The Majority Report with Sam Seder

Sam hosts historian Gerald Horne to discuss his new book The Dawning of the Apocalypse: The Roots of Slavery, White Supremacy, Settler Colonialism, and Capitalism in the Long Sixteenth Century.

Sam and Professor Horne begin their conversation exploring Horne's historiographic path, specifically how he has worked his way backward through American history to understand its racism and quest for power. Horne explains the relation between religious authority and how struggles between sects of Christianity forged a shared pan-European identity in hopes of dominating the New World and defeating Spanish catholic rule. Professor Horne examines the roots of the capitalist system in the New World, including the slave labor used to produce commodities like sugar plantations in the Caribbean. Sam and Professor Horne conclude their conversation examining how European leaders improvised a vision of pan-Europeanism and racial superiority and how it relates to today's white supremacist groups and antiracist efforts from the grassroots.

And in the Fun Half: Cole James Cash remembers Michael Brooks and describes what it's like to work in a Covid isolation hotel, Donald Trump wants a taste of the TikTok sale, Trump says mail in voting is ok now, the right fails to malign John Lewis, Ben Shapiro sings Les Mis, plus your calls and IMs!
