The Majority Report with Sam Seder

Sam and Emma host Heather McGhee, a senior fellow at Demos, to discuss her new book The Sum of Us: What Racism Costs Everyone and How We Can Prosper Together on how the legacies of slavery and systemic racism hurt all Americans in material ways. They explore her concept of “drain pool politics,” in which white Americans started to vote away their own public benefits in response to desegregation, and its historical grounding in the white elite breaking up working-class solidarity by targeting Black and Brown folks at the expense of poor whites. They delve deeper into the effect of this “zero-sum” view of race in America that is used to distract and divide with manufactured cultural grievances, and what kind of work needs to be done, like building solidarity through organizing and confronting race, to begin to change the American consciousness. Then, Sam and Emma unpack Liz Cheney doing her best to dance around the connection between Trump’s election fraud claims and the current wave of voting bills, all while accidentally tying everything back to the 2000 election.

And in the Fun Half: Michael from Miami calls in to give out much deserved congratulations to Sam and Emma before exploring potential Democratic challengers in the Florida Senatorial race, the crew explores the coverage of the Wuhan origins of Covid-19 and the undertones of anti-science and anti-China rhetoric, and John from California provides much-needed information and resources around the current political devastation in Burma. Next, Ruben from El Paso discusses the potential universal college option, and Marjorie Taylor Green finds solidarity with the “second class” citizens of the Holocaust – or at least the "rational" sect of the Jews. Finally, Robert Gates does some wonderfully dishonest blame-shifting onto the Palestinians and the “Arab States” for the sustained violence in the region, plus, your calls and IMs!
