. Next, Professor Singer and Emma walk through the recent economic proposals from the Harris campaign that focus on these particular issues and what they mean within the context of the transition between Biden and her administrations, before briefly challenging the focus on anti-trust as a tool to prevent price gouging, and wrapping up the interview with an assessment of Biden major victory in drug price negotiations with the pharmaceutical industry, and how Harris can expand on and learn from that win.

From here, Stangler walks through Macron’s astonishing decision over the weeks since to take a hardline stance on refusing to name a left-wing prime minister or allowing the establishment of a left-wing government, taking advantage of a lack of constitutional clarity in the period he is allowed to take in naming a successor. After expanding on how this maneuver is ideologically consistent with Macron’s politics, Cole explores the overwhelmingly (and unsurprisingly) negative – but productive – response from the French left, unpacking their plan for pushing Macron to fulfill his constitutional duties, before wrapping up with an assessment of what Macron’s failure to name a new PM means for the immediate-future of French governance. Emma is then joined by Michael Brenes, who jumps right into the central parallels in his comparison between the infamous Henry Kissinger and Biden’s National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan, touching on their expansive roles in administrations pushing foreign policy projects to maintain and strengthen American primacy with little-to-no moral limit, and walking through the particular role Sullivan has played in advancing Joe Biden’s hyper-Zionist agenda despite overwhelming public disapproval. It's News Day Tuesday! Emma speaks with Alex Sammon, politics writer at Slate, to discuss his reporting from the Democratic National Convention. First, Emma runs through updates on continuing massacres in Gaza, Israel’s conflict with Hezbollah, Russia’s massive barrage on Ukraine, RFK’s candidacy, Jack Smith’s case against Trump, fascist disenfranchisement in Texas and Georgia, the UAW, Macron’s refusal to name a left-wing PM, Kroger’s anti-trust trial, gun violence, and labor action among Canada’s freight rails, also touching on the DNC’s superspreader status and Trump’s attempt to set the rules for the next debate. Alex Sammon then joins, diving right into his review of the four-day-long corporate-sponsored PR convention that was the DNC, and its rejection of the most pressing critiques of the party platform from pro-Palestinian delegates. Expanding on this, Sammon walks through his experience at a self-proclaimed “Zioness” party, a pro-gressive, pro-zionist, and pro-Kamala event, including the advertised speakers (including Senate and Congressional members), none of whom showed, and its incredibly brash yet seemingly ruminative discussion of Israel (no mention of Palestine, of course). After tackling some of the major attendees that did make the event – including Mondaire Jones and Van Jones – Sammon parses through the rhetoric that dominated the event, with little discussion of campaign spending or ongoing lobbying efforts, and a whole lot of talking about how good that Biden administration was for Israel and how great it would be if that continued, often with the implication that such a continuation should not be expected. Sammon wraps up the interview by running through his major conclusions from the event, before Emma covers some major (and majorly concerning) disenfranchisement efforts coming out of Nebraska and Georgia.

Professor Richard Slotkin then joins, diving right into the concept of the “national myth” as the use of history and narratives of the past to rationalize the present and its ongoing crises. Expanding on this, Professor Slotkin walks through the role of social and economic insecurity in spurring the need to make sense of a moment, before stepping back to touch on how malleable these mythologies can be, with the same stories often taking on multiple perspectives that can be used and presented differently to affirm various, frequently conflicting, contemporary ideologies, parsing through the various myths of the American Revolution, Civil War, and the “Good War: (WWII), and how they have been employed throughout history. After expanding on the utility of these mythologies, particularly within the context of the US economic and legal systems, Professor Slotkin brings Sam and Emma into the modern era, outlining the grounding mythologies of the MAGA movement in the Lost Cause and the Second Amendment, and how Democrats can (and might be) learning how to use these mythologies to their benefit as Conservatives do.

After an expansive conversation on the compatibility and value of this strain of liberalism with socialist systems and values, McManus wraps up the interview by walking Emma through how a “liberal socialism” would work in the context of the US Constitution, and how it compares to other brands of left politics. Rebecca Burns then looks to Austin as she explores the genesis of the ongoing right-wing war on the houseless as a Trump and Tech-backed legislative backlash to the liberal enclave’s attempt to decriminalize homelessness amid a major affordability crisis. Burns next tackles the role of the Cicero Institute, headed by Joe Lonsdale, and Greg Abbott’s administration in Texas in pushing a complete turnaround on the city (and state), resulting in the passage of myriad template bills that criminalized encampments, legalized violence against unhoused folks, and completely crippled the services and communities that keep the most marginalized in society afloat, templates that would go on to take root across the US, with major impact even in blue states like California. After expanding on the recent Supreme Court ruling that affirmed the constitutionality of criminalizing the homeless without first providing a remedy, Burns wraps up with an assessment of the futile cruelty of police crackdowns on the homeless.

Sam and Emma speak with David Austin Walsh, postdoctoral associate at the Yale Program for the Study of Antisemitism and college fellow at the University of Virginia, to discuss his recent book Taking America Back: The Conservative Movement and the Far Right. First, Sam and Emma run through updates on the Harris campaign’s momentum, Trump’s email problem, the DNC, Ilhan Omar’s race, Trump's tough few weeks, Biden’s medicare drug price negotiations, consumer protection policy, Israel’s continuing genocide in Gaza, Ukraine’s counter-invasion, and dropping violent crime rates in 2024, before basking in Trump and Vance’s beautifully poor handling of the “weird” allegations. David Austin Walsh then joins, diving right into the major role of one William F. Buckley in shaping American conservatism in the second half of the 20th Century, presenting himself (and all of his bigotry) as the “rational Republican.” Stepping back, Walsh explores how Buckley, the founder of the National Review, came to be the resectable staunch anti-communist and anti-labor aficionado that just happened to have close ties to full-on Neo Nazis, looking at the roles of folks like Merwin Hart, Charles Lindbergh, and Russell Maguire in shaping the more explicitly racist antisemitic strands of Buckley’s war on communism, before Barry Goldwater’s major loss in 1964 (and the rise of the Civil Rights Movement) saw him begin to push away the electoral risk of rhetorical extremism. Expanding on this, David explores how Buckley’s goal of obscuring the bigotry behind the policies of his party became a fundamental element of the conservative political apparatus in the decades that followed, with lines being drawn between the intellectual race science of the Bell Curve and the explicit eugenics of William Shockley, and other major talking heads like Rush Limbaugh and Tucker Carlson becoming media darlings while pushing the line of “respectability” further and further. After briefly touching on the important role of the “crackpot” extremist bigots in Buckley’s political charade, Walsh steps back to analyze the role catholicism and theocracy have played in the background of this evolution, and wraps up with a brief assessment of the Right’s willing embrace of reactionary populism over recent decades.

And in the Fun Half: Sam and Emma dive deep into reports of the major disarray within the Trump campaign in the wake of Harris replacing Biden on the Democratic ticket, before taking in Dr. Tanya Haj Hassan’s reflections on medical care in Gaza and the unmatched horrors facing Palestinians. It’s Hump Day! Sam speaks with David Dayen, executive editor at The American Prospect,, to discuss Kamala Harris selecting Tim Walz as her running mate, and the recent ruling by a federal judge against Google. First, Sam runs through updates on Walz’s thunderous debut as Harris jumps out to a polling lead, Cori Bush’s primary loss, Hamas leadership, Israel’s torture camps, Elon vs. Advertisers, Teachers’ Union action, and JD Vance’s link to Project 2025, also diving into Walz opening act as Vice Presidential candidate, and his ability to weave shots at the oddities of the GOP with clear progressive policy messages. David Dayen then joins, as he first dives into the DOJ’s recent massive victory over Google’s monopolistic violations of section two of the Sherman Act, becoming only the second major anti-monopoly victory of the digital age, walking through the case’s parallels with Microsoft’s monopoly case a quarter-century ago, and the central role Google’s dominance of the search engine market via buying default access across the industry. Expanding on this, Dayen explores the $25 billion budget in 2021 (as well as myriad internal documents) that undercut Google’s claim that this “default” status wasn’t actually important to their market share, before stepping back to walk through the upcoming “remedy” phase of the trial, why it’s so difficult to undo decades of monopoly power with punitive measures, and whether there is hope for greater structural change to come out of this case. This brings Dayen to the future of the administrative state, with this case’s appeal likely to go well into the next presidency, and the approach a Harris Administration might take to this issue, parsing through the early signs as major Dem donors implore her to ditch the major anti-trust leaders of Biden’s Administration, and whether Tim Walz and greater institutional defense of Biden’s administrative choices serves as a stronger signal. Sam concludes the free half by highlighting LinkedIn co-founder and major Dem Donor Reid Hoffman’s attempt to defend his call for Harris to drop FTC Chair Lina Khan.

It’s an EmMajority Report Thursday! She speaks with David Freedlander, writer at New York Magazine, to discuss his recent piece on Truth Social, Trump's media company. Then, she speaks with Diana Buttu, Palestinian analyst and former legal advisor to the Palestine Liberation Organization, to discuss the recent unrest in Israel after Israeli soldiers were detained for allegedly assaulting Palestinian prisoners. First, Emma runs through updates on Trump’s recent implosion in front of the National Association of Black Journalists Convention, the UAW’s endorsement of Harris, Arizona primary results, Russian relations, the aftermath of Israel’s recent escalations, dropping border arrests, Sudan, the Child Tax Credit, and federal protections for trans students, before watching the opening moments of Trump’s complete meltdown in the face of media pushback. David Freedlander then joins, diving right into an outline of the massive fraud machine that is Donald Trump’s Truth Social, a business considered generally worthless with massive losses alongside a market capitalization of $6 billion, functioning more as a financial proxy for Trump’s political power than an actual valuation. Stepping back, Freedlander walks through Trump’s background in wanting to push a social media company, and the role of his apprentice connections in making that a possibility after his first presidential term, before wrapping up with the danger this massive market capitalization can pose when it comes to Trump’s political power, and why it continues to work. Diana Buttu and Emma then step right into the continuing horrors unfolding in Israel’s ethnic cleansing of Palestine, parsing through the evolving story on the public and political backlash to Israel’s attempt to detain and question 9 soldiers alleged of gang-raping captives, and looking at the massive scale of Israel’s torture camp where this took place. Next, Buttu walks through the expansive reports on Israel’s torture regime against Palestinians, with a particular focus on its motive of pure revenge and dehumanization, before briefly touching on the Israeli government/military’s tacit acceptance of the fascist violence erupting against them. Wrapping up, Diana and Emma tackle Israel’s recent attempts to escalate broader regional conflicts, and Bibi’s lifeline of war and destruction.

And in the Fun Half: Emma is joined by Brandon Sutton and Matt Binder as they watch Trump dance around his regret over the JD Vance pick, talk with Maje from Washington about the GOP’s major fumbling of the Kamala Harris discourse, and Karie from NY explores the ahistorical approach of the right.
